celebrating maryland's rich history in baltimore. >> the once in a lifetime star- spangled sailabration. >> hi, everybody. i'm mare bubala. >> and -- mary bubala. >> and i'm denise koch. and on this flag day, this is what everyone is talking about. the star spangled will sailabration is officially under way. and it feels like a festival down here at the waterfront. 14 captains from 13 different nations were welcomed in a lavish nautical ceremony. wjz is live with coverage on the week-long event, which of course is celebrating the 200th anniversary. war of 1812, and the writing of the star spangled banner, which happened in those waters, right there, about two years later. the spectacular ships made its way up the chesapeake and up

the francis scott key bridge, by the buoy where the star spangled banner was written, as francis scott key stood and wondered if it would still be there when the dawn arose. jsesica kartalija was there during all of the welcoming ceremonies. and she's also at the other end of the harbor. i'm going to throw to her now. >> hello, everyone. we have been having a wonderful day out here. the weather is absolutely gorgeous. we have been watching the blue angels flying over us, practicing their formation today. but it all began with a bunch of pomp and circumstance this morning. >> reporter: an international spotlight on baltimore's inner harbor, as the sale a brasion officially gets under way. >> a ceremony with maryland's top brass. >> we are officially kicking off baltimore's star-spangled sailabration. from indonesia. >> reporter: captains from all

40 ships around the world, are presented with gifts. as the naval ceremonial band plays. ♪ [ music ] visitors from around the world commemorate the war of 1812. >> it's wonderful in baltimore. i want to see everybody. >> it's something to celebrate and give to people that are probably not aware a lot of what's going on. >> reporter: it has really been incredible. people are down here. and they're so excited to be here. many people also getting on board the ship, walking around, talking to the crewmembers. it's all very interesting. of course, we rode in on one yesterday. the ship out of mexico. and today, we hopped on brazil's ship, i'll tell you all about that coming up tonight at 5:30. for now, denise, i'll send it back over the harbor to you. >> aren't you lucky, jessica? you've been on the ship from mexico to new jersey.

very lucky. now issue the sailabration is being launched from the sea and also from land and also from the air. and i imagine the air is the best vantage point for all of these gorgeous ships and all of the people gathered in the inner harbor. that's where jeff long is now. what's it look like from there today, jeff? >> hi, denise. we have a great view of the u.s. navy's blue angels demonstration team. you may have seen or heard these fa18 hornets around the city practicing today. and they'll be doing it again tomorrow. now, this weekend, they will be conducting the world-famous flight demonstration over the middle branch of the patapsco river. you'll be able to catch these and other aerial performances between 1:00 and 4:00, saturday and sunday. several locations have been set up around the city, as public viewing sites. and you can get more information at wjz.com. of course if you have an

event. jessica and denise will continue to bring you our coverage today as we bring you the star-spangled sailabration. in other news today, the atf and city police investigating a string of armed robberies, shoot a suspect. just after 11:30, both agencies tried to arrest a group of men on clifford road in north baltimore. four suspects jumped into a car, tried to run the officers and the agents down. and agents fired a shot at the driver, hitting him in the shoulder. six guns were recovered at the scene. all six suspects are in custody, facing federal charges. baltimore county police say one of their off-duty officers got into a fight with a teenager, leading to the 17-year-old's death. pat warren is live in the newsroom to explain how the incident began. pat? >> well, it started with a 911 call, about 10:30 last night in woodlawn. police say the officer was giving cpr to the teen on starbrook road. moments before the officer found his front door damaged.

and four teens running from the scene. during a physical altercation, the teen fell unconscious. he was pronounced dead. that teenager is identified as chris brown. he attended randallstown high school. police say no weapons were found at the location. brown's grieving mother describes him as an upstanding student and says she has serious questions about the officer's conduct. you'll hear from her tonight at 5:00 and 6:00, mary. >> all right, pat. thank you. police have not yet identified that off-duty baltimore county officer. he is on routine administrative leave while this is investigated. also, tense moments. officers responded to a domestic incident near dogwood road. the suspect inside refused to come out of the house. roads in the area were shut down as a precaution. police believe the man was armed. the suspect was taken into custed ony-- custody just after 3:00 today. charges are pending. well, two more witnesses take the stand again today, accusing jerry sandusky of sexual abuse. manuel gallegus reports for

wjz, the prosecution is winding down its case. >> reporter: a soft-spoken accuser, known as victim number 6, told the jury jerry sandusky took a shower with him at penn state, when he was lever years old. he said sandusky called him the tickle monster and embraced him chest to chest while they showered. he said he remembered seeing his chest hair, thinking it was icky. he said sandusky lichtded -- lifted him to help clear the soap. he said that's the last thing i remember, it's kind of black after that. the witness who met sandusky through his charity of at risk kids, said he has no memory of sandusky touching his private parts. after complaints, an investigator said he heard the boy tell his mother, he wished he was dead. but there was no charges filed. >> there was an opportunity, a missed opportunity in 1998, and an opportunity that wasn't just missed by one person, it was

missed by multiple people. >> reporter: during cross- examination, the defense questioned why the accuser stayed friends with sandusky and his wife, until last year. >> reporter: victim number 6 admitted going to the sandusky home on football days, borrowing their car, and sending friendly text messages to the former assistant coach. another witness, known as victim 3, describes sleepovers at sandusky's house when he was a boy. he testified sandusky touched his genitals while he was in bed and that he related -- rolled over to prevent anything more from happening. victim number 3 also said he loved sandusky and considered him a father figure. >> sandusky is charged with 52 criminal counts. he admits no wrongdoing and could take the stand next week in his own defense. an update on the three- alarm fire that destroyed a warehouse in fells point earlier this week. city fire investigators say the building suffered half a million dollars in structural damage.

an estimated $1 million worth of items were also destroyed. flames broke out monday afternoon in the 500 block of south broadway. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. well, let's check in on our roads right now, with kristy breslin, at wjz traffic control. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. we have a couple of delays on the beltway. on the north side inner loop, traffic delays there. the top side, delays extend from greenspring avenue to the jfx. it should only take you about 10 minutes to get through. and on the west side inner loop, stop and go there from baltimore national pike to 70. also in the outer loop, in that direction, traffic gets heavy from liberty to edmondson avenue. northbound, brake lights there. 32 past route 100. and accidents include old harford road. also because of the star- spangled sailabration in baltimore city. you can expect extra heavy congestion. and closed between andre avenue and fort mchenry. the only other traffic allowed

flags fly, and people just feeling a sense of what it means to be an american. for one group of people, this was an extraordinary day. it was a day for naturalized citizens. these new citizens celebrated on a national holiday. >> reporter: these are the words to a new life in america. more than 40 imdpranlts became -- immigrants became u.s. citizens today at the maryland historical society. >> you can imagine, this process has been going on for generations. and it's absolutely amazing. coming to this country and being welcomed. >> reporter: margaret amery hall is from trinidad. she started this process 15 years ago. she had a green card then. but now this certificate makes her citizenship permanent and official. >> come to america. make up your mind what you want to do here and get it done. >> reporter: now, tonight, she'll celebrate with friends and a big plate of curry

chicken. >> i'm going to invite her to lunch. and we'll sit and talk, you know? >> reporter: the maryland historical society says the ceremony is sitting at the museum, which charts history. >> first immigrants came here in 1634 and were, of course, native americans already here. but that started this whole chain, this whole process. >> reporter: more than 31 countries were represented today. and the maryland historical society says this was the first time that it hosted a naturalization ceremony. but probably won't be the last. in baltimore, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> and of course, the maryland historical society says it will be extra special for all of these people, because they will mark their citizenship on flag day. and if you don't know a lot about the war of 1812, and you think, all i know is it's a bunch of tall ships, don't worry about it, can you get an education while you're here.

[ stock bells ringing ] late news of more help for troubled european banks put investors in a buying mood. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow soars up 155 points. the s&p and the nasdaq are also up. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> one-time texas tycoon alan stanford has been sentenced to prison. 62-year-old stanford will spend the rest of his life in prison for bilking investors out of more than $7 billion over 20 years. at his sentencing, stanford told the judge he did not

defraud anybody. foreclosures are on the rise. banks took back more homes in may than april. and that number is expected to increase. realty track says the number of homes facing foreclosure jumped 12% last month. that means more homes could hit the market and drag prices down. the number of people applying for unemployment rose last week. spain's borrowing costs have hit a record high, after a credit ratings agency downgraded the country's ability to pay down the debt. and expanding into gas tank fires. the national highway traffic safety administration says some jeep cherokee and liberty suvs have been added to the probe that covers more than 5 million vehicles. that's your money watch. for more, go to cbs money watch -- cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis

♪[ music ] and welcome back to wjz's live coverage of the star spangled sailabration. in the inner harbor and throughout baltimore's port. and i am denise koch. and i'm with tim williams. and this sailabration is going to include fireworks, it's going to include music. there's a lot of food around here, let me tell you that. obviously the ships that you can tour for free as you were saying. >> that's right. >> it's really a wonderful event. you should try to come down in the next week. >> that's right. and the weather has played a pretty nice role so far. ships came in with a nice breeze. the blue angels have been practicing all afternoon. so the weather is really just a

perfect background for all of this. and for more on how it's going to play out for the rest of the weekend, we send it in to bob turk. take it away, bob. >> it is a beautiful afternoon. and it will continue well into the weekend and beyond for father's day. take a look at temps now. up to 80 degrees. that's the highest i've seen. the dew point is up a little bit. humidity at 47%. east winds at 7. occasionally, we've seen gusts at 30. 77, elkton and easton, patuxent. 78 in hagerstown. ocean city with the winds off the water there. only 70. 81 in washington. 81 in bel air. and 79 in westminster. so very comfortable temperatures. normal high today is right around 81, 82 degrees. so we're just about where we're supposed to be this time of year. winds are generally out of the east. and they have brought clouds in around the ocean. probably saw those this morning and this afternoon from time to time. the clouds are rolling if. we'll show you that in just a second.

here in the east, not a whole lot going on, to tell you the truth. most of the activity offshore. but there's high pressure over eastern new england. because of that, the flow out of the east/northeast. it continues gentlemanly dry. -- generally dry. but from time to time, some of these clouds begin to roll in off the atlantic ocean. to the north, all of that activity, some severe weather. that will not affect our region. but you can see just some clouds offshore. and a few roll into the area this afternoon. a little better shot of that closer look. this is the satellite, literally like taking a camera and shooting down its face. city north and west. mostly clear skies. you can see the clouds over delaware and particularly over virginia. watch how they roll in from the north and northeast. all of it is just like popcorn. so from time to time, there may be clouds. and then sun. clouds and sun. i think tomorrow will have a lot more sun than we saw today. looks like that gradient will kind of weaken just a little bit. we have pleasant weather on tap for friday and saturday and sunday. and even monday. by the middle of next week,

here. as you can hear behind me, music is going on. there is lots of food for sale. and there will be fireworks later. and of course, you can take a tour aboard one of the ships. and blue angels have been pragging in the -- practicing in the skies all afternoon. it has been unbelievable to watch them do their maneuvers at what seems like a dangerously close height. they have been the stars today as they have attracted attention. as soon as they zoom over top of us. now, jessica kartalija has been very lucky, she'll been here all day long. and she has been watching the festivities. we hear a lot of that down here, too. boat whistles go off. cannons go off. you can hear it, too, jessica. because i can see you right over there. anyway, she was lucky enough to be on board some of these vessels. and she's been talking to people as they have been enjoying all that the star-

spangled sailabration has to offer us. i can talk now. go, jessica. >> reporter: okay, denise. thank you. yesterday, we were actually on one of the boats on the mexican naval board when they fired a cannon. and it scared me to death. but it was so much fun. such an incredible opportunity, a chance to get up close and personal with the crewmembers and walk around the ship and ask any question you want. it's just been a blast. take a look. >> reporter: one by one, tall ships from around the world sail into baltimore's inner harbor. brazil arrived. and so do the crowds. [ inaudible ] so cordial. so friendly. everyone that we met in the harbor. i would recommend everyone come here. >> reporter: thousands are expected to tour the 40 ships docked throughout the harbor. >> having a blast. >> i like seeing the ships and

seeing how they could dock and like driving it. that's awesome. >> just seeing all of the people coming together, as one community, enjoying day, and enjoying the anniversary. it's just a wonderful thing. >> reporter: the sailabration is drawing national and international attention. we've seen several people speaking in native tongues, excited to see the ship from their home country. >> i feel right at home. speaking portuguese with my family. i feel right at home. >> reporter: it's all to commemorate the bicentennial of the war of 1812. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: it's incredible just how much pride there is down here, with all of the people from baltimore coming in from around the country, and of course, all of the ships, all the naval officers coming in from around the world. everyone is so proud to share in this experience. denise, i'm going to send it back to you on the other side of the harbor. >> all right. thank you, jessica.

and of course, it bears noting that we're not the only city celebrating the bicentennial of the wash of 1812. it's also helping in norfolk, virginia, and new orleans. all of the various ports that figured into the battle that kept this country independent from the british for the second time. just 40 years after our first revolutionary war n. any case, the best place i would imagine to really get a sense of how large the scope of this festival,of this sailabration, would be from the air. and that's where jeff long has been, yesterday and today. and i imagine it's getting to look very, very busy from up there now. jeff? >> reporter: it is. this time of day, it's getting really busy. it is a beautiful day. it's going to be a beautiful weekend. wanted to point out, right here at the end of pier 5, one of the most recognizable tall ships here. this is the u.s. coast guard cutter eagle, which is used by the coast guard academy for training cadets. and tied to just the other side is the gloria, which is the

official flagship and sail training ship for the columbian navy, home ported out of cart hennia. over 257 feet long. four masts, 27 sails. beautiful ship. and you can see all of the people down there, along the dock, visiting the ship. and all of the other beautiful ships that are down here at the inner harbor. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. back to you. >> spent two years planning this sailabration, which as i say, ultimately becomes national. and if you look over my right shoulder there, the coast guard has two tall ships, only two, and one of them is here. and that's the uss eagle. if you come down, i would make your way down there by the aquarium and take a look at it. now, as we have been saying yesterday and today, and hopefully we'll keep saying throughout the week, the weather couldn't be more spectacular for something like this. tim williams is here. he's ready to take the credit. but bob turk is here. >> i'll take all of the credit. we had a few dark clouds out here for about two seconds.

afternoon, charges are formally filed against 11 members of the famous florida a&m band, accused in the death of a band member. mary is live in the newsroom with the latest on this high- profile case. >> prosecutors say 26-year-old robert champion died from hazing at the hand of fellow band members. it happened on a bus following a football game in orlando, back in november. police say champion was forced to run a gauntlet, while other band members beat him with fists in objects. a judge set an october trial date. champion's death exposed a wide culture of hazing in the school, widely spread among the marching band. >> the band has been suspended for the time being. the spotlight in the race for the white house is in ohio. and today's campaign 2012 report, both prawrm and president obama and republican challenger mitt romney are concentrating on that battleground state. danielle nottingham reports with more. >> reporter: president obama

it is a delightful mid-june afternoon. perfect for the star stangled sailabration downtown, as many as a milliop -- million people can be coming to baltimore this weekend. complete coverage continues in just minutes. the man suspected of killing three people at an off campus apartment, near auburn university, appears in court for the first time. 22-year-old desmonty leonard faces two counts of assault. he hasn't entered a plea just yet. he was the center of a manhunt in alabama earlier this month. a doctor is wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at a hospital in western new york. pat warren has more on the growing search investigation. >> reporter: law enforcement

agencies around the country and parts of canada are on the lookout for timothy jordan. a surgeon and military weapons officer, they say shot and killed 34-year-old jacqueline winewski yesterday. her body was found in a stairwell at a medical center where they both worked. police locked down the hospital but jordan was already gone. police say they're confident jordan hasn't crossed the border into canada. but they can't say where he may be headed. >> police warn that jordan could be armed and should be considered dangerous. a dramatic rescue is caught on tape in chicago. somehow a man slipped into the water. and you can see a kayaker holding the man above water until rescue crews arrive. afterfinally being pulled from the water, he was given cpr and taken to a nearby hospital, he is in critical condition. two children are found bound and blindfolded in a parking lot. police found a 5-year-old boy

with his hands tied and a blindfold over his eyes. the 7-year-old girl who was also bound and blindfolded was inside the vehicle, along with three other children, ages 12, 13 and 15. police say the presume parents of the children have been arrested on suspicions of child abuse and endangerment. there's no end in sight for a giant wildfire that has been burning for nearly a week. officials are telling another 1,000 residents to be ready to evacuate in a moment. >> this is the third largest in colorado history. despite the efforts of more than 1,000 personnel, in the air and on the ground. hundreds of residents remain forced from their homes. >> we're still working out the details. but our team is working to lift evacuations to get residents back into their homes where it is safe to do so. >> reporter: some say they're frustrated, with a lack of information from fire officials. >> they couldn't tell me my address. if the house, my place where my

whole life is right now, was gone or not. >> reporter: colorado has long been concerned about fires like these. for at least five years, the state has been battling a pine beetle infestation that is killing off trees, leaving them dry as kindling. officials confirmed, the fires were started by a lightning strike. a single moment resulting in at least one death, the loss of dozens of homes. and tens of thousands of acres of devastation. >> and so far, the so-called high park fire is only 10% contained. a bare bone bones rescue in washington state, where a man gets rescued on an island without a stitch of clothing. some kind of man made obstacle sat tumbling inside the water. he stripped off his clothes to try to warm up, until some nearby construction workers heard his screams for help. olympic gymnast dominique mosenle is revealing dark secrets about her gold medal

higher than it's been. still dry. 47% humidity. east winds at 7. the breeze from time to time, up to 15 to 18 miles per hour. nice breeze. barometer holding steady. 30.15 inches. 77 in elkton. and the cool spot, oakland at 68. ocean city, only at 70, with winds coming in right off the atlantic ocean. around the area, upper 70s, to around 80 degrees. so far, that's about the warmest i've seen. and tomorrow, and into the weekend, exactly the same kind of weather. really, really pleasant conditions. here's that east wind right now. it did bring in clouds this afternoon. from the atlantic ocean. just ocean clouds kind of rolling in. and they're rolling down to the south and southwest. a few more clouds in virginia. to the northwest of us, thunderstorms and-- storms and thunderstorms. not going to bother us. there's a lot more warmer air building to the west. it's going to take a while to get here. but i think by next wednesday, thursday, and friday, may be back up close to 90 degrees.
