his own trial, he is acquitted of all charges. >> vic, thank you. this was the government's second attempt to convict clemens, a mistrial was declared last july. another highlight point for the star spangled celebration. thousands have flocked downtown for the spectacular displays in the water and in the skies for charm city. now a special ceremony as those festivities come to a close. wjz is live at the inner harbor, jessica kartalija has the latest. >> reporter: it's hard to believe the week is almost coming toen a end here at celebration. today was the last full day of celebrate. i spent the morning at fort mchenry and it was incredible. a ceremony marking 200 years to the day since the start of the war of 1812. >> this is our story, this is a story worthy of the great

people and this is the story we will tell together. >> reporter: at fort mchenry, maryland's top brass marked two centuries of friendship between the u.s., britain and canada. >> for the first time ever, the ambassador of canada and the ambassador of the united kingdom came here to attest to peace, to reaffirm the close bonds that reaffirm our country together. >> you can fight battles, you can win wars, you can become allies but democracy is our greatest tribute. >> reporter: the morgan state choir performing the star spangled banner. >> it's cool that we get to participate in such a big part of maryland, because the war of 1812 happened here in baltimore and we go to morgan which is a state university. >> i'm very patriotic, i love fort mchenry, i love the history of this area. >> reporter: this also marks

bite. there is a new lawsuit from the man once suspected in the disappearance of maryland native robin gardener. gary jurdiano was suing to collect on jurdiano's policy. juordano was detained after gardener went missing after their trip to aruba. and jerry sandusky's attorneys are calling witnesses to show that sandusky was concerned about the well being of children. >> reporter: sandusky's lawyers are trying to show a different side. first up, former penn state assistant george anderson. he said he and other coaches

were around. he testified he didn't consider it inappropriate. a lawyer for one of the accusers says it doesn't seem like a strong defense to him. >> to persuade someone that mr. sandusky did was right by trying to establish that well people shower all the time, i don't think takes you very far. >> reporter: sandusky is charged with 51 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys on penn state's campus and his home. he met most of his accusers through his charity for at risk children. the judge told jurors it looks like the defense and prosecution will have everything wrapped up by wednesday with closing argumenting and jury deliberations starting tuesday. the defense may call sandusky's wife dotty and members of joe paterno's family and one of the last to testify may be sandusky himself. >> the lawyer has to see where things stand. >> reporter: the prosecution wrapped up its case with the mother of a boy sandusky is

accused of raping. he testified her son had behavior problems after spending time with sandusky. she also said her son's underwear would frequently be missing when she did the laundry. >> the state dropped one of the 52 counts against sandusky this morning because the law did not apply when the alleged crime took place. an awful tragedy for the president of the council. his son is killed in an accident on the family farm. police say 20-year-old benjamin bonaface died today after he lost control of a work vehicle then crashed at his family's work facility. the county government confirms he's the son of billy bonaface and the grandson of a local horse trainer william. that accident remains under investigation. another man learns his sentence for a baltimore county murder for trial plot. ployer will spend time in jail

for the murder of porter. prosecutors he helped porter's wife hire a hit man. and mike hellgren has more on how much money they will pay. >> reporter: five-cents unless it's dairy, juice or 2-liter container. and it's supposed to sail through the council tonight. the money will go to fixing schools. but the more than doubling of the tax is isn't coming without a fight. >> i agree that the schools need repair but on the backs of what industry. >> reporter: he's still working with city leaders for proposals but believes minds are made up. >> what the mayor wants she's going to get. >> reporter: for mr. santoni it comes down to jobs he says he's

already lost eight of them and he worries what other merchants are going through. the tax would jump from 2-cents to 5-cents. some of his customers are split on whether it's a good or raw deal. >> i save my pennys and pennys do add up quickly. and if i have to i can always go to the county where they don't have a tax. >> for the kids, everything is worth it. >> reporter: for many on the council the investment in schools is soarly needed. >> it's impossible for the young people to compete and learn at the rate they should when they have to deal with some kind of conditions every day. >> reporter: what's always been at the heart of the controversy, where the money comes from to flip the bill. >> reporter: and there are a lot of money issues at the discussion of the council. they voted today to recommend fully funding fire companies and rec centers with cuts to the police budget. we'll let you know what they decide on the bottle tax when it happens. live at city hall, mike

hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, mike. thank you. the bottle tax is expected to raise $10 million and the city will use it for school construction. we haven't said this in a couple of days cooler weather to kick off the workweek. lots of clouds outside tonight after showers moved through earlier today. he's updated the conditions in the weather center, bob. >> the showers stopped and came back a little bit. most of the sailabration today, dry. it will not affect the baltimore area at all. but if you're out in west virginia, you might hear some showers. west area pretty quiet just a lot of clouds. temperature wise we had 70 degrees now. that's the warmest i've seen all day long and that is about 13 degrees below average, 64 at oakland, 67 ocean city, hello,

i just lost my computer. maybe we'll try to get it back here. maybe. maybe not. well there's one. there you go. it's back up. we have a heat wave coming for at least three days this week, beginning tomorrow back up into the upper 80s but even hotter for wednesday and thursday. we're talking mid-90s but it'll feel more like 100 degrees, haven't seen that much, mary. >> that's for sure bob, thank you. bear sightings in baltimore and carroll county may have peaked recently. there are ways to ensure bears and people don't cross paths. >> over the past half century a growing black bear population has forced some young males out of western maryland with sightings in baltimore, howard and montgomery counties. >> this was him leaving going back into the woods. >> it'll travel 20 or more miles a day and travel for over 100 miles in order to find its own territory. >> reporter: in the past few

years bears have wandered as far as neighbors in queen anne county in the eastern shore. >> and he was up on two legs and he was reaching up into somber reu -- into somber -- some berries in a tree. >> reporter: biologists think it strayed from pennsylvania. >> it was not very big and it looked very thin. >> reporter: to limit contact with bears limit food sources, keep garbage cans locked inside a garage or shed. remove bird feeders, remove pet food. bears will the sniff out a free meal. >> waking up in the morning and seeing my bird feeder destroyed. he got into my trash can. >> reporter: in rare cases like this bear tranquilized sometimes they get too close. >> one of the worse case scenarios, it's hit by an automobile and now you have an injured bear in close proximity with far too many people.

pretty cloudy out there, 70 degrees in central maryland right now, the complete weather forecast is coming up. more controversy for the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of killing trayvon martin. tonight jailhouse phone calls between george zimmerman and his wife are made public. ines ferei reports, these calls prove that the couple lied

about their finances. >> reporter: phone calls between the couple showed the couple knew they had raised $150,000. >> how close am i? >> there's $8. >> total everything, how much are we looking at? >> like $155. >> okay, good. >> reporter: the calls also detail how zimmerman instructed his wife to transfer money between bank accounts. the former neighborhood watch volunteer is facing murder charges for killing 17-year-old trayvon martin. zimmerman claims the shooting of the unarmed teenager was self-defense. zimmerman was released on $150,000 bond in april, several days after the calls took place. at his bond hearing his wife shellie testified the couple was broke she is now facing perjury charges and zimmerman's bail was revoked. zimmerman can be also heard in the phone call asking his wife to buy bullet-proof vests for both of them and his attorney. >> you are going to get three

of them, right. >> three,. >> one for me, one for you and one for mark. >> ines ferrei, wjz eyewitness news. in another call, shellie zimmerman said the money was also being used to pay the couples personal bills. a verdict in the roger clemens perjury case, the jury finds clemens not guilty on all counts. the government charged him with lying under oath after he testified before congress in 2008 that he did not use performance enhancing drugs. moments ago, clemens reacted to his acquittal outside of the courthouse. >> it's been a hard five years and they've been great behind dad and supporting dad. my wife has been a rock behind us and all of our family at home in houston have been great. all the support, we had a bunch come up today and over the last, what was it six weeks.

>> we capped our ticket sales at 4,500 passengers per day. >> reporter: even today folks were talking taxies. >> we talked about driving around the áf but the -- but the water taxi is a straight shot. the beckers came to town from alexandria, virginia. you're going to be on the water taxi shortly. >> yeah. >> are you excited? have you ever been on a water taxi before? >> no. >> we waited long times and we did our best to move people as quickly as we could. >> reporter: but nearly everybody says worth the wait. >> it's been an amazing event. very distracted, we haven't been getting much done.

well, clouds and temperatures quite a bit lower than normal. normal high is up to 84. the high today so far has only been 70. really pleasant and it was so beautiful all last week. take a look at temps now we're at 70. it's a little warmer to the west but there's been some

showers. 73 in oakland and 73 in cumberland. locally, just around the 70- degree mark. the humidity is high today, it's going to be high the next couple of days but the temperatures will be on the rise, so we're talking about temperatures back up in the mid- to upper 80s tomorrow and it'll be also rather humid so it's going to feel pretty sticky. right now we have a light southeast wind around 9 miles per hour. but that's continued to bring in the ocean air that has kept temperatures down and kept the clouds in today. actually a warm front has developed to the north of us. that what gave us the showers, they're kind of breaking off now as they move to the east. just southwest, temperatures in the 80s, low 90s. that will be with us the next several days. by wednesday and thursday probably some mid, even upper 90s. there were widely scattered showers developing to the west. the majority passing southwest of us tonight. this little batch here northern ohio also i think is going to die out as it heads for west

up in flames. tonight, firefighters say it serves as the reminder of the importance of smoke detectors. rachel davis has the cause of the fire. >> reporter: tonight a family has become an example of what happens when a fire brews and there's no warning. baltimore city firefighters are still trying to determine what caused this home on east bourne avenue to go up in flames and why a smoke detector was not inside the home. >> a smoke alarm provides the early warning signal to allow you and your family to get out of that home. >> reporter: firefighters arrived within minutes and found thick black smoke and flames spewing out of the roof of the home. but the fire had already turned fatal. >> i performed the rapid attack to suppress the fire. other firefighters performed search and rescue. when they did find the remains of the person who perished inside that home. >> reporter: several people

inside the homemade it out alive. 54-year-old bruce wagner died along with two dogs near by neighbors stunned. >> this is sad, sad. i mean, i really feel bad for him. >> reporter: mechanic pat has lived across the street and says he cannot understand why there was not a fire detector. >> the fire department comes at least once a year, they knock on every door, they come around and give you a free smoke detector. >> reporter: the fire inside their wood frame home was brewing. coleman says his window was open and he could smell a problem. >> it looked like it was something off of a movie. >> reporter: your chances of dying in a house fire decrease significant because of one small device a smoke detector. >> the difference simply means life and death. >> reporter: and the damage is to the home are estimated at

$30,000. reporting live, rachelle richie. >> thank you, this is the second fatal house fire this year in baltimore city. new developments in the death of rodney king. vic carter is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: king was found early yesterday at the bottom of the swimming pool at his home in california. his death is being treated as an apparent drowning and police say there are no signs of foul play, still they need an autopsy to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor. king struggled with addiction and repeated arrests since his arrest and riots that followed. >> rodney king was 47 years old. the government expands a safety investigation into toyota vehicles looking at an additional 600,000 camrys and other models. they want to moe if the power window switches are at risk of overheating which can lead to fire. the probe now includes 1.4

million cars and suvs. there have been reports of more than 164 fires and nine injuries, so far no formal recall has been issued. for more evacuations, notices in colorado as powerful winds fuel a fire. the flames near fort collins have destroyed more than 180 homes. police are also concerned about luters targeting evacuated areas and houses despite strong wind gusts, fire crews have the fire about 45% contained. right now president obama and other world leaders are in mexico. they are looking for ways to keep europe from a major financial melt down. today danielle nottingham reports from washington. >> reporter: president obama sat down with the president of mexico who is hosting the g20 summit. world leaders are trying to find a fix for europe's debt

been hiding in plain sight the entire time. michelle miller reports for wjz he's been living in sweden under an assumed identity. for nearly 20 years, david hemler harbored a secret. his family in america didn't know where he was and his swedish wife didn't know who he really was. >> i have been living 28 years in lies lying to my friends and family. >> reporter: hemler was a fugitive, a deserter. he fled ate postin oxford germany reportedly distraught over president obama's policies regarding nicaragua, south africa and iraq. >> i started feeling pretty bad, i started fainting. i eventually asked for a discharge. >> reporter: when his request was denied he vanished without a trace and his family feared the worse. >> i personally believe he had

committed suicide. he had depression issues back then. >> reporter: but he was not dead. he hitchhiked in a journey of over 400 miles. he fathered three children and even got a job with the swedish government. >> i just, waited for until i would get caught. >> reporter: by coming forward so publicly now, hemler hopes his wife and children will not be caught off guard if he is ever arrested. for now though he's safe in sweden which won't extradite him to the u.s. michelle miller, in new york. the airport says it never stopped looking for hemler and the moment he sits foot off sweden he could be taken into u.s. custody. baltimore's star spangled celebration is getting ready to
