a large sword. rochelle ritchie has more on what happened. >> this is all an attempted murder case in howard county. and police were looking for for the suspects. they found them in a home in rice twerstown. >> they are now investigating the shooting death of ronald. >> it was a large sword. somewhere in the range of three phot feet long. >> reporter: police were serving a search warrant on an attempted murder case, on a 15- year-old boy in howard county. >> it wasn't until police to the second floor of this home that this situation became deadly. >> the officers then opened fire. >> the sword-swinging suspect died at the scene. neighbors still in shock. >> it's kind of scary, knowing that someone died a house away. >> police say cox was not connected to the case. however, his roommates, 21-year-

old david peoples and 24-year- old laura car, are accused of killing 15-year-old sterling watts as he walked home, leaving him for dead after shooting him in a field. >> he survived and was found by a local resident who went out to get his mail. and discovered the boy laying in the field. he was transported for emergency care and released from the hospital two days ago. >> the third suspect is also charged with attempted murder assault and kidnapping. it's it's really scary. only have no bounds in this area. suddenly something like this happens and makes you rethink where you live. >> and the officer is now on paid administrative leech. the deadly shooting remains under investigation tonight by baltimore county homicide detectives. updating the story we first told you about at 5:00. a prominent political consultant has more!

and henson walked out of the baltimore county detention center today. his attorney requested henson's immediate release. so he could visit his sick mother before she dies. he was convicted of conspiracy to violate election laws. he had been sentenced to go to 60 days in jail. but only served about half of that. vic? >> mary, thank you. a second man was also convicted in the robocall scandal. campaign manager paul schurick did not get any sentencing time. did some firefighters go too far, criticizing their bosses on twitter? they want new guidelines on what they can post on social media. we'll is live downtown. mike hellgren has both sides of this hot debate. >> increasingly, firefighters have turned to twitter to sound off. now, some are questioning the proposed guidelines' new timing policy. >> reporter: the latest heated

battle in baltimore's fire department is over twitter. and what firefighters can and can't post on social media. it comes after fiery criticism of the mayor and chief online. including controversy over the chief's pay raise, when firecompanies are closing. one tweet read, save yourself. there are new medics. another questions, how can the mayor and chief spatd in your face. they say the new guidelines are not to repress stretch. but to ensure intelligence is not divulged. >> simply to establish concise guidelines and boundaries for which our members can commute concerns. but it must be done decently and orderly. >> still, it is troubled enough that they're meeting with lawyers. >> that's our main concern is that firefighters are protected. that's our only concern. >> i want to make sure our members are covered legally. >> reporter: but the criticism won't vanish. some say they are fighting

underground. and they'll post anonymously. >> reporter: the supreme court has ruled lawyers can face punishment in limited situations for what they say on social media. but maryland general assembly says you do not have to share your user names and pass words with your employers. >> it's -- similar to tapping a phone and listening to personal phone conversations. >> reporter: like the fire department, baltimore city police are also working on a social media policy. they say no specific problems issue are behind that push. >> and both the police and fire departments are looking at what department negligence are the cities have done. as well as professional organizations to develop their new guidelines. reporting live downtown, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you, mike. the department has no official deadline to put the social media policies into effect. maryland firefighters rescue a dozen people. take a look at the scene. 17 people were trapped by the

flame. and quickly rescued by firefighters. eventuallily, the fire went to three alarms. no one was injured. the fire caused $1.5 million in damage. a new law trying to catch up to technology and the danger it poses on the road. maryland, it's now illegal to text while driving. alex demetrick reports, police are starting to enforce it. >> it's day one for a new patrol in anne arundel county. in a half dozen marked and unmarked units. the new target? >> trying to find someone on the cell phone. >> reporter: it's something probably a lot of us do and all of us have seen. >> kids, teens, adults, everybody. everybody does it. it's unfortunate. >> there's one right there. >> trying to find a good place to stop them. >> reporter: it's an overall effort to crack down on all sorts of problem. >> you contact be on your phone

operational. they were supposed to be operational yesterday. but technical problem prevented that. for the next 30 days, speeders will be given warnings. jp morgan chase now says its giant trading blunder was much more serious than first reported. >> alex deec me-- >> a bad trade at jp morgan chase has cost the bank nearly $5 billion. that's nearly triple the $2 billion first disclosed. the ceo has fired the general manager of that trade. and the company is taking back two years of pay from each of them. >> they say they're doing all the right things. time will tell if they really are. >> this came from the balancing office. but the portfolio got too

complex. and managers lost control. >> reporter: when jp morgan started investigating the loss, the chief investigated the tea pot. he now admits the company was shaken to the core. >> reporter: we don't take it lightly, diamond told analysts. but we do think it's an isolated event. >> reporter: even with the giant loss, jp morgan made a profit in the last quarter. it listed financial stocks. and analysts pointed out, jp morgan's loss may be another's gain. >> somebody made a profit. there is another side to this trend. we just don't know who that is. >> reporter: we also don't know if it's over yet. dimonsaid there could be more losses, as much as $1.7 billion. >> jp morgan's earnings were better than expected. lifted the stock 7%. a live look outside right

years. and the owner says he's not used to violence here. >> we've never had anything like this. it all happened. and really, anything like this happened in eldersburg. >> reporter: early friday morning, police say 24-year-old jacob bircher came out of the bar and shot into a crowd, standing outside. killing 36-year-old david garrett of sykesville. another man, gary hail, was also shot and wounded. >> investigators are attempting to determine why that occurred. what caused the shooting. but we don't have a clear indication of that right now. >> reporter: bar regulators say they didn't recognize the suspect. >> i heard there was no kind of scuffles here. no confrontation between him or the person that was shot or anybody else. >> police managed to get a phone number for the suspect. called him and convinced him to surrender. >> witnesses say bircher shot multiple times. one bullet struck this man's house next door.

through two bedrooms, through a door then hit the opposite end of the house. >> reporter: many say with violence on the rise, they hope they can continue having one of the lowest crime rates in the state. >> the suspect had no criminal past here in maryland. he is expected to be charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. in eldersburg, i'm andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> the second man who was shot is recovering from nonlife- threatening injuries at shock trauma. conflicting reports tonight about a washington, d.c. police officer who may or may not have threatened to kill first lady michelle obama. initially, it was reported the officer told colleagues he would shoot the first lady and even showed a picture of the gun he would use. now, the police chief says that may not have happened. the secret service is investigating. friends and family are remembering marybel gresmler tonight. a business pioneer here in maryland. she formed a company that became the number 1

out. more of a rain off to the north and western parts of the state. and while all of this is going on, just a little breeze out there. not much of a wind. ahead of it, still warm out there. 86 degrees in baltimore. 87 in d.c. where the rain has come down. 67 in oakland. 61 in cumberland. and we did manage a high of 90 degrees today. still slightly above our average, but close to it. and that's where we're going to be again tomorrow. close to the averages. but after that warm front clears, the temperatures start climbing. we'll be in the upper 90s by the middle part of next week. this is what we've got going on for tomorrow. out of the southwest, we do have those showers coming our way. and they'll continue through the day tomorrow. here's how the fronts look. there's a stalled front to the south. warm front here. and a cold front behind that. and just spotty out there. that's all we're seeing. but as we head through the day tomorrow, and a few peeks of sunshine. we could see a couple of thunderstorms try to pop up. then the warm front clears us. we jump into the 90s sunday. still a chance for a shower or

it is 86 degrees. mostly cloudy. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. we are getting our first look rat the new evidence released in the trayvon martin case. he focuses on george zimmerman and his reasons for following the unarmed teenager that fateful night. >> trevon martin's hoody. and blood stains. another shows fragments from the fatal bullet. also included, transcripts. he said zimmerman followed martin because of his hoody, not skin color.

serino said it seemed scripted. but he was not a racist. >> reporter: others agreed. they all told the fbi, zimmerman had no racial prejudices. >> we don't know if he's a racist or not. >> reporter: benjamin crump saturday lawyer for sebrinna fulton, trescron martin's mother. at . >> all we know is he profiled him. and all he knew about him was he was a young black man with a hoody, nothing more. >> reporter: in the year before the shooting, zim areman called police at-- simmerman called misat least six times to report suspicious activity. in one recorded call to police, zimmerman said he doesn't want to approach a guy he's suspicious of. but in another call, you could hear his wife shelly zimmerman tell him not go to after a suspect. >> he just went between the houses to the back? >> yes.

[ inaudible ] >> i'm not. >> don't go out there. >> okay. i'll send an officer to check the area. >> okay. thanks. >> reporter: you're welcome. >> it showed part of his produs operandi. it is something that he does. he tries to take the law into his own hands. >> zimmerman has pleaded not guilt to second-degree murder and claims self-defense. a judge refuses to order a new trial for the deputy. last january, a jury cleared corporal rudy torres. torres shocked gray with a stun gun twice. because he says gray was resisting arrest. gray's family says their son posed no threat and was lying down when he was stunned. the judge said there is not enough evidence to order a new trial. metro officials are working

on new guidelines for operating trains. the derailment in prince george's county was blamed on a so-called heat kink that bent a stretch of track out of shape. three cars went off those tracks. no one was hurt. metro is also looking to improve response times to such incidents. washington, d.c.'s mayor is under growing pressure to resign. they are looking into whether the 2010 election was aid aided by illicit payments. none. that money was reported. so far, three city councilmembers are calling on gray to step down. he says he will not do that. a white house adviser defends president obama's policies during a forum. the forum follows republican mitt romney's statements at the naacp this week. republican presidential hopeful mitt romney tells the naacp that under the obama administration, african americans are worse off now

than they were before the president took office. >> the unemployment rate, the duration of unemployment. average income. median family welt. are all worse in -- wealth, are all worse in the black community. >> reporter: they hosted a regional policy forum at white house university. valerie jarrett tells wjz, the president has the best interests of all americans at heart. >> when the president took office. we were losing 4 million jobs just in the last six months of the prior administration. we lost another 4 million jobs before any of the president's policies could take hold. so certainly, we are working our way out of this incredible mess. >> reporter: the june labor report cites the unemployment rate for african americans at 14.4%. compared to 8.2% of whites. >> we all know that the african american community suffered before this last recession. >> we have been having tough, tough times for a long time

fan sports report. hello, mark. >> hello, denise. the orioles start the second half of their season with the series against the detroit tigers. and the o's sporting a new lineup. chris davis will be playing in left field for the first time in his major league career. nick markakis is batting leadoff for the first time in his career. now, markakis was out since may 1st, when he had a broken bone removed from his right hand. after some rest, he played in a few rehab minor league game. and is ready to return to an o's lineup. markakis talked today about how that injury is coming along. >> you know, i can't say that i'm pain-free. there's soreness in there. but you know, in the mix of things, you know, when i'm doing what i need to do, it's fine. it allows me to do what i need to do. so it's just a matter of, you know, taking care of it and getting the rest of that soreness out of there. so let's get it rolling.
