welcome to life on fios. ♪ kidnapped abroad. two americans held hostage in egypt. tonight, the fight to get them free. >> good evening, everyone. and thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. right now, a man and woman from boston are being held in egypt, after being forced off a tour bus. drew levinson has the latest tonight for wjz. >> security remains tight in egypt's sinai peninsula. friday, an armed bed win, abducted 61-year-old pastor michelle louis, and 39-year-old lisa alfonz, both from boston, along with their guide.

the hostage taker, named jeremy mabu assu told the american press he wants to exchange the americans for his uncle, who is in prison. louis and alfonz were part of a church mission, traveling in egypt, when their bus was ambushed. they were on a road from cairo to mount mount sinai. that's where the old testament says moses received the 10 commandments. >> he is diabetic. and the longer they hold him, i would assume that it's not going to work in his favor. >> reporter: alfonz's friend describes her as a great mother. >> she is always there for her kids. she's a great mom and a great person. >> reporter: abbu masu said that more people would be abducted unless his demands

were met. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton in egypt to meet with the president did not mention the abductions. the u.s. embassy is working closely with egyptian authorities, who are doing everything to secure the americans' safe release. >> and recently, several other tourists have been briefly held by tribesmen and released unharmed in egypt. julius henson, the political consultant who was jailed for his part in the robocalls. has been released. henson's lawyer said his client was let out a month early for good behavior and right now he is with his mother at a hospital in baltimore. a jury found the former campaign consultant guilty for withholding the required robocall tag line. but he was acquitted of the more serious charge of election fraud. he was sentenced last month, sparking outrage and rallies, demanding his release. an investigation is under way tonight after a deadly

police-involved shooting in northwest baltimore. wjz is live at city police headquarters downtown. monique griego has the latest on what happened. monique? >> reporter: and police say it started with a foot chase. but then the suspect reached into his pocket for a weapon. >> reporter: just before 6:00 this morning, police units swarmed this neighborhood in the 5100 block of arbutus avenue. after a 22-year-old man is shot and killed by a baltimore city police officer. investigators say the incident actually started a few blocks away, at this 7 eleven on belvedere avenue in reisterstown road. after someone called police and reported a man with a gun. >> saw someone matching the description. and it was a foot chase. >> reporter: one neighbor told us she ran into the house, after seeing the suspect flee from police. >> i saw this guy run from the alley, up to this street. then i saw the police car coming. >> reporter: when police finally caught up with the suspect, they say he reached into his pocket for what was later determined to be a semi automatic weapon. at this point, the officer

fired his weapon at least one time, shoot the suspect. >> one shot. and that was it. >> reporter: police say after being shot, the man was on the ground and continued to try to remove the gun from his pocket. officers were able to subdue the 22-year-old and call for help. however -- >> the suspect has died at a local hospital. and the weapon has been recovered. >> reporter: the police officer involved is a six-year veteran of the force and is on routine administrative leave, as the investigation continues. >> reporter: and the suspect's identity has yet to be released. adam, back to you. >> so far this year, there have been seven police-involved shootings in baltimore. six of them have been fatal. meanwhile, police in northwest baltimore are investigating another shooting in that same area of the deadly police- involved shooting. this happened early this morning in the 4100 block of newton avenue. police say a man was running away. the man who was shot is expected to be okay. and so far, no arrests have been made in this case.

a talented teenager's life, cut short in a tragic accident. and today, family and friends say their final farewells. gigi barnett reports that the teen's classmates say the accident taught them an unforgettable lesson. >> reporter: family and friends say 17-year-old alec cosgerria, had everything going for him. a star on his school's swim team. popular student at mcdonogh school in owings mills. and last year, alec talked to wjz about his fashion designs, a hit on the internet, all made from duct tape. [ bells tolling ] >> reporter: but today at the cathedral of mary our queen in baltimore, they all said farewell to alec, who was ripped from them too soon. >> he was a great kid. great attitude. >> he was very talented, so full of promise. and touched a lot of people's lives. >> reporter: baltimore police say alec was driving on

greenspring monday night with friends. now, he lost control of his car, it spun out and struck a tree. neighbor of -- medics tried to save him, but alec died at shock trauma. his friends are still in shock. >> just profound grief. that's all i can say. they're sad and hard to figure out. >> reporter: investigators say speed play a -- played a role. and now, police say the message to slow down is even more clear. >> i think we all kind of realize, it's not a joke out there. >> reporter: at the cathedral of mary our queen, gigi barnett, eyewitness news. >> a lot of people very saddened by this loss. alec had just completed his final summer swim meet just a couple of hours before that accident. well, clouds have been in and out for most of the day today. let's take a live look outside right now. boy, not much has changed. a lot of clouds out there. are we going to see any sun this weekend? let's check in with

meteorologist bernadette woods. she is live with first warning doppler radar. some of those clouds look dark. is there any rain, bern? >> there is some. now we're seeing rain and thunderstorms pop up out there. scattered about. there is no real organization to the storms. there's not a whole lot of wind to move these along. where we get a lot of thunderstorms, there is a lot of rain. a few of these over the bay are spreading off to the east. another round popping up over d.c. right now. and also, out west, with a couple more thunderstorms popping up. that's what we see at this point. switch it over and show you, so far, rainfall amounts. nearly an inch in columbia. but most other people have gotten below a half an inch. that's what we're seeing around the region so far. very needed rainfall. 83 degrees now in baltimore. only 79 in d.c. so slightly below average today. but all of that is about to change. we'll have your forecast coming up. adam? >> nice break when we can get

it, bern. thank you so much. a look at lives after the track. governor martin o'paly declares -- o'malley declares today thoroughly race horse day. >> reporter: it's not the party at the infield you may be expecting. and horses at pimlico today are more about showcasing than racing. it's the inaugural totally thoroughbred horse show, decided to feature the talents of thorough thor bred -- thoroughbreds after they're done. >> nowadays, people think that after they're done racing, there's no place for them to go. so this is proof they can do other things. they can show, fox hunt, they can do anything. >> reporter: more than 500 horses are entered. and competing for $4,000 in prizes. horses like wild about harry, from only maryland. no greener pastures for him.

call or go online today clear the way the internet should be it's cloudy and 83 degrees in central maryland right now. a few showers. bernadette will have details in the first warning weather forecast coming up. a somber setting at the six- month anniversary of the costa concordia cruise ship disaster. family and friends held a mass for the victims. now a team is planning to build a mat form so they can try to support the vessel and use cranes to ease it upright. they're also opening to collect more evidence. shark hunters off cape cod have a close encounter with a great white. check out this video. it shows the shark lunging out of the water. coming dangerously close to fishermen. in fact, yesterday, they had a record 11 sightings. they did manage to tag three of those sharks for research.

>> we're tracking their habits, when they come in, watides, what time of day. and see if we can figure them out. >> there hasn't been a fatal shark attack off cape cod since 1936. an oregon woman is using a rather unique tactic, trying to sell her house, by telling buyers that her husband cheated. ely had a sign outside of her home that said, had united states left me for a 22-year- old. goes on to say it's for sale by a scorned and slightly bitter single owner. it's not what you think here. it's not really revenge. her ex-husband actually helped her make the sign. they said they are just trying to be creative so they can sell the house and move on. well, after all of that, they can still get along, huh? >> getting your attention. weather is getting along now. >> we're over 8 inches down in our rainfall department. so we do need rain out there. get temperatures down a little bit today, too. we're at 83 degrees now. but as soon as this clears, the heat is returning. and we'll have that forecast when we return.

welcome back, everything. we're go to start with doppler radar. scattered thundershowers. we had that stalled front to our south. one front off to the west. and all of these interacting to give us a few of these rounds. we'll take you down to the southeast here. what we're seeing, just spotty showers at this point on the eastern shore. but a couple of thunderstorms around d.c. now. and moving down to the south of d.c. also, western parts of the state, we're seeing thunderstorms starting to pop up. so still a chance for thunderstorms as we head through the evening. then scattered showers overnight. we'll switch it over and show you. earlier, we had a little rain go through. then the thunderstorms build up. we're in this pattern through at least later tomorrow. not much of a wind out there. nothing really to push these storms along. that's right. if you do get a thunderstorm, you're going to get a lot of rain. as far as temperatures go. we're only at 83 degrees right now, with the clouds around. 79 in cumberland. so basically 70s and 80s and below average.

84 has been our high so far today. that average of 88, we're going way above it. starting monday. the climb begins tomorrow. but it really kicks in on monday. here are all of the storms that are out there. and this is the stormy pattern we're going to be in for at least a day, before things start to break up a little bit here. we've got this storm passing off to the north of us. then the cold front part of it moves by monday. still a chance for a couple of showers and thunderstorms monday. things will be a little more organized at this time. when this gets out of here, dropping the thunderstorms with it. you can see the numbers starting to build. but as we head through the early part of the week, you'll see 100s returning. and some of those upper 90s to near 100, moving our way. on the water, southwest winds at 5 to 10 knots. tonight, we're going down to about 70 degrees am still some rain possible through the night. tomorrow, showers possible early in the day. and then thunderstorms possible as we head through the afternoon. so a few different rounds around here. 95 on monday. 98 tuesday and wednesday. then another front comes through wednesday night, knocking us back down to 90.
