tropical storm debby slams florida's gulf coast with heavy rain and isolated tornadoes. mass evacuations. another colorado wildfire forces thousands to flee their homes and muslim milestone. egypt's first islamic president declares himself president for egypt's first islamic president declares himself president for all egyptians. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, june 25, 2012. and good morning everybody. good to be with you on a monday. i'm terrell brown. this morning tropical storm debby is lashing parts of florida. residents in low-lying areas along the gulf coast are being urged to leave. the storm is creeping along, dumping heavy rain and dropping isolated tornadoes. one person has reportedly been

killed. debby is about 115 miles off florida's west coast with winds clocking in at 60 miles per hour. tropical storm warnings run along the gulf coast to central florida and a tropical storm wafrp watch runs from further south. some parts of northern florida could get as much as 25 inches of rain. althea paul from tampa bay is north of tampa with more. >> there is believed to have been a tornado that touched down in this area behind me. you can look and see a tree that was brought down by those heavy winds. not only downed trees, there are fences that have been blown own. there are parts of roofs ripped off. again, it's not just the wind. they were dealing with some flooding, but the majority of the flooding in pasco county is on the west side of a highway called u.s. 19. in that area there were mobile homes flooded out, streets impassable and some areas evacuated and head to shelters.

emergency crews, they are telling people not to go out if they don't have to go out. stay inside. because they do expect that with the storm stalling things are going to get worse the next couple of days. in newport richie, althea paul for cbs news. >> meteorologist from miami says the biggest threat from debby is the rain. >> we'll see the threat for fast moving rain wrapped tornado. we've seen a number of tornadoes across the state during the day on sunday. we'll see the possibility of minor to moderate coastal flooding. the biggest impact from the system is going to be flooding rains. take a look at how much rain we expect the next two days. some places could see as much as 1 foot and locally as much as 2 feet of flooding rains. >> tropical storm debby is expected to make landfall later this week. in the florida panhandle. in colorado, a wildfire forced 1,000 people from their

homes and threatening a popular camping ground. the blaze is one of 20 uncontrolled fires raging in the u.s. most of them in the west. at least eight are in colorado. andrea lopez looks at toll the fires are taking on homes and firefighters. >> bone dry winds and high temperatures soaring into the 90s are driving the waldo canyon fire. it's blackened over 2,000 acres since noon on saturday and tonight remains uncontained. colorado governor was on the scene this morning. >> our focus is to make sure everyone is safe, people are evacuated, protect our firefighters. over 1,050 homes have been evacuated in colorado springs as worried less dents gather their possessions and go to safety. >> we have deputies going door to door along with firefighters making sure people are out and some of the deputies shared with me that was the scariest thing they ever saw, getting out of that area and seeing the fire and the concern they had for the residents. >> it's really scary.

in the moment you really evaluate what is the most important thing and i looked at my kids and said as long as i have you guys, my husband, our cat and some pictures, i mean the rest we can do without. >> multiple agencies are battling this fire with more help on the way. the governor says that almost half the nation's airborne firefighting equipment now in colorado. elsewhere, firefighters have made progress. the high park fire west of fort collins is now 45% contained. that blaze, now the second largest in colorado's history has burned more than 82,000 acres over the course of 16 days. for cbs news, i'm andrea lopez reporting in colorado springs, colorado. overseas, egypt's new president is scheduled to meet with military leaders to reach a power deal. president obama called and congratulated him yesterday shortly after being declared the

winner of the first free presidential election. the white house says they -- charlie d'agata has more on the joyous celebration from tahrir square. >> it took a moments for wore of the victory to sink in. then the crowd roared. [ cheering ] >> they weren't all supporters ever the muslim brotherhood or its candidate, mohamed morsi. they came to tahrir square to protest against military rule and came hoping to celebrate a turning point in egypt's history the country's first democratically elected president. >> having been there from the beginning, what does this day mean to you? >> i cried like hell. >> you cried? >> i cried like hell. i thank god like hell. i can't express anything. this is just a step. we still have a long road ahead. >> it was close. election officials said mohamed morsi beat his rival, ahmed shafiq with 51.7% of the vote.

>> as the news crowds in tahrir square were waiting to hear. people see this victory as justice. for fellow egyptians who lost their lives fighting for freedom on this very square. 16 months ago, tahrir square became the frontline in the revolution to overthrow president hosni mubarak. in the scene of deadly clashes between pro-democracy demonstrators and forces loyal to the regime. more than 900 people were killed. >> in his victory speech, mohamed morsi said their deaths would not be in vain. the u.s. trained engineer said that he would be a president for all egyptians. across town, supporters of shafiq appeared to be in a state of shock to hear the news of their candidate's defeat. they accused the generals of lacking the courage to stand up to the muslim brotherhood. for his supporters, the celebration picked up when the sun went down.

>> there's no doubt the celebrations will go on for some time. but tahrir square will go back to being a protest camp and the muslim brotherhood resumes its campaign to get the parliament back in session and try to restore some presidential powers. charlie d'agata, cbs news, cairo. nato will hold emergency talks tomorrow to discuss what action to take following syria's downing of an unarmed turkish jet on friday. on sunday, secretary of state, hillary clinton condemned the attack. meanwhile, at least 40 people were killed in clashes between rebels and syrian forces yesterday. video shows rebels bombarding government soldiers in a town near homs. back in the u.s., jerry sandusky is on suicide watch. the former assistant coach of penn state was convicted friday on 45 counts of sexually abusing young boys. esque held at the county jail. he could get more than 400 years behind bars. his lawyers tried to resign because they didn't have time to prepare for the trial but the

judge wouldn't let them. all eyes will be on the supreme court this week. the justices are expected to hand down two major rulings, one on the president obama health care law and the other on the controversial immigration law. susan mcginnis has details. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. the two decisions come at the end of the supreme court's term and right in the middle of a presidential election. both have political ramifications and both sides are making plans for the outcome. the supreme court will hand down two landmark decisions this week. justices will announce rulings on health care and immigration. the court will decide if the affordable care act is constitutional. the most controversial provision known as the individual mandate requires most people to buy insurance or face a penalty. >> all along, we've said, real problems, this isn't the solution. >> republicans say the law drives up health care costs and makes it harder for small businesses to hire workers.

democrats say the law gives health coverage to millions of uninsured americans. >> we're never going to go back those days where my child could be denied access to my health insurance because he or she has a preexisting condition. >> the court is also deciding whether to let police in arizona enforce part of the immigration law allowing police to check the immigration status of anyone they stop and hold those they suspect of being illegal immigrants. >> arizona has an all-out border problem not just about immigration, it's about security. >> the obama administration sued the state of arizona saying it interferes with federal immigration laws. in each case the court is deciding whether or not to uphold white house actions, leaving both outcomes critical in an election year. >> the house will vote to repeal whatever is left of obama care. >> some democrats say a ruling against the white house could help in the november elections. >> it's going to energize the democratic base. >> the supreme court could issue

a giant leap for china in space. astronauts aboard the shenzhou 9 spacecraft successfully completed a docking with an orbiting module sunday. it's the latest hurdle by china as it prepares to launch its own space station by 2020. three union pacific crew members are missing and presumed dead after the collision of two freight trains in oklahoma. the trains crashed head on and exploded into flames on sunday.

50 firefighters battled the fire which burned for hours. a fourth crew member survived the crash. cbs "moneywatch" time on a monday. gas prices continue to fall and a new disney cartoon hits its mark. ashley morrison is back. good morning. >> good morning to you, terrell. overseas markets were cautious ahead of the union summit. tokyo's nikkei fell three-quarters of a percent. the hang seng lost half a percent. wall street begins after a friday rally. the dow climbs 67 points on friday after the second worst selloff of the year and the nasdaq was 33 points higher. at the e.u. summit greek leaders will try to renegotiate terms. of the international bailout. the leaders of italy, france, germany and spain plan to push for a $163 billion growth package. italy's prime minister says european leaders know they have not done enough to pull europe out of the economic crisis. cheaper gas is on the way.

the price of gas continues to drop. according to the lundberg survey, the average price of a gallon of gas is down 15 cents over the past two weeks. a gallon of regular costs $3.48. a shortage of truckdrivers is driving up freight rates and delaying some deliveries. many baby boomer truckers are retiring and fewer young people are interested in long haul trucking. usa today reports the annual turnover rate at large carriers rose to a four-year high of 90%. and terrell, a princess tops the box office. brave, featuring a feisty scottish princess is the first of the pixar animations with a female protagonist. it debuted at number one earning $66.7 million in the u.s. and another $13.5 million overseas. it knocked madagascar 3 out of the top spot to number 2 followed by abraham lincoln, vampire hunter.
