five alarm fire, a massive blaze burns through a sells point landmark. the huge effort to put it out. the obstacles firefighters face and how it started. right now firefighters are still keeping an eye on hot spots after a huge warehouse fire burns for hours. wjz is live in phelps points, megan mccorkel reports on the effort to put it out. >> reporter: you can see firefighters are still out here on the scene tonight. nearly 10 hours after the fire started two firefighters were injured trying to put out this

blaze and it took over 100 to completely put out the flames. thick black smoke fills the sky over phelps point. at street level it's nearly blinding. >> you can see the flames coming through the roof here. >> reporter: firefighters battled the flames shooting out of the old hex department. >> we heard a fire truck go blazing by and a couple of helicopter over head. and he came in saying oh my gosh the whole place is on fire. >> reporter: the roof of the warehouse caving in, two firefighters received injuries as they fought the blaze. others fought extreme temperatures. >> it's extremely hard. we try to keep them through, but they're tough. they do a great job in the heat. >> reporter: firefighters evacuated near by businesses, they did manage to contain the fire to just the hex building. >> it was a little scary especially for the homeowners and businesses around here. >> it's pretty intimidating, we

live like a block away. given that there hasn't been too much rain, a hot day outside, lots of wind. >> reporter: after four hours the fire finally contained leaving behind a shell of a building, the mayor among those now assessing the damage, firefighters will now work to determine what caused the fire in the first place. and neighbors tell us that there's a gross -- grocery store in the first floor of that building. arson investigators will be here tomorrow investigating what caused that blaze. >> thank you very much megan. both of the injured firefighters are expected to be okay. firefighters out west are trying to get these deadly wildfires under control now. so far the flames have already killed one woman and destroyed more than 37,000 acres in colorado. another fire in new mexico ha caused -- has caused thousands

of people to evacuation. the navy plane bursts into flames. the unmanned drone goes down in an unmanned aircraft. they are not sure what caused the accident and no one on the ground was hurt. graphic tales of sexual abuse during the first day of testimony in jerry sandusky's trial. one of his accusers tells his story about what happened with the former coach. >> reporter: jerry sandusky spend the day in court listening to a 28-year-old man testify how the former coach sexually abused him as a teen. often in the showers on a penn state campus. in ha matter of fact tone, the suspect told jurors sandusky befriended him through second mile when he was 13. soon the showers after they

took together led to inappropriate touching and oral sex. did you ever say don't do that to me? it was never talked about ever answered the accuser. basically what happened there it never happened. the man also discussed out of town trips one to a texas bowl game where he said sandusky tried to force him into oral sex in the bathroom of their hotel room. but sandusky was startled when his wife dotty called out from the other room. the boy said he never told anything about the abuse because he didn't want to give out on the gifts and football family lifestyle sandusky provided. the first witness denied he was pushed by money. the man expressed remorse saying he feels responsible for what happened to other victims because he did not speak out

back then. manuel gallegus. >> sandusky's lawyers are expected to argue that he suffering from a psychiatric disorder. our media partners at the baltimore sun reports alex kinua was investigated for having a machete in his dorm room but police never found if weapon in his dorm room. well to this day one of the most grizzly carjackings in maryland history haunts all who remember it. a young mother dragged to her death trying to rescue her daughter. and now 20 years later a victim's mother is finally talking about that day. adam may has the heart wrenching interview. >> reporter: september 8, 1992 began as a joyous morning.

serena's first day of grade school. >> serena was very excited and pam was talking to her. >> reporter: when pam left their home in savage howard county was attacked by two men who wanted her bmw. her daughter was in the backseat of her car, she reached inside trying to save her but her arm got stuck in the vehicle. she was dragged down the road for more than 2 miles to her death. and meanwhile after about a half a mile, the carjackers through that 22 -month-old into the woods near this intersection, she got up and walked into the middle of the road where witnesses picked her up and saw her crying asking for her mother. >> it was very horrific and that was the only word to describe it. >> reporter: jody lilley was

the first on the scene. the crime stunned the nation. >> a carjacking turned into a killing. >> reporter: bernard william was convicted. it shows the actual suspects walking behind pam basu when she was putting her daughter in the car. to this day steve wishes he had noticed them. >> because it was because of the nature of the day. it was, i got careless. >> reporter: serena is now preparing to graduate with a degree in industrial engineering and he shows pam would be very proud. sullivan is serving life without the chance for parol. a retired police officer has just written a book about this crime it's titled fatal destiny. two tax or not to tax the baltimore city council is ready to raise fees on bottled drinks. the council gave preliminary approval to a plan raising the

tax on bottled drinks from two to 5-cents by next year. the beverage industry says it would destroy jobs. the council's final vote is next monday night. a local waitress comes down with a highly contagious disease and tonight she's recovering and speak about what she's gone through. derek valcourt talked to the waitress about her seven month long ordeal. >> reporter: she's only 20 years old and she's already been through a brutal battle with this dangerous disease. >> i liked being -- >> reporter: for months, she dawned the hooters uniform and it's here she says she contracted tb from an infected restaurant manager. >> i noticed that i was losing weight, i wasn't eating as much as i used to. >> reporter: jerry began experiencing many of the common symptoms of tb including

fevers, chills, night sweats and fatigue, but dismissed them as signs of a cold or flu. her diagnosis didn't come until november when the city health department tested for tb. >> that's when they moved me from the emergency room to an isolated room on my own. >> reporter: isolating tb patients is key because the disease is highly contagious. it often attacks the lungs first and if not treated it can be deadly. that's why city health officials sprang into action. >> we've worked with the accomplishment and did a routine investigation and determined that there was no greater public health risk. >> reporter: in a written statement, hooter said hooters of america fully cooperated with the baltimore city health department investigation. jerry spent a month quarantined inside her own home. no visitors allowed expect for

doctors who insisted on watching her consume her many medications. >> it was pretty miserable. >> reporter: though she is no longer contagious, jerry's ordeal is far from over. she has to keep taking medication up until august and her next scheduled check up with the doctor is in july. we're live, derek valcourt, wjz eye witness news. stratton won workers compensation for lost wages and medical expenses. it is the case of the snake that terrified townsend, police are called with reports of a 7- foot python on taylor avenue. but this is what they find. a harmless 4-foot rat snake. not scary unless you are a rat. it was wrangled by animal control, they say they'll hold it for four days then if it's not claimed, it could be yours. it'll be put up for adoption. coming up stranded in the snow for more than a week, how some college students survived in the wild and why some

it is partly cloudy, 77 degrees. the complete forewarning forecast is coming up. take a look at the extent of the flooding in pensacola. dozens of cars are submerged in water. the area received 15-inches of rain in the last week. one person drowned in the heavy surf off pensacola beach. the damage is estimated at $20 million. the man hunt for the suspect in the fatal shootings near auburn university may be nearing an end. police say s.w.a.t. teams have entered a house where they believe desmonte leonard is hiding. leonard is charged with three counts of murder after a shooting during a pool party saturday. two of the victims were former auburn football players.

in poland another incident of hooligonism. 14 people were arrested, organizers say teams could be penalized based on their fan's behavior. two college students from wisconsin are trapped for nine days in the freezing wilderness of new zealand. andrew brown and erica wintstorm were caught in. rescuers criticized the hikers for being unprepared and not checking the forecast. commerce secretary john brison is taking a medical leave of action after being hit in a hit-and-run accident. they found him unconscious in his car.

brison will undergo tests and evaluation during the medical leave he has been sited but not yet charged in those accidents. a life saving breakthrough at the university of maryland medical center. for the first time ever in maryland a patient with an artificial heart receives a heart transplant. >> 64-year-old grant fuser says he is lucky to be alive. earlier this year he was rushed to the university of maryland medical center with congestive heart failure. >> i wasn't that far away from death and didn't know it. >> reporter: doctors immediately knew fuser was a candidate for a heart transplant but to keep him alive until a donor was found, doctors implanted an artificial heart. ummc is the only maryland hospital certified to use the total artificial heart it is the only fda approved device available as a bridge to a heart transplant. >> when you think about it, we had to really trust each other, because we're telling him we

think we need to take out his entire heart. and even though he knew his heart was badly diseased it's still a big step to agree to that. >> reporter: just a month after the artificial heart was pounding in grant's chest, a matching donor became available. so he went back into surgery on his birthday and received the ultimate gift a new heart. and grant is so grateful to the donor. >> you cry a little bit when you first hear about it. a young man lost his life and saved mine and perhaps others. >> reporter: grant went to a rehabilitation hospital for several weeks after the transplant and he was finally able to go home on may 25th. mary bubala, eyewitness news. >> grant should be up and walking in a few weeks. graduates at one massachusetts high school didn't get the usual optimistic commencement address. take a listen to what one of

been high all day. humidity only 67%. the barometer holder steady. right now a very pleasant 66, oakland 68, cumberland and 79 ocean city. dc still at 79 degrees. actually if you've been out it's pretty pleasant. to the west of us and south of us a lot of rain, some of that rain was in florida. we're not going to get that kind of rain. actually they had reports of up to 21-inches of rain in three days. that's just half our year, total in three days. to the west a cold front, shower activity some of it has moved to the south. but we do have a lot of rain and shower activity potential. overnight during the day on tuesday. some of it down here in the region. i do expect to see wet periods during the day. maybe a few breaks and that's when we can see only thunderstorms developing with brief heavy downpours as a front comes through.

designated hitter when he's not playing second base then he returns to big league play. new york tied with the rays for first place, yanks pitcher nova had six strike outs and got big help from the defense. the ray's mccann with the big drive. he will leap above to rob atlanta of run. they've won four in a row and nine of their last 11. in football, derek mason makes his retirement official and he walks away from the game as a raven. making his announcement in owins mill today. even though mason played more years for the tennessee titans he said his heart is in baltimore so he wanted to depart from the game in purple and black. though his time with the ravens was brief. it was impactful. mason is the team leader.
