assault. good afternoon, i'm don scott. >> i'm jessica carkartaliga. >> the opening statements in the jerry sandusky sex abuse case. the trial begins for the former penn state assistant football coach charged with molesting 10 boys over a 15 year period. >> jerry sandusky could come face to face with his accusers as early as today. a jury of 7 women and 5 men listened as the prosecution began to lay out its case. they showed pictures of eight boys, describing how sandusky befriended them and sexual abused them. >> there's no physical evidence. it's he said verses he said. there were a lot of hes in this case. >> legal experts say the credibility of the accusers will make our -- or break the case. the defense will try to find discrepancy. >> the men ages 18 to 28 will

be named publicly in court for the first time. they sat up a tent outside the courthouse so the accusers could come and go as privately as possible. >> prosecutors expect to show how he gave the boys gifts. he met many of the accusers at second mile, the charity he founded. a key witness for prosecutors will likely be penn state assistant coach mike mcquery. he's expected to testify he saw him sexual assault a boy in a campus shower. that boy has yet to come forward. >> 8 of the 12 jurors have ties to penn state university. we're learning more about two hit and run understand didn'ts involving the -- incidents involving the nation's commerce secretary. ron matz is in the news room. >> reporter: good afternoon. a government spokesperson saz john

bryson suffered a seizure. the first accident happened at a train crossing over the weekend. he reportedly drove off and hit another car minutes later. police do not believe he was driving under the influence. >> no alcohol or drugs were a factor in either accident at this time. the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: bryson was treated for non-life threatening injuries and sited for a felony hit and run but hasn't been formally changed. >> president obama has yet to comment on the investigation. bryson is a key member of the president's economic team working to create jobs. a woman is behind bars charged with kidnapping a baby. police say she snatched the 10 month old from his house in pikesville on saturday. police say she is a friend of the baby's mother and they believe she took the baby out some sort of custody dispute. they were found an hour after the incident

and the baby is back at home. the debate over a tax on bottle benches -- beverages is heating up. mike hellgren has more on where that money would go. >> reporter: it would go to fix crumbling schools and build new runs. some council members are trying a take i can to get to a full vote. >> a proposal to more than double the tax on bottle beverages in baltimore city may go to a full voit of the city council, getting -- vote of the city council, getting around the committee where it's been stalled. >> i will not ignore it anymore and try to help our schools. >> the mayor wants the tax to pay for improvements to city schools. it faces strong opposition from retailers. >> i struggle with the idea that you're putting more burden on top of people trying to support the city.

>> the tax would go from 2 cents to 5 cents fchl it -- cents. if it's pass ed by the council the mayor could sign it by the end of the month. >> reporter: retailers opposed to this are working on a count proposal to raise money and are lobbies city council members right now. >> thank you. the city council meeting starts tonight at 5:00. we will stay on top of any vote. the mayor has appointed a special committee to search for the next top cop. it will interview potential candidates to replace fred bufeld. he will be leaving the department in august after a lifetime on the baltimore city police force. it's time to break out the shorts and sunscreen as temperatures move into the 9 tos -- 90s today. that's a good way to stay cool.

hunt is underway for the gunman. desmonte leonard opened fire killing 3 people and wounding several others. among the dead two former auburn football players. witnesses and neighbors say the shooting stemmed over a fight over a woman. >> i can't explain in words what happened. i just feel bad knowing that it happened in my neighborhood and i see these people every day. >> us chilling with all these females to a miss -- to a massacre for no reason. >> police say he will face three counts of capitol murder. clemons is on trial for lying to congress when he denied using steroids. closinging arguments are -- closing arguments are expected to start tomorrow. a geek politician is coming out of hiding today.

so it's 89. it's a degree cooler than at this time yesterday. there's no question, we're going to be getting into the low 90s. now, we're still calling for a high of 88, but that is at bwi marshall. we can get hung up in numbers and stats and location, location, location. the fact of the matter is, maybe everywhere but

that official temperature it's going to be over 90. we're not looking for any showers. look at the radar. this humid unstable air mass about to be invaded by slow moving cold front. tonight rain by bedtime is likely. can't even rule out a thunderstorm. right now we're not in any risk box. right now as that energy movers -- moves our way we're going to be seeing thunderstorms and showers. the more sun you see tomorrow the more we're going to warm up. there's nothing along the coast that's going to hold this front up. it's going to get through the area. skies are going to clear out wednesday as we start the bicentennial of the war of 1812. by the time we get to the week's end and weekend when don is out
