immigration reform, the nation's highest court strikes down parts of a controversial law. >> what happened next. i'm don't scott. >> i'm jessica tar tell yeah. >> we -- kartalija. >> the united states supreme court rejecting parts of arizona's immigration law, taking the teeth out of its most controversial parts. >> the supreme court struck down parts of an arizona law designed to crack down on illegal immigration. for now the justices are letting a provision go forward that requires police to check the immigration status of anyone they arrest or apprehend. in their 5-3 rules the justices said police cannot arrest people on minor immigration charges as the arizona law laid out. arizona officials say they passed a law 2 years ago because the federal government was not doing enough to stop illegal immigration. the law sparked

protests across the country and calls to boycott arizona. critics said it would lead to racial profiling and the obama administration filed suit on the basis it interfered with federal immigration laws. >> today the supreme court ruled that federal law trumped many provisions in arizona's law and that's why they stuck it down. the justices left the door open to other legal challenges. >> till arizona's republican governor jan brewer called today's ruling a victory for rule of law. the supreme court rules has implications beyond arizona's border. 13 other states have similar laws or are considering new ones. >> one justice did not take part in the case because she helped the obama administration

craft its legal arguments. a 7 alarm fire forces people to flee their homes. now they're waiting for the all clear to go back. mike schuh is live with when they may be able to return home. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. the all clear has been given and folks are going back. last night those who lived closest had to spend it somewhere else because it was too dangerous. >> one seen from the air this -- when seen from the air the choking smoke remains. you can see this fire is in a wooded area but floating embers endangered homes. folks awoke sunday to the smell of smoke. >> i came outside and looked and saw the smoke. >> soon hundreds of firefighters were battling a 40 acre blaze burning in a decemberly wooded area -- densely wooded area. with winds fanning the flame, providing plenty of fuel firefighters called in help from surrounding counties to gain control. >> we have bulldozers cutting

pathways and we're taking firefighters back there. it's a long process. >> those wind carried smoke, ash and embers into a neighborhood along the road. emergency officials ordered the evacuation of 20 homes. >> it's scary. we didn't think it would come to this. here we go. >> wendy canter and her family among the dozens of people who grabbed what they could and left. >> we're getting our cars and up the road. >> by nightfall the fire was under control and contained, but the smoke still too thick. >> reporter: the cause of that fire is still under investigation. i'm mike schuh reporting live, jessica, back to you. >> thank you. fire crews will continue to monitor the forest today to lack for any remaining hot spots. it's a different part of nature attacking the gulf coast as debby is delivering heavy rain and flooding. check out the scene in northern florida

where the wind and huge waives are battering the coastline there. hundreds of homes are already without power. the storm is being blamed for one death from a tornado as well. debby hasn't made land fall yet. bernadette woods is tracking the storm. good afternoon, bernadette. >> good afternoon. it's not going to for a couple of days. this thing is barely moving at all. don't drive through water like that. first warning doppler radar, still a lot of rain out there and still the threat of tornados all across florida. this is moving in different waives. it covered most of the state yesterday. there are a few areas where it's breaking up. you can see all the bright colors indicating heavy amounts of rain. tampa has got 10 inches of rain so far and we're not finished with this storm. it has lost om some -- some strength. winds are closer to 50, but it's still a tropical

the emotional testimony from the eight men who took the stand against the former penn state assistant football coach. an attorney for one to have accusers says his client is prepared to speak to the court again at sentencing. >> my client, he told me that he was numb. he told me that he felt like it was an out of body experience. he told me that he is prepared to come and testify if need be at the sentencing hearing. >> reporter: sandusky who pleaded not guilty is expected to be sentenced within 90 days. jessica, back to you. >> experts say sandusky will mostly spend the rest of his life in a prison cell. a man is gunned down in the city of annapolis and now police are searching for who did it. it happened saturday. 29-year-old orlando mcdaniel later died. the shooting marks the first murder in annapolis this year. in east baltimore city

earlier. we have a couple showers and thunderstorms to talk about. now not a whole lot but where they are coming down we have had severe thunderstorm warnings for ocean city twice earlier today. now this is all a bart of a cold front clearing the area and will bring a break to the higher humidity and heat we had over the weekend although that is down from what happened lastweek. this is the second part coming right now. spotty showers in here. these are the thunderstorms that have been coming through right now? right around millford into lewis and also south of ocean city. those are heading out to sea. so we will show you we had spotty showers and a thunderstorm or two during the overnight hours. and then this is associated with the cold front. once that clears the winds turn around to the northwest and bringing in that cooler dry her air at least temporarily. 77 where we sit right now in baltimore. we will go up a little bit morethis afternoon but the dew points will drop heading through the evening hours. here's a big look at everything going on. here's our front we are dealing with. but it's also interacting with debby the reason that debby is

making that turn off to the east. debby has a lost the lot of strength but not size. look at the size of this. it's pulling in drier air on the western side and that's why it is losing some of the strength. another reason that front approaching is mixing up the atmosphere so it can't ventilate and become larger but the thing is it's doing the damage and it's going to continue to because it's not moving that quickly. winds closer to 50 miles per hour. moving off to the northeast barely at 3 miles per hour and on the track we are taking you through saturday and we are talking about debby not moving all that much. so it's going to continue to pull more rain and the threat for tore that i hados -- tornado along the florida peninsula. we have this front going through and spectacular day for tomorrow. but after that, the heat builds once again because take a look out far west this could be the 4th or 5th day in a roll with temperatures in the 100sin denver. forecast looks like this for today. 85 for our high. we have sunshine returning as we head through the afternoon
