massive man hasn't, a deadly shooting near auburn university's campus. three football stars among the dead, tonight the search for the gunmen. now police are speaking out on the investigation and search for the killer. >> reporter: yellow police take surrounds the apartment complex where authorities say a man opened fire killing three people and injurying three others. two of the dead are former auburn football players. police say the incident began with a fight at a saturday night party. >> this is a trying time, it's six young people have been shot and we're, as you can tell the community is shaken by this. >> reporter: authorities are searching for the alleged shooter.

desmonte leonard. he says he faces three capital murder charges and thinks he may be hiding out about an hour away in montgomery county. police are not releasing a motive for the shootings. but they say they don't think football was a factor. >> the only connection that the auburn football has is they are victims of a brutal shooting. sometimes the young men get a bad wrap i feel like, but they are the victims today. >> reporter: the dead former football players are 20-year- old edward christian and lederius phillips. a current player, eric mac was wounded. auburn's police chief says his department plans to do everything he can to bring this case to a close. in auburn alabama, drew levinson. >> we also just got word that police are also looking for two other people described as persons of interest. we'll have the latest tonight at 11:00. opening statements are expected tomorrow in the child sex abuse trial of jerry

sandusky. the football coach is accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15 year period. he is facing a charge of 52 criminal charges. the judge dismissed his attorney's efforts to throw the case out of court. sandusky has pled not guilty. a woman is accused of kidnapping a baby. that 20-year-old kendrick gah took a 10-year-old from their home. the child was returned safely. they say she is a friend of the bilogical mother. a lawmakers says bottle tax talks are not happening fast enough so she's proposing a motion to speed it up. >> reporter: the bottle tax

bill sits lingering in a committee that is controlled by the bottle tax opponents. >> reporter: it's been one of the hottest debates to hit the city council for year adding 5- cents to the city's bottle tax in order to help save money for school construction. now months after the mayor introduced that plan, city council members may finally be close to a vote. >> monday i will make the motion to move the bill out of committee. it's an option. >> reporter: ricesinger says opposition from key members of the budget and taxation committee including stokes has kept the bottle tax lingering for too long. >> 2/3 want to vote for this and it is it's democracy to give my colleagues the option to vote. it's a city wide issue. that's why we're doing it.

>> reporter: the bottle tax plan has found opposition from grocery stores who say the added tax is bad for business. but supporters say the conditions inside many schools are too deplorable to wait for bottle tax opponents to come up with another viable solution. >> i will not kick the can down the road any further and ignore the state of our schools. >> i told my colleagues i don't want to be doing this every time someone gets mad because that builds up in past committees. but this is a special service. >> reporter: if the petition passes, if the bottle tax bill is brought to the full floor for all of the city council to vote on it it is expected to pass and if it does pass it is possible that the major could sign that bottle tax bill by the end of the month. live at city hall, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> certainly sounds like a rush is on for that der -- derek.

meanwhile the mayor has named a new panel in the search for the city's new police commissioner. the panel will conduct interviews. his last day at the postis coming up august 1st. a fredrick county man is facing charges after a violent road rage crash. cody hickerson rear ended a car that honked at him. investigators also say they found alcoholic beverage. he and the other drivers remain hospitalized tonight.

no word on their conditions. the crib is supposed to be a safe place for babies but doctors say crib bumpers could turn into a death trap. tonight gigi barnett explains maryland is now pushing a plan to ban them all together. >> reporter: dilia rashan has never used a baby bumper, not for her newborn or her son. >> there's a risk that their head can become entrapped on the side of their crib bumper and the crib itself. >> reporter: that's exactly why the state department of health and hygiene moved to take the bumpers out of store shelves. >> there's been an increasing number of reports in the united states and in other countries of real tragedies that have happened. >> reporter: dr. sharpstein heads the safe department of health he says the number of cases are small and manufacturers try to convince him that the bumpers are safe.

maryland has seen one confirmed baby bumper safe and nine deaths. >> that message is hard to deliver when everywhere you go these bumpers are for sale. >> reporter: the ban does not apply for the mesh bumpers or vertical bumpers. the best option for parents to keep kids safe is no bumper at all. gigi barnett. >> back in october the american pediatrics has recommended to

it's mostly sunny and 90 degrees in central maryland right now. tim will have if complete first warning weather forecast in just a minute. but first firefighters are struggling to get a handle on a 500-acre wildfire. the high park fire has now destroyed or damaged at least 10 structures. today evacuation notices were sent out to at least 48 homes. >> throughout the day we've done, emergency notifications over the phone system, but as everyone is aware those are not always reliable so we followed those every chance we had with firefighters or deputies going house to house. the cause of this massive fire is still unknown tonight. a local official in california is arrested on child abuse charges after a violent

video goes viral. 34-year-old anthony sanchez who's a director with the irrigation district in california was allegedly caught here on video beating his stepson with a belt during a game of catch. that video sparked outrage earlier this week and now his attorney says sanchez has posted a $100,000 bail on friday night. heavy rains are drenching florida and they're also slowing down some drivers, the storms dumped nearly 13-inches of rain in pensacola alone. some decided forget the car let's just use our canoes. rain has been falling all along the coast since friday. it is expected to continue until late tonight. if you're here in maryland what a perfect weekend to the be at -- to be at one of the beaches. >> if you picked this weekend for any reason to go down to

downtown. imagine standing out in the middle of field for like three hours. >> i would do anything for adam jones salary. >> he earned it today. 96 down there in the middle of that field i'm sure it was easily feeling like 100. >> is this going to continue for a while? >> one more day. we got to 94 today. we were very close. the record was 97 at vwi marshal. our average high 82. and 96 downtown at the science center. our overnight lows have been in the 60s, 65 last night. and then average is 60 and the record of course 49. nowhere near that at all. the dewpoints have been relatively low. the only reason it feels as comfortable as it does outside and not so muggy is because the dewpoint is the low. the relative humidity is low. with 91 degrees it's tolerable. it's doable out there. it's not too bad and we haven't had too many heat related problems reported as a result. 91 in easton still at this hour

and that's near the water. 91 in columbia, 87 in bell air and 90 in westminster. winds coming in from the west and southwest. so even if you were fortunate enough to have the clouds blocked the sun for a minute or two. the winds were still bringing in that very warm air and again our neighbors to our south have been in the same temperature zone that we have been. expect until you get down to atlanta, near florida where the rain have cooled things down. our next rainmaker is going to come in. it's a system we've been watching around a alabama. tuesday into wednesday, wednesday is going to be the main rain day. the warm temperatures stay with us through tomorrow. the rain starts to move in here tuesday night into wednesday. thunderstorms very likely in the forecast for those two time periods. then we start to see things cool down heading into the week. our sunrise tomorrow is 5:40. no advisories in the bay. southeast winds at five to 10 knots. 65degrees, we're going partly cloudy and mild this evening,

o's winning. they're off tomorrow then welcoming the pirates straight on tuesday. >> we're able to take advantage of some mistakes and matt put a good swing on the ball and luckily we had our guys out there running. >> andy pet táeu -- pettitte bare handed catch. his second homer of the game. yankees win 5-4. last night, the miami heat successfully rallied back then wore down the boston celtics eastern conference final in miami. the heat got 21-12 from lebron james. and 101-88 at aod 23 for dwayne wade. they now prepare for the championship round. the nba finals starting tuesday night in oklahoma city. it'll be the heat versus the thunder for the big title.
