talking about. repair crews along with dozens of crews from out of state continue to repair power outages. the down trees are continuing to be the biggest problem. crews are working hard trying to restore power. wjz is live with extensive -- extensive coverage. we're live with the help they're getting today. good afternoon, mike. >> good afternoon. it is a massive, military-like operation with all the people helping to restore power. a third of them not from maryland. >> reporter: maryland has been invaded. massive amounts of equipment are rolling out of this staging area. >> this is the best place for us to make sure they have everything they need to go out

on site. >> reporter: laundry and a mess hall. a thousand crews are here as big as this is, it's duplicate is out in the middle river. >> today is one of our biggest days where we have every single crew here in place. >> reporter: bge uses no larger distribution table than this, 32,000-volts, 11 snapped poles are tackled by an 11 man work crew. >> i don't know what they call it here, back home we call it overhead twisted cable. it's on the ground. >> reporter: your area may have told you days not from around here. he's 68 years old and retired once and looks forward to these massive restoration jobs. >> this is work we love to do and when somebody needs help we're happy to help. i don't come down here to chase

money. we come down because we feel we have an obligation to our profession and nobody else can do it. >> reporter: bge couldn't say how many customers will be restored. guest welcome to summer in maryland. >> it's hot for us. we're used to it. we workout doors every day 365 days a year. i'll take the heat over the cold any day. >> reporter: there are 3300 people in this temporary electrical army. 1300 from out of state and they'll be here until the job is done which may be as late as this weekend. wjz eyewitness news. back to you. >> some of those crews come from canada, florida, mississippi and oklahoma. we'd like to update you now. 50,000 homes are still without electricity and another 47,000 out in baltimore city and about

30,000 customers still do not have customers. in all 159,000 crews are waiting for power to be restored. our complete coverage continues with jeff long live in our chopper in baltimore county. how's it look? >> reporter: well, it looks like we have a lot of crews working down here. this is in the idolwood community and just in this neighborhood alone we've seen about five different crews working to repair the damaged lines and a lot of tree damage in this area. this is one of the areas that has one of the larger concentrations of power outages. we'll stick around to see what happens. reporting live, i'm captain jeff long. >> thank you. utility companies are struggling to get the lights and air conditioning back on for hundreds of thousands from the midwest to mid-atlantic. for some it's taking too long. danielle has the latest from

hard hit arlington, virginia. >> reporter: there is growing frustration over how quickly utility companies are restoring electricity in washington d.c. and its suburbs. in maryland, power lines are still lying in the street four days after the storm hits. >> we told them numerous times the wires are down and it's dangerous and we have kids and i can't believe they would leave downed wires. >> reporter: electricity is back on for more than a million people but almost 2 million others in seven states and d.c. are still sweltering with no power. utility companies say crews are working adds fast as possible. they're making headway here in arlington, virginia. trees are down everywhere but the company says they've restored power to 75% of their customers. >> this was a very atypical

storm. this was the largest nonhurricane storm we've had. >> reporter: in west virginia residents lined up for water and ice. a boil water advisory has been issued for the entire state. >> someone called and said they were giving water away here. it's 104 degrees in the shade in our house now. >> reporter: the storm is blamed for more than 20 deaths and there's concern there could be more as wallties in the heat. danielle, wjz eyewitness news. >> president obama declared federal emergencies notary public ohio -- emergencies in ohio and west virginia. >> today shaping up to be another hot one and our weather

coverage continues with marty in the out back. >> good afternoon don and everybody out there. we're not getting a break from the heat until at least next week. we're going to show you the current numbers. it's 92 degrees out there and 93 in d. c. one spot of relief in oakland at 77 degrees. the dew points aren't that high yet. the heat index is pretty similar to our temperature. as we head through the afternoon those temperatures are climbing. those dew points are going to start climbing and tomorrow more so and that continues at least into thursday for the peak of our heat. we have 90s forecast through the weekend. another thing going on still the chance for thunderstorms. we send it out to marty. >> reporter: good afternoon everybody. i have good news and bad news. let's go to first warning doppler radar. when you start to look up over the great lake states you see a cluster of thunderstorms and they are moving our way.

it is not impossible as it moved through the late afternoon into the evening hours. thunderstorms are moving across the mid-atlantic, that's the bad news. the good news is if we see some thunderstorms we may calm down this atmosphere, calm it down enough so that when the wind shift comes through tomorrow we may have the place set differently and may not have a dynamic for even stronger storms because right now believe it or not the strongest storms over the next 36 hours are listed for tomorrow afternoon. we may be seeing a change in your favor again. it's good news and bad news. the heat is going to be with us but we might lose a little bit of humidity. we continue that discussion during our first warning weather segment. i'm going to throw it back inside. >> marty, thank you. with the temperatures approaching triple digits again today the city is under a code

now your complete forecast and the first warning of severe weather. >> welcome back everybody. sunny and shiny and heating us up again. we're up to 92 degrees outside. the dew points are still in check. they're still pretty low but those are going to change over the next couple of days here. there's a few areas that may add a detree or -- degree or two. this heat is still not going anywhere. it's blanketing a lot of the country and will continue to move on top of us. there's a chance we'll hit 100 degrees tomorrow afternoon but probably a better chance thursday afternoon before the heat starts to back off but not until next week. the other thing, the storms out there. this cluster of storms is etch etch -- even starting to build more. it's starting to become severe. we're going to have to see how

much this holds together so make sure you check back in with us. one thing we are concerned with, notice this is the area targeted. if this holds together we could have another round of damaging winds. this is not as strong as friday night but still not something we want to mess around with. as far as the forecast goes, the front itself doesn't come through until tomorrow. if we get around a pretty intense round of storms tonight that will wear out the atmosphere for tomorrow afternoon and limit our chances. then on thursday the front tries to pull away. it may start to try to lower the humidity but the temperatures are staying up. the forecast looks like this. today we're going up to the mid- 90s dropping down into the 70s. then tomorrow we go back up again. 98 degrees for your high and just a word of caution, tomorrow we know is the fourth.
