carroll county crashes. a small plane breaks into pieces. the latest on the pilot and how it happened. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. kai is off today. here's what everybody is talking about. a small plane crashes landing at an airport, killing a pilot. it happened in westminster. wjz is live with complete coverage. captain jeff long is live above the crash scene in sky eye chopper 13. let's go first, though, to alex demetrick on the ground, with the latest on -- latest. >> reporter: lmary, the pilot was the only one on board. it went down about 10:30 this morning. and when it did, it took his life. >> reporter: the accident happened at the end of the runway at carroll county airport. the wreckage just off to the

side. at the time of the crash, weather was clear, winds light. but that leaves a lot of other possible causes. according to state police... >> apparently the pilot was experiencing mechanical troubles before the crash. so at this point, our crash team investigators are out there, working with ntsb. >> not long after first responders rushed to the airport, the pilot was freed. identified only as a 64-year- old man from rocksville, state police say he died on the way to the hospital. his plane was a 2009 remo gx aviator 2 sports aircraft. that's larger than the ultralight kit planes seen here, but substantially smaller than midlevel aircraft. according to those who fly, size makes a difference. >> to become a full, certified pilot, that has to be medically approved and everything, you move into the middle level. but the lower level is lsa. you or i or anybody can fly that. >> reporter: the skill level of

the pilot in this crash is unknown. but will likely be one part of the ntsb investigation. >> reporter: and those investigators will continue their work at the crash scene through tomorrow. mary? >> alex, our live coverage continues with captain jeff long. >> thanks, mary. not much has changed here in carroll county. we're looking at the wreckage, pretty much exactly what it was earlier today. and we were able to locate at the end of the runway, or the approach end of runway 16, a pretty sizable divet in the ground. so it appears as though the airplane almost made it to the runway, struck the ground here, and ended up where you saw it. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. >> all right, captain jeff. thank you. wjz is following the investigation. we'll have much more today at 5:00 and 6:00. well, george huguely's attorney wants a change of venue for the wrongful death lawsuit against his client.

huguely was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of cockeysville native, yeardley love. love's family is asking for $30 million in the civil suit. it's set to be heard in charlottesville, virginia. ♪ly's legal team says a change of venue is necessary because of all of the bad publicity. huguely is scheduled to be sentenced in august. a pennsylvania man accused of secretly recording people in a public rest stop, in maryland is going to trial. a federal grand jury has indicted 28-year-old brian williams in pennsylvania. he's charged with producing and possessing child pornography. it alleges williams used his cell phone camera to tape two young men at a public bus rest stop. he faces two years in prison if convicted. a big change in immigration policy. today, the white house says it will stop deporting young immigrants who come to the u.s. as children. the children must also have a

clean criminal record. >> reporter: students in los angeles are calling the new immigration policy a step in the right direction. >> i'm so happy. i just want to jump up and down and celebrate. >> reporter: president obama announced that the department of homeland security will stop deporting illegal immigrants under age 30, who were brought to the united states as children and have since led productive, law-abiding lives. >> it makes no sense to expel talented people, who for all intents and purposes, are americans. >> reporter: this includes 800,000 people. including 23-year-old ricardo munoz. they can now apply for work permits in the u.s. legally. >> what was it like facing deportation? >> it's really scary. sometimes you go to sleep -- sometimes you can't even go to sleep. you're thinking that i.c.e. is going to come in and knock your door down and take you.

>> reporter: students here are celebrating a change. but they're still pushing for more reform. >> reporter: legislation, called the dream act, included that path to citizenship. but it never made it to congress. >> send me the dream act, put it on my desk, and i will sign it right away. >> reporter: republicans are already criticizing the white house for going around congress and call this a short-term answer to a long-term problem. the president is rolling out the new policy in an election year. and it's expected to play well with latino voters in key swing states. in los angeles, bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> illegal immigrants are not to be deported if they are under 16, have been in the u.s. for five years, are in school or have graduated. sex, lies and the secret service. new allegations rocking that agency. monique griego has the just- released information from the government. >> reporter: the new

information was released today under the freedom of information act. and the allegations are serious. they involve prostitutes, leaking sensitive information, publishing pornography and illegal wire taps. the list describes accusations filed against secret service employees. it is heavily censured but has claims as recent as last month. and information comes in the wake of the south american prostitution scandal, involving agents that were working prearrival security for the president. mary, back to you. >> a dozen agents and supervisors were implicated in the columbian scandal. eight have been forced out of the agency. well, festivities continue at the inner harbor, as maryland celebrates the bicentennial of the war of 1812. there are so many ways to enjoy the star-spangled sailabration. wjz bring you you live complete coverage from the inner harbor. how was your day today,

jessica? >> mary, it just keeps getting better and better. the weather has been absolutely beautiful. we have light winds out here. and people were just walking around and taking it all in and enjoying it. it isn't just about the tall ships we have been telling you about for the past two days, but also a lot of history being talked about here. >> reporter: day 2 of the star- spangled sailabration, kicks off with a bang. the international parade of more than 40 tall ships and naval vessels has put baltimore's inner harbor in the national spotlight. >> i think it's nice the way it brings everyone together like it does. >> i'm really proud to see that the -- auto star spangled banner flying. i've taken lots of pictures of that today. >> reporter: commemorating the war of the 1812 and the writing of the star spangled banner. this sailabration is a free, fun, and educational is best. >> i never knew what ramparts was. and it's actually the walls around the fort. >> reporter: you learn something new every day.

together. we'll talk to kristy in a second. but first, here is bob with the updated numbers from first warning weather. hey, bob. >> it's been a spectacular week. comfortable, cool, nice. nice for the most part. sunny and pleasantly mild afternoon. take a look at temperatures around the state now. we are at 80. that's the highest i've seen all day. 72, oakland and ocean city as well. the dew points in mid-50s, still very dry air. it's going to be with us all weekend long. in fact, look at this graphic, all through the weekend. including, yes, father's day. cool mornings, nice, pleasant warm afternoons. that will be with us really into early next week. then we'll start seeing a bit of a warmup. and the humidity will start coming back by maybe tuesday and wednesday. it will feel more like, well, like summer should. mary? >> all right, bob. thank you. let's check in on our roads here. here's kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. the good news is, it's friday. bad news is, tons of traffic out there. northbound 95. we do have an accident there. past the harbor tunnel

it is 80 degrees in sunny in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a florida woman is facing child abuse charges after police release this disturbing nanny cam video. it shows 47-year-old dawn richards, attempting to feed an infant a bottle. then you see her slap the baby boy with an open hand before tossing him down on a pillow. richards was arrested after the

parents of the infant contacted police. the parents hired her through an online babysitting website. the jet blue pilot who suffered a midair meltdown in march will stand trial. a federal judge ruled today that clayton osbun is mentally competent. this after osbun underwent a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. during the flight, he left the cockpit and started screaming about jesus and al qaeda. the plane was forced to make an emergency landing. if convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. tonight, nik wallenda is attempting to cross niagara falls on a high wire. nik wallenda's plans to walk into the history books. >> reporter: world famous daredevil nik wallenda is about to attempt a feat no one has ever accomplished. >> it's kind of down to the

wire, no pun intended. >> he will be 200 feet over the churning waters over the niagara gorge. >> what will be the most important point for you? >> two points. the moment i step on the cable and the moment i step off the cable. >> his family has been performing stunts for 200 years. his great grandfather fell to his death during a stunt. our cameras captured them rewiring the harness. >> reporter: wallenda said he doesn't want to use a harness, but promises he won't ditch the device, unless it interferes with his balance, as he crosses niagara falls. >> do you think wearing the harness will detract from the event? >> no. no. it's very risky. it's still one tremendous daredevil activity, tethered or not. >> reporter: an estimated

120,000 spectators will be watching wallenda's wallenda's thrilling, high-wire walk. wallenda will wear a special pair of moccasins his mother made. and a wet suit. and he will walk into the history books. >> wall enda's -- wallenda's inner harbor walk was in tribute to his grandfather, who performed nearly the same stunt decades ago. we wish him luck. a solid end to what has been mostly a positive week on wall street. the results could hold the key to the future of the euro zone and determine whether or not greece continues to use europe's common currency. investors brushed off new reports. consumer sentiment is at its lowest level in six months. that's offsetting cheaper gas prices. and the nation's factories produce less in may than april, a sign manufacturing is slowing down. a former goldman sachs director has been found guilty of insider trading. 63-year-old rejat guptda was convicted of three counts of security fraud, for giving confidential information to a hedge fund manager. he faces more than 60 years in prison. he becomes the most prominent defendant convicted so far in a wide investigation of insider trading. for more, go to cbs money watch.com. with the fourth of july holiday just a few weeks away,

mchenry. he joins us now with more on that one. bob, it has already been a spectacular week for us. we've had the tall ships come in. we've had the blue angels fly in this weekend. and then we have you on monday. what can we expect? >> well, i'm not as good as the blue angels. they're a lot more fun than i am. but this is going to be a wonderful show. i mean, i was there at the bicentennial celebration. i was a white house correspondent in those days, when president ford was president. and he came up for the bicentennial up there and to see that big flag unfurled at fort mchenry, and to see the fireworks, it was just breathtaking. so i'm really looking forward to coming back and being part of this. there willab -- will be a lot of bands and flags. and just all the good stuff that we enjoy. i'm really looking forward to it. >> i was going ask you, for many people, the war of 1812

was historically called the forgotten war. did you have to brush up for history? or since you were at the bicentennial celebrations, were you aware of what went on? >> well, i covered the war. i covered the pentagon in those days. [ laughter ] no. i think all of us, and i think that's absolutely right. a lot of us don't appreciate and remember the war of 1812. but it was quite important. so -- butt thing is, this is learning about history. and learning about it in a fun way. to get to see the big ships and to see all of these things that take place. if you didn't learn a thing, if you knew everything about it, it would still be fun to come to this event. >> absolutely. and we hold it close to our hearts in baltimore because it brought us the spangled banner and certainly made a landmark of fort mchenry, which you will enjoy monday. and we will meet you there and

but really, all in all, it's been just spectacular for the last three or four days. showers and storms. they will not really affect us. however, this front is going to pass to our north. ahead of it, we'll start getting slightly warmer air. and additional humidity coming in. tuesday you'll probably feel it, wednesday and thursday next week for sure. we'll probably get close to 90. clouds across georgia tonight. here in the east, high pressure pretty much over new england again. continues to bring us very, very lovely weather, with a general flow coming from the eastern canada. continues to be quite dry. a lot of sunshine. cool nights. upper 50s to low 60s. can't beat it. there's the front out to the west. shower activity present all weekend. sunday into monday as well. by early next week. more humidity. maybe a few scattered showers out in the ohio valley. but we should stay dry, probably through wednesday or thursday next week. but temperatures will get back up probably to 90 on wednesday. we haven't seen that for a few days. northeast winds on the bay.

jumped a river, triggering a new round of evacuations. residents of the glacier view area, were given just 20 minutes to get out. >> those helicopters that are right there, those are flying over my house, right now. >> reporter: officials know their work is far from over. >> our plan is to be patient and work with this fire in a phase situation, as it moves on its terms, which it's going to, and we'll keep up with it. and that may mean we're doing this for days. >> reporter: some evacuees are finally getting word, whether their canyon homes were burned or spared. >> what did you learn? >> we just found out, our house is still standing there, and so is our neighbor's. >> reporter: she managed to get her neighbors on the phone to give them the good news. >> i'm not kidding. we're still there, honestly. we're still there. >> reporter: but cherie says she knows the shifting winds means her home is still in danger, for weeks and possibly months to come. >> now, yesterday, president obama signed off on

legislation, adding seven large tanker planes to the arsenal. the nationwide search appears to be over tonight. mary joins us now from the newsroom. mary? >> reporter: a body found in thick brush in western new york, is believed to be that of dr. timothy jordan. the 49-year-old has not been seen since wednesday morning. when police say he killed 33- year-old jacqueline wisnuski in buffalo. the body was found not far from jordan's home. and the person died of a self- inflicted gunshot wound. police say jordan and wisnuski recently broke up and friends say he had been stalking her. vic? >> jordan's colleagues say he had been act approximating differently in recent months. a rare violent crime rocks the canadian city of alberta. three armed guards are dead. and one is in critical condition after a campus, after an apparent rob of an armed truck.

the university of alberta was locked down, but no students were involved. a 19-year-old glen burnie man is convicted of first- degree murder for his role in a deadly shooting at a pizza shop. police say sean johnson was one of four men who held up this pizza shop in november 2010. during the robbery, an innocent bystander was shot to death. johnson will be sentenced next month and could get life behind bars. >> reporter: the young boy who became an internet star, portraying little darth vader in a car commercial is recovering from heart surgery today. monique griego is following the story. >> reporter: max paige underwent successful heart surgery to replace a heart involve. -- valve. his portrayal made him a star. it's the 8th surgery for max, who was diagnosed with a heart defect when he was just 8 months old. he's expected to be released in five days. and although max has starred and commercial and tv shows, his real passion is baseball. and doctors say the new heart

valve will help restore his energy level. vic, back to you. >> let's hope he gets back on the field. max has a recurring role on "the young and the restless," which you can see here on wjz. right now, tens of thousands of people are here at the inner harbor for the star spangled sailabration. one of the big attractions is going to be, of course, the blue angels. and wjz caught the daredevils doing practice over baltimore. we just want to let you know that all of the passes for the blue angels shows tomorrow and sunday, have now been distributed. amid all of the fest festivities, some of the military are helping in baltimore neighborhoods. and complete coverage continues with mike schuh, from fells point. >> away from all of the festivities, far from the crowds. military visitors to our city are helping our city. >> we have over 700 sailors and marines that are doing community relations projects that we've worked hard over the

self-confessed mass killer, anders breivik, deeming him mentally insane. anders breivik is charged with killing 77 people during two terror attacks last year. he's been on trial since late april. the last remaining member of the japanese cult for the gas attack is under rest. arrest. total of 12 people. 13 people were killed. and dozens of others. today, many suffer from vision problems. a texas man faces up to life in prison for killing his neighbor. as pooja lodhia reports, loud music apparently started a deadly chain of events. >> we the jury, find the defendant raul rodriguez guilty of -- >> ordered in the court. no outbursts, please. >> raul rodriguez shows little emotion as he's found guilty of

murder. meanwhile, the victim's friends and family struggle to stay seated. his widow tears up, reaching out for comfort. >> i'm just glad that he can't hurt anybody else. >> reporter: raul rodriguez shot and killed elementary schoolteacher kelly dannaher in may 2010. he claims self-defense. rodriguez's home video of the shooting details what happened that night. you can see him approaching the dannaher home, with the gun, angry about loud music. >> i said, stop right now, or i will shoot you. stop! get back! >> reporter: the defense blamed dannaher's friend, ricky johnson, for provoking rodriguez. johnson said he doesn't remember what happened. but it's his laugh you hear in the video, right before shots are fired. >> this has tore me up since -- for two years. and hopefully now i can begin to heal from it. because i have held a lot of guilt. >> reporter: and as rodriguez

is led into custody, leaving his family members to grieve over the guilty verdict, kelly dannaher's friends and family, remember an outgoing, funny person, now gone. >> but we still lost a piece of us, a piece that will not come back. >> i love my husband. and i miss him so much. and i just -- i just know that he's up there. and he helped all of us get through this today. >> reporter: rodriguez's sentencing is scheduled for next week. a tragic infant death ends in georgia. a father is facing murder and child cruelty charges for giving the baby alcohol. prosecutors say the girl died after the father mixed baby formula with vodka and gave it to the 4-month-old. paramedics rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. the father is currently awaiting a bond hearing. mare sein the newsroom with more on how a violent fight got started. >> the brawl was between several mothers. and of course, it was caught all on tape.

kids are heard -- kids are heard screaming in the background as the mother starts throwing punches. the fight reportedly started over a cap and gown that all 45 preschooler his to share. witnesses say it was a fight over a man. the school did send home a letter, informing parents about the fight. >> los angeles police -- school police are investigating this incident. >> a man being chailingsed by police in reno, nevada, thought he found the perfect hiding place, but it ended up costing him his life. investigators say the 37-year- old was crushed to death inside a trash compactor at an apartment complex. he slid down the trash chute from one of the floors of the complex. and somehow activated the compactor. police say the man was wanted on an undisclosed warrant. father's day will be special for one father. he gave the son the gift of life. thanksthanks to a new surgical

technique, the process was quicker and less painful. adam bra zizi and his wife are happy that the family is healing. they found out little charlie may have liver disease. he didn't hesitate when he found out he could would be the perfect test donor. >> i was like, let's do it tomorrow. you can do it without anesthesia. let's go to work. >> reporter: but it would have meant months of recovery, taking away time from work and helping his wife care for charlie. >> but now there's a new transplant procedure that cuts recovery time in half for donors. >> reporter: adam's surgery was done laparoscopically. instead of a major incision, surgeons made just five small ones. >> most of our donors who have undergone laparascopic, have been able to go back to work in

three to four weeks. they're off of pain medication, usually in 7 to 10 days. >> reporter: more than three months later, charlie is doing well. he's on drugs that suppress his immune system so his body doesn't reject his liver. now, his parents worried about keeping germs away. >> he's not allowed to play with his cousins. not allowed to have a lot of visitors really. we wash everything over and over again. >> reporter: but this father's day, the bra zizi family will be celebrating. and adam is counting his blessings. >> just grateful that i get to be dad too and james has his brother. >> reporter: doctors say if all goes well, charlie will grow up to be healthy. >> doctors vay right now, the surgery is available only between adult donors and child recipients. but they hope to expand to include older recipients next year. a california man is back on solid ground, after a whale nearly sinks his ship. the man sent out a signal after

days. >> so pleasant and comfortable and dry. and sunshiny in the afternoon. cool nights. going to continue all weekend. into early next week before it even begins to warm up. take a look at temps now. we're at 80 degrees. dew points in the mid-50s. humidity, 42%. east/northeast winds. 10 the barometer. still on the way back up. 30.26 inches. 72, ocean city. and in oakland. both sides of the state there. 79, up in cumberland. and 80 in elkton, d.c., and baltimore. locally, upper 70s to low 80s as you can see. these are just about normal temperatures. normal high for the airport is 82 degrees. so we're currently at 80. east winds, east/northeast winds. looks like they'll continue for the next couple of days. and from time to time, a few of those ocean clouds roll in. that's what we're seeing the last couple of days. and tomorrow, kind of the same thing. going to keep us on the dry side and pleasant temperature- wise. at night, with skies clearing out for the most part.

temperatures once again, upper 50s in suburban areas to the low 60s in the urban areas. take a look at satellite. lots of clear skies during the morning hours. and during the an, kind of seeing showers beginning to move in from the north. spotty stuff. and you see it. beautiful picture there. really nice, visible picture. eastern shore. right now, very, very sunny, around the baltimore region. you can see, just a few, patchy clouds. call that patchy clouds. to the west, a lot of thunderstorm activity, from iowa into northern texas. iowa saw some stuff. this is all moving to the northeast. really not going to impact us all that much. but ahead of it, there will be warmer and more humid air that will finally reach our area, probably tuesday, wednesday, and thursday of next week. until then, this high pressure across new england continues to dominate our weather picture. so it doesn't look like much is going to change. more pleasant temperatures. pleasant, cool, pleasant. nice and sunny. most part of the afternoons. by early next week. a little more humidity coming
