baltimore child enter their plea. >> what happens now. >> hello, i'm jessica kartalija. >> i'm don scott. >> here is what people are talking about today. it's been more than a year since a 12-year-old boy was shot to death on his front porch in a suspected case of mistaken identity. now the three men charged in the case are entering their pleas in court. wjz is live outside the mitchell courthouse in downtown. mike hellgren has the pleas that were entered a short time ago. >> reporter: good afternoon. an emotional day in court in a case that shattered lives on both sides, the killing of this innocent 12-year-old. the defendants appeared shackled. they said little before the judge. she set a trial date. it will go to a jury the end of august. >> reporter: the three young men charged with the murder of shawn johnson pleaded not guilty. they face at least 25 charges for the shoot out in east baltimore last year that not

only killed johnson but wounded three others. johnson was an innocent bystander on a porch watching a basketball game. councilwoman mary pat clark was in court for the arraignment of donte robinson, antoine mostly and derek brown. >> there are no wins here. only losses, losses of young lives. >> police and prosecutors used phone records and witness statements to build the case. family members and friends of the defendants were in court but refused to say anything about the case. >> you want to say that again? >> i says kid my -- [ bleep ]. >> reporter: some of those same people were in tears in the courtroom moments before. one of the young men, antwan mostly stole the judge he wanted to raise money to hire his own private attorney and did not want the services of the public defender. she told him it would be unwise to move forward without counsel. he understand the risks and was

willing to take them. mike hellgren. police recovered 16 shell casings and a weapon at the scene. john leopold is scheduled to stand trial about two months from today. he is accused of misusing his police detail. the judge has decided not to misdemeanor dismiss the charges. the trial will begin september the 4th. a day after two city fire companies shut down permanently due to budget cuts, the mayor proposes a raise for the fire chief. ron matson has the details. >> reporter: it will be presented tomorrow at city hall. she is proposing that the fire chief receive a contract extension as well as incremental salary increases each january through 2018.

the mayor's office says he deserves the raise. the chief makes about $160,000 a year. jessica, back to you. >> ron, thank you. firefighter union president rick hoffman calls the mayor's request ludicrous. a massachusetts man charged with plotting to fly model planes into the pentagon and u.s. capital plans to plead guilty. he was arrested in september in an undercover sting operation. he will apparently plead guilty to providing material support to terrorists and attempting to blow up federal property. president obama is determined to make taxes a key issue. he is heading to the heartland to make the case that he is the candidate with a plan that will help the middle class. republicans insist his plan will hurt the economy. danielle nottingham has more from capitol hill. >> reporter: president obama is taking his tax cut message to iowa. he is trying to convince voters

that extending bush era tax cuts for households making less than $250,000 a year is good for the economy. >> let's go ahead and extend tax cuts for 98% of people, make sure their taxes don't go up. >> reporter: the president warned congress he would veto the extension for wealthy americans. >> it would not make sense to give folks like me, mr. romney or mr. buffett another trillion dollars in tax cuts that we don't need then have it come out of the hide of middle class folks. >> reporter: this is setting the tone between the president and republican members of congress. >> the economy is stalled and there is a lessening of confidence each and every day. what does the president do, he doubles down on his own failed policies. >> reporter: republicans want tax cuts extended for all americans and insists the

president's plan would hurt small businesses. >> how raises taxes on small businessmen and women will help our economy, i don't quite figure out. >> mitt romney called an extension of all the bush era tax cuts a matter of economic freedom. if congress doesn't act, the tax cuts will expire at the ends of the year. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> in the senate today, republicans are pushing back against a democratic measure that would give tax cuts to companies that hire new workers and invest in new equipment. house republicans are now trying to repeal the president's health care reform law. now the supreme court has upheld it, the house will begin debate on stopping it from being implemented. an idea likely to pass in the house but highly unlikely to pass in the senate where democrats are in the majority and the white house promised to veto the legislation if it makes it that far. a gorgeous summer afternoon in our area.

partly sunny and 87 in central maryland. the first warning weather forecast is coming up. a stand off at a french school is over. the armed man took hostages including children and one parent this morning at a school complex south of paris. he later released them all uninjured. the suspect surrendered and was arrested. french schools are on summer vacation but are running summer activities. euro zone leaders agreed on a bailout for spanish banks. the 17 countries announced they will spend up to 30 billion euros on the bailout. the euro zone bailed out greece, ireland and portugal. the spanish economy is larger than all of those countries. lawyers for lance armstrong will try to halt the doping case allegations.
