southern summer storms. lightning, driving rain, and wind gusts. a monster storm slams into maryland. tonight, the devastation and the power problems affecting hundreds of thousands. >> we have a lot of new updates and video tonight. i'm adam may. that storm turns deadly for 2 people in beyond when trees come crashing down on them. in silver spring, 15eu7-year- old womb was killed when this oak tree slammed into her bedroom. and a man died when a tree fell on the car he was driving.

over 2500 people have been displaced in these units. and a barn, just completely collapsed under the pressure of the whipping winds. luckily, no one was hurt here, but the structure is a complete loss. wjz is live with extensive coverage. we're that debt -- bernadette woods is live, but let's start with monique. >> reporter: trees are taking out power lines. statewide, nearly 1 million people lost power, and that led the govern tore declare a state of emergency. >> reporter: a massive cleanup underway in baltimore county after heavy winds and rain

pelted the neighborhood. >> very scary. >> reporter: hurricane-like wintdz took out power lines and trees that in turn crushed whatever was in their tracks. >> the crash was like a boom, like something fell out of the sky. >> reporter: this is what renie mills heard. somewhere underneath this tree are the remain of her neighbor's house. falling limbs nearly split it in 2 and trapping the neighbor inside. >> reporter: the neighbor suffered head trauma and broken bones. >> reporter: the house is condemned. and as if dealing with this damage wasn't enough, these homeowners are part of the 500,000 that lost power. >> we have trees down calls to gong in and verifying that there's wires that are sparking. >> reporter: bge says the

restoration process will be lengthy. >> there are customers that will be out of service for several days. >> reporter: the governor spoke out about the outages. >> this is tedious work. it is time-consuming work. >> reporter: until power is restored, neighbors are focused on cleaning up and finding a cool place to stay. >> it's something nobody can anticipate. >> reporter: bge says an additional 600 linemen are coming in from various states to help local crews, but it will again be several days before power is restored. >> it will be a real test of paishts. we have the latest numbers in from bge. let's look at them. more than 97,000 people are still without power in baltimore county. they're making good progress in prince george's county.

a total of 360,000 people, just bge customers, are without power. our complete coverage continues with bernadette woods. she has the late e-on more storms -- the latest on more storms that could be heading our way. >> we're going to play this again. that was a line that came through, covering the entire state and sparing no area. as it passed through, that's where we saw the biggest wind gusts. and they continued over to the eastern shore. wind gusts over 0eu miles per hour with this storm. let's show you. we have some points we want to hit. over 70 miles per hour winds. we were talking ab this earlier. 74 miles per hour is a category 1 hurricane, so we were at that level with this storm. people have been talking about

the word doracio. they is k level houses. we can see what they can do. the other thing, the threat of more thunderstorms as we head through the week. another one is coming our way, and tomorrow, even in our area, we will see this heat continue and temperatures will remain up. with the power outages, that will be an issue. dew point's up to 79 degrees, and we have a heat index of 92- degrees in d.c. this is where most of the thunderstorms have been forced today, just down to our south. lower parts of the eastern shore have gotten in on some of that. there's still another complex just south of us. adam? >> bernadette's on top of that. that storm hit fast and hard. in many communities, it had a devastating impact. mike helgren reports from west

baltimore where people are still coping with the aftermath. glrt furious rain and wind howled in the darkness. huge gusts toppled trees like matchsticks and tore some houses apart, sending people running for cover. >> i never saw this type of wind before. it's pretty wicked. >> reporter: and in the daylight, the damage was clear. ray barns' chevy was a loss, putting him at a loss for words. >> there's no words tings plain that. none at all. i definitely wasn't expecting this, not even in the short run. >> reporter: you're in shock? >> i'm still in shock. i look at what could have happened. i could have been in the car at the time. >> reporter: his neighbor now has no power, and a son who has nightmares. >> he was terrified. he was looking out the window, and it looked like the lightning was right next door. >> reporter: for many, this

surprise storm has tested their patience and their faith. >> reporter: and they can't forget what they saw and what they heard. >> i was just sitting out on my front porch, and next thing i know, it's lightning, thundering, win blowing really hard. it sounded like a freight train coming by. four bolts of lightning hit this area and took out a few good trees and some telephone poles. >> reporter: thankfully in this neighborhood at least, it didn't cost any lives. >> this fierce summer storm also struck ohio, virginia, and washington, d.c. danielle nottingham reports on the other hard-hit areas. >> reporter: forecasters say hurricane force winds left a path of destruction from the midwest to the 'coast friday into saturday. >> apparently, the wind came in

from the southwest, completely took this part of the building off, landed in the parking lot about 300 feet away. >> reporter: more than 3 million people lost power, and now crews are working around the clock to get the electricity back on. >> reporter: officials have declared a tallet of emergency here in virginia and in washington, d.c. power may not be restored for days in some areas. and temperatures could hit triple dujts on sunday. >> reporter: in nearby falls church, virginia, reds dents woke up to freeway on their cars and homes. >> big crash, boom, house shook. and outside, this was it. >> reporter: authorities athe cleanup -- authorities say the cleanup from this powerful storm will take days. >> back here in baltimore, we were dealing with a water outage issue. we have an update on that. water is being restored to residents in northwest

baltimore city and northwest baltimore county. last night's storm knocked down trees that knocked out part of the sanitation system. people in those areas tonight are still being urged to conserve water. >> it takes a lot of time to refill those tanks, so people who start getting water in the southern part of the system, areas like pikesville, they need to refrain from using that water. >> that's kurt cokier with bpw. he expects everything will be back in order tomorrow morning. the power problems also forced several businesses to close, including lots of gas stations in maryland, people having to hit one after another gas station that were shut down. i heard of one gas station that had a 20 minute wait for gas

today, 70 cars in line at one time. all day long, viewers have been sharinging incredible videos and pictures of the storm. here's a look at more of them. >> reporter: incredible lightning and scary winds lead to widespread storm damage on the streets of maryland like this one. some trees fell on homes. this homeowner was asleep when a huge tree crashed into his bedroom roof. a viewer sent us this picture of what used to be her deck. dan privett sent us these pictures of another tree uprooted, and from this angle you can see how massive it is. in this case, a branch was speared through a windshield. and the homeowner who posted this video on youtube was left wondering how he was going to get out of his neighborhood. >> two people have been killed in maryland, 750,000 people are

first, our complete coverage of the weather will continue. monique has an updaten at power outages. >> reporter: the storm originally knocked out power to more than 500 ,000 homes. bge said it will be several days before everything is restored. baltimore city and baltimore county residents spent most of the morning cleaning up the massive amount of damage left behind. trees crushed countless cars and homes. we did speak to bge about these outages. >> we're making progress, but there will be customers that will be out of service for several days going into next week. >> reporter: we do have the very latest numbers from bge, and they show nearly 370,000 people are still without power tonight. back to you, adam. >> and you add in everybody in d.c. and on the eastern show

with there's more than 700,000. thanks so much. stay with wjz for the latest on these power outages. we'll continue to update you with more information. hundreds of people finally heading home as crews gained some ground on that massive wildfire in colorado. evacuation orders were lifted in woodland park after waldo canyon fire broke out. it's burned more than 17,000 acres and killed one person. some stunning new e-mails tonight suggest several penn state officials could have been involved in a cover-up to protect jerry sandusky. the school's former president and vice president were ready o report sandusky for his alleged shower incident with a boy in 2001 but agreed to keep quite talking with joe paterno. the e-mail suggested that the school could be vulnerable if it was exposed.

the students that bullied a bus monitor in new york are paying a pretty high price for it tonight. the 7th graders have been suspended from their middle school for an entire year. in addition, they'll have to do 50 hours of community service with senior citizens. they also have to complete a formal program in bullying prevention, respect, and responsibility. : crabbers are reporting a dramatic shortage in their catches this season. many restaurants are scrambling to cover demand. gigi has more on what's causing the short fall. >> reporter: this is the season for crabs and customers to flood jessie allowers' crab shack. the customers are coming. the crab, no so much. >> there's a shortage, and you have to order crabs early for that reason. >> reporter: that's what he's telling his customers, order early, especially with the 4th

of july holiday coming up in the next few days. >> coming up on the july 4 weekend, everybody wants crabs. >> reporter: lynn bagley is with the department of natural resources. she confirms the shortage. one reason for it, the warm spring, which caused a widespread craving for crustaceans. >> the big crabs, the adult crabs, there are fewer of them now, because they've been fished on. >> reporter: over the winter, the department of natural resources surveyed the number of crabs in the bay. they found a record number of crabs, but many of them are juveniles. that's also factoring into the shortage. >> off these very young crabs in the bay to start the season, it won't be until late summer or fall when they glow to a size when they can be harvested. >> reporter: a time when the customers can enjoy the crabs

and the prices. i'm gigi barnett, wjz news. >> it's the crabbers north of the bay bridge that are seeing the shortage. bernadette woods, tell me about this doraco. is it a fancy term for straightline winds? >> is t pretty much is, like last year, haboob came up with the sand storm. there was a big storm with a lot of wind damage moreso down toward d.c., and that word came up. these weren't twisting winds, they were strightline winds. >> but they're just as powerful. >> that's why we stress to please take cover. a couple of showers have popped up out there. >> and it was hot. >> yes, it was hot once again.

more thunderstorms were off to the south of us. there's a front stalled out in our region. it will meed anker off to the -- meander off to the north. with this kind of heat around, we'll see a chance for shower and thunderstorms each and every afternoon. tomorrow, the best chance for severe weather will be just off to the south of baltimore here. it's still in our area. it won't be as widespread, but still that chance for severe weather. if you're heading out on the bay, just have some sort of device, whether it's your phone or something nearby, so you may get a thunderstorm in your area, can you text to see if it is severe. we'll keep you updated on that. 79-degrees -- 79 degrees is where we are. we have a heat indetection still at 11:00 at night -- index still at 11:00 at night.

these 90s will continue. this is the fourth day at or above 90 degrees. this will stretch into next weekend. it's 91 in salt lake city right now, a lot of 90s covering almost the entire middle section of the country. this is where the jet stream will be, so that will be the corridor for thunderstorms, and it's just near us. there's another front that will come our way over the next couple of days, and it will keep that chance of shower and thunderstorms around. and there is a chance for something to become severe. here's the next front moving our way. on the water, other than any thunderstorms, 5 to 10 knots, bay temp at 78 degrees, still a thunderstorm or two around that will be dying down overnight. that will be leaving us.
