this is wjz-tv, wjz-hd and wjz.com, baltimore. from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now is complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> landing. a pilot dies when his plane smashes into pieces near the airport. >> just minutes before. the investigation on what may have caused the crash. >> hello, i'm denise koch. >> i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> an experienced pilot is killed when his plane crashes near the runway in carroll county regional airport in westminster. meghan mccorkell has a closer look at what may have gone wrong on the plane. meghan? >> reporter: the plane may have had mechanical issues moments before it went down and we are learning more about the pilot who lost his life.

pieces of the shattered plane near the carroll county regional airport. the pilot, 64 year old henry thomas judd was having technical problems. >> apparently he was experiencing mechanical issues before. >> reporter: the skilled pilot trying to land a single engine sport plane. >> the airplane almost made it to the runway, struck the ground here and ended up where you saw it. >> reporter: still, he was one of the first on the scene. >> we saw the pilot laying in the grassy field near the runway. >> ejected from the plane. the helicopter had an issue. >> reporter: paramedics took him to another chopper but he died on the way to shock trauma. they'll be here to investigate

this weekend. henry jenkins, known as tom, was a qualified pilot who served in the airport. he was a glider and power pilot. also trained to be an airplane and power mechanic, now the family is mourning a wonderful husband and friend. investigators are on their way to town to begin their investigation tomorrow morning. reporting live, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, thank you, meghan. jenkins was also heavily involved in the mid atlantic soaring administration, at one point the group's president. the mother's boy friend confessed to killing her in a home on north stricker street. at the time was told she suffered a seizure.

thomas faces second-degree murder charges. wjz mike hellgren investigates what happened in a quiet randallstown neighborhood. >> reporter: what happened during chris's final moments alive with james laboard? it's a question at the heart it. >> christopher is gone now. we have no answers. >> reporter: he had spoken to both the police chief and the state's attorney saying i am deeply saddened by the events. the ongoing investigation will shed light on what transpired that night. all the facts will be evaluated objectively. they will also call the pastor.

68 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning forecast is coming up. situation in colorado wildfires is not improved much. the third largest wildfire many state history. at least one person has died and hundreds others evacuated from homes. firefighters think the blaze was sparked by a fire spike. a teacher faces child abuse charges for allegedly holding a knife. she asked for help after she hurt her knee and then held a knife against the girl's knee, threatening to cut it off. she was released on bond yesterday. the girl fighting flesh eating bacteria, amy copeland, is now refusing pain

medication. she has lost her left leg, hands, and updated to serious condition. copeland is studying holistic pain medication and would be traitor if she used drugs. the defense claims sandusky suffers from a personality disorder to act in an overly seductive manner. he must make himself available to prosecutors. sex abuse against ten boys and convicted to life in prison. >> is there an operator for idiocy? if so, one man in connecticut needs the number. went and asked for a sandwich with less meat and more cheese.

67 in westminster. east wind. most places under 10 or 5 miles per hour. that's how temperatures get down into the upper 50s again and those 60s, just very comfortable conditions. here in the east, not much going on. niagara falls, clear as a bell right now. to the north, that's kind of a borderline showers rotating to the north of us. it might affect us. in the meantime, beautiful weather all weekend long but there is a warming trend coming and some additional humidity after the southwest. better get here on tuesday or wednesday of next week. until then, pleasant conditions. just about normal, pleasant night and beautiful steady

playing in hotlanta this morning. the o's open that series in atlanta. this is the continuation of interleague play taking on national league teams which means managers have to be creative when they can't use the designated hitter. they put chris in out field. he's never played that. so you know they're going to hit it that way. not bad for a guy who never played in the big league. everything seems to be going the o's way in the winning streak. brian mattis was in it. no orioles outfielder can make a great catch. got three runs and knocks mattis from the game. 4-2 loss and then ends the winning streak.

a few more for the birds. masn on wjz. see the birds and the braves, first 130. in washington, d.c., the o's hoping the nationals can help out, playing the new york yankees in the series. no help from the nats. also hit a homer. new york wins 7-2. they increase their division league and then 1 1/2 games and then those yankees won six games in a row. in golf, tiger woods is the greatest of his era. it may be his era has passed. round two of the olympic club, a brutally difficult course. so tough only one golfer managed to shoot under par today. under par 69 and then that long
