00 starts now. debby's destruction, the tropical storm batters florida. >> the damage so far and where it's headed next. >> i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bub ala, and here's what people are talking about. >> we go to pensacola, florida where heavy rain is pounding the nowhere part of the state as debby slowly marches towards the coast. >> reporter: rough seas are pounding alligator point, florida as debby stalls in the gulf of mexico. waves washed out a road with a mandatory evacuation for people living in low-lying areas around franklin county. heavy rain is dremping northern florida as debby crawls towards the coast. flooding is the biggest concern with the potential of 25" of rain to fall, and there is a threat of tornadoes. people say one tore through on

sunday night. >> it came through like a freight train and flying glass and lifted a concrete table at 15, 20 feet. >> reporter: debby is creating dangerous conditions throughout florida, and water surrounded this vacation home on sunday. the coast guard used a helicopter to rescue 9 and a dog. an estimated four million people are expected to feel the everybody elses of debby. the governor declared a state of emergency. >> everyone needs to be very, very cautious. don't take anything for granted, and take care of your family. >> reporter: debby isn't expected to make landfall until thursday. >> the national hurricane center reports tropical storm debby weakened slightly today and has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. first warning weather coverage continues with with bernadette woods tracking where debby is right now. >> we will start out with the

doppler radar. it's pounding florida. any time you have a connection of land and a tropical storm system, it can spin a tornado easily. and look at all these really dark colors coming into the panhandle. heavy amounts of rain where we are seeing close to a foot of rain and a lot more to come because of this. as kai was saying, the latest at 45 miles per hour and it has weakened, and it's slowly drifting off to the northeast at only 5 miles per hour. and notice this graphic takes us through saturday. but we're still showing it close to or on top of florida. this will be around with us for a while. as long as it has the connection with the gulf, it will continue to take the bands of rain and the potential for tornadoes onto the peninsula. here is the latest as far as the forecast models show, big changes since over the weekend and shifting off to the east, and that looks like where it's

going to go. mayory? >> bernadette, thank you. stay with first warning weather for forecast updates any time. a seven-alarm fire in queen anne's county forced families from their home. mike schuh explains it triggered a huge response. >> reporter: fire is no longer a threat to the homes. as such early this morning, firefighters allowed folks who were displaced to get back to their residences. when seen from the air this morning, the choking smoke remains. but there is less of it than on sunday. this fire is in a wooded area, but floating embers endangered homes. folks in southern kemp county awoke sunday to the smell of smoke. >> i came outside and look and found the smoke. >> reporter: soon, hundreds of firefighters are battling a 40- acre blaze with winds fanning the flames and thick, dry brush providing plenty of fuel, and the firefighters called in help from surrounding counties and

the forestry service to gain control. >> we have bulldozers cuttings pathways and taking the firefighters back to the paths. but it's a long and involved process with a heavily wooded area. >> reporter: the winds out of the southeast carried smoke, ash, and embers into a neighborhood, and officials ordered the evacuation of 20 homes. >> it's scary. we didn't know it would come to this. but here we go. >> reporter: wendy canter and her family are among those who grabbed what they could and left. >> we are getting in the cars and getting up the road and then figure something out. >> reporter: by night fall, the fire was contained but the smoke too thick for the residents to return. back to you on tv hill. >> wjz is back on the eastern shore for more on the fire with a live report new at 5:00. wildfires continue to burn out west seriously affecting people in colorado and utah. adam may has the latest on the

efforts to get them under control. >> reporter: mary, they are big fires, and more evacuations as well today. this is new video in el paso county, colorado. the so-called waldo canyon fire has burned more than 3600 acres and in utah, more evacuations as the wood hollow fire in fountain green is growing in size, and crews are also working in the high park fire in colorado. that was sparked earlier this month by lightning. >> the high park fire is 50% contained, and it could take months before it's fully under control. an investigation is underway in an anne arundel county after a fire breaks out at the hospital. arson investigators are asking for your help to identify this person. a fire was set in the elevator at the an anne arundel medical center's health sciences building. crews say it was set on purpose. family and friends are

mourning the loss of a maryland marine killed in afghanistan. lance corporal eugene mills iii died friday during combat. his body is returning to the united states today. the 21-year-old from laurel is the fifth service member from maryland killed this year and the fourth to die in afghanistan. the much-anticipated supreme court's ruling on arizona's immigration law is getting mixed reaction across the country. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. >> reporter: the supreme court has rejected key parts of arizona's crackdown on illegal immigration. in reading the 5-3 majority opinion, justice anthony kennedy said that the court agreed with the obama administration saying it falls under federal not state jurisdiction and struck down a requirement that all call

citizenship papers. but the high court said that the most controversial part of the 2010 law requiring police check the immigration status of those they stop could go forward prompting arizona's republican governor to declare victory. >> the heart of senate bill 1070 has been proven to be constitutional. >> reporter: the majority of justices also where ruled that police cannot arrest people on minor immigration charges and left the door open to other legal challenges to the law. >> it has essentially opened the flood gates. it has opened the flood gates to racial profiling. >> reporter: in a statement, president obama said he was pleased that the court struck down most of arizona's law and called on congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. mitt romney's campaign released a statement saying that the ruling proved a need for stronger leadership in the oval office. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. five other states have

adopted versions of the arizona law, and they were on hold until the court ruled on the case. justice elena kagan did not take part because she helped craft the legal arguments in her previous job. and the supreme court is set to decide if president obama's health care law is constitutional and centers on the requirement that all americans have health insurance or pay a penalty. the court could hold it up in its entirety, struck down parts of it or declaring the entire bill unconstitutional. the decision expected thursday. we have a nice start to your work week. cloudsand sun are in the area. we have weather and traffic together. bob turk has updated numbers from first warning weather. hi, bob. it's drying out beautifully with great weather headed our way for the near term.

people are still trapped. three workers feared dead in oklahoma after a fiery train collision. smoke was visible for miles after two freight trains crashed head on in the panhandle. investigators were on the scene trying to figure out how it happened. search teams say they have to wait for the wreckage to cool down before they look for victims. a horrific discovery inside a missouri apartment. a 10-year-old girl was starved and forced to lived in a closet, and the abuse may have gone for years. >> reporter: in the watkins court apartment complex, folks watch out for each other's children. >> i love all these kids. >> reporter: they sit and chat with their neighbors. >> every holiday, we got something going on. >> reporter: so the news that there was a 10-year-old girl trapped in a closet inside this apartment and no one knew hit hard. >> i have been here three years and never seen a child. >> if i knew the baby was up there, i would have went and

got the baby myself. >> she's in a very serious situation. >> reporter: the jackson county prosecution shared details about the horrible conditions. >> not only was the door barricaded from the outside, but there were shoe strings or some string that was bound around the two knobs of the doors. she obviously had defecated multiple times, and the urine, i'm told, hard to bear. >> reporter: she weighs just 32 pounds, less than half what she should for her age. >> she was very dirty and upkept, but amazingly as children end to to surprise all of us, she had very good spirits. >> police say that the mother had two other children, and those children appear clean and well fed. investigators say they don't know why this 10-year-old girl was singled out. a rocky start to the week

on wall street. european concerns dragged the markets down. the dow off 138 and the s&p 500 off 21 and the nasdaq, 56. let's go to alexis christoforous. >> reporter: cypress is the fifth eurozone country to ask for a bailout. it's struggling to pay debt because of the exposure to the greek economy. the bail out request comes on the same day fitch downgraded the status making it more expensive for the island nation to borrow money, and greece's prime minister quit after just five days on the job and leaves greece without a finance minster just as the government prepares to negotiate new terms for the bailout. europe's troubles are sending crude oil below $79 a barrel,

and experts predict prices will fall to $70 in the next 12 to 18 months, and that's good news for drivers. according to the lopped berg survey, a gallon of gas is down 15 cents in the past two weeks. and new home sales jumped to a two-year high in may and climbed 7.6% as more people took advantage of record low mortgage rates, but many people are having difficulty qualifying for a loan or can't afford the bigger down payment that banks require. you can go to cbs money watch.com for more. i'm alexis christoforous. a large flock of ducks stretched their legs in china. more than 5000 ducks hit the street on their usual trek to a local pond. a picture of this same scene went viral online last week. the farmer who owns the ducks he is not trying to make news and doesn't want to be all over youtube but takes the birds on

all right. a nice day outside. >> it really is beautiful here. we already started to lose the humidity in baltimore, but down south and east, the front has not completely pushed through, and because of that, not only showers and thunderstorms but severe thunderstorm watches in effect. for most of maryland, this is leaving us pretty quickly. alingering shower off to the

north, and that is diving down. so we will switch over and show you this is what it looks like. we did have a couple of showers in the overnight, but that's leaving us, and a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for lower parts of the eastern shore through 8:00 tonight, and that will be leaving us shortly. the winds are turning around to the northwest behind the front, and they are picking up and bringing in much drier and cooler air. the dew points earlier today in the 60s and now in the 40s, and that's why it feels so refreshing outside. 88 is where we sit, and temperatures higher than we thought. but out to the west, 78 in cumberland, and the average is 86. today, we were at 88. we'll be below average tomorrow, but after that, we will start climb once again and be closer to records. something else going on. down to the south, we have been talking about this.

tropical storm debby. here is the latest, a massively sized storm although it has lost strength, and it's incredibly large. it pulled in drier air on the west side, and it's weakening, and the front moving our way is directing debby off to the east and breaking it apart somewhat. this is such a big storm, it will hang onto tropical storm strength for the next couple days and it's barely moving northeast at five miles per hour, and even though this cone takes us through saturday, we will be talking about debby. once it moves over land, it's a tropical depression, but there are questions once it clears florida, it could gain strength? a lot going on, and the models have totally turned around taking this across florida, and again over the open waters, there is a chance for restrengthening. stay tuned. we are not finished with debby yet. but back at home, cooler air for tonight and a beautiful day tomorrow. but as we head through the second half of the week, this

it leads to new bus regulations to better protect students and monitors. karen klein is inspiring people to stand up to bullying after being harassed by middle school students hoping it will change behavior on the school buses. >> i don't finish they ever just get to the kids' problems, but we'll find out. >> reporter: bus monitors and others gathered to support karen. one bus monitor said that bullying on bus has been a major problem and believes students should be punished with community service or suspension. >> i'm sorry to say, but it had to start with somebody, and god used karen to be an example. >> reporter: students came to show support for karen. one student bullied her read her a letter. >> just trying to support her because she has had such a hard time. and it's just a letter making

her feel comfortable and striaing to help her through what she experienced on that bus. >> reporter: karen said she can't believe the attention the controversy has gained and believes her story can serve as a lesson. >> it's like all this is coming about. everybody's talking about it. things will be done now about the other children that might do it. they won't. >> reporter: klein is not pressing criminal charges against the boys, but the investigation is continuing. adam? >> nice to see the woman get so many hugs, mary. thank you. donations for klein have surpassed $600,000. and breaking his silence, former penn state football coach jusky is speaking out for the very first time since convicted on dozens of counts of child molestation. kai is live with more on what his attorneys have to say. >> reporter: that's right. sandusky's attorneys say he is still professing his innocence

behind bars, and he is on routine suicide watch but is not suicidal. the jury convicted him of 45 counts of abuse on under aim boys. both prosecutors and defense attorneys expect a life sentence. >> thank you, kai. and there will be an internal investigation into the handling from the school of the case. and in philadelphia, the catholic community is searching for closure following a landmark sex abuse trial. one priest is facing jail time, but advocates say that the fight isn't over. >> reporter: the past 18 months have brought unparalleled challenges to the archdiocese in philadelphia, but the church can begin to heal after an 11- week trial and 13 days of jury deliberation. monsignor william was found guilty on one count, and charges against another father

resulted in a hung jury. >> i don't like a cover up, but it's been going on forever, and people don't know how to create react to the things. >> reporter: forever a church that has dealt with so much recommend, this is a chance to rebuild faith and confidence. >> i have a lot of catholic friends devastated by this, and they love the church and are hurt by this. >> reporter: snap, the survivor's network of those abused by priests, passed out letters urging other victims to come forward. >> i wish das across the country would start to look into the dealings of each of the diocese in the states. >> reporter: with the trial now over, the church has an opportunity to move forward and strengthen the bonds with the parishioners who had relationship to doubt until now. >> monsignor lynn faces seven years in prison when sentenced

in august. a man in maryland gunned down, and police are searching for who did it. neighbors called after hearing gunshots in the 1100 block of madison street. when officers arrived, they found 29-year-old orlando mcdaniel suffering from fatal gunshot wounds, and this shooting marks the first murder this year. no arrests have been made in the case. and a stabbing in annapolis lands two men behind bars. police say they were with the victim moments before he was found stabbed in in the torso. right now, both are facing disorderly conduct charges as police try to figure out who stabbed the victim. the victim is in stable condition at shock trauma. in today's wjz healthwatch report, preschoolers with food allergies have serious reactions despite the best efforts by their parents. more now on this troubling

trend. >> reporter: little barry holden was just a baby when her mom gave her yogurt for the first time. >> as soon as i gave it on her, she broke out head to toe, hives everywhere. >> reporter: she was allergic to the milk in the yogurt and soy, nuts, and eggs. more than 70% of preschooler who is have food allergies still experience reactions to the food they are supposed to avoid. >> there have been times when she will break out in one small hive and say oh, there may have been something in what shate. >> reporter: researchers say misreading ingredient labels may lead to cross contamination or if someone other than the parent was watching the child. >> we need to talk about the parent making sure that everyone taking care of child know how to avoid the food. >> reporter: eny

away, and there were reports of hail and gusty winds with some of the shower that is moved through the area down south of us this afternoon, and we had a couple of trees down, but that's moving away, and tryer and cooler air moving in and the next few days look spectacular as low pressure drive this is cooler and drier air in from canada. it will stay this way for a couple of days and by the end of the week, the same jet stream will allow heat and humidity to return by friday and saturday. >> it should be interesting, bob. thank you. and sharon gibala is in wjz's traffic control. good afternoon, sharon. >> reporter: high adam. everything is running smoothly overall, just a bunch of run-of-

thousands of homes destroyed after a deadly earthquake ripped through a mountain town in southwest china. at least four people are killed and hundreds of others treated for injuries tonight. and some are still missing. more than 50 after shocks have been felt since the 5.7 quake struck early yesterday. rescue efforts are still underway as we speak. at least 19 people are killed after a bus flipped off a bridge in south africa. the driver lost control and crashed 30 feet below. several other passengers had to be cut out of the wreckage. investigators are trying to figure out the cause. people in colorado can't get a break. another wildfire breaks out and has grown to 3600 acres. >> reporter: it's become an all- too familiar sight for colorado

residents, the outlook in colorado springs not encouraging with hot and windy weather expected to continue to fan the flames. >> the fire is growing in three general directions, to the northeast,s to the southwest, and to the northwest. >> reporter: the fire has displaced thousands from their home. >>it is what do we take in case our house burns down? it's really hard. >> reporter: firefighters will get no help from mother nature. the temperatures are expected to hit the a new 90s for the next two days. >> i think it's probably the greatest natural threat we've seen to the community in 30, 40 years. >> reporter: there are eight wildfires burning across colorado right now, the largest at more than 80,000 acres, and officials have no idea when the newest fire will be contained. >> an estimated 6000 residents are under mandatory evacuation

orders. the un peacekeeping mission in syria is suspended. kai is live with the latest. >> reporter: adam, it's been nine days since the head of the un peacekeeping monitors have suspended controls in syria. they say they are not going anywhere until the fighting stops. continued shelling has prevented the red cross from evacuating civilians, and turkey is threatening to take action after syria reportedly downed one of the planes over the weekend. >> kai, thank you, and turkey said it will push nato to consider the actions as an attack on the whole military alliance. tens of thousands of egyptians celebrate in the central square in cairo. the very latest now from london. >> reporter: some are sleeping off a long night of celebration in cairo.

hundreds are camping out in tahrir square the morning after mohamed morsi was elected president in egypt's first free election. crowds cheered when morsi was confirmed a winner of the tight race. the 61-year-old promised to unite the country and represent all egyptians. his party, the muslim brotherhood, had been been banned in egypt for years. ho circumstance ni muck -- mubarak is fighting for his life after multiple strokes. the election aftermath was calm. u.s. officials congratulated the islamic leader, and israel said it respected the outcome. but some are concerned it could jeopardize realizations with egypts. >> i am more worried for the egypt yops.

drive one first. who taught you how to drive? no one. an 11-year-old boy was stealing a bait car in new mexico and made a pit stop to pick up a couple of friends. the boys do have to answer to someone worse than a judge. they have to answer to their parents. turns out they are smarter than their average bear. check out this neat video. a baby bear is stuck in a garage in new jersey right up there. but don't worry. here comes mama bear. she was able to get occupy the door from the outside and then encourages the cub to climb down the ladder. doesn't this video look staged? it's real. they both walked out of the garage, and everywhere was just fine. i wonder who took that. gotta see that.

we didn't see a whole lot of rain in the baltimore area, but down south, there were thunderstorms, and the breeze out there and very dry air moving in has an increase in fire danger. be careful whatever you do. that is it for the rain for the next four or 5 days. and right now, we have jumped up to 88, and the dew point has dropped down to 49, very dry air. the humidity only at 26%. so the woodlands that didn't get a lot of rain are very dry.

be with us, maybe not that cool but probably in the upper 70s most of the day tomorrow. and the west wind, look at it, 15, 21, 21, and it's a northwest breeze bringing in the dry air, and now there's debby. it's still causing a lot of rain with the flow out of the tropics, and all that rain will continue particularly to the north with a threat of tornado activity. for us, the front is moving off the east coast and dry air and lookinga at several beautiful days, and heat and humidity returning by the end of the week. wednesday, just delightful, and then we'll start warming up again towards the end of the week. the winds, breezy on the bay and the bay temp around 78. overnight, clear and comfortably cool and beautiful sleeping weather tonight. tomorrow, lots of sun. this time of year, we'll call it cool or mild and tomorrow's high near 80.
