baltimore is packed with children trying to stay cool. outside right now it is hot and sunny. sky chopper 13 is over beaver dam swim club. a heat advisory will take effect in a few hours. it looks nice and refreshing. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. tim williams and bob turk are tracking the temperatures and the potential danger across maryland. let's start inside in the coolness with bob. >> the water in that lake is about 68, 70. that's a way to cool off. at last report, the mid 90s. 90 elkin, 94 oakland, 89 ocean city. it's so dry out that 95 degrees actually feels lower. it feels like 92 degrees. now, that opposite will happen tomorrow. we're going to back up, warmer and more humid conditions. right now we're at 95 degrees, but

with the low dew point it feels down to 92. our average high is only 86. the record 99. this weekend we're going to get pretty close to some records. tim has a look at the advisories that will be in effect tomorrow. >> reporter: for our benefit, the advisories have actually improved. we had excessive heat watches and warnings, now we have advisories in place. the heat at advise ri in effect on -- advisory in effect on friday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. we're talking about temperatures as we've talked about already challenging the records, which will be around 100 degrees. the heat that's coming in our direction is already now in the west and southwest. chicago now at 98, kansas city at 99, dallas at 99. all that is moving in our direction as we expect to see a shift in the wind around most of the area to the west and the southwest. it's going to usher in most of that air over the next few days.

the controversy is still brewing. >> supporters of president obama's health care reform law celebrated outside the supreme court. >> obama care is here to stay. >> in a 5-4 vote the justices ruled nearly all of the affordable care act is constitutional. >> the highest court in the land has now spoken. we will continue to implement this law. we will work together to improve on it where we can. >> siting congress's four power to tax -- power to tax, john roberts joined in upholding the individual mandate. the part of the law that requires every american to buy health insurance. >> the court, you know, validated a law that was clearly constitutional. i'm proud to be an american today. >> the justices did limit the laws expansion of insurance for the poor, ruling that the federal government cannot with hold a state's medicaid feweding if it -- funding if it does not participate. >> republicans are already

investigation into a botched gun tracking operation known as fast and furious. president obama has declared executive privilege over the documents in question. a spring of police scandals in baltimore is leading to questions over leadership, credibility and whether there's a pattern of bad behavior. wjz is live at city police head quarters. mike hellgren is there and has insight from the community as well as lawmakers. >> reporter: these troubling cases come at a critical time for the department in the misz of a transition -- midst of a transition at the top. >> several scandals are rocking the baltimore city police department, including two patrol charges abused over time, an officer who they claim shot himself. >> an interest to make that adjustment. . >> and the resignation of the director of police training brought in 6 months ago. add to

that officer bealefeld's retirement. sharon black has been here almost 40 years and is concerned the community is being shut out. >> we think it's outrageous, not just bad. it's also about policy. it's not just about the individual. we're looking at the whole package. >> there are a number of people in the community who support the current policing strategies and point to huge reduks -- reductions in the murder rate. >> one criminal justice expert said he does not see a pattern of corruption because these are isolated cases across many level offense the office. scandal erodes trust. >> i am concerned as many citizens are about what turmoil there may be. the men and women of the police department are decent, committed, caring individuals who need a police

commissioner that's going to restore confidence and trust and integrity into the police department. >> reporter: so what is the mayor saying about this? in short, nothing. her office said she was unavailable for comment and would not talk about personnel issues in the police department anyway. live at head quarters, mike hellgren. >> thank you. police have said in the past that these cases illustrate their push to root out corruption. a man admits to a shooting incident at a state park. jessica kartalija is live in the news room. >> reporter: a man fired several shots at a group of kayakers. michael hamilton fired his weapon as the kayakers practiced maneuvers in front of his house. one of the bullets hit the water near the group, forcing them to take cover and call police. when officers arrived they say hamilton admitted to the shooting. he

was upset the previous visitors had been littering his property with trash. he didn't intend to hurt anyone. >> thank you. ham ililton is charged with assault and wreckless endangerment. the city lost about 1,500 people in the a months after the 2010 u.s. census. that places baltimore's population around 619,000. the populations of boston, seattle and denver have all surpassed baltimore's. we're days away from the 4th of july holiday. triple a said traffic will be worse as more people plan to travel by car. wjz is live along the beltway. row which he will richie speaks with drivers. >> reporter: according to triple a, a majority of people have already hit the road. more are expected to leave tomorrow. >> the gas tanks are full. the

interstates are busy with holiday travelers. >> the trip has been pretty pleasant so far. >> rest areas are buzzing with traveling from connecticut, virginia and florida. his friend and their two dogs thought it was a good time to test out the new rv. the group is traveling from orlando to cape code. >> it has been busy, crowded in the carolinas. >> not surprising the triple a who predicts 25% of people driving will leave tomorrow. >> 86% of md ders or -- of marylanders or 725,000 people will be taking to the roads. >> reporter: they're also going a greater distance. they're traveling 155 miles more than last year. >> the new numbers show an increase of more than 5% of people traveling by car for the holiday. >> that's about 846,000 marylanders that will be driving. >> the growing number of people

it is sunny, t -- 9 #r5 in central md -- 95 in central maryland. wjz is following breaking news involving the son of city state attorney greg bern steen. police were called to scott street in west baltimore this morning. city police say two individuals had serious cuts to their hands. they were taken to shock trauma and released. after police were called to the scene they determined that owen bernstein and another man cut themselves intensal. hundreds of homes are now

destroyed from colorado's wild fires. a mandatory evacuation remains in effect. randall pinkston reports from colorado springs. >> flames race. >> these are the flames after they jumped the canyon. they didn't think this was going to happen. >> not that fast. >> fuel led by 50 mile an hour winds the fire swept into the area so fast they only had 15 minutes to evacuate. >> i'm amazed that nobody got killed. it was like everybody got out safe. >> the fire has charred more than 18,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes. 1,000 firefighters are battling the blaze. they are hoping cooler temperatures and lighter winds will help them gain ground. >> we have the horsepower in place. we're going to go after it aggressively. >> an air convoy of helicopters is an important part of the battle. we've seen at least 10

choppers dropping flame retardant material to stop the fire from spreading. >> frustration is growing. most don't know if they're homes are lost. >> it's horrible. it's bad. you know, i have everything in there. >> authorities are taking time with notifications because they don't want unnecessary heart ache. >> people impacted by this are already going through enough pain and anguish. we have to get this right. >> the cause of the fire is still undetermined. officials say it's still too dangerous to investigate. in colorado springs, randall pinkston. >> president obama will be in colorado tomorrow to survey the damage and thank firefighters. if you're waiting for somebody to get home from work. let's check in on the roads. here is christy ty breslin line -- christy breslin live at traffic control. >> the inner loop is just crawling along. the west side inner loop also heavy from south western pilots with -- south

football practice out there, i believe with laurel. correct? yes. excuse me, cal burr hall. wrong school . tomorrow and any other day coming up this weekend it's going to be too much for people to be doing that outside in the afternoon. early morning, yeah. at night, okay. not in the afternoon. it's just going to be too hot and too humid and too tough on the body. let's take a look at temperatures right now. today was hot but it's very, very dry. that dry, low humidity makes it feel cooler than the temperature. 95 feels like 92 because the dew point is only 52. 84 the actual temperature. ocean city at 89, elkin 90, 92 westminster, 94 by the bay annapolis and kent island, 91 rock hall. we have a west wind. tomorrow more of a southwest

wind. what happens when you get that. down from the mountains, the wind comes down the mountains and they tend to dry out, which is a good thing but it tends to raise the temperature up a couple of degrees. the dew point is going to be the key to tomorrow. i think the dew point tomorrow is going to be in the low to mid 60s, which means 98, 99 could feel like 102, 103 by tomorrow afternoon. certainly a lot worse than this afternoon. we're only in the low 90s right now. to the west and north. there are some clouds and the chance of a couple thunderstorms that are moving through the great lakes with a front. it could be in our region tomorrow afternoon, maybe even as early as the morning. if we do get the shower activity it will raise the humidity but may keep temperatures down a tad. most of the east just clear and hot. right now fort reign, indiana 105, chicago 99, st. louis 107.

with the clouds and some sun, we'll be very humid tomorrow, probably upper 90s, some spots at 100. there will be a chance of a shower. in fact, all through the weekend there will be a chance. bay temperature around 76 degrees. i'll take that too. tonight down to 71. a few upper 60s. maybe a thunderstorm late tonight, tomorrow morning and then partly sunny, very hot and humid afternoon. the real humidity comes back in the afternoon. 99 will feel like 102, 103 by this time tomorrow afternoon. ocean city upper 80s, not too bad. mostly sunny skies at the beach. that wouldn't be a bad place to be. >> perfect for ocean stay. thank s s. -- for ocean city. thank s s. another black eye for the

it is 5:30, 95 degrees and sunny. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some stories people are talking at tonight. it takes something really big to change a skyline. that's exactly what's happening to the port of baltimore. alex reports four cranes that barely fit under the bay and key bridges are about to climb higher. >> using a tug boat two with years ago -- 2 years ago the governor announced the port of baltimore will be growing to grow jobs. >> it's going to support 2,700 permanent jobs to handle the increased container traffic. >> last week the steel backbone barely fit under the bay bridge. four big cranes built in china on the way to handle a new generation of gigantic cargo ships. >> that puts the port of baltimore in a competitive

position. >> one of the cranes will move on to the pier on temporary rails. to get an idea of the size which will move containers between ships and trucks, it takes something to give it scale, something the size of us. at 40 stories tall, they will dwarf existing cranes. >> it's going to sustain the port and allow it to grow into the feature. >> these -- into the future. >> these will mean jobs behind the port. bigger ships will be unloading more containers, more trucks and drivers will be needed. >> absolutely, i think it's a great idea. anything to improve the economy, improve jobs for people is definitely what we need to get the economy going to where it needs to be. >> things are definitely looking way up. >> ports america whichchesapeake which run s the port has invested over $100 million. the tsa comes down hard on eight screeners at the newark

airport in new jersey. >> reporter: the tsa says the eight employees were observed sleeping or violating other procedures in a baggage room in december. they say the eight screeners were suspended immediately after the incident. the tsa would not reveal how many of the firings were for sleeping on the job. the employees were video taped by cameras. there were reports the tsa is investigating reports of supervisors asleep in front of monitors to check for explosives or other threats. >> the union plans to appeal it. the former neighborhood watch captain charged with killing trayvon martin will be back in court tomorrow. george zimmerman will have a second bond hearing after having his bail revoked last month. >> george zimmerman will ask the judge for bail a second time. his bond was revoked after prosecutors say he and his wife misled the court about the

$135,000 they had in the bank. >> there was no evidence to suggest an intent or plan to deceive the court. >> since zimmerman's last hearing new video has been released that shows him the day after he shot 17-year-old trayvon martin telling investigators what happened. >> he said do you have problem. i said, no, i don't have a problem. >> zimmerman claims the unarmed teenager attacked him. he said he tried to get away and was screaming for help but martin noticed a gun under his jacket. >> i felt his arm going down to my side. i grabbed it and i shot one time. >> zimmerman also passed two lie detector tests the day after the shooting. >> his attorney will ask the judge to set bond at $150,000, the original amount that was set before zimmerman was sent back to jail. >> he wants out. he wants to be out and free. i think he should be to help me get ready for the trial and defense.

>> zimmerman is charged with second degree murder and has pleaded not guilty claiming ing self-defense. trayvon martin's family says he should stay in custody. >> zimmerman's wife has been charged with making a false statement. a security scare at one of the nation's busiest sea ports turns out to be a false alarm. it started when workers heard knocking coming from a container. they feared people were inside hiding in the ship. federal investigators haven't uncovered any stow aways. the ship began its voyage in the united air waives. scary moments for me pedestrians -- for pedestrians. a crane lifting a beam when the load shifting it. the fire department says no one was hurt. the incident comes just one day

after a worker was seriously hurt in a fall. new york city is still considered the number one terror target in america. one of the biggest potential threats is an attack by sea. jessica kartalija looks at the newest tool to protect the city. >> the brand new $10 million helicopters was delivered from tennessee to an airfield in brooklyn. it's job is to keep a nuclear bomb out of new york city. it can detect a radiation signature from an altitude of 200 feet. >> the nice thing about the aerial capability is you're more mobile, you can hit different air -- areas and do it faster. i think we've come up with a very robust system that has a large sensor. >> it's the very latest tool in new york city's counterterrorism arsenal and another sign of how

critical hol kepters have become -- helicopters have become. >> we're looking at the critical infrastructure of new york city, the symbolic buildings. is there anything out of place, suspicious, anything we didn't see the day before that has now changed. >> normal police helicopters patrol might focus on the commercial areas or over the water for a rescue. >> maybe with unusual activity, numerous people messing around with something. it looks unusual. >> the counterterrorism patrol executed several times a day by the nwpd takes -- nypd takes them off the beaten path. >> the counterterrorism patrol also conducts daily surveillance on what is known as the buck eye pipeline. it carries millions of gallons of fuel to be discontributed to airports. time for a quick look at some of the stories that you'll find in tomorrow morning's

as we get closer to the 4th of july fire works are staged. the state fire marshall is reminding you that most fire works are illegal in maryland. in many cases they're also dangerous. >> fire works are beautiful. some can be dangerous. these are illegal. so are these m-80s and quarter sticks. >> they try to pick up that fire cracker that was a dud. you're bending over, trying to reach down and pick it up, it goes off. >> these fire works are legal, ground space sparklers are legal in many places but not baltimore city. >> because they are dangerous. you know , they look benign, but they -- the fire that's created by a sparkler is very, very hot. >> nationwide 40% of the fire works related injuries are to children under the age of 15. >> especially the younger kids

dehumidifier. back inside. >> thank you . heavy rain triggers a mud slide in china. it leaves 38 workers and two residents missing. it happened at the construction site of a hydro power station. authorities released a national level emergency e response to the mud -- response to the mud slide. a huge explosion rocks syria's capitol. a bomb destroyed dozens of cars and injured several people outside syria's justice department. it's not clear who launched that assault. it comes as tension builds at the border are turkey. world -- borders with turkey. world legaleders will meet -- leaders will meet to end the experience. jerry sandusky could keep his penn state pension. the former assistant football coach is still receiving his
