6:02 pm
tracking another developing storms. but first, let's begin with the latest on the power outages. this is just awful timing considering it's such a hot weekend. >> reporter: very bad timing indeed. just by driving around the county, it's very easy to see just how much damage this storm caused. right now we're in woodlawn and there are trees down all across this neighborhood. around 500,000 customers lost service last night and they say it's going to be a while before service is restored. a massive cleanup is underway in baltimore county after heavy winds and rain pounded neighborhoods across the region. >> a lot of winds, a lot of trees falling. very scary. >> reporter: in woodlawn, hurricanelike winds took out power lines and trees that in turn crushed whatever was in their path. >> the crash was just like a boom, just like something fell out of the sky really.
6:03 pm
>> reporter: this is what rene heard. somewhere underneath this giant tree are the remains of her neighbor's house. falling limbs split in two, trapping the owner inside. the woman ended up suffering head trauma and broken bones. the house is now condemned. and as if dealing with all this damage wasn't enough, these homeowners are also part of the hundreds of thousands of people who don't have any power. >> it really took a beating on our system. >> reporter: bge says the storm knocked out service to more than 500,000 customers. so today all hands are on deck at the utility. but because the severity of this storm wasn't expected, the restoration process is going to be lengthy. >> we're making progress. but at the end of the day, there are going to be customers that are going to be out of service for several days going into next week. >> reporter: until then, neighbors are focused on cleaning up this mess and
6:04 pm
finding a cool place to stay. >> they do the best they can do. i mean, you know, it's just something that nobody can anticipate. we don't have any control over it. >> reporter: bge says that an additional 400 linemen are coming into maryland to help with the cleanup and the restoration process, but, again, it's going to be several days, well into next week, they say, before all service is restored. reporting live, wjz eyewitness news. >> it will take a couple of days for them to get down here. bge now says they have restored power to 150,000 folks. but here are the current numbers. more than 113,000 without power in baltimore county. and in anne arundel county, a total of 405,000 people in the dark. and that is just bge. more extensive outages out in the d.c. area. the numbers there are more than a million people in the region currently in the dark.
6:05 pm
our complete coverage continues right now with meteorologist bernadette woods. she has the latest on another possible storm. and also, we need to talk about last night's storm, because it was really just incredible. i heard someone comparing it to like a category 1 hurricane. >> winds were that high. category 1. here is the line as it just crosses the entire region, sparing no one. and this is why we try to stress the severe thunderstorm warnings, you don't necessarily need the twisting motion with tornadoes. you can still get the damage. that's the line of storms as it plowed through here last night. so much lightning, so much wind. and then it continued over to the eastern shore and those winds starting to die down a little bit, but we've got another round of potential thunderstorms. but the problem today, not just with the downed power lines and power outages but people aren't getting a break from the heat with all of that going on. inside those homes, you don't
6:06 pm
have the power to kick up some air or a fan. it is really roasting. 91 is what we're down to. and we do still have a heat advisory in effect till 9:00 tonight. it will likely be extended for the next couple of days. there's a chance for a couple of thunderstorms as we head through the evening. nothing like yesterday. but with the heat around tomorrow, again we have the threat for severe weather. we'll have a lot more on this coming up. that storm hit fast and hard in many communities. our first warning coverage continues with mike in west baltimore. that's where people are struggling to cope with the aftermath. >> reporter: the furious rain and wind howled in the darkness. huge gusts toppled trees like match sticks and ripped houses apart, sending people running for cover. >> it's pretty wicked. >> reporter: and in the
6:07 pm
daylight, the damage was clear. ray was at a loss for words. >> there's no words to explain that. none at all. i definitely wasn't expecting this, not even in the short run. >> you're kind of in shock? i'm still in shock. i didn't even want to come out here this morning. but i look at what could have happened. i could have been in the car at the time. >> reporter: his neighbor now has no power. and his son has nightmares. >> he's terrified. >> reporter: for many here, this surprise storm has tested their patience and their faith. and they can't forget what they saw, what they heard. >> i was just sitting out on my front porch and next thing i know, it's lightning, thundererring, winds blowing hard. it actually sounded like a
6:08 pm
freight train going by. four bolts of lightning hit this area back to back. >> reporter: thankfully, in this neighborhood at least, it did not cost any lives. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. we've got an update on the water situation. water is currently being restored to residents in northwest baltimore city and northwest baltimore county. last night the storm walked out water to the pike heights area, pleasant hills, pretty much up and down that corridor. people in those areas are being urged to conserve water, because they are turning it on right now, and they want to make sure that the system is up and running fully for everyone. so don't just turn on all your faucets right now. they're slowly getting that restored. the aftermath of the storm also wreaking havoc in ohio, washington d.c. and virginia. more people have been killed from the storms in those
6:09 pm
regions. danielle nottingham reports from hard-hit washington, d.c. >> reporter: powerful storms downed trees and ripped roofs across buildings across the mid- atlantic united states. >> the wind came in from the southwest. >> reporter: forecasters say storms with hurricane-force winds left a path of destruction. the wind ripped the siding off buildings and took down power lines, leaving more than three million people without electricity. officials have declared a state of emergency in virginia and here in washington, d.c. power may not be restored for days in some areas and temperatures could hit triple digits sunday. trees are blocking roads throughout the district of columbia, making travel difficult. and nearby, falls church, virginia, residents woke up to trees on their cars and homes. >> crash, boom. house shook. and came outside, and this is
6:10 pm
it. >> reporter: in bethesda, there is damage all around the golf course at congressional country club. tiger woods and other pga players are in the third round of the at&t national there. play was delayed almost six hours on saturday. and tournament officials banned spectators because of danger conditions around the course. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. so here's a breakdown of the storm. this is the current information we have right now. two people were killed here in maryland. more deaths in d.c. more than 400,000 people are without power right now, just bge customers alone. also, a lot of downed power lines are littering streets. be careful tonight if you decide to take a walk, especially as night falls. it is very dangerous out there. stay with wjz for first warning coverage of the storm and on

a school bus monitor in upstate new york are now paying a high price for it tonight. a lot of people saw that video there. the 7th graders have now been suspended from their middle school for a year. in addition, they're also going to have to do 50 hours of community service and complete a formal program in bullying presence, respect and responsibility. meteorologist bernadette woods is here right now. what made this storm so unusual last night? for me, when i was watching it, i could not believe how much lightning there was. it was like -- >> it will 103 yesterday. the dew points were in the 70's. when you have a front coming into that kind of an air mass, it's just that much extra fuel for the fire. it was a strong storm coming through and a really strong jet stream that just kicked up those kinds. >> so these are straight-line
6:19 pm
winds that caused this damage? >> yes. >> so you don't need a tornado warning. >> we do have a couple of showers out there this evening. there's some thunderstorms off to our south, so we're going to show you outside right now, hot in baltimore city, as people try to recover. there is a lot more ,,,,,,,,,,,,

6:21 pm
welcome back, everybody. now, we're not seeing as much as we did yesterday on the radar. but look at this strong line of thunderstorms off to the south. for maryland, it may pass to parts in the southern and eastern shore. not what we saw yesterday, but down to our south, there's another round just getting started. we'll show you that this is what we've been dealing with today. just a couple of showers out there. that's about it. so fortunately, we're not getting the damage we had yesterday, but tomorrow, again the chance for strong to maybe even severe storms. this time it is focused off to the south.
6:22 pm
this is going to continue for the next couple of days. the other part of it is the heat. with all these power outages, this is becoming even more of an issue. we have heat advisories in effect. right now it's 91 outside. the dew points have come down since yesterday. and we did manage a high. it made it feel a little bit hotter out there, but our high today was only 94, compared to 103 yesterday. but we all know that's still hot. temperatures are going back up from there again tomorrow. take a look at this picture. it is not just us. there is so much heat over the country. record highs being broken right and left. this is going to continue to move in our direction. now, in the northern side of that, and that's not far from us, that's the quarter for the strong to severe storms for the next few afternoons. this is a daily thing that we'll have to watch. because the fuel is out there, and that's the pattern that we're locked in. we see a couple of those
6:23 pm
showers off to our north, firing up a little bit farther to our south. generally in the area there is that chance of storms and it's going to continue again on monday and then you see there's another front going to take that same pattern, tuesday into wednesday. so the forecast looks like this. on the water, not much of a wind. so the wind tomorrow, five to ten knots. we go down to about 73 tonight. a chance for a couple of thunderstorms to fire up out there but not to the extent of yesterday. tomorrow, chance of thunderstorms. , we're back up to 90 degrees. the next front will be approaching on tuesday. less coverage of thunderstorms but that starts to pick up once again wednesday into thursday. look at these highs. already four days in a row of 90-plus degrees. that is going to continue. >> it's going to be an uncomfortable week for all the people without air conditioning. >> a little uncomfortable for
