hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> an excessive heat warning for parts of the area now. and it's each hotter for 10s ever thousands of marylanders without electricity and for those utility crews trying to restore power in this heat. the temperatures are in the upper 90s now. and the real feel, though, is in the low triple digits. outside now, it is hazy, hot and very humid. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. bob turk and tim williams are tracking how hot it will get. we'll start inside first with bob. >> let's take a look. last report, the computer coming in at 97. 99 in d.c. 81 in oakland and 89 in ocean city. but the dew point is 70 degrees. that is a very moist

atmosphere. 97. 102 for d.c. 100, hagerstown. and ocean city as well. only 82 in oakland. 90 in elkton. it is dry up to the north and northeast of us. high temperatures and high heat index. we do have from -- actually from now, starting noon until 8:00 tonight. we have a heat advisory, except for the city, as you can see, neighboring areas, east and west. that's an excessive heat warning until 8:00 tonight. eastern shore areas, up to jersey as well. they have an excessive heat watch tonight and probably again tomorrow. and likely again on saturday, before we see somewhat of a break coming in our heat and humidity. tim in the outback with a look at just how hot it's been. tim? >> well, we've talked about these temperatures now, just like a broken record. and today again, temperatures have gone up to near 100 degrees. we've already gone up today to 98 degrees. we have a little bit of a drop. it's gotten us to 97. but our heat of the day, we could still tack on a few degrees there. we could be easily in the

triple digits. and we hit temperatures of 106 degrees. as you see our forecast high, we do spike on saturday. we'll be in the low 100s for our forecast high. heat index on that day will be around 110. and sunday, will be the last day, we hope before we get a break. our running tally is just 19 days now of 90-degree-plus temperatures. and if we do hit 100 degrees todays are 100 plus days or so, we'll be at three for the year so far. and that is a big "so far." we'll talk about when we can expect relief coming up in a moment. back to you inside, kai. >> thank you. our first warning weather tonch continues. wjz is in baltimore county. mike hellgren is in another hard-hit neighborhood, with the latest on the massive effort to get the power back. >> reporter: the cleanup continues in neighborhoods like this one, across maryland. baltimore county remains the hardest hit, in terms of people without power.

and the head of the public service commission today said that he expects utilities to spare no expense to get it back on. >> reporter: day 6. and tens of thousands of people are still without power, as crews work around the clock to restore it. >> mother nature is obviously angry. >> reporter: the chair of the public service commission, which regulates bge, says utilities could face fines if the response is not satisfactory. an extensive evaluation will begin once everyone's power is back on, with bge required to detail restoration efforts within three weeks. >> you will have the opportunity in a deliberate and appropriate way to look at whether their systems should have weathered the storm better. and what if anything, should be done about that. >> britney value, who just gave birth, is still waiting for power after a massive tree chopped the lines that service her. >> everyone is frustrated, hot. it's definitely way up there. >> the numbers are not going to

>> mike, thank you. and here are the latest now on berg, on the power outages. right now, about 45,000 bge customers are without power. baltimore city, baltimore county, still the hardest hit areas. stay with wjz for first warning weather coverage all summer long. for the updated forecast and a look at live doppler radar, log onto week.com. the body of a man believed to be a missing jet skier is recovered in baltimore county. 47-year-old harry gillis was last seen early tuesday in essex. that afternoon, his jet ski was found drifting with the keys in the ignition. the coast guard searched a six- mile stretch of back river wednesday. last evening a body washed up near a dock. an autopsy will confirm the identity of the man and how he died. the neighborhood watch volunteer who killed an unarmed florida teenager, could go free. a judge granted zimmerman bail for a second time. randall pinkston reports for wjz from new york. >> reporter: a judge set bail

for george zimmerman at $1 million. that's a lot more than the $150,000 bond he was released on in april. but the judge revoked that bond last month, after prosecutors said zimmerman and his wife misled the court about their finances. the couple didn't tell the court they had collected more than $100,000 in online donations. zimmerman's attorney said last week, he's hoping those who donated will reach into their pockets again. >> it's going to take a lot of money to get them out on bond. and to put up a good defense for him. >> reporter: the judge wrote that zimmerman's actions suggests he might have been hiding the money as part of the plan to flee the country. the former neighborhood watch captain is charged with murdering trayvon martin, inside a gated community. zimmerman has pled not guilty, claiming self-defense. he told investigators that the unarmed teenager attacked him. >> he felt as though he was

minding his business, walking from the store. if that's a crime, i guess we all have been guilty of walking away from a store. >> reporter: the 28-year-old will be electronically monitored. and he won't be allowed to leave florida, something he was allowed to do the first time he got bail. in new york, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> a trial isn't expected for months. the investigation into a deadly air france crash is over. denise is in the newsroom to explain what french investigators said what went wrong over three years ago. >> well, mary, technical failure and human error led to the crash that killed 228 people. flight 447, from rio to paris, plunged into the atlantic ocean on june 1, 2009, during a nighttime thunderstorm. everyone on board was killed. now, accident investigators say ice crystals caused the plane's auto pilot to stop working. and the plane went into a stall.

the copilots had to fly manually. and believed the plane was in a dive and not a stall, and reacted incorrectly. the report calls for pilots to have better instructions on flying manually at high altitudes and more strict certification rules. >> the final report included a study of the plane's black box flight recorders. >> police in london arrest people on suspicion of terrorism. they used smoke grenades in london's olympic park. five men and one woman were being monitored by intelligence officers. they insist the arrests are not linked to the olympic or pair olympic games. britain's terror level is not being raised. hi, everyone. we have a couple of delays out there to start this afternoon. if you're traveling on the west side of the inner loop, slowing there from southwestern boulevard to liberty road. northbound 95, a lot of congestion there, begins at caton avenue, to the fort mchenry tunnel. we still have that water main

it's 99 degrees and sunny in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a fourth of july tragedy in new york. a yacht capsizes, claiming the lives of three children. it happened last night in oyster bay, as people on board were watching fireworks. the bodies of a 12-year-old boy and two girls, ages 11 and 8, were found in the boat's cabin. 24 others were rescued. the boat's operator said lightning cracked. then the boat was hit by a rogue wave. investigators were looking into

81 degrees. >> wow. >> even water that you get into for some relief does heat up. the temperature is 81. it's like bath water. >> even the pavement around that fountain -- >> it's hot. >> yes, it is. it is just another sign that there's hardly any relief out there. and if you find some, it's short-lived. but you do find it as well as you can. it's going up. since our check at the top of this hour, we were looking at temperatures around 97 degrees. look at the temperatures now. they've come in at the national weather service. we're at 99 at bwi marshall now. the inner harbor at 10 twenty one. -- 101. that combined will take you into a heat index in the low 100s. i'll show you that in just a second. 39% relative humidity. that's deceptive. because when you go outside, what you feel is that combination. not bringing any relief out there. 79 in oakland. 98 in patuxent river. 98 in ocean city. 99 in d.c., easton and at bwi marshall.

around the immediate metro area, everyone in the low 90s, up to about the mid- to upper 90s. well, we'll just say in the 90s. 91 in annapolis and kent island. and then we get into that 99- degree range around columbia and rock hall. this is what it feels like when you factor in the elements. feels like 107 now at bwi marshall. feels like 110 down at the inner harbor, where we're talking about the folks in the water 107 in easton and pax river. and 80 is the cool spot. winds are coming from the northwest at 6 miles per hour. winds are going to be bringing in very warm air. that's why we expect to have -- basically, we're calling this tory. just another blast of heat coming in here tomorrow and into saturday. it's because none of our neighbors are getting relief either. 99 in atlanta and memphis and kansas city. only place getting a little break is detroit. they had a shower move through. chicago had a bit of a shower move through. so the air temperatures cool down a little bit. but those showers are going to stay primarily away from us. if we get anything at all this

that pool looks awfully refreshing. some others chose to stay in the shade. that, too, is a good idea. now take a live look outside. the sun still beating down on our area, through that haze and in the next few days, it could get even hotter. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage of this extreme heat. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk areup dating the temperatures ever -- are updating the temperatures for us. >> and they came in a little while ago. look at this. it's up to 99, officially, bwi marshall. d.c. also 99. 99 in easton. cool spot, oakland, 82. and ocean city, 88. but the dew point is at 70 degrees. a very moist atmosphere. so when you combine 99 with a dew point of 70, on your skin, it feels like at the airport, at least, 107. same thing in easton. western maryland, 95, cumberland is the way it feels. and oakland, only 83. even ocean city, 98 at pax river. at 104. now, because of these extreme

temperatures, in the city, as you can see, out of the northern sections of delaware and the philadelphia region, there's an excessive heat warning until 8:00, 9:00 tonight. really makes not a whole lot of difference. it's just terribly hot. and the eastern shore, also excessive heat watch tonight and again tomorrow. the rest of the region, a heat advisory until later this evening, until things begin to cool down. tim in the outback, with a look at how hot it's been recently. tim some. >> well, you know, we have been sitting and waiting for these numbers to come in. the official numbers for the day. and this system is poised -- this day is poised to move up to about 100 degrees. so with that, we will update our numbers. but we were expecting a triple digit day today. 99 is where we topped out, as bob mentioned. we don't expect much of a difference tomorrow, with the heat up to about 98. saturday is actually our forecast high of 103, with the heat index of 110. and i have to say that these numbers could be a little conservative. because there's really nothing stopping this blast of heat. again, we'll continue to update these numbers as we move on

through the weekend. we'll start to see some relief after sunday. the beginning of the week. looks like we'll be at or below our normal high, which is 87. so far, we've had 90 days at or above 90 degrees. or 19 degrees, i'm sorry. at or above 90 degrees. that number of 100-degree days, within that, is up to two. if we hit one more degree up from where we are now. that be in will go to 3. and the heat wave just continues. we'll continue to monitor these numbers for you and have the complete updated first warning forecast with bob coming up in a few moments. back inside. >> thank you, tim. well, friday's massive storm plunged millions in the mideast into darkness. here are satellites from nasa. it will help put into perspective. the one on the left, taken before the storm. the one on the right, taken after. you can see a dark spot or virginia, west virginia, and washington, d.c. in our area, tens of thousands are still without fans or air conditioning. mike schuh reports, crews work around the clock to get the

baltimore, bge and outside crews,ing two jobs to restore over 150 people. >> seems like we flip the switch. because when i seen them do that, that's when the lights came back on. unfortunately, usually takes a few hours for that to go. >> they have enough linemen on the job. but there are so many trees down that that's what is taking the time. >> reporter: high winds brought down the trees on the lines. and those same gusts blew this tree into sanda ruck's home. >> i'll be 70 this month. and i spent saturday and sunday, out here trying to get my front door open. i'm exhausted. >> her outages, complicated by this tree. special tree cutters are being called. and heavy trucks can't get into the backyards to reset the poles. it all adds up to long, long days. >> what's your work day going to be like? >> 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. >> what was your work day before that? >> 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

unit holds 10 to 12 pounds of freon, which is far from free. >> yeah, a lot of people are really surprised when they come out and they're used to paying around $30 a pound. and now it's about $80 a pound. people are very surprised, very shocked. >> reporter: newer air conditioners run on a type of freon, called 410a. r22 is for air conditioners two years and older. but the government is phasing it out, over the next 18 years. >> it's an ozone-depleting product. so it's not environmentally friendly. >> reporter: but this year, the epa proposed a cut in r22 production by half. it's left suppliers in a bind. >> since we're unsure how much r22 that we can buy, we limit how much we will sell to our customers. >> reporter: with demand high and supply supply low, r22 has become liquid gold. prices a pallet, $96,000. it used to be $36,000.

>> basically, what's happened is the average service call has gotten $150 to $200 more expensive than last year. >> reporter: this one, 12 full pounds. >> $648. >> reporter: the unit he's working on now, escaped with a topping off and a new coil. >> luckily, it was only a small wire. but you know, it's nice to know it will be repaired. >> reporter: the only other choice is buying a new air conditioner, costing thousands of dollars more. >> reporter: well, the $50 per pound increase of freon happened in just about six months. illinois congressman jesse jackson, jr., the son of reverend jesse jackson is taking a leave of absence. the spokesman said it is because of a medical condition. >> the congressman's office said today, representative jesse jackson, jr., is being treated at an inpatient medical center for physical ailment.

it also says jackson's condition is more serious than previously thought. there are no specifics about what the chicago democrat is suffering from. but he has been on medical leave for three weeks because of exhaustion. so far, reverend jesse jackson hasn't commented on the condition. he has been under scrutiny for years. including having his name linked to former governor rod blagojevich. >> jackson has never been charged and denies any wrongdoing in that scandal. in tonight's 2012 report, president obama is on a bus tour. danielle nottingham reports, the president is stoping in manufacturing towns that helped him win in 2008. >> reporter: president obama is tackling the battleground state of ohio in a bus. supporters lined the streets on his way to momi, a small town, just outside toledo. >> hello, ohio. >> reporter: the crowd braved the heat to hear the president explain why he deserves four more years.

a wild protest in korea, after a man crossed from the south into the north. hundreds of angry protestors burn said effigies in a rally. officers arrested a south korean man, after a three- month, unauthorized visit to the north. after the trip, he paid respects to the late north korea leader kim jong-il. south koreans must gain permission to enter the north as the two sides are still technically at war. for the first time in months, nato troops are crossing the board orrer -- border with supplies. this comes days after secretary of state hillary clinton apologized for the killing of 24 pakistani soldiers by u.s. aircraft last november.

the cruise ship captain of the ship costa concordia is now free. mary is in the newsroom with the latest. >> an italian judge lifted captain francesco schettino's house arrest order. he is accused of manslaughter in the accident on the cruz line that killed 36 people. the ship's hull was severely gashed when it ran into a reef. prosecutors speculate that he maneuvered the boat dangerously close to the island and to people fishing, in a publicity stunt. investigators say speed and fatigue may have factored into a tour bus crash that sent 24 people to a hospital in new york. the tour bus hit the highway median, then skidded on a guardrail on its way back from foxwood casino. police say the driver was

likely driving too fast. detectives are trying to determine if the driver may have also fallen asleep at the wheel. a lifeguard fired for saving a drowning swimmer, is now being offered his job back. but thomas lopez says he does not plan to return to work. the guard left his designated zone in south florida monday to rescue a man struggling in an area the lifeguards are not contracted to protect. he was fired on the spot. the lifeguard company policy is to call 911 when someone is drowning outside of guarded zones. >> i see someone. and i have the ability to go help them, i'm going to help them. i'm not going to worry about jurisdiction or any other nonsense like that. >> reporter: it was the second rescue lopez performed since he was fired. six other lifeguards have not returned to work. in tonight's consumer watch, banks are making checking account fees easier for customers. many are now providing short, easy-to-read summaries of account fees. citigroup is expected to announce this month that it

here's a live look outside now. barely can see the city for all the haze out there. bob? >> oh. >> that is dirty, disgusting, hazy, hot, humid. pretty nasty afternoon most places. at least around the urban areas. really close to 100 degrees. or even above 100 degrees. and it feels even hotter. now, tomorrow and the next two days really. next two days are going to be the worst at this heat wave. until we start breaking the heat down. that will be late saturday night and sunday. take a look at temps now. last numbers coming in at bwi marshall. bwi marshall, remember, and the city stations, really surrounded by tons of acres of black top and concrete and brick. really does heat up things even more than the surrounding

areas. northwest winds at 9. dew point 70. humidity 39%. locally, 94 elkton. hagerstown. 93 in cumberland. 88 in ocean city. nice, pleasant, 82 in oakland. 99 in d.c. and once again, all of these high temperatures feeling hotter because of the dew point. 91 in annapolis and centsz island on the bay. humid but certainly a lot cooler. 97 in bel air. we have a light north/northwest breeze now. there have been a couple of showers beginning to develop across central pennsylvania up towards state college. there's a slight chance some of these thunderstorms may make it into northern maryland after 7:00, 8:00 tonight. slight chance. maybe 20% chance that something will be watching this evening. and any of them, with all of this heat and energy, could become locally strong. we'll talk about that possibility later on this evening. right now, there have been several little batches of

thunderstorm activity developing across the great lakes. this is pretty much the boundary line between cooler air and the real heat that is sitting over the midwest. chicago is over 102 a little while ago. but they had shower activity. this morning, showers in west virginia moved down across the area, died out. now, another bunch of showers beginning to pop up in pennsylvania. just in the last few minutes. might be able to see some of those clouds right there. chicago, detroit area, had some showers there. a lot of rain in kept kent. -- centsdz kent. -- kentucky. cooled things down there. new york, dryer in the 90s. but the dew point only in the upper 50s. air to the north. we might get a little dryer air tomorrow. but it's still going to be very high. saturday, the worst day coming up before we begin to see some cooler and less humid air coming in on sunday and monday. so right now, the jet stream is way up there in canada. and across northern new england. north of that, pleasant 60s and 70s. everywhere else, hot, upper 90s to low 100. north east to east winds.
