at all. so troy kelly has never made a check on the pga tour over $20,000 and he has a chance with a two at the last to win outright and win over a million here at the greenbrier classic. just a wedge left, and hopefully one putt. nick: maybe a little more than a wedge, ian. 1 4. ian: he's a big hitter, though. nick: got to get it over the ridge. there's a lot swimming through the player's and caddie's minds right now. jim: a beautiful trophy that's going to go to the winner. of course, when you get that breakout performance, and these
6:01 pm
are two really extreme long shots we have right now tied for the lead. and not only do you get that $1 million check and that trophy, it will have a little georgia on their minds. the winner goes to augusta. nick: he's very relaxed. personally, i would just disappear and quietly stay to yourself. maybe just go and putt, mess about somewhere quite. the ranges is -- range is only 75 yards away. jim: his lady friend sheree is here and they've been enjoying themselves all week. taking part from many activities here at the green bri,e including trap shooting and some offroad jeep rides. nick: they have plenty of red flags on top of the hospitality to give them a good, clear idea. touch right to left.
6:02 pm
jim: we're in white sulphur springs, west virginia. the magnificent greenbrier and the third playing of the greenbrier classic. two players who have come from way back and have battled a journeyman's path to this last -- last hole to share the lead. here is troy kelly. nick: just control the adrenaline. that's the most important thing right now. david: pitching wedge. oh, and they're feeling a little breeze. it got cooler. nick: the last thing you want to do is belt a wedge. david: 20 feet left of the hole. nick: that's the safest spot to hit it. jim: that putt for the win. nick: yeah, that's an awkward corner. you can't be short and you can't be long. so that's the professional bailout. to the middle of the green. jim: his world ranking just inside the top 500. poter is ranked 218th. ted, who won the south georgia classic on the web.com tour last year on a monday qualifier. he'd played up to that point in 55 web.com events and had only made six cuts, then he won that

off of a monday qualifier, helped get him high enough up on the money list to go on. won twice in 2011 and that gave him the membership, the upgrade here to the pga tour. here's webb simpson. david: with a 9-iron. nick: it looked late. maybe he was trying to save it. and he -- ooh. that's actually a good shot. it's only six feet from being a great shot. jim: so another nail biter here at the end at the greenbrier. nothing unusual from that first year. that birdie putt for 59 from appleby that was the winning putt and last year, scott stallings the rookie birdied the 72nd hole. and then won the playoff to receive the jacket and the

first-prize check and the dream to go to augusta for the first time. this young man, troy kelly, is actually 33 years old. he played the mini tours early out of college college, out of the university of washington. the gateway tour, the phoenix tour. but ran out of money, had to find a job and worked in the home building business. worked for a friend who was a contractor. he said mainly he was just loading up stuff from the truck so he could make enough money to to practice golf. eventually catapulted to the canadian tour in 2007. and we talked about it yesterday, he had some health issues. specifically had to have a hip replacement. that was just 18 years ago. >> please welcome webb simpson!
6:06 pm
nick: he said i had a lot of strain in my left hip and i tried to gut it out and then arthritis set in. >> give a greenbrier welcome to troy kelly! jim: today he could be introduced on every first tee from now on as the green bear classic champion of 2012. that's if he makes this putt or goes on into a playoff after he two-putts here. nick: it's massive. it's the win. it's the masters and then a two-year exemptions. that completely changes your life from the position you were in before. jim: he had that hip replaced at the eisenhower medical city in palm springs and three months before he could even practice.
6:07 pm
again, he's sharing this entire experience with his brother ryan, caddying for him right there. he was a professional at one time then went back to the amateur ranks and co-owns that restaurant in bremerton, washington with his father bob. kelly's 19th hole. nick: i always watch their faces. these guys are relaxed. comfortable in this situation. jim: webb simpson pops it up and will make a par. scruffy finish it's been for the u.s. open champion. might be a while before we see him again. his wife is expecting the couple's second child at the end of this month will probably will take him out of the open championship. nick: yeah, it will give him some time to think about this. a head-scratching afternoon. you come in as champion of the
6:08 pm
u.s. open and all that pressure. bottom line, he couldn't handle it today. that will put a little dent in his forward step for a while. jim: 40 coming in. last year he was 48 on the last nine. had a chance to win it each of the last two years. seven instead. peter: working with rookies on tour like this, their number one goal and worry is whether they can have a job next year. one of these two is going to be -- have a job for at least two years and one is securing a place on the money list from this finish. nick: as long as ted doesn't drink too much iced tea up there on the balcony. too many arnold palmers. right. he's just sitting there, just
6:09 pm
-- not 100% sure. you don't have to see anything. you can hear it. i hated watching. i didn't like to watch the other guys. i could hear it. you knew exactly what the roars meant. a big roar and that's it. you pack your bags say well, that was a great week, but if you hear a moan and a grown and then applause after he taps it in then you know you're head fargo playoff. david: i took a look at this putt and it does not look easy to read. does it go right at the end? it looks like it goes left at first. jim: of course, you don't want to do anything here crazy either. nick: you get a rush of blood thinking this to win and knock it four feet past or whatever. but they've been good with their routine. let's see. jim: this for the victory.
6:10 pm
easy. nick: holy, holy. jim: whoa. nick: don't react. just get on with it. david: that was a heck of an effort. nick: good putt. just a smidging -- smidgen with controlling the adrenaline. you're thinking this to win but you cannot get too carried away. now they have to really regroup. he's putting fantastic today. jim: only one he's missed was the one at 17, and, of course, that was outside of 10 feet. he's made some really difficult curling inside of 10 feet. nick: great putt on 15. great putt on 16. so one more. have a club sandwich, please. jim: do i have time to order
6:11 pm
one? this to send it back to the 18th tee for a playoff. there you go! nick: well done. jim: don't go anywhere. we have a cinderella matchup coming up at the greenbrier. he will be heading back to the 18th. potter knocked it in there close and made a two with his spectacular three-two finish. he picked up three shots over kelly those last two holes. playoff coming up. every shot here can make a world of difference.

standings. kelly would move town 559 if he wins it. potter would move to 51st if he's the champion. this is the finish that got him to the playoff. at the 15th. look at this. forget about this one. -- forgot about this one. nick: this was only about the second putt made from any distance on 15 and then a fabulous second shot. toledoed it through the two bunkers to the front of the green. and then slam. jim: stood over that putts for a long time and switched -- swished it. he got to 18. no problem. unflappable was ted potter jr. down the stretch. there's his scorecard. well, each of them are guaranteed $658,000 in second place money. but they want the first prize and they'll settle it when we and they'll settle it when we return. sfx: sounds of marching band and crowd cheering just you know walking,

jim: tonight on cbs, back-to-back episodes of "60 minutes," "the good wife," "the mentalist," on america's most watched network, cbs. waiting for the players to make their way back to the 18th tee.

kelly has just come out of the storage tent. this is what ted potter jr. did about 45 minutes ago, slinging one off the slope. what a way to back up the eagle three at 17 by kg the birdie for a two at 18. and then kelly, indecisive for a bit, trying to gauge the winds. this would have worked really well with last year's hole location. middle of the green back portion. he had to grind out a three-footer for his par. and the numbers, they are astonishing to think that you opened the week here, nick, and the excitement, the talk. it's about tiger and phil. and you get to the end and it's about ted potter and troy kelly. it's been fun.
6:18 pm
there have been other guys like charlie beljan. breakout performances. nick: these guys are throwing big chips. they've never seen a chip this big in their lives. their biggest check was about $20,000. they have nearly 7,000 banked. and i just wonder whether ted has been sitting there too long taking it win but maybe if the wind stays there a little bit to the right, he may have the advantage because that's where his natural shot is. if troy pulls it he's working away from the flag so very interesting situation. these two guys have really got to grip themselves and say right. if i want to win this i've got to grab the bull by the horns and try and make a two. jim: i can hear the excitement if your voice, old chum. nick: i love place. i get all worked off.
6:19 pm
it's not just the playoffs. jim: who doesn't love the story about a couple of guys who have led journeymen careers out here and then suddenly one of them is going to be changing -- well, they really both are. but one's going to have the two-year exemptions, the trip to augusta. nick: it's life changing. none of it is luck. >> ted is going to pick first and you'll play in this order. ok, ted. jim: so jill justice, daughter of jim, the chairman and owner. nick: easy pick. easy decision. jim: she was in charge of the numbers game and now they have the order set. here we go. nick: if anything it's just gone calmer and flatter. the light's changed a little bit as well with maybe some clouds rolling over. perfect visually to -- no sun to consistent into or -- peter: there's not a breath of
6:20 pm
wind down here right now. it is dead calm. nick: that will help troy. because before he had a little indecision. he knows just a nice, solid wedge and he might as well go right at it. hear them saying same shot. >> you got plenty. david: and he does have plenty because basically he hit it a little into the breeze to the back edge almost the last time so he doesn't need to crush this. nick: they talk about playing 60% shots. it's probably like an 80% wedge. pulled. jim: i don't think he likes that back right pin with his ball flight but i think it might be very suitable for potter. nick: he's been there before. same putt.
6:21 pm
jim: it is. almost identical. so neat to see a finishing hole par 3. that's the case at east lake down in atlanta, oak hills in san antonio, which has had its big events. alster mackenzie design in santa cruz, california. of course, they'll be starting with a par 3 in two weeks. potter, you have to think maybe this suits his eye the way he played it the first time around. nick: i agree. peter: he's going with a 9-iron so he's got plenty of club. jim: coming in again. nick: wow, it was a fabulous shot. oh, sit down.
6:22 pm
that's nasty. jim: boy, he went right at it, too. it was the same track as the one before but just inches long. back after this word.
6:23 pm
jim: just a little stroll up to the 18th green, the first hole of the playoff. playoff for the second straight year at the greenbrier classic. this was in regulation just moments ago. this is what troy kelly faced. and now from the same framing. it's a little bit outside of it but same basic line. nick: same length, so that's important to him personally, i
6:24 pm
think. he knows exactly how it broke. keep the same feeling. jim: you're a numbers guy. you're always talking about coming up with some sort of math to your moltey. he's got all this family back in the state of washington back at the family restaurant at kelly's 19th hole. they're all watching. of course, this is troy dell -- kelly's 19th hole of the day so what do you think? nick: that sounds good to me, jim. if that's as good as you can come up with, right now, jim, it's fantastic. peter: we had a similar situation last year with scott stallings hitting his tee shot in the playoff almost identically to where he'd hit it in regulation. of course, he made both of them. nick: got a lot of
6:25 pm
photographers around there, david. david: it's on a pretty similar line, isn't it? nick: exactly. it's a yard further into the middle of the green. that's about it. jim: he definitely knows the speed of this one too. david: and anytime you're off the green, as potter is, you just never know, although he appears to have a pretty decent lie. jim: you would think he'd be able to negotiate a three from there and have a run at the two. four or five inches off the four or five inches off the back fringe. nick: good pace this time. it's higher.
6:26 pm
it's just not turning. it just stayed out there, that one. didn't do anything like the other one. it's amazing. a yard further into the middle of green and it doesn't -- didn't want to break. jim: he is got his three and now there's just as much suspense and excitement in california for the potter fan club. peter: his ball is sitting down. i think the shot of choice would be the bladed sand wedge but he's looking like he's going to make a chipping stroke with it. nick: just off his left toe. peter: it's more difficult to make clean contact, i think, playing that stroke, but he has to go with what he's comfortable. nick: the other awkward thing, peter, it's really short. peter: he's only got to hit it about three feet.
6:27 pm
nick: yeah, so with all this nerve and obviously if you mis-hit a fraction it will get mag anyified. jim: would you think about hybrid or putter here? nick: i'd lean into that. hit it nicely. jim: yes, he did. nick: just keep going. whoops. jim: just inside of two feet maybe? a little nerves playing that shot. if this is hold, they will bes courted out to the 17th hole and play the par 5 -- if this is holed, they will be escorted out to the 17th hole and play the par 5 next. peter: the biggest thing about this putt is the enormity of the moment. nick: yeah, you've done this a
