receive any jail time. a baltimore county man is dead after a confrontation with police. the violence unfolded inside a reisterstown home, as officers tried to serve an arrest warrant. wjz is live at baltimore county police headquarters. rochelle ritchie is there and has new developments in the investigation. good evening, rochelle. >> reporter: good evening, kai. well, the near fatal shooting of the 15-year-old led baltimore county police to a home and reisters -- reisterstown. and now, three people are charged and one man is dead. >> reporter: baltimore county police are now investigating the shooting death of a 48-year- old man, after police say he attacked officers with a sword. >> with a very large sword. somewhere in the range of 3 feet long. >> reporter: the shooting happened at this home on high meadow road in reisterstown, where police are serving a warrant of an attempted murder case on a 15-year-old boy in howard county. >> reporter: the officer opened fire to stop the attack. >> reporter: the sword-swinging suspect died at the scene. neighbors still in shock. >> it's kind of scary, knowing that somebody died a house

away. >> reporter: police say cox was not connected to the case. however, his roommate, 21-year- old david peoples, and 24-year- old laura car, are accused of kidnap 15-year-old sterling watts, as he walked home, leaving him for dead, after shooting him if a field. the third suspect, chikita skeeter, is also charged with attempted murder, assault, and kidnap being. >> it's really scary. it really is. because we really had no bounds or anything in this area. and all of a sudden, something like this happens and makes you rethink where you live and what happened. >> and the officer involved in this shooting. his name has not been released. but he is on paid administrative leave. back to you. >> rochelle, thank you. the deadly shooting remains under investigation tonight by baltimore county homicide detectives detectives. mew information tonight about the washington, d.c. police officer who reportedly reported made a threat against the first lady. can show a picture of the gun

he would use. he was assigned to a detail that would lead motorcades for the white house. he has since been removed and on administrative duty. >> a dramatic rescue from a burning apartment building in montgomery county. the three-alarm fire started around 7:00 this morning at the woodlake apartments. crews saved 17 people who became trapped inside. the fire caused $1.5 million in damage. and displaced some 75 residents. investigators believe an electrical malfunction caused a fire. >> did some firefighters go too far criticizing their bosses on twitter? the baltimore city fire department wants new guidelines on what they can post on social media. wjz is live downtown. mike hellgren takes us behind the controversy. mike? >> reporter: mary, the department says this is not about silencing its critics. and wjz has learned union leaders will meet with department officials early next week to hash it all out. >> reporter: the latest heated battle in baltimore's fire

department is over twitter. and what firetbieters can and can't post on -- firefighters can and can't post on twitter. it includes controversy over the chief's pay raise when fire companies are closing. one tweet read, save yourself. there are no medics. but you can call the mayor on her video phone. another questions how can the chief and mayor spat in your face. they say the new guidelines are notsz to re -- not to repress free speech. >> simply to establish concise guidelines and boundaries for which our members can communicate concerns. but it must be done, you know, decently and orderly. >> reporter: still, the firefighters union is troubled enough that they're meeting with lawyers next week. >> that's our main concern. that firefighters are protected. that's our only concern. >> i want to make sure our members are covered legally. >> but the criticism won't vanish. some say it am go underground

and they'll just post anonymously. >> the supreme court has ruled that they can face punishment in limited situations for what they say on associate media. but maryland general assembly recently passed a law saying you do not have to share your user names and passwords with employers. >> it's like tapping the phones. there's a lost personal messages. lot of personal messages. >> reporter: like the fire department, baltimore city police are also working on a social media policy. they say no specific problems are behind that push. >> reporter: and both police and fire departments say they're looking at other departments around the country. and professional organizations, in order to draft their policies here. reporting live downtown, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. mary? >> all right, mike. thank you. the department has no official deadline to put the new policies into effect. jp morgan chase reveals its giant trading blunder is much more serious than first reported. alison harmelin reports for wjz, with the fallout from the

banks and its traders. >> reporter: a bad trade at jp morgan chase has cost the bank $5.8 billion so far this year. that's nearly triple what the banks first disclosed. ceo jamie dimonsaid he has fired the managers in charge of that trade. and the company is taking back $2 million in pay from each of them. >> they've admitted to problems and making systems changes, so they say they're doing all the right things. time will tell if they really are. >> reporter: the trading loss came from the bank's london office, which is supposed to be balancing risk. but the portfolio got too complex. and managers lost control. >> reporter: when jp morgan first started investigating the loss, the chief dismissed it as a tempest in a tea pot. he now admits the blunder has shaken the company to the core. >> reporter: we don't take it lightly, dimontold an lifts, but we do think it's an isolated event. >> reporter: even with the giant loss, jp morgan made a profit in the last quarter.

as the news hilt wall street, it listed the stocks. and analysts pointed out, jp's loss may be a huge gain. >> if they've made a huge loss, someone has made a profit. we just don't know who that is. >> reporter: we also don't know if it's over yet. dimonadmitted, the bad trade could los lead to future losses. as much as $1.8 billion. in new york, alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> jp morgan's earnings were better than expected. that provided a boost to the stock market. s&p up 22. nasdaq up 43. showers are actually moving through parts of maryland right now. the rain is much-needed after lots of dry, hot weather this month. meteorologist bernadette woods is tracking live doppler radar and the first warning weather center for us. bernadette? >> also, the clouds sort of calming things down a little bit here. i want to show you first warning doppler radar. underneath some of those clouds. we have showers. and they are making their way

few minutes. the only plain plain lane that is blocked is the left-bound lane. i'm captain jeff long. back to you. a new law is trying to catch up to technology and the danger it poses on the road. in maryland, it is now illegal to text while driving. a new report says that police are starting to enforce it. it's day 1 for a new patrol. in a half dozen marked and unmarked units. the target -- >> trying to find somebody either texting or on their cell phone. >> reporter: it's something a lost us do. and probably all of us have seen. >> it's kids, adults, everybody. it's unfortunate. >> there's one right there. >> reporter: it's an overall effort to crack down on all sorts of distracted driving. but especially behind the wheel. now a primary offense in

interest of all americans at heart. >> when the president took office, we were losing 4 million jobs just in the last six months of the prior administration. we lost another 4 million jobs before any of the president's policies could take hold. so certainly we are working our way out of this incredible mess. >> reporter: the june labor reports cites the unemployment rate for african americans at 14.4%. compared to 8.2% of whites. >> we all know that the african american community suffered before this last recession. we have been having tough times for a very, very long time because of many of the policies of the prior administration. >> reporter: a recent gallup poll shows 87% of black americans support obam a. about 5%, romney. >> reporter: they expect the president to carry maryland, a state where democrats rule. >> and a fourth of african american policy discussions held around the country.

welcome back, everybody. getting some games in. batting practice there for the games tonight, before some showers arrive in our area. now, this is no reason to not go to the game. but there could be a little delay at some point because of a shower. first warning doppler radar. this is what we're looking at right now. this is not a solid band. and as mary was explaining, it's going up to the northeast. we are going to see spotty showers as we head through the evening hours. and if you're heading out to the game, we're still going to get the game in. there may be a delay at some point. we'll switch it over and show you what we've got going on in

our satellite radar here. and as far as this goes, we do have those showers that are going to continue to come in from the west, in different bands. now we can switch it back over and show you, with this wind going on, the wind from the southeast. still brought up warm air. it's 87 degrees in baltimore. 87 in patuxent. 87 also in d.c. but where the rain has come in. 68 degrees in oakland. and 70 in cumberland. we topped out at 89 degrees. very close to that average. and we have been there most of the week. within a degree or two. but the thing is, the front that is moving through tonight, through tomorrow, is a warm front. and it's going to bring much warmer air our way as we head into the middle part of next week. so here's how it works. there's a warm front here. all of that is moving in our direction now. tonight, the chance for a few showers, maybe a thunderstorm or two. then tomorrow, before this warm front clears. when it does, the chance for a

30. quench degrees and cloudy. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a quiet maryland town is shocked after one person is shot and killed outside a popular restaurant. the violence erupted in carroll county. andrea fujii reports with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: the harvest and restaurant and cheers lounge has been in business for 46 years. and the owner says he is used to violence here. >> it all happened. and it happened in eldersberg. >> early friday morning, jacob came out of the bar and shot into a crowd, standing outside. killing 36-year-old david garrett of sykesville. another man, gary hail, was also shot and wounded. >> investigators are attempting to determine why that occurred. what caused the shooting. we don't have a clear indication of that right now. bar regulars say they didn't

recognize the suspect. >> i heard there was no kind of scuffles here. there was no confrontation between him or the person that was shot. or anybody else. >> police managed to get a phone number for the suspect. called him and convinced him to surrender in westminster. >> witnesses say bircher shot multiple times. >> in the left-hand window of the house, through two bedrooms in a door. and hit the opposite end of the house. >> many carroll county residents say with violence on the rise, they hope they can continue having one of the lowest crime rates in the state. >> a record search showed that the suspect had no criminal past in maryland. he is expected to be charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. in eldersberg, i'm andrea fujii. wjz eyewitness news. >> the second man who shot is recovering from nonlife- threatening considers in shock

trauma. a pilot believes there is a possible bomb on board. vic has more details on what caused the scare. a passenger discovered a suspicious device in a bathroom. the pilot turned the plane around in midair. that's when a female passenger appeared to have a panic attack, alerting the splings suspicions of the pilot. >> yes, sir. we have a lady that is on our kitchen. but we think this is the one who keeps looking at the gentleman that was playing with this in the lavatory. so she has to be escorted by police also. they'll want paramedics to take her off. >> the plane landed safely at jfk, where all 206 passengers were searched and questions. police say the wires turned out to be strange wires that didn't belong to the plane. but they were not explosive.

>> delta says the flight took off for madrid early this morning. for the first time, we are seeing pictures of the hoody trayvon martin wore the night he was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman. the photos are just some of the evidence being released to others by the prosecutors. mark straus ford reports for wjz from sanford, florida. >> includes granny images and bloodstained shirts with a bullet hole. another shows fragments from the fatal bullet. also, transfers. then a lead investigator with sanford police. he told agents, george zimmerman followed martin, based on his attire, because of the hoody, and not skin color. high said zimmerman's story seemed scripted. they told the fbi, zimmerman had no racial tragics. -- prejudices. >> we don't know if he's a

racist or not. >> benjamin crump is a lawyer for sebrinna fulton. trevon martin's mother. >> all we know is that for some reason, he profiled trayvon martin as a criminal. and the only thing he knew about him was he was a young black man, walking with a hoody. nothing more. >> reporter: zimmerman was suspicious of martin. in the years before the shooting, zimmerman called six times to report suspicious activity. in one recorded call to police, zimmerman said he doesn't want to approach a guy he's suspicious of. but in another call, you can hear his wife shelly zimmerman tell him not to go after a suspect. >> just went between the houses to the back. >> i'm not. >> don't go out there. >> okay. i'll send an officer out there to check the area. >> thanks.

>> you're welcome. >> it shows that it is part of his modus opoperandi. violence in los angeles. a clash between police and occupy protestors, ends with several arrests and injured officers. it happened near the downtown art walk. people were using chalk to write on sidewalks and buildings when officers in riot gear walked in. there were reports that some of the demonstrators were hurt by police batons. accusations were flying between the two presidential campaigns about mitt romney's time. this comes from virginia to go to his planned recovery. dan notingham has the latest. president obama is firing

well, we've got a cloudy start to the weekend. outside now, the skies are overcast. overcast with showers moving through the state. meteorologist bernadette woods shows us what we can expect for tomorrow and the next five days. hi, bern. >> hello there, kai. and everybody out there. yes, this is what we have going on. a warm front slowly making its way across the state. couple of showers through the night and morning hours. then on and off chances for a shower or thunderstorm during the day tomorrow. not all day is going to be wet. but there is that chance on and off through the day there. temperatures still up there. 87 degrees for our high. but after that front clears us, couple of thunderstorms possible. but we're back in the 90s. and take a look at this forecast here. by the middle of next week, we are back in the upper 90s with the chance for an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. well, in today's energy saver, avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn your air conditioner on. it will not cool your home any faster. and could result in an excessive cooling. and therefore, unnecessary

[ laughter ] >> reporter: 12-year-old hannah bramer has the most infectious giggle, which is truly amazing, knowing so much of her life has been lived in pain. hannah was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease. hannah's story is inspiring to so many people, including a mega star in the world of music. >> happy birthday, dear hannah branna, bobama -- >> reporter: beyonce sings happy birthday to her every year and spends time with her after concerts as much as she also sent me hello kitty stuff. >> hannah loves going to the concerts, but soon she'll be going to shriners hospital in montral for special treatment. hannah's mom just sold their van to pay for the trip. >> she's had now well over 110
