this is wjz-tv, wjz-hd and wjz.com, baltimore. from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now is complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> landing. a pilot dies when his plane smashes into pieces near the airport. >> just minutes before. the investigation on what may have caused the crash. >> hello, i'm denise koch. >> i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> an experienced pilot is killed when his plane crashes near the runway in carroll county regional airport in westminster. meghan mccorkell has a closer look at what may have gone wrong on the plane. meghan? >> reporter: the plane may have had mechanical issues moments before it went down and we are learning more about the pilot who lost his life.

pieces of the shattered plane near the carroll county regional airport. the pilot, 64 year old henry thomas judd was having technical problems. >> apparently he was experiencing mechanical issues before. >> reporter: the skilled pilot trying to land a single engine sport plane. >> the airplane almost made it to the runway, struck the ground here and ended up where you saw it. >> reporter: still, he was one of the first on the scene. >> we saw the pilot laying in the grassy field near the runway. >> ejected from the plane. the helicopter had an issue. >> reporter: paramedics took him to another chopper but he died on the way to shock trauma. they'll be here to investigate

this weekend. henry jenkins, known as tom, was a qualified pilot who served in the airport. he was a glider and power pilot. also trained to be an airplane and power mechanic, now the family is mourning a wonderful husband and friend. investigators are on their way to town to begin their investigation tomorrow morning. reporting live, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, thank you, meghan. jenkins was also heavily involved in the mid atlantic soaring administration, at one point the group's president. the mother's boy friend confessed to killing her in a home on north stricker street. at the time was told she suffered a seizure.

thomas faces second-degree murder charges. wjz mike hellgren investigates what happened in a quiet randallstown neighborhood. >> reporter: what happened during chris's final moments alive with james laboard? it's a question at the heart it. >> christopher is gone now. we have no answers. >> reporter: he had spoken to both the police chief and the state's attorney saying i am deeply saddened by the events. the ongoing investigation will shed light on what transpired that night. all the facts will be evaluated objectively. they will also call the pastor.
