the monster storm that hit maryland, two people are dead and hundreds of thousands more are still without power. sky chopper 13 is over towson. crews have work left to do on the ground. the effects of the hurricane force winds that came through here, hundreds of trees fell and broke power lines all around the state leaves hundreds of thousands of homes in the dark and without air-conditioning. the strong winds sent a couple of pine trees crashing the fence. wjz is live with extensive first weather warning coverage. we will be checking in with chopper 13 more in a moment. first mike hellgren is live with more. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. it's been frustrating for a lot of people. this is a block without power. you can see there's still a tree that blocks

wadsw orth. you can see how powerful the storms were. it snapped this tree down. there are now 26,000 utility workers trying to get the power become on, some from canada and texas. >> hundreds of thousands of people are still without power after the fierce fast moving storm to through maryland friday night. >> it's just one of those things. it's inconvenient. there are people in worst shape. >> it's mother nature doing what she does. you have to grin and bear it and make the best of it. >> bge has restored more than 400,000 customers. >> this is going to extend into this coming weekend. beyond that, we're being very careful not to set any false expectations. >> this storm had all of time

packet of a hurricane without the warning time that a hurricane would typically give to us. >> gusts of winds hit more than 70 miles an hour, sending trees slamming into cars and homes. >> i look at what could have happened. i could have been in the car. >> it came in through the roof are. there was water coming in -- through the roof. there was water coming in. >> right now power crews are are coming in from out of state to help local workers who have been on the clock all weekend. there's still a massive amount of work that must be done. >> reporter: you can see it right here live in northeast baltimore, still a lot of trees down, a lot of power light -- sorry traffic signals that are out. many people don't understand that you have to treat those as a four-way stop. we've seen several accidents on our way over here this morning. several of those lights are being powered by generators, but not all of them are working. it can be a slow go as you're trying to get through town.

if you need to report an outage, out bge any time you can. don't report the outage more than once. they only need to hear from you once and they've got that in their system. reporting live, mike hellgren. >> thank you. we want to update you now on the latest power outage numbers. more than 67,000 people are still without power in baltimore county, another 70,000 in baltimore city. in ann arundel county about 41,000 customers. all 230,000 are still waiting on crews to restore their power. some of the best views are from sky chopper 13. captain long, what do you see out there? >> reporter: what we're looking at here just south of towson is a sizable tree that's fallen and not been removed. we saw a

couple cars driving down the road. even though there's been some good damage and tangled phone lines the traffic is getting by. it's typical of what we've been seeing. most of the clean up is well underway. roads are looking good. we went all the way down to ann arundel county. reporting live, i'm cam tin -- captain jeff long. tim williams and bernadette woods have a lot more. were going to start with bernadette. >> good afternoon. we're going to start out with that loop from the storms that made their way through. this is a very strong line of thunderstorms, as we all well know. wind gusts over 70 miles per hour. that's equivalent to hurricane force winds. as it continued to the eastern shore, still a lot of problems, but it weakened as it headed out over the water. there was a lot of lightening in addition to all of the downed

power lines that caused some issues. one thing we're looking at for today, we're still locked in this pattern where a couple of different storms are going to move along this same path. we still have continued chances for showers and thunderstorms. nothing is looking like it will happen like friday night. wednesday there is a chance for severe weather. we will send it out to tim. >> reporter: the heat is the primary focus. let's talk about the temperatures. temperatures are already approaching 90. 84 out in cumberland. when you couple that with the dew point of just around 60, which is down a little bit which means the moisture is down a little, it doesn't feel quite as muggy. the heat index is actually pretty accurate. the temperature feels like a true 89. that's a good thing for

those dealing without the power. because we are just below the criteria for the advisory and warnings, the national weather service that has not issued an excessive heat warning for today. while it may be warm it's not going to be dangerously warm. we ask you to take heed to stay in the shade, do not over do it and please try to stay hydrated until we get through this stretch of heat. bernadette will have your complete forecast coming up in just a few moments. for now, back inside. >> thank you. the storm hit more than just maryland. the death toll has climbed to at least 17 after three people were killed in north carolina. more severe weather is in the forecast for the deep south and ohio valley. first warning weather coverage continues now with danielle nottingham. >> you -- utility crews are making critical facilities like hospitals and nursing homes their first priority. more than 200-0000 people are facing a

third day of sweltering heat and no electricity after friday night's storms knocked out power. widespread outages stretch from indiana to new jersey. >> were helping each other. there's -- we're helping each other. there's no air-conditioning, no light. >> residence are dents -- residents have been flocking to mauls to stay cool and charge phones. with hundreds of traffic lights still not working, federal and state employees have been encouraged to work from home today. massive towned trees block after block are complicating the effort to get back to normal. about a dozen homes on this street in silver spring, maryland have no water and no power and it could be days before they get it back. >> 11 p.m. on friday, july the 6th, that will represent restoration for the vast majority of our customers. >> forecasters say there's a chance of more thunderstorms

maryland. we didn't have as much severe weather as there was in ohio and kentucky. a lot of that moved down into virginia. still it's out there unfortunately. winds out of the northwest behind that system. that brought our dew points way down. even though it's going to be another hot one and the heat is going to continue, it's not quite as intensive as it has been. when we talk about the heat index it's the exact same as our temperature because the dew point is low today. it's 91 already in minneapolis. we've had 90s into denver and salt lake city. it continues to move our direction. through the weekend we're still going to be in at least the 90s each and every day. the humidity levels are going to start to climb once again. the other thing with this pattern, here is the jet scream. -- stream. it's bringing up the heat and directing storms. this afternoon a chance for a shower or thunderstorm. again tomorrow a chance for a shower or thunderstorm . with a lot of

heat it could become severe. more widespread severe weather isn't expected until wednesday the 4th. this front starting to weaken. here comes that next one. it's we understand that the front is going to come through. this is our best chance at another round of severe weather. it's going to be hot ahead of it. when that gets through here on thursday the heat is going to continue behind it. on wednesday already issued by the storm prediction center a slight risk for strong to severe storms. we will keep you updated. forecast looks like this for today, just the chance for an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. the chances have come down since early this morning. 68 tonight. tomorrow back up into the 90s. wait until you see the five day forecast. again the chance for a late day shower or thunderstorm tomorrow. >> when the power goes out we wear purple. >> that's our power color.
