downtown, 98 dc, 94 elkin, 81 towards oakland. 81 seems to be the cool spot on the map. we do have 90s around the region. 90 in westminster and bel air and rock hall, 91 in annapolis and on kent island. let's talk about the watches and warnings. it feels more like 102. the low 100s around much of central maryland. we have excessive heat warnings in effect for parts of the area down to the southwest. we have a watch in effect for much of the area around central maryland. we have a heat advisory from most of the area from washington county and down the eastern shore. what is that going to mean for us the last few days and the last weekend of june? sending it out to marty bass. >> reporter: i'm going to show you something that screams of irony. let's start off with a graphic. our weather isn't changing tomorrow.

we still stay in this steammy flow. i want to show you the temperatures through the weekend. keep in mind the heat index, how uncomfortable it is is a function of temperature and humidity. let's take a look at the next three days -- well, next two days. today 103 with heat index of more than likely maybe 107, 108. you see that 98 tomorrow. it looks cooler but the humidity is going to be higher. we may be dealing with the exact same heat index. remember, it's a function of temperature and humidity. sunday the mid 90s but heat index values over 100. we're going to cool down into the mid 90s as we move towards july 4th. tim williams will have all those details shortly. now back inside. >> thank you. our first warning weather coverage continues now with mike

hellgren live at the park pool. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. you can relevant really feel the humidity out here today. park pools like this one will be open until 8 o'clock tonight. it just opened at noon. we'll start seeing people in there shortly. cooling centers are open from ann arundel county towards hartford county and in between as people try to cope with the rising temperatures. >> baltimore is baking at the start of what could be the longest heat waive of the year. it's a struggle to cool down outside with people migrating to the water from the inner harbor to the patterson park pool, one of many with extended hours to the annapolis city doc and the chesapeake bay. the danger from these temperatures is real. this kind of heat could send you to the hospital. >> chest pain, shortness of breath, but typically it will start with milder things, like

latest at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. a hearing is underway in sanford, florida to decide if george zimmerman will be allowed to post bond and leave jail. he is charged in the murder of trayvon martin whose death set off protests all across this country. >> george zimmerman shook hands with one of his attorneys and entered a packed courtroom for his second bond hearing. a judge is considering whether to set a new bond for zimmerman after revoking it. prosecutors say zimmerman and his wife misled the court about money they collected through an online account. the defense called a financial expert who testified about how much the fund collected. >> the net total funds was $197,567.97. >> where did they go? >> they transferred into the bank account. >> the witness testify that the majority of the money was transferred to a legal defense

fund. zimmerman's attorney said he didn't mean to mislead the court and his bond should be reinstated. >> assuming you were shelly zimmerman transferring it -- >> prosecutors want zimmerman to remain behind bars. he spent a total of 38 days in jail. that includes the time when he was first arrested and taken into custody again. the former neighborhood watch volunteer is charged with second degree murder in the killing of trayvon martin. zimmerman claims the unarmed 17-year-old attacked him. if zimmerman is released his lawyer says he'll be taken to an undisclosed location for his own safety. the defense team says the case won't go to trial until at least next spring. >> the defense called a firefighter and emt to the stand. both of them treated zimmerman the night of the incident. they say almost half of zimmerman's head and face were covered in blood because of the injuries he sustained in his altercation with martin. the president will be in

colorado today to survey damage from the most destructive wild fire in the state's history. at least one person is dead, another missing as a result of the fire in colorado springs. flames have charred more than 18,000 acres, destroying more than 350 homes. more than 30,000 people are under evacuation orders. they fear it could be mid july before the flames are under control. a search is on for a missing worker after a roof collapse. 25 workers were in the building, all of them got out one worker is still unaccounted for. rescuers had to stop searching because the building is crumbling. the july 4th holiday is right around the corner. a record number of marylanders are expected to celebrate away from home. ron matz is in the news room with more. good afternoon >> reporter: the holiday isn't

until wednesday. triple a is predicting the highest increase in travel in more than a decade. 846,000 will travel at least 50 miles from home. the majority will drive with 25% of the drivers hitting the road today. lower gas prices and minimal summer road construction are contributing to a 5% bufferin in over all -- bump in all over travel. air travel is expected to increase by more than 10% and account for 8% of all holiday travel. scombres ka, back -- jessica, back to you. >> triple a says more people are traveling because the holiday falls in the middle of the week. the political battle is heating up again. the supreme court upheld president obama's health care over haul legislation. they decided it was constitutional. that has given republicans a new talking point. they are now calling the president's health care reform act a tax increase in disguise.

complete forecast is coming up. an investigation is underway into a shooting at ft. bragg. a soldier opened fire and killed a senior officer and then tried to kill himself. the shooter is in custody hospitalized with serious injuries. a motive has not been determined. the younger brother of bernie madolff is in custody. he's expected to plead guilt in the scheme. he is the former chief compliance officer at the private investment arm of his brother's business. bernie madolff was sentenced to 159 years in prison in 2009. interest rates for new student loans are set to double on sunday. the house of representatives will likely vote on a bill today that will extend the current rate of 3.4% instead. it's part of the same

the state. the dew point is 70. it's deft initely a function of the heat, the dew point, humidity that gives you that temperature on your skin. 97 with 70 z a dew point -- with 70 as a dew point, anything over 60 or 65 gets tropical. the only thing is that the winds are from the north and northwest. when they start to shift to the west and southwest our temperatures shoot up. 98 at the sign center, 84 in oakland, 94 cumberland. that northwest flow around much of the state. we did have a few showers and storms roll through here across the top tier of the state early in the morning. we had the thunderstorms, they started to clip the top edge of the area, move on across. now we have a few clouds out there. for the most part the thunderstorm potential has cleared the area at least for right now.
