relief, the deadly heat wave breaks but more are now without power. the latest on the impact of all this wild weather. good afternoon. here's what people are talking about today. more than a week of torrid temperatures left more than a dozen dead in the state of maryland. with the cool down storms early this morning knocked out power to more than 6,000 bge customers. wjz and mike hellgren is live with more information on the after math. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon. it certain ly feels a lot better out here. of the more than 4,000 still without power, most of those are in baltimore city and baltimore county. >> finally relief from the heat after more than a week of sweltering temperatures that killed at least 13 people in maryland and more than 45 nationwide. it buckled train tracks and roads, softened pavement. there could be more

deaths as final numbers are tallied and official reports come in from the medical examiner. more than 700,000 people were left without power last week. more storms over night knocked out power again to hundreds of bge just finished restoration efforts. the utility will file a report which regulates within three weeks about their response. they will hold hearings on whether it was appropriate. many won't forget the hot temperatures. >> i'm glad there's air-conditioning. >> a lot of people are sick of it and want it over. >> it is for now. >> reporter: there's continuing construction work underway on u.s. 50 in prince georgia's county. that's where the road buckled. a 50 by 40 feet stretch. we will continue to keep an eye on the power numbers and also on the death toll from the heat wave. reporting live, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you very much.

what will this week hold for us? let's take a live look outside right now. we have a mix of clouds and blue skies showing through. after last night's much needed soaking, tim williams is in the weather center with the numbers. good afternoon, tim. >> good afternoon. we deft definitely woke up to the thunder and lightening. it was a definite tran decision going on. the cooler -- transition going on. the cooler air is moving in. some of the rain moved through here with a bit of fanfare. the thunder and lightening came through. not a ton of rain with this. it moved across the state and with that some of those storms came through with a bit of a punch, but nothing severe. no severe warnings or watches were kicked into place. right now the temperatures is at 76. we have 84 up towards elkin, 79 down towards dc.

believe it or not, there's not much of a heat wave to talk about. 77 is the actual -- is what it feels like, although the actual temperature is around 76. we did come off of 12 straight days of 90 degree temperatures or better, four of those days were at 100 degrees or more and of those four days two of those were records and that was this past weekend, sunday and saturday. saturday we hit 104. we will continue to talk about what's going on for this week ahead. it's going to be much nicer than it has been. >> that's good news. remember to stay with wjz and first warning weather whenever severe weather threatens. go to wjz.com. if you are on city water you're being urged to immediately begin conserving water. that's because a major line running from the ash berg treatment facility is in danger of failing. tests will start

tomorrow to tie into lines from other centers. pressure will drop for the next few days. no outside watering or car washing is allowed and indoor use to be restricted if you can. a community is grieving on the eastern shore after a true tragedy. ron matz is back in the news room with information on a triple drowning. good afternoon, ron. >> reporter: police believe three young boys were trying to es kate the heat when they -- escape the heat when they drowned in federalsburg over the weekend. rescue crews were called to masrshyhope creek. a pastor says the boys did not know how to swim and had never before been in the water. neighbors say the creek is dangerous. >> it's a tragedy. they need to do something. they need to do something so that this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: the boy's pastor says the children are part of a small haiti community in that area. don, back to you.

>> thank you very much. police are ruling the drownings an accident. investigators are still trying to determine what's caused a fatal fire in millersville in ann arundel county. the blaze broke out yesterday morning. the fire quickly grew to two alarms and took about 40 minutes to put out. firefighters found a woman inside the burning house. medics pronounced her dead at the scene. tax cuts take center stage in washington dc as the president calls for an extension to the cuts for the middle class. danielle noting noting -- nottingham reports for wjz. >> president obama is drawing a line in the political sand, challenging congress to renew bush era tax cuts for the middle class. >> take it to the congress, show the congress isn't reacting. >> the president's proposal would only apply to americans making less than $250,000 and

extend the tax cuts for one year. >> we have to do something about the deficit and protect middle class tax cuts. let the upper end tax cuts expire. >> as he fights for a second term the president is trying to portray himself as a defender of the middle class and imply mitt romney wants to protect the rich. >> romney and republicans argue that tax cuts need to be extended for everyone. >> we aught to keep the rates the same for a year, something that governor romney supports because he believes that will simulate the economy. >> republicans are already calling this another one of the president's failed attempts to fix the economy and a tax hike on small businesses. >> the president would like for us to keep doing more of what he was able to do the first 2 years when he had total control of congress. the american people looked at the results, it has not worked. >> president obama will take his tax cut extension plan to

voters tuesday with a campaign trip to iowa. >> the push for the tax cut comes as democrats embark on an attack on romney, intensifying calls for him to explain offshore bank accounts and release several years of income tax returns. skateboarders and bicycle stunt riders need to steer clear of frederick county down. police are conducting an education and out reach operation. some business owners have complained about young people on bikes and skate boards causing disturbances. in baseball news, the oriels are heading into the all star break with their best record since 1998. bene showed promise at third base. chen had some major problems on the mound. he gave up three runs in four innings of work, his shortest

umbrella's or dressed down too much because of the hot temperatures. that is a wonderful thing. right now we have just scattered showers moving pretty much from west virginia all the way across the state. the system that moved through this morning followed a line of basically a cold front that's pushing through the region has just simply starting to break up. we don't have any widely scattered showers right now. we did definitely have them through out the morning. it came through without a lot of fanfare. we had some thunder and lightening. this is the first time we've seen this view in quite some time. it's a beautiful thing. it's a blank watches and warnings matt, meaning there are no heat advisory, nothing on it at all. that is just a nice refreshing change. that refreshing change comes with the help of delightful air pushing the humidity and suppressing it down to our south. that's curtesy of the front that brought the rain in. it's going to stall to our south, but in the meantime

temperatures are going to stay at or below or normal high, which is now 88. we're at # -- 79 this noon, winds are coming in primarily from the north and northeast bringing a bit of a cooler air mass with it. with that, the dew points are going to reflect a bit of a cool down. it's not going to be as humid and muggy over the next few days. everyone is pretty much about that 80 degree mark. we've been 10 degrees above this the last few days. showers will potentially be kicked into our region as a result of it. into wednesday because the front is not going to be far enough way that we're going to clear the rain or showers. we see some clearing. we have sunshine and blue skies in the forecast. each afternoon through wednesday we could have the chance for showers or thunderstorms. east wind on the bay with no
