out-of-control city firefighters battling a five- alarm fire in fells point. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. kai has the afternoon off. here's what people are talking about. we have that breaking news from southeast baltimore. a five-alarm fire, raging out of control at a vacant building near register street and broadway in fells point. wjz is live with complete coverage. meghan mccorkell is in fells point, has more on the fire, and what is going on right now. meghan? >> reporter: well, mary, as you mentioned, this fire has reached five alarms at this point. you might be able to hear some of the emergency vehicles behind me. that's because people are speeding by to get to this scene. the fire sparked around 1:40 this afternoon. and there has been a continuous amount of emergency vehicles, arriving since then. they do look like they are getting a leg up on the fire.

i was driving to work, just an hour ago. and there was just thick, black smoke, coming into the air. i can see it from canton. pound wound up stopping my car to walk down and see what it is. and there are hundreds of people in this street, looking at the firefighters, trying to fight this fire. now, we're told that they entered the building. but the building was just too hot. they believe it's a vacant building. there's combustible materials in it. it's in the 500 block of broadway. again, the smoke is still pretty thick. i actually walked up towards eastern avenue. when i walked up that way, couldn't even see in front of my face. i just kept walking. people that were walking in front of me were just disappearing into the smoke. we finally turned back because it was too thick. and we're south of the fire now, where the air is a little better because the wind is going the other way. but again, firefighters battling this fire, just a few minutes ago. they were climbing up the ladders, trying to attack from the roof. we'll continue monitoring this situation: mary, at this

point, we know there is no injuries. but it is still a developing story. >> thank you. our live complete coverage of the fells point five-alarm fire continues. kristy breslin is live with more. kristy, that is really thick smoke around there. it's got to be impacting traffic. >> oh, mary. absolutely. obviously the best thing to do would be to avoid the area. but we have it blocked off. it's south register street, between fleet street and eastern avenue. but basically, there is no accessing south broadway, in or out of fells point. it's definitely causing traffic problems. we have an accident south broadway street at eastern avenue. so the best way to get around that would be broadway street. you can even take lombard, pratt, or alsanto. we'll keep you up to date on the breaking news, involving this five-alarm fire. >> first warning weather coverage continues. bob is live with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob, what about the wind blowing and that smoke? i mean... >> yeah.

we have a southeast breeze, anywhere from 10 to 15 miles an hour. so it's blowing the smoke to the northwest. take a look at temperatures downtown. 89 degrees. it's not all that humid. but i'm sure with 30 pounds of equipment, it's pretty tough fighting a fire. currently winds with the southeast, anywhere from as you can see, pretty light. to the south, baltimore region, 14-mile-an-hour winds. that's helping to really blow the smoke around. not helping to put the fire out. we'll update the forecast and the temperatures and rain headed our way coming up. mary? >> all right, bob. thanks. we'll continue to update the breaking news, the five-alarm fire throughout our newscast. a navy aircraft crashes on maryland's eastern shore. it happened on the river in wicomico county, about 20 miles west of salt lake city. no one was on the ground was hurt. the coast guard is setting up a safety zone where the marsh occurred. the 100-foot vehicle crashed around noon today.

wjz is closely monitoring the situation. we'll bring you updates as soon as we have them. well, jiry sandusky jerry sandusky listens in court today, as one of his accusers testifies against him on day one of his sexual abuse trial. manuel gallegus reports. >> reporter: accused child predator jerry sandusky sat quietly, as one of the 10 men he's accused of molesting took the stand. the 21-year-old man testified how sandusky befriended him. he testified how he started showering with sandusky on the penn state campus when he was 13 or 14. those showers they took after exercising soon became more physical. he said, quote, eventually, the horsing around would lead to him splashing soap on me, bear hugging me, hugging me, caressing me, take my hand to has body. the man testified sandusky would try to rape him in the

shower and would masturbate. sandusky's wife dottie entered the hotel room, as jerry was trying to get him to perform oral sex. she said, what are you doing in there? and sandusky abruptsly stopped. the prosecutor asked the boy, why he never told anyone about the abuse. did you say anything? no. did you tell anybody? no. i was too scared too. >> and he testified he didn't want to lose all of the are the great gifts and opportunities sandusky offered him, like being part of the penn state football family. >> reporter: in opening statements, sandusky told the jurors that the testimony would be awful, but not necessarily true. he suggested money is motivating the men. >> reporter: the trial is expected to last at least three weeks, with penn state officials and family members of sandusky and the late coach joe paterno on the witness list. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> and san dunky's lawyer told jurors that it was not odd that his client showered with

children because that was part of sandusky's culture and how his generation grew up. backing former syracuse university bernie fine's claims that he's innocent of sexually abusing a ball boy. a 2005 internal investigation ordered by the university finds no witnesses who believe the accuser's story. fine was fire back in november after the allegations became public. fine is not facing any criminal charges. well, the president's commerce secretary is facing felony hit-and-run charges today. john bryson was behind the wheel of a car, involved in two traffic accidents. bigad shaban reports for wjz. the white house says bryson had a seizure. >> reporter: a government spokesperson says commerce secretary john bryson suffered a seizure at the wheel of his car, when he allegedly caused two separate crashes near los angeles saturday. brieseson spent a night near the hospital for observation and returned to washington. white house spokesman jay carney said the president's chief of staff, jack lu, spoke

to bryson this morning. >> we're obviously concerned about the incident, concerned about secretary bryson's health- related issues that played a role in this incident. >> reporter: police say bryson crashed his lexus into another car that was stopped, waiting for a train to pass. they say he spoke to the three men inside the vehicle and then hit their car as he drove away. there were no passengers in bryson's car. now, a spokesperson says he was on personal time and had no security with him. >> reporter: minutes later, bryson allegedly hit another car in the neighboring city of rosemead and was found unconscious. he was given medication for the seizure and was hospitalized. nobody was seriously hurt in the accident. bryson was cited for felony hit- and-run but was not charged. the secretary voluntarily took a breathalizer test after the accident, according to the l.a. sheriff's department. >> no alcohol or drugs were a factdzor in either accident at this time. but the investigation is ongoing. >> bryson was also given a blood test.

investigators are waiting for those results. the commerce secretary was in california to deliver a commencement address and has a home in nearby san marino. in san gabriel, california, bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> the obama administration still gathering information about the accidents and bryson's medical condition. well, preparing for a presidential visit this crime tomorrow, president obama will be fundraising in maryland for campaign 2012. wjz is live. rochelle richie has details. >> mary, president obama is going to spend several hours in the state tomorrow, attending two private fundraisers. first, we'll stop at the home of an owings mills developer, josh spitler and his wife jeanne. they will host a lunch that will cost guests $50,000. the second is tomorrow afternoon. that event could raise about a million dollars for the president's campaign. and romney will also be in maryland tomorrow, campaigning for her husband, republican presidential candidate mitt

it's sunny, 87 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. we are updating now, a breaking news in southeast baltimore. the five-alarm fire continues to burn in fells point. sky eye chopper 13 over the 500 block of south register street. some kind of combustible material inside the building is feeding that fire, making it very difficult for firefighters to put it out. the roof and a wall collapsed while firefighters were pouring water on the flames at one point. so all firefighters were evacuated. the fire is being battled now from the outside of the building. we are told about 100 firefighters are on the scene. one firefighter was injured. rushed to shock trauma. wjz will continue to update you on this breaking news. which continues to affect traffic in the area.

let's check back in with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. kristy? >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. it's definitely going to be chaos in the city today. there is no access to the 500 block of south broadway in either direction. and it is closed off between south register, between fleet street and eastern avenue. we also have an accident, because of all of the activity going on there. aliceanto at south broadway. the best way to get around this would be to take baltimore street, lombard street, pratt, or even access aliceanta as well. as far as the rest of the region goes, we have delays that we're watching. paring -- perring parkway to harford road. another on the west side inner loop. 70 to security boulevard. and a couple of new accidents. washington boulevard, at 195. also in the bel air area. emerton road at lake park drive, back to glen burnie, we have east park at crain highway. let's now take a live look. traffic not too bad there. wilkens avenue. and there's a look at the

all right. taking a live look outside. it is humid out there today. but you know, it feels like june. >> yesterday, we got into the mid-90s. today, only around 90. a little cooler. actually, the humidity is not as high as most people think. in fact, the dew point is actually rather low. take a look at temperature

right now real quick. before we go to radar. we're at 87. okay? but the dew point is only 61. that means the real-feel is, guess what? 87. there's really no heat index, whatsoever. although some people feel it's hot and humid. this is no kind of humidity, compared to what we'll see this summer. 30.09, the barometer. south/southeast winds at 10. now, let's take a look at radar. there is some shower activity developing down to the south, across virginia. and a few popped up northeast of maryland. but not much. bulk of the activity right down 95. and later tonight, some of these showers move in the area. and a bunch of rain across richmond, down in virginia, will be moving into the area later tonight. tomorrow looks like a wet day. could be some heavy downpours tomorrow. could be easily an inch or more of rain in a lot of spots. a look at the west of the temperatures around the area. right now, 74 only in oakland. 85 in hagerstown. 87 here. and 76, ocean city. the hot spot, easton. a lot of sunshine.

they're still at 91 degrees. locally. mid- to upper 80s. really not excessive because the normal high is 81 degrees. 88 aafapol -- annapolis. ask kent island. southeast winds kept a little cooler air in from the ocean. the humidity will definitely be coming back tonight. later on, the humidity increases. however, by wednesday afternoon, all of that rain will be off to the east, as a front moves through the area. we do expect to see quite a bit of shower activity tomorrow, beginning late tonight. but it will dry out on wednesday and temperatures begin to drop. see that rain down to the south? it's moving right up across the region. and that front to the west is going to kind of push all of that across the mid-atlantic region. i think some spots are going to get more than 2 inches of rain. and that could cause minor flooding in some low-lying areas. be watching that. big batch of rain here in the carolinas. spotty stuff to the west. but it's going to come together eventually. south winds, gusting to 20 knots on the bay.

thanks for stiing with eyewitness news -- staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. vic has the afternoon off. a five-alarm fire is raging out of control at a vacant building on south broadway in fells point. meghan mccorkell is on the ground at fells point. what can you tell us, meghan? >> i want to show you what our vantage point looks like. we have been pushed back several blocks from that fire. we are told that the roof of that building has collapsed. it does, however, look like they are making headway. we are not seeing the kind of smoke we saw earlier. we actually have been seeing some emergency vehicles start to leave the scene. and we understand that this was some sort of vacant wayhouse -- ware house building in the 500 block of fells point. firefighters respond to the scene. and we learn at least two firefighters have been injured. we are told they are minor injuries at this point. firefighter the tell us this is a vacapt building. -- vacant building. we spoke with the chief

earlier. and he gave us a little more information about this building. >> it's an old department store building. three-story commercial building that goes all the way through from broadway back to register street. most of the fire actually is back on register street. just trying to keep it in the building it's in. >> reporter: and again, firefighters when we were over there, they're using the ladder trucks off of broadway to get on roofs of neighboring buildings to try to attack the fire that way. i gotta tell you, at one point, the smoke was so thick, you couldn't even walk down the street. you couldn't see a foot in front of you north of here. up on eastern, i walked in that area. people were just disappearing into the smoke in front of me. now, we have been monitoring the situation. it does look like the smoke has significantly dissipated in this area. again, firefighters still fighting that blaze in the 500 block of broadway. we'll continue to follow this developing story. i'm meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you very much, meghan.

our live coverage continues with captain jeff long, in sky eye chopper 13. he's been over the scene all afternoon. hello, jeff. and what are you seeing from where you are right now? >> hello. from where we're parked over here at fells point, it does appear as though the volume of smoke, coming over top of this building, has decreased. and that's happened just in the last 10 to 15 minutes. and it's also gone from a really dark, thick smoke to a lighter colored smoke. so hopefully the firefighters are getting an upper hand on this thing. we did count at this point, at least 12 different fire vehicles on the ground. and we also saw on south broadway, a lot of firefighters, taking a break from the heat. back to you in the studio. >> thank you very much, captain jeff long. and we'll have more on this breaking story coming up live at 5:00 and 6:00. wildfires out west are stretching crews to the limit. one fire near fort collins, colorado, doubled in size in one day. and it continues to grow. teresa garcia has the latest for wjz.

>> reporter: the fast-moving fire in northern colorado is burning out of control, destroying a mile of forest every hour. dozens of homes and buildings in the rural area are gone. and hundreds more are threatened. >> it's 0% contained. it's a wildfire, very large, unpredictable, aggressive wildfire. >> reporter: dry conditions are fueling the fire that now covers 60 square miles, bigger than the city of denver. around 1800 people have been told to evacuate. the fire grew so fast, some residents had just minutes to pack. >> and i had to drive past it. and i just kept thinking, just keep driving. just keep driving. >> reporter: on sunday, the fire forced a bride and groom to shorten their wedding ceremony so they could flee, along with their guests. >> so they got their i dos done. and right after that, we had to leave. >> reporter: the red cross is sheltering people and evacuated ranch animals, including horses, sheep, even alpacas. >> reporter: when wayne knolls

fled his home, he grabbed his pack and a wild raccoon. >> just taking care of him until he can get better. >> the military is helping to fight the fire in the sky. but resources are limited. because crews are battling major fires in neighboring states. in the mountains of new mexico, a huge fire has forced hundreds to evacuate. firefighters do not know when they'll be able to get either of these western wildfires under control. teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the thick smoke created by the colorado fire is blowing as far as 200 miles east into nebraska. well, deadly violence near the campus of auburn university, three people are shot and killed at a party. and the gunman is still on the loose. rochelle richie is live with the latest on this search. rochelle? >> reporter: police say they know who this man is. and a massive manhunt is under way to find him. they say this man, damanty leonard opened fire saturday night. three people were killed,

including two former auburn university football players. three others were also hurt. police are searching for leonard in month gomry, bam-- montgomery, alabama, about 50 miles west of auburn. >> thank you so much, rochelle. police say they have a motive for the deadly shootings, but they are not releasing that information at this time. show of support. former congresswoman gabrielle giffords campaigns for the man who is trying to replace her in congress. giffords took the stage for ron barber in tucson yesterday. he was her district director and was shot twice in last year's attack that killed six and left giffords critically injured. voters will decide tomorrow who will take her seat. robert kennedy jr. accused his late wife mary of abusing his children from an earlier marriage. he said that she showed up

uninvited to trips they took after separated and sometimes called dozens of times a day. mary kennedy killed herself in new york. the couple's divorce was still pending when she died. two college students from wisconsin are trapped in the freezing new zealand wilderness. they were there for over a week before finally making their way out. >> reporter: search teams flew over the mountains in new zealand, hoping to find two american students stranded in the bitter cold. alec brown and erica clintsworth, told friends they wanted to relax in the hot springs and study for finals. but they ended up trapped in the snowstorm for nine days before finally hiking over a river for safety. >> we were in hoodies. ask just not the type of thing you want to be wearing and have when you're stuck in a mountain storm. >> reporter: but the university student from wisconsin said they heated themselves up in the hot pools and slept in a covered hammock like this one, to withstand 17-degree

temperatures. they survived on one biscuit and jelly a day. >> clearly, we were pretty comfortable where we were and survived it with no problem. we had all of the right gear to get through it and had clean, fresh water and stay warm and dry. >> reporter: but some rescue workers have criticized the students for being unprepared and not checking the forecast. >> it is frustrating. i mean, there's a lot of work gone into this operation. if the use of a helicopter. >> reporter: a friend dooped -- dropped the calm off at the park for a week-long hiking trip. she called authorities when she didn't hear from her classmates. >> reporter: now, thousands of hikers travel to new zealand each year. last month, three students died after their minivan crashed on the way to a hike. news anchor robin roberts reveals on air today that she is facing a new health issue. >> roberts opened up about her illness on "good morning america." five years ago, she beat breast cancer. but her treatment led to

another serious medical issue. she is now facing mds, a rare blood disorder that affects the bone marrow. the 51-year-old said she is sharing the news because she begins pretreatment today to prepare for a bone marrow transplant. >> the reason i say that i am blessed, my big sister is a virtually perfect match for me. she's there with diane and ann sweeney. and she is going to be my donor. she's going to be my donor. kristy. >> let's give you an update on what closures that fire is be causing. it's between fleet and eastern avenue, completely blocked off. there's really no access to south broadway, coming in or out of fells point. and it is causing congestion. we have an accident there. south broadway at alissanta. you can take baltimore street, pratt street, or even alisant a. but your best course of action would be to stay away from the area. heavy in the northbound direction. from shawan road to belfast. north side inner loop, stop and go there, from dulaney valley road to providence road. and expect about 15 minutes from the west side inner loop, 70 to security boulevard. as far as other accidents go, washington boulevard, at 195. east park at crain highway. and a couple of problems in harford county. an accident there, emerton road, at lake drive. we also have traffic lights out, emerton road, at west.

two days alone. near pensacola, county officials are expecting flood damages to top more than $20 million. and a major cleanup effort is under way in jerusalem after one of israel's most sacred institutions is vandalized. rochelle ritchie is live with more on who investigator says is responsible. >> reporter: investigators believe a holocaust memorial was defaced by jewish militants. the anti-zionist graffiti is at 12 spots at the compound. this saturday latest and mot most calloused attack in jerusalem. one spray-painted a message on the building, thanked hitler for the holocaust. it's unclear how they broke into the memorial, which is under guard 24 hours a day. many orthodox jews reject the state of israel, because they believe a jewish state can only be established by the messiah under those laws.

new fallout today for the california state official caught on tape, beating his stepson with a belt. now, that man is resigning from his office. richard allen has more on the video that shocked neighbors and police. >> i heard him yell, please, please, no. and i heard him crying. >> reporter: imperial county resident oscar lopez says from his upstairs bedroom, he witnessed his neighbor, repeatedly striking his 10-year- old stepson in their backyard, during a game of catch wednesday morning. >> once he started belting the child, i was beside myself. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: lopez started videotaping the incident. each time the boy dropped the ball, the man belts him. at one point, lopez could be heard in the background. >> that's enough. [ bleep ] i have a problem with you [ bleep ] because he won't catch the damn ball. >> but the man wouldn't relent. and at one point turns to confront lobez. >> he confronted me and and asked if i knew who he was. >> reporter: it was 34-year-old

anthony sanchez, a director for the imperlial. and a baseball coach. >> i was extremely disappointed and shocked because this was an elected official. >> lopez took his 32 videoto the sheriff's office. >> number 1 priority is the safety of the child. >> reporter: lopez said after so many minutes of witnessing the beating, he had to take action. >> i couldn't hold back anymore. i charged downstairs, i bolted through the back sliding door, hopped up on the fence and just kind of stayed up there on my hands. you know, hanging on the fence. you know, letting him know somebody had seen him. >> reporter: by that point, sanchez fled inside his home. but lopez believes his neighbor has a lot to answer for. >> no matter how bad your child misbehaves, there's got to be a better way. >> that was richard allen reporting. no charges have been filed. and sanchez's attorney says his client is cooperating with investigators. in today's healthwatch, doctors often tell us to get more sleep. but now there is a particularly good reason for it.

and teresa garcia reports for wjz. >> reporter: dale beck wakes up extra early so he can get to the gym. and that means he's only sleeping 5 or 6 hours a night. >> getting up early and working out has helped me keep that zest throughout the day. >> reporter: but a new study shows people over 45, who regularly sleep less than 6 hours are at higher risk for developing stroke symptoms. those can include a sudden numbness in the body or loss of vision. >> we live in such a 24-hour culture. and the emphasis is on improving your diet, getting more exercise. but we also forget the last thing, which is get some good sleep as well. >> reporter: the study's designers were surprised to find that the people in their group did not have the usual risk factors for stroke. their weight was normal, and they were at a low risk for

sleep apnea. >> reporter: researchers are planning to watch the study group another five years. they want to see if participants go beyond the early symptoms and suffer actual stroke. >> if that's the case, then we can target the sleep through modifying the quality of their sleep, the duration of their sleep. >> reporter: dale beck says for now, he values his workouts more than the sleep he's losing. >> makes me think about it. but then on the other hand, if i don't get my exercise, i'm at a higher risk for something else. >> reporter: researchers say it's healthier to get seven or eight hours a night. and if you're having trouble getting that sleep, ask your doctor for help. in los angeles, teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the study followed 5600 people who also took part in a larger study on the geograph -- geographical and racial differences in stroke patients. well, real-life drama at the home of actor robert deniro. flames rip through an apartment

in neighboring manhattan. a neighbor saw the fire from a window and called for help. no one was hurt. deniro and his family were out of town at the time. investigators believed it started in a dryer. cats really have nine lives. and this little guy used up two. it was caught on tape. witnesses say it took more than an hour to rescue the kitten from a sewer. but after he was free, he still had a very big problem. because somehow the little guy got his head stuck in a soda can as well. very carefully, firefighters were able to cut him out and the kitten is now up for adoption. deserves a nice home. well, it's sticky outside today. but there is dryer air on the way. and bob turk will update the forecast coming up next. ,,,,,,,,,,
