no triple crown. >> i'll have another has won the kentucky derby. >> i'll another is out of the belmont and may never race again. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. kai is off today. here's what people are talking about. the news is a big blow to horse racing. the shot at the triple crown is over for "i'll have another." randall pinkston reports for wjz from belmont park. the thoroughbred may already have run his last race. >> i'll have another, on the left, shows no signs of injuries at his early morning workout. but hours later, he was suddenly scratched from the belmont stakes with a swollen tendon. >> it's extremely disappointing. and i feel so sorry for the whole team. >> what would be the danger if he had run? >> it gets worse. >> possible life-threatening injury? >> no, none. absolutely none. >> i'll have another's trainers

walked him in front of the cameras to she his injury is still in the early stages. >> it was confirmed between all of us to retire him. >> reporter: the 3-year-old colt was trying to become horse racing's triple crown winner. it hasn't been done since 1978. >> reporter: more than 100,000 people had been expected here for the race. it's a wide open field now. but horse racing fans say without "i'll have another," it just won't be the same. >> well, makes for a new horse race. but it's too bad. i was looking forward to seeing if there would be a triple crown that we could brag about. >> reporter: i'll have another was purchased for $35,000 and won almost $2.7 million. he still has earning potential through greeting fees, even if he couldn't accomplish horse racing's greatest feat.

>> and the scratch marks the first time since bold venture in 1936, that the derby and preakness winner did not run in the belmont. well, a severe blow today to jerry sandusky's defense. denise is in the newsroom with more on the judge's ruling. denise? >> the judge overseeing the child sex abuse case, denied the defense's request to have the charges dismissed. that leaves all 52 counts intact. opening statements are expected to begin monday. the decision is not good for the defense. they argue some charges rely on hearsay. and others are too vague a defense. a jury is ready to hear testimony. the trial in state college, pennsylvania, is expected to last several weeks. mary? >> sandusky acknowledges showering with young boys, and embracing them. but he denies sexually abusing them. accused fort hood gunman, major nidal hassan gets a surprising warning today from a military judge. in a pretrial hearing in texas,

the military colonel told hassan if he refuses to shave and groom, he'll be sent out. at a hearing today, hassan's attorneys ask today for another delay in the court-martial. the judge did not rule on that motion. at a military hearing in fort meade, anne arundel county. a judge failed to rule against this. the judge also rejected an argument from private bradley manning's attorneys that the government used vague language. manning's trial is set for september. the president says the economy is still at risk. and he's accusing republicans of pushing policies that could weaken recovery. tara mergener has more, as president obama addresses jobs and the debt crisis. >> reporter: the economy brought president obama to the white house briefing room

friday. >> good morning. >> reporter: he urged european leaders to take action on their debt crisis and called on congress to take action on the jobs plan last year. >> they left most of the jobs plan just sitting there. and in light of the head winds we're facing right now, i urge them to consider. >> reporter: the president says there is already money set aside for those who will get firefighters, teachers back on the job. >> private sector is doing just fine. where we're seeing weakness in our economy, had to do with state and local government. >> reporter: republican white house hopeful mitt romney wasted no time, answering the president's assessment of the economy. >> he said the private sector is doing fine. is he really that out of touch? >> reporter: president obama later clarified his remarks. >> it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine. that's the reason i had the press conference. >> reporter: republicans on capitol hill are also feeling

election year pressure, but say it is the president who is refusing to work with them. >> it is not because of house republicans. it's because of the failed stimulus policies and other items in his agenda. >> reporter: republican leaders say the house will vote next month to extend bush-era tax cuts. president obama wants to see the cuts expire for people making more than $250,000. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> well, today, stocks continued their recent winning trend. the dow is up 93 and had its biggest weekly gain of the year. the s&p nasdaq also posted gains. maryland voters will decide on same-sex marriage in november. the state board of elections today certified more than 75,000 signatureoss petitions. that's more than enough to put the petition on the ballot. the maryland marriage alliance will continue to gather signatures through the end of the month. well, there is a missing bag of cash tonight.

if you found it on i-97, state police want you to come forward. a 7-eleven employee said he put the night's receipt and bag on his car and drove off. and the money fell off. the bag is light red, with 7- eleven printed on it. anybody with information on the bag of cash is asked to contact the glen burnie barracks of the maryland state police. closely monitoring a black bear, spotted wandering near homes and a school in the northern section of the county. mike helfren has the latest on this potentially dangerous situation. >> jacksonville elementary school was put on lockdown yesterday. a teacher and several students saw the bear, went inside the classroom and the bear went on his way. >> reporter: this black bear was probably looking for food and traveled a long way for it, to jacksonville elementary school in baltimore county, just as 300 students students and parents had gathered for the fifth grade gladduation.

>> three of them screamed. then they just stared. because this is not something you see in baltimore county. she was like, get in the classroom now. at that time, we did a complete, what we call lockdown. in other words, no one went out from there. but never saw the bear again. >> the bear likely came from western maryland or maybe even southern pennsylvania. it's a rare sight. >> many, many years i have been in the system. and i have never encountered a black bear before. this is one in a million for me. >> reporter: last week, a couple saw a bear near manchester, carroll county, a -- 2-year-old male. >> i said, my god, there's a bear. and told my wife, there's a bear. >> we couldn't believe it. we just couldn't believe it. >> reporter: at jacksonville elementary, the worries are over, once school lets out for the summer today. >> it can go anywhere for summer vacation. but please go back north or

you want to do outside. and temperatures are reflecting a very nice, summer-like pattern. right now, we're at 84 degrees. 73 is the cool spot. 83, over toward elkton. now, you might wonder how this is 14 degrees warmer today than yesterday. keep in mind that yesterday, right around now, there was a shower moving past bwi marshall, that knocked the temperatures back into the 60s. but overall, we ended up with a daytime high around 80 degrees. so we're at 84 now. the normal high is 81. and that's where we're going to be pretty much in those ranges and up for the next few days. we'll continue to keep you posted. we'll have your complete updated first warning forecast coming up in a few moments. now, to kristy breslin for the first look at our roads. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. the good news is, it's friday. the bad news is, of course, delays on the beltway. slow to rock -- loch raven boulevard. stop and go, from baltimore national pike to security

it is 83 degrees and mostly sunny in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a florida teen is rushed to the hospital after a spear becomes stuck in his head. take a look. you can see the victim on a stretcher near miami. police believe the boy and a friend tried to reload a spear gun when it accidentally fired, striking the 16-year-old in the head. he was conscience on the way to -- conscious to the way to the hospital. but no word yet on his current condition. some incredible video of a school bus crash in louisiana. watch as the children are

suddenly knocked out of the seats near shreveport. police say he crashed while trying to elude officers. the students are upset but not seriously injured. an arizona father faces punishment for inflicting harsh punishment on his children. he forced his kids kids to drink alcohol. but he claims it was for a good reason. >> it hurts. >> reporter: christopher harvey admits he probably went too far. >> unfortunately, it was something i learned, that this is how you teach your children. yet now i realize, it was the biggest mistake of my life. >> reporter: the valley dad said he learned his sons were sneaking alcohol when he wasn't home. that's when harvey told cbs 5, he made his 13- and 14-year-old boys consume shots of hard liquor. >> i was trying to teach my

boys, this is the cause and effect of it and what this what it is going to do for you. >> reporter: but this turned into a crime call when a neighbor heard the boys screaming in the pool. harvey said they jumped in. >> i lost my job over my children. iefs now got -- i've now got to come up with money to have an attorney just to keep from doing 17 to life on two accounts remember. >> harvey's friends insist he is not a bad person. >> everybody has different forms of teaching their children. i think he chose the wrong way. but not out of malice, out of love for his kids. >> i don't think i'm a bad guy. but i do have some issues. with drinking and i'm actually going to be going in to aa meetings, going in to see a preacher or a pastor. >> that was jason jason berry reporting.

harvey faces two counts of child abuse. his sons were treated at an area hospital. a high school graduation takes a spin in new jersey. parents spotted a funnel cloud. hail, rain and wind pelted the crowd. some people, as you can see, ran for cover. but most others stayed outside to watch the storm. fortunately, no one was hurt. well, some historical places are all wet. but an important one in baltimore's harbor was marked anyway, as this day kicks off the bicentennial of the war of 1812. alex demetrick reports, this historical marker ties right into maryland's star-spangled sail-a-bration. >> one of the stars is setting the navigation buoys. and this year, painted in stars and stripe, is set. >> this is a purely ceremonial buoy that mashes an important part in american history. it is not used for navigation at all. >> reporter: that history is

francis scott key's writing of the "star spangled banner" in 1812. >> the approximate spot was -- francis scott key wrote those words. his visual snapshot of what occurred over a 25-year period. >> reporter: the coast guard has been marking this historical spot since 1972. every year, there is a small ceremony, as the buoy was set. tom was a young coast guardsman that year and has photos, memories and an invitation to come along this time. >> it's an honor to be here. it's 40 years to the day. it's about when we put this boy -- buty out. it's-- buoy out. it's a milestone. >> reporter: this makes this tradition something special. marking on water, the place an eyewitness once watched a critical piece of american history unfold, and where it still flies unfurled, 200 years later. >> and the buoy marking the star spangled banner will

it's a great friday weather, tim. perfect! >> it really is, mary. i don't know how it gets much better than this. >> no. >> the dew point and the humidity levels are low. but the temperatures are in the 80s. you know, i don't know. just drag your tv out on the deck, take the crabs out on the deck. just stay outside. just enjoy it. and the pollen has been down. so you know, we have the best of all the worlds right now.

and this is going to be the case for the foreseeable future. right now, we have temperatures in the low 80s around much of the area. 84 degrees our temperature. 49 is the dew point. which gives us a relative humidity of twain% -- 29%. we're getting a northwest wind, which is a dry, cooler air mass. now, it is cool in the scheme of things. it starts to warm up, the westerly component of this, warms up as it comes down the mountains. but because of the northerly portions, we're not getting the high humidity levels. we have 74 in oakland. 81 in cumberland. 80 in hagerstown. 83 in elkton. 70s in patuxent river and ocean city. and around the immediate metro area, we're all in the low to mid-80s. we have 82 in bel air and rock hall. 83 in annapolis and kent island. and 84 right on down that 270 stretch. we're going from westminster out toward frederick, down toward howard county and d.c. winds coming from the west/northwest.

higher winds down toward reagan national, at 13 miles an hour. but it's just a delightful afternoon. also, the by-product of that northwest wind, with the dryer air, is that we don't have clouds. clouds don't survive, where there's no moimpt. and we don't-- moisture. and we don't have hardly a cloud to be found out there. we have maybe a few trying to make their way past central pennsylvania. but really, they're not going to impact us too much at all. the high pressure in control right now is going to continue to sink down to the carolina, georgia coastline. as high pressure goes, as we all know, it is the clockwise flow around high, that is allowing for warm air to continue pushing in. it's taking us into the 80s today. yesterday, we were right around 80. tomorrow, we'll be in the mid- to upper 80s. and then we'll be closer to 90 degrees, heading into the weekend. cooler air is still up to our north. and northeast. and that's being locked up there, at least currently by the jet stream that is just keeping all of our air separated. right now, we're being looing at high. -- we're looking at high. next high tide is tomorrow

>> following the headlines, like tsa agents busted for impproper -- improper screenings, he took the brunt of the criticism. >> with over 630 million people in a year, we are not going to have 100% customer satisfaction. >> reporter: tsa staff has increased nearly 400% from 16,500 workers no in 2001 to more than 65,000 now. but pistol said demand toss cut the agency's ballooning work force won't fly. >> i believe the personnel we have currently are necessary to provide the security the american people expect today. >> would you say that the tsa, as it stands today, is effective in protecting the american people? >> i believe that it is effective. there is no question in my mind about that. >> reporter: former deputy tsa administrator, tom blank, says while criticism is expected, it's important for people to remember why the tsa got

started in the first place. >> what we're going through out there is connected directly to 9/11. we know from incidents that have happened that aviation is still a key sector of interest to those that would do us harm. >> reporter: whit johnson, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the tsa recently said anyone over 75 years old, or under the age of 12, can keep their shoes on during security checks. the ohio teenager accused in a deadly school shooting is back in court to enter a plea. mare sein the -- mary is in the newsroom with more. >> the 17-year-old pleads not guilty at his arraignment and tells a judge he understands the charges against him. this comes just days after the judge indicted. prosecutors say he admitted to opening fire on the shardon high school cafeteria in february. three students died. a judge ruled last month that lane will face life in prison if convicted. >> no motive has been

established for the shootings. another brutal massacre in syria. today, international pressure is building against the country's president, who refuses to step down. tina kraus reports for wjz, world leaders are calling for an end to the violence. >> reporter: syrian residents ran through the streets to find shelter. from the gunfire and shelling hitting neighborhoods in and around the city of holmes. activists say syrian troops are still bombarding the area, one of the hardest-hit regions since the 15-month-old conflict began. >> syria has a real challenge. >> reporter: united nations' peace envoy, kofi annan, brokered a deal in april. but it hasn't stopped the violence. secretary of state hillary clinton says the u.s. is putting more pressure on russia, to support a plan that would push president bashar assad out. about 300u.n. observers are on the ground in

syria to observe the violence. one team has reportedly reached the point of massacre wednesday, where 78 people were shot, stabbed or burned alive. u.n. officials say assad and his government have lost all legitimacy. but assad blames terrorist groups for the killings and says they must put down their weapons first. >> reporter: amateur video claims to show a government tank rebels threw in the street. this free syrian army soldier says, we am stand against assad, until he is wiped out, we will fight until the end. u.n. officials warn, if the crisis doesn't stop soon, it could explode beyond syria's borders and trigger a catastrophe in the region. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> u.n. monitors have reportedly come under fire from syrian troops as they try to make it into hard-hit neighborhoods. tragedy in florida. a family of six dies in a plane crash. the small plane broke apart over a swampy area in polk

county, killing a businessman, his wife, and their four children. they were traveling from the bahamas to their home in kansas. investigators still need to locate the body of a 13-year- old who was apparently ejected when the plane broke in half before the crash. the ntsb is looking for a cause. a danger to children. maryland becomes the first state to ban the sale of crib bumperless. a spokesperson says it can strangle a baby and the risks outweigh the benefits. the ban begins next year, to give retailers 9 months to compare to comply with the ban. a new study shows teenagers are smoking marijuana more than they smoked cigarettes. the survey is from the centers for disease control. 22% said they recently smoked pot, while 18% say they smoked cigarettes. for decades, the number its of teens who smoke has been on the decline. but marijuana use has been on the way back up. a former high school

football star spends years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. bill whittaker reports for wjz. he's trying out forecast -- for the seattle seahawks. >> is it the dream come true? >> brian banks knows about dreams and nightmares. >> look where i am. look where i am today. i thank god for this. >> the 26-year-old former high school football star got the chance to show the coaches of the seattle seahawks what he can do. >> he hasn't played since high school. but head coach pete carroll said banks did so well on this solo tryout, he was invited back to try out with the entire team. >> this is the guy that just deserved it. so because of our conversations, we had a chance to come here today and work out with us. >> reporter: at 16, banks was the linebacker for long beach poly. a southern california pour house. he was offered a full scholarship to usc when pete carroll was there. but his hopes were distinguished when -- dashed

when a student accused him of rape. he vehemently denied it, and there was no evidence. but his attorney urged him to take a plea bargain. >> you will automatically be assumed guilty. those were her exact words. >> his accuser asked him to be friendoss facebook. -- friends on facebook. he convinced her to meet him at the office of a private investigator, who recorded the entire thing. last month, a california court cleared him of the crime. four days later, he got a phone call. >> it was pete carroll, asking if i knew any linebackers, he was looking for a linebacker. i said, you got the right number. >> banks said his opportunity to try out for the nfl is like winning the super bowl and going to disneyland 10 times. we are just hours away from the weekend. and we couldn't ask for better

hundreds of students continue to rally against proposed division hikes in canada. a dozen people were arrested as protestors clashed with police in montral. the strike began about four months ago, when the government announced it would raise tuition fees by 75% over the next five years. demonstrators are also targeting a new anti-protest law. a greek politician is in big trouble, after slapping a woman on live television. coming up. it all started when the man threw a glass of water at a woman from the opposing party on a popular morning talk show. another woman stepped in and asked the man to leave, but he refused and slapped her in the

face. now he is facing charges. los angeles police are talking with police in canada to see if a horrific murder there might be connected to an equally disturbing murder in california. juan fernandez reports, the canadian case involves a man who allegedly killed, dismembered, and ate parts of his lover. >> reporter: in a story that has captured international headlines, 29-year-old luca magnatta was arrested thursday for the killing and dismemberment of his one-time boyfriend, june lynn in canada. now, they want to see if he is connected to magdadda. medelen's severed head and feet were found in a park. jeff dimarco, a former fbi profiler, not connected to either case, says investigators will look at characteristics in both cases for a possible link. >> criminals may conduct a crime in a certain way, and that's their modus operandi.

but they also leave behind a signature. and that is, they add something to it that makes it uniquely theirs. >> reporter: dimarco says while dna evidence would be a slam dunk, there are other markers left behind a killer that could put magnatta at the apartment or crime scene. >> could be hairs, fibers, anything that would be unique to him, that he left at that crime scene for us, law enforcement, to find. >> reporter: according to a report in the sun, magnatta, was working as a gay prostitute in los angeles, at the time medellen was murdered. in a statement released by the lapd, the lapd says, "our investigators are in contact with canadian investigators and are trying to determine mag nata's whereabouts during the time of the hollywood hills murder. >> luke magnatta is expected to be extradited to the u.s. from germany in the next few days. a fire kills three girls. and their grandparents. now, the state's attorney says no criminal charges will be

well, this kind of weather can pump you up, bob, make you feel really good. >> this is a day to ring the bell anywhere. liberty bell, any bell. it's a bell-ringing kind of day. let's take a look at temperatures around the region. very pleasantly warm because it's so dry. and that's going to be an important factor the next couple of days. and through the weekend, remains rather dry. but it's going to get pretty hot. early next week, however, the humidity will be coming back. and i think you'll feel it. 84 now. but the dew point is only 49. if the dew point were 65, 66, you'd feel that humidity right now. but it's only 29% humidity. and the winds northwest of 9. and the barometer, actually holding steady. 29.94 inches. around the state, a pleasant 74, ocean city. 81 in cumberland. and baltimore and d.c. now, at 84.

locally, low to mid-80s still around the area. even down by the bay. it's 83. annapolis and kent island. a northwest wind. now, the northwest winds, they come down the mountains, from high elevations to the north and west. most of these mountains are 2,000 to 3,000 feet. as the winds come down the mountains, they tend to heat up a couple of degrees. even 4, 5, 6, 7 degrees. but they also tend to dry out. when we get a real southerly or southwesterly wind or southeasterly wind, that can heat up up. and that's what we think might happen maybe early next week. to the north of us, still have the showers and storms. because that's the dividing line between cooler air and this warmer air that is coming from the south and southwest. but for the most part, we're looking at really clear skies. just a few clouds hanging across pennsylvania. high pressure going to head off the east coast: that means warm temperatures continue. to the north, sunday afternoon, our front will get close to the region, late in the day sunday. may make it into the
