baltimore with the latest on just how deadly this weather has been. >> reporter: it's hard to believe it's been nearly a week since this storm hit and debris like this still litters the street with triple digit temperatures and power outages, eight heat-related deaths have been reported in maryland. medics rushed to help davis, he and wiz wife stuck in their sweltering apartment with no power. >> i had a heatstroke. >> reporter: the couple trying to get help for themselves and their neighbors. >> we've been calling since day one. we've been calling since day one. >> reporter: volunteers from the mayor's office canvassing neighborhoods with ice and water to help the city's most vulnerable. >> no citizen should live under these conditions. >> reporter: eight people in maryland have died from the heat

since saturday. five in baltimore city alone, two in montgomery. many more have fallen ill. >> we've seen a lot of heat-related illnesses. >> thank you for calling. this is bianca. >> reporter: they have restored service to 94% of customers, they still have crews working around the clock. they've received 1.2 million calls since the storm. >> when we get down to the last 50,000 or whatever, they're very difficult jobs to work. >> reporter: that's why bge is holding all out of state crews until all power is restored. as for davis? >> i'm going to make the best of it. >> reporter: and pray the lights come on soon. they continue to call in crews from out of state. 250 extra workers arrived just today. live for wjz eyewitness news.

>> thank you. maryland's public service commission warns the utility could be fined if their response breaks any regulations. here's the latest from bge tonight in baltimore county. more than 16,000 are still in the dark. in the city, more than 8,000. and in howard county, it stands at more than 2000. first warning weather coverage continues with bob who is tracking this dangerous heat. >> now for saturday which is going to be the hottest day of this current heat wave before we see some cooling, take a look at the advisory that will go into effect. an excessive heat watch will be in effect. we could have temperatures in the low 100s. the real-feel temperatures could be as high as 110 on saturday. that would make it the worst day of this particular heat wave. now as far as the temperatures

morning. police charge a 12-year-old boy with second degree murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl. we are live and we have the latest on this shocking case. >> reporter: it's a heartbreaking story. in prince george's county, police were just beginning their investigation. as they do, life inside this home is slowly being released. it's a horrifying crime that happened tuesday in fort washington. police were called to the home of the toddler after the girl's foster father called 911. she was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. >> an autopsy confirmed the child died of blunt force trauma. >> reporter: the child has been identified. in a twist, a 12-year-old boy living in the home with her has been charged with second degree murder accused of beating her to death. >> probable cause to charge the boy based on interviews conducted with the family. >> reporter: the boy has been remanded to the youth facility

in prince george's county. >> the 2-year-old was a foster child and the 12-year-old was a biological child of this family. >> reporter: prince george's county police say thereby discussions whether or not this 12-year-old boy could be charged as an adult. since he's a minor, his name is not being released. >> two other biological children live with the family. one is 15 years old, the other is 9. a 4th of july party ends in tragedy when a 3-year-old boy drowns in a backward pool. we were over the scene in the 600 block in brooklyn park. when they realized the child was missing last night, they found him at the bottom of the pool. paramedics rushed the boy to the hospital where he died. the investigation is on going. the drowning death of another child has led to a new law. had a lifeguard at a public pool

used a defiblator when he drowned, he might have survived. ever since, his parents have been fighting to make sure all pools have defiblators. tomorrow, county executive will sign connor's law. george zimmerman could be out of jail again. a judge ruling he could be released for a second time. it's going to cost him. >> reporter: george zimmerman can be released from jail again, but this time it's going to cost him $1 million. judge kenneth lester said the second bond amount is significantly higher over concerns he might be hiding money. he's charged with second degree murder. he was released on $150,000 bond in april. it was revoked last month when the judge said zimmerman and his wife misrepresented their

finances at his bond hearing. in thursday's order, the judge wrote the defendant has tried to manipulate the system when he has been presented the opportunity to do so. zimmerman's attorney says defense costs have wiped out the money raised through the website. through his own blog, attorney mark omara appeals to those who already gave as well as potential new donors saying now is the time to show your support. if he makes bail, he will be under strict bond conditions. he must submit to and pay for electronic monitoring. he can't leave seminole county without court authorization, something he was able to do last time. and he can't open a bank account or obtain a passport. he will have a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew and must check in with authorities every 48 hours. he said he shot trayvon martin

in self-defense. >> his wife is scheduled to be arraigned at the end of the month for her role in misleading the courts. lance armstrong is striking back at the antidoping agency accusing them of waging a vendetta against him. several former teammates have received reduced suspensions for testifying against him. the usa da says they have proof he used performance enhancing drugs throughout the best years of his careers. he has always denied doping. a broken water main burst for the second time under york road. it was fixed yesterday, but officials say that heat and heavy equipment being used to repave the road likely caused it too break again. a portion of york road is closed near ashton while the repairs are under way. a positive sign for the town center mall. more new stores are set to open

it is mostly clear, 82 degrees right now. the complete forecast is coming up. first, shocking video from a parade in wisconsin. watch as the flag bearer is hit from behind by a car. police say he suffered injuries to his head and back but is expected to live. they said the 87-year-old driver passed out from the heat and the car kept going. it just missed several spectators before coming to a stop when it struck a barricade.

24 hours after a train derailment, crews found a vehicle buried under the collapsed ridge. there were two bodies inside. 27 cars went off the tracks while carrying coal from wyoming to wisconsin. the cause of the accident has not been determined. a french investigative agency report into the 2009 jet crash paints a picture of mass confusion in the cockpit. the pilots were seeing faulty data and hearing deafening alarms. that led them to pitch the plane sharply up sending it out of control and into the atlantic ocean. all 228 people aboard the rio to paris flight were killed. the report revealed ice crystals blocked the sensors. the pilots did not know if they were stalling. the blaze damaged the roof

of the 75-year-old hershey park arena. park spokesman says workers were installing a new roof, but it is not known if that started the fire. several rides had to be shut down. a canadian community gathers to pay their respects to the victims of a deadly mall collapse. questions about the tragedy still linger. >> reporter: there are heavy hearts in elliot lake. family, friends, public officials, a community coming together to say good-bye to two of their own. >> it certainly is a down day for all of us. it's been so unexpected. >> reporter: killed in the algo center mall collapse last month. >> she was a really nice person. she was good to talk to, go to the mall and have a cup of

coffee. >> it was unfortunate that she went that day. >> reporter: lucy alwin was working when the roof caved in. a tragic twist of fate that claimed both their lives. for lucy's fiancee, the reality is hitting hard. >> i was supposed to be with her for the rest of my life, so... >> reporter: there are many questions about what led to the mall collapse. the people of elliot lake are waiting for answers. >> there's lots of people who feel there should be a criminal investigation. there's been problems with the mall for a while. >> in addition to those two deaths, the collapse injured 22 people. a lifeguard in florida ends up getting fired for doing what he's trained to do. thomas lopez saved a 2146

year-old swimmer who was drowning in the ocean. however, the swimmer was not in lopez's assigned area. the man was in a section where he was swimming at his own risk, so they fired the lifeguard because he violated company policy. >> they made it very clear beforehand that we would lose our job if we did violate this rule, but i wasn't going to let that stop me, you know? a stupid rule over someone's life. >> after his firing made national headlines, the company offered lopez his job back. he declined their offer. three other lifeguards quit after the incident. the 4th of july fire works were spectacular, except for one problem. the planned 20-minute show lasted -- you saw the entire thing, 15 seconds. a techny cool glitch caused them all to launch their fire works at once.

the city was calling it the big bay boom. unfortunately the boom went bust for the thousands of spectators. >> i'll be right back, dear, i'm going to run to the restroom. you come back, it ice over. >> and people who waited all afternoon and all evening, and that was it. storms in baltimore and harford county. a couple of trees down this afternoon and evening. right now it's quieted down. a few light showers around richmond. it's gotten drier than it was earlier. even though tomorrow will be a hot day, i think tomorrow may be a little less humid than today. look at temperatures down 82. typically the dew point goes up, but it has come down somewhat. more comfortable tonight than it was last night. we were 86 last night at this

hour. the hot spot, no rain there, 89 in washington. through the city where we saw those heavy showers, temperatures dropped into the low 70s. west minister 78. 82 in columbia. 99 degrees today, but it felt like at one point 107 on your skin with the humidity and the high dew point. 87, 66 with the average. record 102 and 55 in 1979. a light wind now tomorrow. looks like we have a bit of a north wind for a time. there is some drier air up across new jersey and northern pennsylvania with this weak frontal boundary. it's going to be very hot tomorrow. a little hotter than today.

on saturday, the heat, the real heat, the core of the heat and humidity will be coming back. saturday night thundershower possible, then this front coming through on sunday. it will be turning cooler and less humid by early next week, it will be almost pleasant conditions. you can see the clouds to the northwest. across new england, clouds up there as well. a lot of stuff to our south. that's what moved through the baltimore county area. lake showers leaving the delaware coast. northeast to east winds 5-10 knots. the bay temperature warmed up to 81 degrees. tonight, warm and humid. mid-70s over night. tomorrow, a hot one. not quite as humid as today, but it could get up to 101. that would tie a record. look at this, 103 would break the record on saturday. 95 sunday. we're getting better.

in football, another ugly off season in the nfl. the players union has filed a lawsuit against the league over the handling of the new orleans saints bounty scandal. it's a federal suit on behalf of three players claiming commissioner roger goodell was biased asking a judge to appoint a new arbitrator to the investigation. the league says the lawsuit is improper. no argument about the power of serena williams. the four-time champion displayed her strength on center court firing a record 24 service aces in her semifinal victory. she advances to the final for the 7th time. she will face raglanska of poland. local lacrosse with an international flavor. the team in the green jerseys is the australian national under 19 squad taking on the rock
