officials or forces are shelling populated areas and using helicopters and devastating attacks on cities. secretary of state hillary clinton says russia is supplying helicopters to the regime and u.n. monitors have come under attack. graphic video allegedly showing child victims of the fighting in aleppo was posted on the internet. it's not clear how the children were injured or by whom. the u.n. announced that syria has been included on its list of shame countries that kill recruits or sexually assault children during armed conflict. elizabeth palmer has more from the syrian capital, damascus. >> reporter: a police barricade marks the edge of the war zone. fierce fighting made syria's north highway north of homs too dangerous. but the u.n. was allowed through and we went with them. we find mile upon mile of devastation. most civilians have now fled from these towns. but suddenly a family appeared on their way out too.

we're leaving if we have to walk to homs he told us. all along the road, syrian tanks with heavy artillery are dug in. some ready for action, others burnt wrecks after opposition attacks. and hung defiantly on an overpass, the free syrian army flag. the minute we stopped, out they came. opposition fighters hoping to talk to the u.n. until a syrian military helicopter showed up. the united nations says syrian forces have fired missiles from the air over the past few days. it was no longer safe to stay here. we're back with the syrian military now and their fortified check posts on the main highway. things are quiet at the moment. there was a little crackle of gunfire. we can see smoke from explosions, but they say that the fighting over the past few days near this village has been very heavy. we wanted to hear these soldiers' stories, but they

wouldn't speak on camera. just 200 yards further on inside another town, we met their opponent, armed opposition fighters. many of them recent army deserters. >> we will stay in this revolution until we take bashar assad out of this country. >> reporter: back on the street, people saw the u.n. preparing to leave. that meant they said, the shelling was about to resume. >> we need you to stay here. you will be with us. we will save you. you must trust us. >> reporter: but the u.n. mandate is to observe, not to intervene. the opposition was left to the town it controlled, at least for now. some of the free syrian army fighters are simply local men who have picked up arms. but others are army conscripts,

badly paid, demoralized and quite frankly, scared. they look for an opportunity when they're on patrol in an opposition area and make a pact with some friends they trust to slip away into the night. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, damascus. this morning in iraq, dozens have been killed in a series of deadly coordinated bombings. four bombs exploded within hours of each other during a major religious festival in baghdad. the targets were shiites 26 people were killed and dozens injured. the death toll is expected to rise. there were also car bomb attacks where at least 30 others were killed. in northern colorado, firefighting officials say they're slowly starting to get control of a massive wildfire that's burned over 68 square miles of land. the high park fire is blamed for one death. at least 100 buildings have been destroyed or damaged. by yesterday, it was 10% contained. >> it's a slow process as we get fire line constructed. we need to have favorable weather conditions.

we've had that those last few days. >> and southern new mexico, a 56 square mile fire damaged or destroyed more than 200 homes and cabins. there are 19 major wildfires currently burning in nine states. as expected the testimony in the jerry sandusky sexual abuse trial has been graphic. more of the same expected today. yesterday a key prosecution witness said he saw the former penn state assistant football coach sexually abusing a young boy in a campus locker room. manuel gallegus has the report. >> prosecutors tried for a one-two punch in the prosecution trial of jerry sandusky. on the witness stand, one of the men at the center of the penn state scandal, former grad student mike mcqueary. in a deliberate tone, mcqueary testified he entered a campus locker room to find sandusky sexually assaulting a 10 or 12-year-old boy in the shower. mcqueary heard a skin on skin smacking sound and saw sandusky against a boy propped up against the wall. he had no doubt he was

witnessing an extremely sexual act. earlier an 18-year-old accuser sobbed openly as he described being sexually assaulted by sandusky repeatedly from the time he was 12. the teen testified in the hushed courtroom that oral sex would happen at bedtime during frequent sleepovers at sandusky's home while the coach's wife was upstairs. prosecutors asked why he never told or tried to stop it. i didn't know what to do with all the thoughts running through my head the boy testified. i blacked out and didn't want it to happen. i froze. under cross-examination, sandusky's defense tried to find inconsistency in the testimony, questioning the witness's motives and memories. if you want to argue about 9, 10, 11, 12, mcqueary said, the fact is he had sex with a minor, a boy. sandusky locked eyes with mcqueary when he first took the stand but had no visible reaction to the teen's story. manuel gallegus, bellefonte, pennsylvania. the man suspected of shooting three people to death

near auburn university has turned himself in. police have been searching for him for three days. he surrendered yesterday evening. he's charged with three counts of murder from saturday night. three others were wounded. two of the victims were former auburn football players. democrats held on to the seat of gabrielle giffords. giffords hand picked successor, ron barber, defeated jesse kelly in a special election that finished giffords term. barber a former giffords aide was seriously wounded in the same attack in which giffords was shot at a tucson shopping center. the head of jpmorgan chase will testify before congress today about his bank's massive trading losses. jamie dimon is expected to say that the multibillion dollar loss can be blamed on insufficient controls and traders who didn't understand what they were doing. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning to you. >> good morning terrell. >> jamie dimon will do several things today. he will apologize, he will call this an isolated incident and he

will tell members of congress that he has taken steps to ensure this doesn't happen again. jpmorgan chase ceo, jamie dimon will apologize to members of congress today for risky trades the bank undertook that led to huge losses. in prepared testimony, dimon says we have let a lot of people down and we are sorry for it. the bank took part in a trading strategy known as hedging, which is actually designed to reduce the risk of big losses. dimon will explain today that the strategy backfired increasing risk and leading to at least $2 billion in losses and possibly as much as $5 billion. >> they were betting like you would do at the crap table in las vegas. and they bet the wrong way. >> senator tim johnson shall the head of the senate banking committee plans to ask dimon, how can a bank take on far too much risk if the point of the trades was to reduce risk in the first place or was the goal really to make money? some argue the risky trades

would have violated part of the 2010 financial reform bill called dodd/frank. the volker rule, which has yet to go into effect prevents banks from making certain trades for their own profit. dimon was part of a push that exempt some banks from that rule. >> mr. dimon wanted a version of the volker rule that frankly wouldn't do very much. i think we have a stronger argument for volker rule that says no to a bank. >> some argue the regulations will prevent banks from doing business. >> it makes it more difficult for those firms to function and perform their duty for the shareholder value. >> the volker rule is set to go into effect next month. now, outside congress, there are at least five investigations into these losses from the federal reserve, the controller of the currency, the s.e.c., department of justice and the commodities futures trading commission. >> susan, thank you so much. there are growing calls for a special council to look into recent national security leaks. attorney general eric holder testified before the senate judiciary committee yesterday.
