elkridge, evacuated after an unexpected wake-up call. >> firefighters came down the hallway. and they were pounding on the doors. >> reporter: stan bay, from california, soon found out police were busting a meth lab. the drug is usually made by mixing an over-the-counter cold medicine with chemicals. in some cases, the combination can be explosive. >> you know, the room that this is all happening is just down the hall from me. so they had arrested these three guys. and they had him cuffed, they had him on the floor. >> reporter: police arrested two more outside the hotel. >> well, we've arrested five in total. and they're all facing charges of manufacturing, possession, and possession with intent to distribute. >> last near -- last year, more than 10,000 meth labs were busted in the u.s., according to the maryland enforcement agency. most cases are in the lower midwest. and that's where police say these suspects are originally from. >> they were manufacturing the meth because they were unable to find it in howard county.

>> so it was for their own use? >> it's our understanding and belief that they intended to use the drugs among the five of them. >> reporter: guest the at the hotel were allowed back in their rooms around four hours later. >> it was quite the experience. it was sort of a combination of poseidon adventure and a ride at disney world. >> reporter: a business trip he'll never forget. >> reporter: those suspects are between 20 and 34 years old, and all of them are in police custody. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: only 10 meth labs have been busted up in maryland since 2004. wjz is learning more tonight about the man suspected of dismembering a family friend and then eating his body parts. mary is in the newsroom with details. >> another victim believes that suspect had planned to eat his organs, too, when he attacked him with a baseball bat. police say this man, 21-year- old alexander kinniao confessed to eating the heart and parts of the brain of his roommate in harford county. but attorneys for another man,

joshua caesar, say kinniao attacked him inside his dorm. and when squeezear came -- caesar came through, he was standing over him with a knife. he attacked a family friend days after attacking caesar. >> kinyua is charged in the killing of cujo j. cody. he is also charged in the bat attack of caesar. big money, big problems. that's the reality for some pro athletes, including former ravens star jamal lewis. wjz, mike mike helhas more on the -- mike hellgren has more on the bankruptcy. >> vic, it could be a very bumpy road ahead for lewis. if his assets are sold to pay creditors. many times, combined with huge salaries can spell troubles for athletes. >> reporter: former raven jamal lewis was living the high life,

making millions, buying property across the country. now, he's in financial trouble. filing for bankruptcy with assets, according to published reports, that include a fur coat, a trucking business, an amusement park and that championship ring he won here in baltimore. he's reportedly $10.6 million in debt, even owing money to m&t bank, the name on the stadium, where he made his name in the nfl, and where he once said football wasn't the only thing happening on the field. >> come to find out, i'm not a youngster anymore. that this is really a business. >> reporter: lewis is not alone. antoine walker had several bentleys but ended up broke, having to sell his championship ring. >> reporter: sports illustrated estimated that about eight in every 10 nfl players had financial difficulties two years after they retired. >> athletes feel immortal. >> reporter: steve silverman represents many and he has seen

it all. >> we had one client of the firm who retired with $50 million in the bank. and within 10 years had declared bankruptcy. there are a lot of shady people that feed on them hike piranas. and before you know it, the money is out the door. it's like a lottery winner. some people are so hard-headed, they don't get it. >> reporter: as for lewis, he'll be in court again for his bankruptcy next month. >> that's because his hearing for today was rescheduled. he retired in 2009 after 10 years in the nfl. he's just 32 years old. vic? >> all right. thank you. silverman says that divorce can also take its toll on the finances of many athletes. new revelations in the scandal surrounding anne arundel county executive, john leopold. the alcu says it has proof that john leopold illegally gathered information on has political enemies. the group said it obtained state records.

in each case, the aclu says an active or retired anne arundel county police officer, conducted unjustified background searches on leopold's behalf. one of the men targeted is civil rights leader carl snowden. leopold had denied the existence of an enemy's list. a northeast baltimore restaurant owner is found dead, inside his place of business. police say michael sullivan owned sully's seafood and subs. the 55-year-old was found murdered inside the restaurant yesterday. so far, no arrests have been made. anyone with information can call metro crimestoppers at 1- 866-7-lockup. difficult and expensive cleanup continues around maryland tonight. days after a tornado outbreak leaves a path of destruction. wjz is live at harford county. derek valcourt shows us there is still a long way to go in fallston. >> reporter: there's a long way to go. because there was so much damage done here.

this is one example. the storm literally ripped this wall right off of the building. they had to board it up, add support beams as braces to keep the plywood up here while they make repairs. and there are buildings like this all over fallston. along bel air road in fallston, businesses took a beating. company signs missing, bent or broken. shattered glass, needing repairs. and too many damaged roofs to count. >> all of a sudden, you could hear like debris hitting the building. >> reporter: fallston pharmacy, one of many businesses here with tarps temporarily covering the damage. >> water was starting to leak inside. so that's what they're working on picking now. >> reporter: the f-1 tornado captured in this new photograph, lifted and demolished this trailer, snapped hundreds of trees, ruined cars, knocked out power, and sent auto shop owner, keith matthews to the hospital with broken bones, after the tornado destroyed his small building, crushing him under a fallen

concrete wall. >> the royal farms stores, way back there. we found its sign in the woods, hundreds of yards away. >> reporter: roofing company, now swamped with repairs, and cleanup rue -- crews, busy, trying to help businesses get their doors back open. nearby homes also took a beating. >> we lost a lot of the siding on our house here. >> reporter: jill shore had damage to her deck, walls ask roof. similar stories for other neighbors. many surprised that the damage wasn't worse. >> i did not think my house was going to be here or my garage. >> i think we definitely got the brunt of the storm. >> that's amazing that something like that can happen here. >> take a look at this truck. after the storm, folks came out of their buildings and found this truck on its roof. a little bit of damage here. they had to flip the truck back over. but it's just a testament to the power of that f1 tornado that swept through the fallston area. keep in mind, there were a number of other tornadoes, 10

in all, counted so far, in maryland. we're live in fallston, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> going to be a long recovery. derek. thank you very much. the weather channel ranks maryland third on the list of states for its tornadoes per square mile. much calmer weather today. it's still a little cooler than normal out there. let's take a live look outside from sky eye chopper 13. still, will we see more of the same this week? first warning weather has more. let's go to bob in the weather center. >> a little sun out there. that's good news. may even see the transit of venus we just talked about. skies cleared just a tad. you know there are showers upstream. most of those will pass way to our west. not even impacting our region at all. except maybe in far western maryland. slight chance of a shower. maybe coming in from new jersey. as far as temperatures go, boy, it has been a little chilly the last couple of days. bernadette woods in the outback with a look at those current

temperatures. bernadette? >> well, it's been cool. our average is now up to 80 degrees. not close to that today. we have been in the upper 60s here in baltimore. and take a look at our current 67 degrees. now dropping back down into the 60s. look out west, though. still in the 50s this afternoon. okay. this is the pattern we have been in for a couple of days. and we're still going to be in through at least thursday. it's this cool pocket of air, over the entire northeast. it not only keeps our temperatures down. but it will promote the chance, each and every day, of a shower or thunderstorm as bob was talking about. so that chance exists tomorrow. even again so on thursday, before a big-time warmup moves our way thursday. we'll have more. back inside. maryland governor martin o'malley may have a stake in today's vote, on whether to recall wisconsin's republican governor. political reporter pat warren explains, the governor campaigned for the democratic challenger. and the republicans fight back. >> as wisconsin voter goes to

the polls to discuss whether to do this. the governor of virginia is playing this tune about maryland's martin o'malley. ♪ [ music ] >> how does a voter recall in wisconsin become a grudge match between maryland and virginia. governor o'malley and virginia governor bob mcdonald, share their respective parties governors association. they campaigned to help the democratic challenger defeat the incumbent. >> the state, where the governor has tried to become the poster boy for rolling back women's rights, rolling back workers rights. >> reporter: mcdonald and the republican workers association responded with this ad, slamming o'malley as a poster boy for tax increases. but o'malley defends his approach as balanced. >> it's nothing that any of us particularly want to do. >> reporter: and as parting

sale-a-bration. it's part of the war of 1812. monique griego has more on the festivities. >> reporter: well, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to come here to the harbor for this year's event. and many people are hoping it means more tourism for years to come. >> reporter: excitement ignited with a bang, as a celebration of the bicentennial of the war of 1812, kicked off at the inner harbor. >> this is going to be the biggest thing we've seen here in the last 30 years. >> the mayor and governor were on hand to anticipate one of the most anticipated events. next week's star-spangled sale- a-bration. >> we commemorate this history with a great celebration. >> reporter: it will bring an international parade with more than 40 tall ships and naval warships to several spots along the harbor. this similar event in 2004 brought in hundreds of thousands of people. but the bicentennial means everything is bigger and better. >> i'm more than excited to have all of this activity come

i copy loud and clear, governor. >> reporter: with that dramatic cause, maryland connected all maryland police, firefighters, ems and emergency management personnel on the same radio system for the first time ever. >> public safety needs to have their own system that allows them to get through. >> reporter: ray lara, former baltimore city fire chief, helped design the new system. he told me, the 9/11 attack is the ultimate example of a communication breakdown for first responders. and why they called for evacuations, but firefighters never heard. maryland first not only links communication agencies but operates on its own powerful communication frequency. first responders will have clear communication to respond. >> it's built to a higher standard than cellular is. there is backup generators. the towers are much stronger. and it's only fiber optic cable. so it's underground. >> that's welcome news to ross

of pool balls in ocean, the transit of venus is the ultimate trick shot. the size of earth, it passes between us and the sun twice every 100 years or so. >> it's fairly rare because the orbit of venus is tilted relatively close to earth's orbit. this will be in perfect alignment. >> reporter: it is so rare, it hasn't been seen since 1639. and that put into motion looking for it a century later but also to use the measurements. >> it was like the holy grail back in the 1700s. >> reporter: among others, english surveyors, mason and dixon went to south africa. and sea captain cook went to hawaii. they will use telescopes to decipher venus's atmosphere. the sun backlighting it like night through -- light through a nightgown. >> that sort of gives us the chemistry. >> the transit of deveinous has

it's 6:30. 67 degrees and cloudy in central maryland. hello. thanks for staying with wjz. here are shift stories people are talking about tonight. jury selection is under way in the trial of former penn state coach jerry sandusky. nine jurors have been chosen now, but it may be tough to find an impartial jury in the tight knit community. >> reporter: jerry sandusky and his lawyer came to court, hoping to find jurors who do not already assume the worst about the former penn state

assistant coach. many in this community feel the way local nancy fulton does. >> i think he's guilty. and that silly grin he has had his face, doesn't do him good either. >> reporter: judge john cleland toaltdz the potential jurors they hold justice in their hands. >> he knows they have seen news reports on this case. he said he is trusting them from this point forward to act as jurors. andand not to read newspapers. >> reporter: many had worked at penn state or even volunteered at second mile, the charity for boys sandusky founded and where prosecutors say he met some of his victims. >> reporter: some on1 -- 150 witnesses may be called to testify. the prosecution may call the wife and son of coach paterno to take the stand. >> it was mcqueary who claims he saw sandusky naked in the

shower with a boy more than a decade ago. despite all of the sensational headlines, the judge urged potential jurors to have an open mind. >> not to render an machine until the case-- an opinion until the case is heard and the state proves beyond a reasonable doubt. >> but the 58-year-old insists he is innocent. >> the judge is hoping to begin opening statements on monday. a major victory in the war on terror. as al qaeda's number 2 is killed. the white house confirms, abu ya ya al-libbi of -- was killed in a drone strike. he is described as the operational leader of al qaeda. more than a dozen of the group's senior commanders have been removed in the past year. the death toll continues to rise after a plane crashes in a neighborhood in nigeria. mary is in the newsroom with more on what may have caused it to crash. >> reporter: officials say everyone on board that plane was killed. but they still don't know how

many victims were on the ground. 153 people on the dana air flight died when it crashed in the heavily-populated area. a spokesperson for nigeria's aviation ministry says the company has indefinitely suspended the license of aier. the flight crew radioed the tower that they had engine trouble shortly before the crash. but the exact cause of the crash, still under investigation tonight. denise? >> thank you, mary. some u.s. citizens were on board the flight. but the state department has not confirmed how many. homes are evacuated in colorado, as massive wildfire burns hundreds of acres. this fire is being called the stewart hold fire. it's in larimer county, where it's destroyed one structure that forced the evacuation of more than a dozen homes. several more families are on their way home. an orioles radio announcer takes the stand in roger clemens' trial today. joe angel testified he saw

clemmens on a golf course. prosecutor says he attended a pool party at canseco's home. in 2008, clemens said he didn't attend the party. clemens is charged with lying to congress when he denied taking steroids or human growth hormone. trouble at the tsa. the agency hands down one of its largest disciplinary actions in years. 43 employees, including a top supervisor, have been fired or suspended in fort myers. an internal investigation reveals they failed to perform random screening last year. wisconsin is holding a recall election. targeting republican scott walker. danielle nottingham explains how today's results could have implications for the presidential race. >> reporter: wisconsin voters lined up early to decide whether the republican governor will keep his job. at a cost of $9 million to

taxpayers, the recall election puts milwaukee mayor tom barrett, against sitting governor, scott walker. >> i voted for scott walker once. and i want to make sure he gets in again. >> reporter: polls have shown republican scott walker with a lead as high as 7 points. but it's been shrinking. >> around the state the energy has been building and building and building, which we think is a very good sign. >> reporter: keymach lawmakers pushed through a balls, pushing through and stripping government employees of their collective bargaining rights. >> ultimately, i care more about the next generation. >> reporter: if walker keeps his job, some political watchers say it could make wisconsin a difficult state for president obama to hang onto this fall. >> the president has not gone to wisconsin to campaign for barrett. but he tweeted his support monday. saying, i'm standing by tom barrett.
