sweating it out. tens of thousands still without power as temperatures sore again. how much longer can this last? good afternoon. here's what people are talking about today. the tens of thousands still without power this noon. progress is being made at getting more people online. crew red sox still try -- crews are still trying to clear the hundreds of trees that fell. wjz is live with coverage. we will check in with marty bass in a moment. first mike schuh is live in northeast baltimore with more on this huge easy to ration effort. good -- restoration effort. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. the damage has moved to north baltimore over to parkville. that's where we are now where the repair work is basically going foot by foot. >> carroll used to be one in a million. >> saturday, sunday, monday,

tuesday. >> it's out of your control. >> exact ly. >> near the city line on his porch to keep cool he may not have to read the news, he's part of the news. >> down the street and back across the street probably from that unit down to the end unit -- you can see down the street there the poles have been sheered. >> carroll is dead center near that origin and red dead spot along northern parkway. with 1/3 of the work force coming from out of state, carroll's restoration crew comes from bge. >> there's no tap that's left undamaged. >> here's what that means. >> people frustrated by the pace of progress need to look in this alley. this pole snapped in half. there's another one 25 feet that way, another one 25 feet that way and it continues for two blocks. >> i have ten sections of wire

damage and equipment damaged and service loops. >> so ten trees? >> we have at least 25 trees down in just this tap alone. >> we're talking maybe a two or three block area? >> yes. >> with that many trees work begins to move once the tree cutters have come through. by nightfall carroll should be one in a hundred whose power was restored on this hot 4th of july day. >> reporter: so speaking of numbers, there are 1,300 out of towners and bge keep shifting in people locally. there's a total of 4,000 people working today to restore power. back to you. >> thank you very much. those out of town crews will be in town to this weekend when the majority of the work is expected to be completed. people in nearly every county and most neighborhoods are still cleaning up at the

backyard level as well. in elk ridge in howard county a tree caused extensive damage. more large trees like this one are still sitting on top of power lines and decks. it's making repairs more difficult to make repairs. at our last check there are fewer than 100,000 bge customers without power. the majority of the outages are still in baltimore county. there are 23,000 here in the city and more than 5,000 in howard county. it's going to be another hot and uncomfortable day for those who don't have air-conditioning. taking a live look at a beautiful looking sunny day, but it's also very, very warm. the heat advisory is now in effect. our first warning weather coverage continues with marty bass in the weather center. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. let's go to the current right

now bottom line and take a look at temperatures. the heat advisory went into effect at noon through 9:00 today. it's 90 at tv hill. our normal high is 87. that 90 degrees is actually 4 degreece cooler than -- degrees cooler than this time yesterday, which is keeping the heat index a bit down. we're at 93. heat indexes this afternoon may stay below 100 degrees. the advisories or watches we have right now have to do with heat. we have the heat advisory through out maryland's 95 corridor. once you get north of cecil county up towards wilmington, new york, long island, that's where the extensive heat warning is. knows we don't have -- notice we don't have any storm advisories at this time. here's first warning doppler weather radar. we have a clear scan around maryland. you start to widen up and go to north western pennsylvania and you can see we

relaxation. behind the scenes romney huddled with his top advisories on tuesday, including his campaign manager. with just over 4 months to go until election day the latest poll shows the president with a slight lead over romney 48 to 44%. the president will try to increase that lead when he kicks off a two day bus tour through ohio and pennsylvania on thursday. republicans both plan to campaign for romney in those same state. >> the president's first stop on his bus trip will be ohio, south of toledo followed by a stop across the state in akron. the inner harbor is preparing for hundreds of thousands of visitors to celebrate the 4th tonight. city police are rolling out a new strategy to avoid a repeat of last night when fights and violence marred the holiday. a

new perimeter fence will be set up. the department is changing the way officers are deployed, using gps technology to track the big crowds. dundolk celebrated this morning, getting its leg up on everybody else. this morning the 48th annual 4th of july parade kicked off at 8:15 with people along the curb three hours before that to get a good spot. tonight fire work shows will be held in baltimore and of course all across this state. some of those displaying will be held at the inner harbor, fuller ton park and organ ridge. go to wjz.com and click on our links and numbers for more. in other news, a serial drunk driver convicted in the hit and run death of a john hopkins university student is asking for gnaw hearing now. last year thomas meighan pleaded

guilty to vehicular manslaughter. now according to our media partner the baltimore sun meighan wants a new hearing claiming he was pressured into a plea deal he did not want. prosecutors have not commented on his request. business is booming for maryland's casino. ron matz joins us for a closer look at numbers. >> reporter: the numbers are good. maryland's newest casino is providing a big boost to the state's economic. the maryland live casino generated $28.5 million in revenue on june 6th at its opening. more than a combined $12 million in june at other casinos. that means a lot of cash for maryland schools. maryland live is much larger than the other two casinos. it has more than 3,000 video terminals. the others have 1 #5shgs ,a -- 1 ,500 and 800.

it is sunny and 90 in central maryland right now. your complete first warning weather is still coming up. the jetblue pilot who had a midair melt down is not going to prison. a federal judge ruled clayton osbon not guilt by legal insanity. he caused the co-pilot to make an emergency

landing. he will be sent to a mental health facility for further examination. portions of japan are experiencing the heaviest rainfall ever recorded. one person is dead as a result of widespread flooding. one area had nearly 4 inches of rain per hour for an extended period of timement more rainfall -- time. more rainfall is expected through out today. before the fire works go off in new york city tonight, it's time for the annual hot dog eating contest. the two defending champions and their challengers gathered with new york's major michael bloomberg for the official weigh in. last year's winner hat ate 66 hot -- ate 66 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. still ahead on wjz eyewitness news at noon, your complete forecast.

is a chance of spotty thunderstorms that any of those could be gustiful right now we're -- gusty. right now we're not in any risk box. what you might see is your average basic summertime thunderstorm. it's actually some pretty good news here in the area. right now on tv hill 90. 46% humidity, breeze at 10. barometer at 2988. 83 oak land, 85 cumberland, almost 90 elkin, easton, dc, packs river, ocean city. 90 columbia, 88 annapolis and kent island. next to the water, rock hall, kent island, it's stemmy. 87 bel air, 88 westminster. welly -- really what we're looking at which is triggering these showers is a wind shift. temperatures aren't going to drop. we will peel

in today's wjz health watch, the fda has approved the first at home hiv testing quick. it using a sample to swab taken from a person's mouth with results 20 to 40 minutes later. the test is said to be 93% accurate and 99% correct in determining people who are negative. be sure to check back in with wjz's eyewitness news today at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. we continue with coverage of the power outages. >> the latest on how md -- on
