guilty verdict. jerry sanduskyen behind bars. new reaction to his conviction. >> good evening everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. jerry sandusky is in jail as a convicted child predator. published reports say that right now he is on suicide watch. manuel reports for wjz. the penn state community is ready to move forward. >> reporter: jerry sandusky's conviction is a relief for the penn state university community. >> i felt he was guilty and i was glad to see that verdict. >> no one wins, but there's some closure that we can have now. >> reporter: sandusky is now in the center county correction facility. his wife was seen returning home saturday, earlier she spent about 10 minutes at the jail. there were cheers as the 68- year-old left the courthouse after his conviction on 45 criminal counts involving the

sexual abuse of children. his defense attorney told the crowd it was a difficult case. >> the sentence that jerry will receive will be a life sentence just due to the length of it. >> reporter: joe amendola told us sandusky is like a naive kid himself and does not seem to fully understand the magnitude. >> it's been explained to him. whether or not he fully grasps it is anyone's guess. >> reporter: it could take years to play out in court with penn state officials still facing criminal charges, pending civil lawsuits and on going investigations. penn state released a statement saying it will privately and fairly address the victim's concerns. a juror said the accusers were all credible. and sandusky's lack of reaction to the verdict made jurors realize their decision was the right one. >> and the family of the late joe paterno, the famed coach

issued a statement saying that our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families. the penn state university president was also fired and two school officials still face charges. the sandusky case is hitting home. wjz is live with continuing coverage of the verdict. some new local reaction from those with penn state ties and also advocates of abuse victims. >> reporter: the detames of this case are horrific. local advocates say it's bringing much needed attention to this issue. the guilty verdict in the jerry sandusky sex abuse case struck a chord with people across the country. >> it's good to see justice can be served. also satisfying that people believe children. it's very hard to prove. >> reporter: as the executive director of baltimore child abuse center, he knows the

devastating effects. >> a guilty verdict doesn't fix the problem for society either. it just puts one pedophile away. >> reporter: the baltimore child abuse center this year is seeing an increase in the number of capes. they're on track to see more than 1100 children. >> it's not because abuse is up, but the attention is up. >> reporter: the case also showed how hard hero-like figures can fall. one local penn state alumni telling wjz, victim are in our thoughts and prayers always. justice was done. it goes to show when you have all the information in front you can make the right decision. and rosenberg says that 90% of sexual abuse victims are abused by people they know. >> coming up tonight on eyewitness news at 11 we'll talk with more penn state graduates for additional reaction. family and friends say a final good-bye to a baltimore

county teenager who died after a confrontation with an offduty police officer. a funeral was held for chris brown the randallstown teen died after an altercation with offduty officer. tonight brown's family wants his memory to live on. >> chris brown's mom wants everyone to know that this is just the beginning of the rest of his life because he leaves a legacy to the youth. your life can't be wasted. >> the officer remains on administrative leave during the investigation. no charges have been filed in the case. a somber funeral for a man killed in a cannibal attack. one congregation gathers to remember the morgan state student. >> reporter: members of the all nations gospel church sing in

remembrance of kujoe agyei- kodie. they're still shocked over the gruesome murder. >> the bible says everything happens for a reason. so why -- we shouldn't do that. >> reporter: detectives say late last month the former morgan state student disappeared. days later police found parts of his body in a home. investigates soon arrested 21- year-old alex abdomenner kinyua. they say kinyua admitted to eating parts of his heart and brain. >> i didn't ever thought about what really happened to him. i just googled joopa news and then the whole story came to me. >> reporter: anthony is agyei-

kodie's uncle. he's taking his body back to their home country next month. this memorial service is also a fundraiser to pay for an expensive burial. parishioners also prayed for the suspect. >> now agyei-kodie's family has set up a fund. if you'd like to help out, log on to wjz.com. some high winds rip apart a barn leaving incredible damage. check out the aftermath. more than 150 cows were inside the barn when it came crashing down. only one of them was hurt. one person was also inside but able to get out safely. winds had reached 60 to 70 miles an hour. another hot one out there. let's take a live look outside right now. what's in store for the rest of

the weekend? let's check out with bernadette woods. she's live with an updated look at the radar. >> at least it's not talking triple digits heat. that's our step back. we'll show you temperatures around the region right now. huge difference compared to a few days ago. it's a little less humid out there. we're going to cool down tonight. something else going on, in the tropics we have tropical storm debby. currenty moving off to the north. this is expected to take a turn towards the united states gulf coast. there's a lot of questions with the track of this storm. some models take it to the florida coast. some take it to the texas coast. some take it straight up the middle. we'll be following this closely. >> thanks so much. summer, it's officially here.

it feels like it. all the city pools are now hope daily. many of the pools have been open since memorial day weekend. every single pool is up and running. admission for the park pools is $1.50. the splash pads cost $1. he's a competition of tasty proportions happening in south baltimore. all right. dig in there. it's the taste of two cities being held today in west port. a competition between food trucks from baltimore and washington, d.c. 20 different trucks came out there. you have time to check it out. the event runs until 7:00 tonight. so you have just about an hour to get out there. they have some of the best food trucks out there. i definitely suggest them. some really good things out there. we have a lot more still to come tonight including the

there. it's mostly sunny and 88 degrees. bernadette will have the complete forecast coming up. as you can see tensions are running high in egypt ahead of tomorrow's anticipated presidential election results. egyptians cast ballots last saturday. a week later, still no official results. both have claimed victory. a raging wild fire is forcing more evacuations tonight. the high park fire has destroyed almost 200 homes and burned an estimated 68,000- acres. gusty winds also caused some spot fires to flare up. that prompted new evacuations. it could take months until it's fully under control. >> after two weeks of that fire

getting established in there, it's still trying to come alive. the resistance to control and the persistence of this fire is pretty unusual. >> they could use some rain. the fire was sparked by lightning earlier this month. a car filled with people catches fire in chicago. no one was hurt. a family including a 4-month- old baby. they pulled over to fix a flat tire when another car struck them. the gas tank erupted in flames it. the parents got everyone out seconds before the fire leveled that vehicle. a new york community is coming together to support a bullied bus monitor. that now infamous video of karen. during a rally supporters of the 68-year-old, they rallied around her and condemned the incident. she's declined to press charges. donations have surpassed $600,000. caught on camera, a pair of

black bears start sparring. you might want to call it a fight or a test of wills. the bears are in the longwood neighborhood. pretty amazing if you watch how they do this. after viewing the video, state wildlife officials believe these couple of younger males were probably trying to establish some territory there. roughing up some landscaping. after the battle they simply wandered off together. turns out they became friends after their fight. some severe weather ripped through pennsylvania. thunderstorms packing high winds brought down several tries in delaware county. lightning struck this tree here. ended up falling on to a car. there were two women inside the car here. you see them walking away. they were not hurt even though their car was heavily damaged. i was driving through washington, d.c. last night p right after a strong line of storms came through. a lot of big tree branches down. scattered damage from that.

>> it wasn't a horrible front. it did have some severe weather. we saw wind damage and some reports of hail. fortunately no tornadoes like last time. >> and a little bit of rain which cooled us off a tad. >> this is the beginning of our cooldown. >> doesn't it feel refreshing. >> the big difference is the dew points. they're down in the low 50s. that's why you couldn't get any relief in the shade. today you can in the shade with that west-northwest winds. we have cooler air coming our way for the middle part of the week. we'll have that coming up. ,,,,,

are way down. temperaturewise we're still up there. we're going below this average with another cold front coming our way. that's not for another day or so. a little cooler at 73 in okayland. some deep colors than we've had recently. there's another round of heat. that's going to stay to our west, at least for now. we've got that cooler air coming our way. not only today, but here's the next front that's going to come. chance for showers and thunderstorms. behind that is when we're going to notice a difference in the air mass. one more thing, down here this is what is now debby. we've been tracking it for a couple of day. t drifting off to the north. there are a lot of questions on what's going to happen. here's or forecast. one front leaving us. high pressure in control for today and most of tomorrow.

monday that next cold front comes through. that's going to bring the chance of showers and thunderstorms. then the cooler air behind it. the other thing that front is going to do is play into debby's forecast. if it gets far enough to the south quick enough it's going to kick debby off to the east. that's something we're going to have to watch. one thing we do know is it is going to cool us down. winds 52 miles per hour. the national hurricane center is biding the western track with this. it's still a huge window. that is a strong possibility. some of the other models take this off the east. we'll have to watch that. back here at home though, much quieter. a beautiful day to be on the water. and tomorrow will be also. southeast winds will turn around to the southwest and start to pick up. tonight mainly clear skies. going down to 62 degrees. tomorrow we go back up close to 90. we'll see more clouds come in though. then a chance for a couple of thunderstorms late in the day. better chance on monday as it

sizzle as the ravens hosting the redskins. but last night's game smelled good. baltimore's new ace was on the mound. he's armed and dangerous. jason hammel didn't waste any starts. last night he made another statement to the all-star committee by tying his career high with 10 strikeouts. the big righty is sixth in the league with a 2.61 era. hammel is more focused on the bigger picture. that's the team. >> i like to put expectations on myself and i hold myself to high expectations. i wanted to get deep in the ball games. just to establish yourself as a workhorses special in this league. >> i'm glad to see him get a return for what he's putting into it. he's a good guy to be around.

on game day he's got a little different look in his eye. >> the orioles are back home this week and they face their closest rivals. tomorrow afternoon it's masn on wjz. see them take on the nationals at 1:30. o's winning baseball games is great. but news isn't all good. before last night's game, o's outfielder nolan reimold signed autographs for fans. since may reimold has been on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his neck. he chose to have surgery which could end his season. a big blow nor may reimold who was the birds starting. >> it's disappointing. i wanted to not just individually but collectively too. the team has been playing well, to not be a part of it and just to watch it is kind of tough.

headed and where it could hit. here's a touching case of lost and found. after a 50-year-old wedding ring was lost and then suddenly it turned up in the backseat of a car. darlene king's husband tom recently passed away. he lost that wedding band in texas 5 years ago. the couple of that you saw, they bought the car from that other couple. they were cleaning it out and found the ring in the backseat. they searched the vin number, tracked down the ring. she says from now on she's going to wear it as a necklace. that is amazing. >> that's a wonderful story. >> also tonight, a texas boy fighting a rare disease is ready to take on crime. the nonprofit made shorthand chandler an official parker county sheriff's deputy. chandler has been diagnosed with a terminal disease and a malformation in the brain. he's been suited for patrol deputy uniform.
