maryland cashes in. the states biggest casino is open to the public tonight. >> the crowds, the entertainment and how maryland hopes to benefit. hello, everybody. >> i'm vick carter. here is what people are talking about tonight. >> the maryland live casino goes live more than 3000 slot machines, live entertainment and upscale restaurants and it's expected to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars. wjz is live on the casino floor, megan mccorkle has tonights big opening and what it means. >> reporter: denise i've got to tell you it was quite the crowd as thousands of people went through the door when the

casino opened about an hour ago. they all waited in line for their chance at the jackpot. >> [applause]. >> the maryland live casino officially opened its doors to the public. the crowds lined up for hours to get inside with one thing on their mind. >> money. >> win win win. >> lots of money. >> winning. >> we're here to win. this is going to do it. >> once they hit the floor some had a strategy. >> you have to play the maximum. >> others not so much. >> push the button, [laughter]. >> but by the end of the year, maryland will have more than 4700 gaping machines. in fact that's more than the mgm grand. >> we've built what we think is one of the great casino entertainment projects anywhere in the country. >> the county also a winner with the casino bringing in 1500 new jobs. >> 1500 permanent jobs.

what that means in this economy is so important. >> maryland vibe estimates paying $400 million in taxes, nearly half of the money going to education. >> every dollar helps and keeping these dollars in maryland and having these dollars turn around in the maryland economy will only benefit. >> both the state and casino hoping to hit the jackpot. >> we want to give you a live look outside of the parking garage. right now you can see traffic just backed up all over this area, kind of gives you an idea of just how many people showed up here tonight. in fact casino officials tell me they expect about 20,000 visitors a day here, even megan mccorkle, wjz eye witness news. >> that's a lot of visitors. the casino will be open sunday through thursday, 8:00 a.m.- 2:00 a.m. and friday and saturday it stays open until 4:00 a.m. an out of control driver causes a terrifying crash in west baltimore. the sky team flying over the

scene this afternoon near swan avenue. we're told the driver swerving in and out of traffic hit two cars and jumped the median. the driver ran away. one person suffered minor injuries. several starbucks workers are locked up during a robbery. two robbers burst into the starbucks at mount washington mill last week as the store closed. police say that thieves stole money and locked the workers in a booth room so they could escape. a shocking development in the case of the hartford county man who confessed to killing and eating his roommate. he may have tried to do it before. another potential victim talks exclusively to wjzs mike helgren about his encounter with the confessed can it ball. >> reporter: just days before police say alexander kanua carved his roommate with a knife and ate his heart and brain inside his families home in hartford county, he was arrested for attacking gash was caesar on the morgan state university campus in baltimore,

beating him with a bat and then according to reports, standing over his body with a knife. it fractured caesar's skull. he spoke to wjz about the attack in his first television interview. >> i was able to turn because i felt him. >> what happens next? >> he had a black shield over his head. that's the only thing i remember. he had a black shield off his head. >> what's going flew your mind. >> i was in utter shock. >> caesar now believes he would have been the first victim of the cannibalism. >> regardless of whether i heal up, if my eye sight comes back or not, it's still something in the mind the rest of my life. >> this bizarre video shows him speaking in january at a student for um at morgan state, talking about the virginia tech massacre but also human sacrifice. >> it's something that goes on outside the university, it's international. >> according to published reports he had trouble on

campus, expelled from the rotc after punching a wall in january. one report called him a virginia tech waiting to happen, leading to questions over whether the school missed warning signs. >> the university spokesman would not go on camera but pointed out he was not a student at the time of the attack in hartford county. >> he did say the school is now reviewing policies. >> i wouldn't even been put in that situation if morgan did a better job of telling the general population of what type of person they were around. >> the university says the safety of its students is always a priority. mike helgren, wjz eye witness news. >> now, his family has declined comment. he is being held without bail. annapolis police hope a new surveillance video will help them find a suspected rapist. police just released this video of a man running through downtown annapolis. they think he raped a woman last month. if you recognize that man give

police a call. the jury is ready to hear the stand all accusations in jerry sandusky's sex abuse trial. lawyers finished selecting 12 jurors and four alternates today. 10 of the jurors have ties to the state. he is acused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15 year period. sandusky admits he showered with some boys but says he never molested them and now the jury is selected the trial begins on monday. a baltimore catholic school teacher serving four life sentences for raping young students could be freed from prison. tonight abuse victims gathered to fight back against his possible release. wjz is live explaining how a mistake by the mans lawyer could give him a plea deal. >> reporter: it's unclear if he will be released from prison, however the possibility of many of his former students now adults rallying to keep him in jail. more than two dozen former students with their families rallied in south baltimore. they are in pain and angry the

former baltimore catholic school teacher could possibly be released from prison. >> why are you all out here today? >> to keep him in jail for life. >> he was indicted for raping more than a dozen students and convicted in one case in 1995. >> i didn't do any of these things and all i wanted was a fair trial. >> students say it happened at the former catholic community middle school when 1972 and 1979 in the 1500 block of east fourth avenue. >> if they were to give him the electric chair i'd volunteer to throw the switch. >> a federal judge in 2010 said he must be given an opportunity to accept a plea deal that his lawyers didn't tell him about. >> one, whether he was offered a plea of 10 years, two whether his employer failed to communicate that plea to him and three, would he have accepted the plea if offered. if you get a yes on all three he's going to be released. now if john mrersbacker, if

mystery surrounding what's causing it widened after the smell got worse. >> we know what algae smells like. it smells horrible but this smells different. it smells like sewage. >> tina waters says all signs point to a sewage leak, or an overflow of the system possibly caused by last weeks storm. boat crews noticed the problem saturday. >> basically it was just a field of gray water sitting on top of the harbor. >> one of the first things that tipped meyers off that sewage may be in the water was the appearance of these. they may look like rocks but they are actually balls of greece and meyers says they can only originate in sewer pipes but when you crack them open, trust me, they stink. >> and there are other signs. >> it's disgusting, like condoms, tax upon applicators. >> they are now collecting samples to test for bacteria found in sewage. the state and city are also doing their own testing but have yet to confirm or deny if it's sewage.

partly cloudy, 63 degrees, the complete first weather forecast is coming up. a major clean up in one florida neighborhood. it 60-foot tree comes crashing down on the roof of the house. it is believed the tree was damaged after a series of storms moved across the orlando area. no one was in the house at the time and no injuries are reported. a large floating dock thatwashed ashore in ore ore turns out to be debris to the sue jam it in japan. there was a metal sign showing the name of a japanese port. the concrete and metal structure was tested for radiation but the results came back negative. a landmark verdict in massachusetts when texting is linked to a vehicular homicide conviction. this is the first time in that states history that someone has been found guilty of causing a fatal accident while texting. 18-year-old aaron devoe was sentenced to a total of four and a half years in prison. two years were the result of the texting charge.

16 months ago, he crashed head on into another vehicle killing the driver. he claimed it was because he was tired but prosecutors produced phone records to prove their case. the fda is investigating whether spray on sun screen caused a man in boston to catch fire. he walked in front of a barbecue grill shortly after applying the sun screen. he suffered second degree burns to his chest and back and the fda says it is possible for sun screen to become flammable because some of the products are alcohol-based. a dramatic diagnosis for singer/songwriter sheryl crow. crow reveals she has a benign brain tumor but she's telling her fans not to worry. >> sheryl crow isn't letting a brain tumor interrupt her nationwide tour. the 50 year old revealed she has a fairly common type of non- cancerous tumor. >> these are almost always benign tumors and they rarely ever progress to anything beyond that. >> they grow from the tissue

covering the brain. they are not in the brain itself. crow says she discovered the tumor last fall when memory problems prompted her to get a brain scan but that may just be a coincidence. >> i personally think it's unlikely that it caused the memory loss, especially if they are just observing it at this point because usually that's associated with a larger tumor. >> in the rare cases they do get big, they can cause symptoms like headaches and seizures. that's when doctors consider removing them. crow who is a breast cancer survivor is expected to undergo periodic brain scans to monitor her tumor. >> whenever anybody hears the word brain tumor obviously they are going to be concerned but if you have to have a brain tumor this is clearly one of the one to have. >> the grammy winning singer says she's happy and healthy and working on her new record. >> crow greeted her fans saying she appreciated their support and told them to watch her on the tony awards this sunday

night. wjz eye witness news. >> you can see the tony awards sunday at 8:00 on wjz 13. inspire the imagination of millions of readers tonight. the world of literature is mourning the loss of ray bradbury. he is best known for his classic fahrenheit 451. his career spans seven decades and he also wrote movie and television scripts including episodes of the twilight zone. he was 91 years old. last fridays tornado outbreak is in the record books after two more are confirmed. the tornadoes confirmed today were in howard and allegheny counties bringing the total for the day up to 12. that's not only an all-time daily record for maryland. it's also a record for the most tornadoes in the month of june and we still have 24 days to go. let's hope we've had our share. >> i should say. everyone has said they like that, in my entire career i've never seen a day like that. nobody has.

it's just unprecedented. we had a quiet night, a couple sprinkles down across southern maryland. tomorrow afternoon we may see another shower, maybe a hundred r shower. take a look at temperatures now, pretty comfortable but it's about five degrees warmer than it was last night at this hour. southwest winds at three, the barometer is rising 30.01 inches, a very cool 51 in oakland, 57 cumberland, 63 ocean city only at 58 and 60 in packs river. local temperatures around the mid 60s so it will get cooler tonight, probably down around low to mid 50s so a pleasant night for sleeping but it looks like things beginning to warm up starting to see a bit of a wind shift to the south southwest, tomorrow more of a west wind and that will allow somewhat warmer temperatures to move into the region, some showers in the afternoon mainly across virginia or to our north. we kind of missed most of them today but there's another little spoke of energy coming down from eastern canada and new england that could bring us scattered shower or thunder

shower again tomorrow, probably even each day this week somebody has gotten rain but not everybody. to our north a few showers left over in pennsylvania and the closest you see not too far away and d.c. did see a coupleshowers, southern maryland saw pretty good thunder shower with pretty decent rain for a few minutes late this afternoon but tomorrow, it looks like the chance of rain probably in the afternoon maybe 30% and then after that warmer air begins to move in and shower possibility to our north on saturday but looks like we'll be just partly to mostly sunny and very much warmer this weekend as the winds go back to the southwest, saturday we are talking mid to upper 80s, maybe getting close to 90 on sunday. yeah, west winds around five knots and the bay temp around 72. tonight a few cloud the, please and and 54 overnight so very nice and tomorrow back up close to 80. maybe a shower or thunder shower probably after 3:00 or 4:00 and then it dies out tomorrow night.

orioles pick cal ripkin's son ryan. graduating as a senior, he accepted a scholarship to play at south carolina university. it's unclear if he will sign with his dads former team. he is a stand out first baseman and a pitcher. ryan's uncle to honor the best maryland high schoolers picked the play in the brooks robinson all-star baseball game, north versus south stars after the o's game at oreo park on sunday, billy was a maryland high school all-star 30 years ago. >> football another off season practice session for the ravens, voluntary work outs important for the young players like linebacker courtney upshaw. the second round pick from alabama is getting an education on the pro game. >> i feel i've learned a lot. these past few weeks they've been coming in and the preparation has been a lot so we are trying to get better each day and i feel i'm improving every aspect of what they want me to do. >> next week the work out for the mens tour, the veterans expected to attend and join

a rather large and unique looking resident at the denver zoo this morning, zookeepers notice an 800-pound named reny was outside her exhibit. fortunately she wasn't heading back home. zookeepers left the gate open to the exhibit and hereny returned to be with her mate benny. well a likely senior prank
