case enter their pleas in court. mike hellgren is outside the mitchell courthouse with the very latest. >> reporter: this was an emotional day in court for a case that has shattered lives on both sides. the killing of an innocent 12- year-old in the dolly park neighborhood. all of the defendants appeared shackled. they said little before the judge. and she set a trial date before the end of august. >> reporter: the three young men charged with the murder of 12-year-old sean johnson pleaded not guilty. they each faced 25 charges for the shootouts last year that not only killed johnson but wounded three others. johnson was an innocent bystander on a porch, watching a basketball game. councilwoman mary clark was in court. >> there are no wins here. there are only losses. >> losses, losses, of young lives. >> reporter: police and prosecutors used phone records and witness statements to build their case. family members and friends of

the defendants were in court but refused to say anything about the case. >> you want to say that again? >> yeah, i said, kiss my [ bleep ] >> reporter: one of the young men, antoine mosely, told the judge he was trying to raise funds for a private attorney and did not want the services of a public defender. she told him it would be unwise to move forward without any council. he said he understood and was willing to take the risk. reporting live, mike hellgren, week eyewitness news. >> and police recovered 16 shell casings and a weapon at the scene. stunning allegations against the baltimore city firefighter. police say 29-year-old jamar simmons was running an online prostitution ring and illegal after-hours club. a second man is also charged in the case. simmons worked for the city fire department since 2000. wjz is gathering more information. we'll have a live report coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. sounds like a terror plot

from a movie. using remote-controlled planes, packed with explosives to blow up buildings. now a plea deal in the case. andrea fujii is following the story from the newsroom. >> reporter: resjuan ferduss is expected to plead guilty to two charges in federal court. he was arrested in september after undercover agents, posing as al qaeda members, gave him 24 pounds of fake c4, a powerful explosive. prosecutors allege he was going to pack remote-controlled airplanes with the c-4 and bomb the pentagon and u.s. capital. under the plea agreement, fairduss will spend 17 years in prison. >> defense attorneys say fairduss has a history of mental illness. crews are getting to work replacing an aging water main in southwest baltimore. the department of public works says the main under these railroad tracks could fail at any time, causing massive flooding. nearly 2 million people in the region are being asked to conserve water over the next

three weeks so crews can replace the main. some may see a drop in water pressure, beginning thursday. at least crews won't have to suffer in extreme heat while they make those repairs. a live look outside right now. another very pleasant, july afternoon. a far cry from this time last week. when we were in that heat wave. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to kristy in a second. but meteorologist bernadette woods is here with the updated numbers. bernadette. >> it's not like last week. we can definitely confirm that. we have a couple of thunderstorms that are fired up out there. these are all coming down from the north. they fired in southern parts of peyou can see they're making their way through carroll and baltimore counties. and they'll continue to the southeast, for the next, moving about, i'd say, 20 to 25 miles per hour. moving their way into cockeysville, towson in about the next 15 minutes. now, as far as temperatures go, this is what we're dealing with now. currently in baltimore, 87 degrees. we've got a lot of upper 80s

out there. not quite 90s but upper 80s. we'll take you closer and show you along the water, we're still seeing temperatures 87 degrees in annapolis and kent island. this stretch is going to continue. we'll have that forecast coming up. kai? >> let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic nt hi, kristy. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. a slow start out there for 95 northbound. we have delays beginning at whitemarsh boulevard to mountain road in the harford area. on the inner loop, stop and go there from charles street to harford road. the west side inner loop, we have a disabled vehicle at 95. that's definitely beginning to back things up. we also have delays in that region on the west side, from baltimore national pike to liberty road. average speed about 35 miles per hour. and as far as accidents go, one reported in harford county, route 23, at water tower way. let's take a live look. you can see a lot of traffic there. that's northbound 895 at potee street. it continues over to the steel street bridge. stop in and see the salty santa

your complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a wild brawl erupts at a hearing in florida. >> [ bleep ]. >> it was a free-for-all. this is what happens at the osceola county courthouse. now, that fight broke out between friends and relatives of a man accused of murder. and the family members of the two victims. this is all part of a stand- your-ground case in florida. several men were handcuffed by the sheriff's deputies caught in the middle of the brawl. no one was seriously hurt. a similar scene inside this chuck e. cheese in pittsburgh. police say a woman attacked her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend and other women at a party for their son. the 20-year-old is accused of cutting people with a knife and hitting others with a brick. she faces a number of charges, including assault and stalking her ex. well, it looks like a scene out of a movie. and people in boston thought it was just that. but as ken mccloud explains, a

bus accident on a movie set was very real for the people on the bus. >> reporter: when the bus plowed into the back of a movie production truck, working on the nearby filming of a sandra bullock thriller, some passersby wrote it off as hollywood stuff. >> a friend of mine thought this was part of the movie. and i was like, no, this is real-life footage. >> but this bus accident had the feel of an older flick. alistair allen, among them. >> oh, it was scary. the silence scared you more than anything else. you got thrown and you hit yourself. but the sound was like boom. and then you heard shhh. >> reporter: in all, 14 passengers went to the hospital with bumps, bruises and back and neck pain. a handful made the trip on precautionary stretchers. we train for this daily in what we do. so the training kicks in. everybody does what they need to. >> reporter: this bus driver also went to the e.r. as investigators try to figure out how she hit the movie truck on the 930 run after

>> employers may be ready to pick up the pace on hiring. the labor department says the number of job openings is on the rise. companies posted 3.6 million openings in may. that was the second highest level in nearly four years. but competition is tough with a ratio of more than three unemployed people to each opening. the company that makes the blackberry face disappointed investors at its annual meeting in canada. research in motion stock has been at a nine-year low. since the company announced major layoffs. but the board of directors told shareholders it supports the current management team, including the ceo. coca cola shareholders approves the first stock split in 15 years. they announced a two-for-one split. saying it expects to double revenue in the next decade. shareholders will reduce their shares in august. fraud and frozen assets.

but still a great day outside. it's a seasonably warm day. we are in the middle of july. it's going to be warm, too, when you get in your car, hot at times. but the idea is not 100s and not in the upper 90s and we're not talking about records. that's the big change since last week. we have a couple of thunderstorms out there we need to talk about. and you can see, when we put this in motion, there is a band off to the south. that's where the front has been stalled. but with that front close by, we still have the daily threat for shower or thunderstorm. and you can see in our area, we have this batch of thunderstorms coming down from pennsylvania into northern parts of baltimore county and carroll county. look at this boundary rear here. it's what we call an outflow boundaries moving out. about to move into urbana. that will continue to move off to the southwest. but here's the main cluster of thunderstorms. and it is moving to the east/southeast at 25 miles per hour. 20 to 25. not very quickly. switch it over and show you. we had sunshine. mixing through clouds. and eventually giving way to a

couple of those showers out there. a little breeze out of the east. that's about it. and temperature-wise, we're not going to stray from these numbers that much this week. maybe by just a couple of degrees either way. 87 is where we are right now. 89, hagerstown. still getting close to 90 degrees. 88 is our average. we'll be close to that average this entire week. we're not going to be talking about these records. and this is the all-time record for baltimore today. 107 degrees. now here's the overall map. you can see, no extreme temperatures in our region. all that was is locked up to the west. but as we head through the week, we'll start to see some changes. first up, for the next couple of days, still this stalled boundary to the south. and as we said, daily chances for showers and thunderstorms. now, the chances are a little less tomorrow and as we head into the first part of thursday. because there's a low moving along this. as it moves out to sea, it's going to push this a little farther to the south. but we're talking a minuscule amount here. because there is still a chance that could pop up. thursday, though, all of this moves back up to the north

losing their fight. >> reporter: this london apartment building is about to get a new feature. rooftop missiles. a british judge rules that the military can legally install them. and that's upsetting residents. >> i'm scared. and i'm scared for my kids as well. >> reporter: the missile, similar to one, can shoot down a hijacked. but residents worry the weapons will make this neighborhood a target for terrorists. >> whatever they have decided is now set in stone. so can't really change much. >> reporter: east london residents held protests and filed suit in the city's high court, to keep the missiles out. but a judge rejected the challenge, saying the weapons posed no real challenge. >> today is that the ministry of defense now has the power to militarize these private homes of any person in wri tain. >> reporter: -- britain. >> they are expected to install

within days. this building is one of six locations in london, where the weapons will be deployed. >> reporter: it's all part of britain's massive security operations for the olympics. fighter jets, naval ships and more than 20,000 20,000 soldiers and guards will work to keep it safe. >> reporter: the military offers a clear view to downtown london and the olympic parks. in london, monica villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. >> surface to air miss missiles were also cleared during the 2008 beijing games in china. investigators are close to finding out what caused a boat to capsize in new york, killing seven children. kai has more on the investigation. >> reporter: the vessel sank off long island on the fourth of july, killing three children. now, fbi and dive officials are working to raise the 34-foot boat from oyster bay. 20 people were on board, watching a fireworks display when it capsized and sank.

investigators are trying to determine if the boat was overcrowded and if the vessel had life jackets for every person. >> reporter: >> the operator says a big wave tipped the vessel over as a storm approached. a teenager follows a life- and-death balt. -- battle. >> the gator is about two feet away. came straight at him. abraham yelled fred. >> fred langdale's friend says the gator attacks seem to come out of nowhere as they came for a swim. >> the gator was coming after him. on top of the water. as fast as he could pedal. he was coming. >> reporter: gary beck was on shore, but jumped in to get fred and the others out of the water. >> he said my arm is gone. and he was freaked out obviously. >> reporter: friends in the river with him said langdale knew exactly what to do. >> he is smart enough. he know fist he offers him his arm, he won't take his torso.

he he was smart and took the risk. >> these teens are very well aware of the presence of alligators in these areas. >> just after mating season, the eggs are already laid. the alligators are still very active. any type of commotion in the water, is potential food in their eyes. >> reporter: fish and wildlife officers say there had been reports of two gators called in from that same area earlier in the day. the bite spawned a search. trappers also hauled in several are the gators in that time. lang dale's friends say it's part of their world. >> will this stop you from getting in the river again? >> no. especially fred. he'll be first person back? >> officers were able to retrieve the teen's arm, but theres were unable to reattach it. three people are dead at a soccer tournament in wilmington, delaware. they clude the tournament

organizer. also killed was one of three suspects in the shooting. he was fatally shot by someone in the crowd. the two other gunmen are now charged with two counts each of first-degree murder and other crimes. well, another baltimore city police officer is sentenced for his role in a widespread corruption scheme. 36-year-old officer jamie lugo will spend two years in federal prison for taking kickbacks from this auto repair shop in rosedale. prosecutors say officers steered to the shop. and the owners for the shop then charged insurance companies. lugo is the 14th officer sentenced to prison time. family and friends are coming to the aid of late penn state coach joe lineup -- lupo. >> there are questions raised over whether paterno tried to cover up the child sex abuse by coach jerry sandusky. with paterno no longer able to

come to his own defense, his family is fighting back, with their lawyer, accusing someone in a position of authority leaking information. they say leaked information is being taken out of context. paterno died two months after being fired from leadership for this sex scandal. last month, sandusky was convicted of abuse. what a difference a few days can make. this time last week, we were sweltering in very oppressive conditions. but a live look outside right now. about as perfect a summer evening as we could ask for. wjz has weather ask traffic together. meteorologist bernadette woods has more from first warning weather. >> hello there, everybody. this is what we have going on. we have a couple of showers and thunderstorms coming down from the nort. and we'll see some of them make their way. they are weakening since they left pennsylvania. but they're spreading. and you can see showers all the way over to bel air.

bordering conowingo. thunderstorms hanging in parts of carroll county. and it's moving to the east/southeast, very slowly at about 20 to 25 miles per hour. also, notice when i put this into motion. this is what we would call a gust front. it is spreading out to the southwest, from the thunderstorms that are forming. so gusty winds and a couple of showers. and that will continue off to the southwest. temperature-wise, this is what we do have going on right now. it's warm out there, but not the 90s and 100s. it's 87 in baltimore. it is close to 90 degrees, though, in hagerstown. we take you in a little closer. you can see those drop to 70 in westminster with the thunderstorms going through. elsewhere, we're still in the 80s. we'll have a full forecast coming up shortly. vic? >> all right. let's check on the roads now with kristy breslin. >> of course, some slow traffic out there, around the inner loop of the beltway. starting on the west side inner loop, slow there from baltimore national pike. on the north side inner loop, stop and go there, begins at the jones falls expressway, and goes around to harford road.

eye man vanishes after a house pool party. and now investigators believe they have found his body. police called off the search for missing 23-year-old alexanderbergman. officials pulled the body from a swimming pool in connecticut that they believe to be that ofbergman. a police chief said he checked the pool sunday but did not see anything because the water was too murky. an official statement is not yet released. a former florida weatherman is arrested for having sex with children. kai is in the newsroom with the latest on the scandal. >> former wptv weatherman rob livacola is charged with sex with minors.

a 15-year-old boy told police he exchanged e-mails through craigslist and text messages before meeting livacolla in october 2010. in the original ad, the teen lied about his age, saying he was 18 when he was only 15. the minor met with him where they engaged in oral sex in a car. >> livacola faces charges, including computer pornography and child exploitation and unlawful sexual activity with minors. a teenager with special needs and facing more charges tonight and in a lot of pain after he was pushed down a flight of stairs in his wheelchair. as -- it happened at a school in arlington, texas. >> reporter: watch this surveillance video closely. it shows a special needs student going up a ramp and seconds later tumbling down. the student in the video is 18- year-old payton jared. in early april, he was pushed

down these steps by another special needs student. >> he was knocked unconscious. jazz students were lot alone. eight of them were being supervised by three adults, one teacher and two teaching assistants. payton suffered a number of injuries. and his family was just told he has severe brain damage. >> this wasn't just a simple he got hurt and they put a band aid on it and the boo boo is fix. he is hurt. ask it's going to be for a while. we don't know how long. >> reporter: the cost of payton's medical care is skyrocketing. the family has needed everything from a new wheelchair. >> that could have easily been my daughter. >> reporter: tim with a nonprofit group made up of drag racers. when they heard about payton, they wanted to help and started a facebook page. >> my own daughter, you know? she can't communicate. i mean, he -- he can actually talk a little bit, you know?

but i worry about my own daughter. you know, she's in a chair, a lot like that. >> reporter: for payton's mom, she's now on a mission. just to make sure what happened to her son doesn't happen to anyone else. >> the school district is working on a new employee safety program to help prevent incidents like this in the future. fire crews are stretched thin in southwest idaho. officials are battling several fires at once. the most threatening today is the ben walk fire. that started as a brush fire, when it was sparked by lightning. it quickly spread, forcing several residents to evacuate. no buildings had been damaged. flame his burned at least 15,000 acres. rich williams has been on his fair share of royal tours. but now he's leading one. his father, prince charles, dropped by r.a.f. valley. where william is a search and rescue pilot. >> reporter: prince charles arrived here at r.f. valley with the duchess of corn wall. but they quickly went their

separate ways. camilla going to her home in cambridge. prince charles then took a tour of the base with his oldest son, prince william. had a look around the sea king, the helicopter that william normally captains and flies around this area. he starts seven or eight 24- hour shifts a month, which is the standard of someone in his role. they took a tour around the control room to see where he works and some of the uniforms, outfits he's expected to wear. this is a rare insight into flight lieutenant wales as he's known here. >> he had my blessing, to lead search and rescue operations. that means he's responsible for a 24-hour shift. for the efficient running of the organization here and also leading a crew with an aircraft to prosecute search and rescue.

with the santa fe steak & bacon melt or add egg for a santa fe steak, bacon & egg melt, perfect for breakfast or any time of day. subway. eat fresh. welcome back, everybody. okay, we're going to start with first warning doppler radar. we have a cluster of thunderstorms coming down. now expanding across parts of carroll county, baltimore county and harford county. also notice when i put it in motion. this line, this gust front, making its way down to the southwest, with a few showers and gusty winds for irvanna and frederick. also, now popping up over the past about 15 minutes. a few thunderstorms on the eastern shore, from chestertown, all the way down to queens town. we're going to switch it over and show you we had sunshine earlier. clouds starting to build up as we move through the afternoon. and with that front not that far away. we have chances. and we're seeing scattered showers and thunderstorms develop during these late-day

hours. a little bit of a breeze to the east. not much. and temperatures very close to our averages. 87 is where we sit now in baltimore. 89 in hagerstown. in the upper 80s for most of us. but look at that wind coming off the water. 79 degrees now in ocean city. 89 is where we've topped out so far today. you can see that average is 88. and we'll be very close to this average most of the week. this 107 is the all-time record for baltimore. and we are not going to be dealing with that this afternoon, fortunately. now, the extreme heat has made its way back out over the west. for us, temperatures are up there. but this is mid-july. and we're not talking about records for most of us for the next couple of days. there were lots drchtsz in a weather pattern next week. the front just stalled to the south. what it is going to do is sort of meander around. with it close enough, there's that chance for a shower or thunderstorm, each and every day. but what happens later in the week is, there's a new low along the front. it's going to come our way. and as it does, it's going to bring everything back up to the
