this is wjz tv, wjz hd, and wjz.com, baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. downtown drenched, a water main break at the height of rush hour flooding baltimore's busiest streets. >> i seen the pothole lifting up out of the air. the ground starts cracking in pieces. >> the danger, the gridlock, and the emergency repairs under way. >> hello, everybody. >> here's what people are talking about tonight. an infrastructure nightmare tonight. crews are trying to clean up from a major water main break. there is a lot of work to do and it could be days before downtown is back to normal. >> reporter: things like bus service, buss came, but they were so late a lot of people gave up and walked.

by comparison, this was a relatively small main compared to other water main breaks, but it is causing big problems. chopper 13 is over a 20-inch water main that drenched downtown. it sent thousands of gallons of water and sandy dirt gushing into the street. >> it looks terrible. it's like a bad movie. it's cracked. it's bulging. >> reporter: it happened about 5:00 p.m. at the height of rush hour. the city moved quickly to close roads and reroute traffic. some residents and businesses were affected. >> because the road has buckled, i would classify that has being dangerous. >> wow, this whole lumbar street is shut down. it's pretty backed up. nobody can get anywhere. i's a big inconvenience. >> reporter: the magnitude of the break quickly overwhelmed the city's ability to contain it

and traffic winded to a gridlock hole. >> today i was lucky, it only took me five minutes to get home. my commute for the next week or so is going to be pretty bad. >> reporter: this traffic could be a reality for days, if not weeks. they're warning drivers to take other routes or be prepared for other long delays. >> i think everyone was very frustrated when, you know, as we predicted, we had to increase the water rates. this is what it's for. >> reporter: all right, so my photographer zoomed in here. what you're seeing is the water continuing to gush out. that's water pumping out of the hole. what the department of public works has to do, before they can make a full assessment and get inside that hole before they can determine how bad the damage is.

the mayor doesn't believe this water main break and the construction to fix it will impact the baltimore grand prix. that could be changed. >> thank you very much. here's a look at the road closures. light street, st. paul street and lombard. stay with us for complete coverage of the water main break. we'll have the latest on the closures and the repairs. we're following breaking news tonight out of montgomery county where investigators are on the scene of a deadly small plane crash. it went down just before reaching the runway. one person aboard was killed, another flown to the hospital in serious condition. the faa will look into the cause of the crash. a grim mission is under way where a man disappeared while boating on the bush river.

we talked to those who desperately tried to save him. we have more on the continuing search efforts. >> reporter: dive teams spent the day combing that river, but there is still no sign of that missing boater. cries for help coming from the water. when richard dixon heard them, he knew it was trouble. >> i knew it was a grave situation. >> reporter: he ran to a neighbor's house who had a kayak. that man paddled out to help two men flailing in the water. at the same time, two doors down, this man jumped in his boat and reached one of the swimmers. >> it was hard to get the guy on the boat because he was so panicky. >> reporter: his friend never surfaced. >> we could have possibly saved the other gentlemen. >> reporter: they were fishing when they decided to cool off in the water. >> they jumped overboard.

one of them got away from the boat. >> reporter: rescue crews rushed to the scene. dive teams were out here on the water until late sunday night and back at it again at 8:00 a.m. monday morning. crews are using helicopters, sonar, and police dogs, but till no sign of the missing boater. >> i've never had to witness anything as tragic as this. >> reporter: even more heartbreaking, what was found inside the men's boat. >> the boat drifted straight toward my pier. i looked inside and i saw two life preservers. >> reporter: tools that may have prevented tragedy. >> reporter: recovery teams have suspended their search overnight, but they'll be back out first thing tomorrow morning. >> thank you. the coast guard says it has already searched 17 miles of water with no sign of the missing boater. a man hunt goes into the night in howard county. searching for the man who shot two people at a nail salon.

they think they have a motive and a new lead in the case. >> reporter: when gunfire erupted inside the nail and hair care spa saturday night -- >> it was frightening. >> reporter: christa ran for cover. the gunman shot the mother of his two children who worked here as a nail technician. he's accused of shooting her male friend. workers saw some some of the melee. >> i saw the guy running away and there was a gun in his hand. >> reporter: they found the get away car. it was abandoned here on allen lane in columbia two and a half miles away from the crime scene. >> everybody's hoping and praying he gets caught. she credits some motorcycle riders with helping to treat the victims and restoring calm. >> the community really helped.

>> reporter: the salon business is getting back to normal with supportive customers saying it was an isolated business. >> it's not going to deter me from coming back. >> reporter: he faces charges of first and second degree attempted morer when he's captured. >> and the victims are recovering. we have learned their conditions have been upgraded from critical to serious and fair. a sigh of relief. the ravens strike a deal to lock up a popular a player with a long-term contract. we are joined now with details of the megadeal for ray rice. let me read on here. ray rice is a fan favorite, active in the community, talented on the field, and now wealthy beyond his dreams. will i gets a five-year contract worth $25 million. the deal was struck minutes

before 4:00 p.m. had there been no contract, rice still would have been a raven for one season. rice would have sat out training camp and maybe missed some games. that's not a concern now. he's locked in long-term, getting ready for training camp, coming often his best season yet. he had the most total yardage in the nfl last year. with the rice deal done, the ravens next priority is a long-term deal for joe flacco. the ravens convene for training camp in owens mills in two weeks. maryland drivers under 40 can now renew their driver's license online. the motor vehicle administration is trying to streamline the renewal process. the first eligible drivers are under 40 because they don't have to take a vision test. next, the mpa will accommodate the vision test for drivers 40 and older. a major announcement from the baltimore grand prix as they work to get race ready.

organizers say they had dealers with significant sponsors. we have new details on this year's race. >> reporter: with just seven weeks to go, the new group in charge, race on, says it will be ready and revealed three new sponsors -- dr. pepper, sunoco, and giant food. >> we're going to build on that for 2013. >> reporter: the grand prix is likely to lose money, but investors remain committed and they want to stabilize the race. >> all the major building blocks are there. there are a million details in a race like this. >> reporter: single day reserve ticket sales just started. last year, they drew 160,000 spectators. track work will start later this month and continue right up to the race. drivers are ready to hit that track which is slightly tweaked through downtown.

it's 82 degrees, partly cloudy in central maryland right now. voters in british columbia get a first-hand look at the power of mother nature. a landslide caused several trees to crash into the lake in recent days. a rash of them have hit the province. on thursday a landslide destroyed three homes and left four people missing. rescue workers have discovered one body in the debris. the others are presumed dead. convicted pedophile jerry sandusky is facing new accusations going back more than three decades. three men say they were sexually abused by the former penn state assistant coach. they are the first to allege abuse prior to 1990. the state's grand jury investigation is still on going and could bring more charges.

run over by a car and killed during an attempted robbery. three masked gunmen forced bradford mccoy and three others to lay on the road. a woman panicked around run off running mccoy over in the process. a milestone in hiv prevention. it's for healthy people at a high risk of acquiring hiv through sexual activity. patients taking the drug will be expected to take part in a comprehensive prevention program. for athletes dreaming of olympic glory are arriving for the olympic games. more than a thousand volunteers will be on hand to greet each athlete and help direct them to

the olympic village. a young woman arrives in london to pursue her own olympic ambitions. she can run, shoot, fence, swim, and ride. and she is one of the best in the world. tonight on wjz, what drives a local pentathlete to go for the gold? everyone remembers michael phelps. now there's a new name. suzanne is one of the best in the world. but in a sport you've never heard of. it's part riding, part running, part shooting, part swimming, and part fencing. the ingredients of the modern pentathalon pitting her against the world's best athletes. if i would have talked to you when you were 7 or 8, did you ever think i'm going to the

olympics? >> no. >> she grew up riding horses. >> my dad taught me how to shoot. i got some lessons and started to work on my stroke a bit. >> reporter: it was at a national riding competition her olympic dreams took shape. >> we learned about what pentathalon was. i did my first when i was 17. >> reporter: how did you do? >> the coaches were like, where did this girl come from? >> reporter: in this world, plenty of people know suzanne now. she's one of only two american who called for the 2012 olympic team. you were born with athleticism and ambition. she'll have to be solid at the riding. they don't find out which horse

they'll be riding until 20 minutes before the event and they have to jump 15 fences. suzanne's riding coach feels confident. >> she is so gifted and so naturally balanced. >> reporter: sometimes it is dangerous. over the years, suzanne has broken her neck and her collarbone. >> there's a reality check. if i want to do this sport, i have to dedicate myself to the sport. >> reporter: it is a full-time job with hours of training every day. even someone as young as you has to hit the wall. >> my whole community backing me up, i have to suck it up. >> reporter: biggest thing of your life? >> right now, i think so. >> reporter: if you win? >> that would be the next biggest thing. >> and she's the first woman from maryland to qualify in the modern pentathalon.

>> that is just so wonderful. >> we need to root for her. >> good luck to her. not that far away. >> reggie: weather wise for us today, another hot one out there. that's going to continue. we're going to show you we did have a couple of thunderstorms pop up earlier today, but those are all dying down. let's go and take you through that there. this is what it looks like earlier today. just a few out there. those are all history. a little bit of a breeze, that's it. we could see some fog form overnight. temperature wise, still pretty warm. 82 degrees in baltimore, 85 in d.c. those dew points are high. still at this hour, it feels like 86 in baltimore and 96 degrees in d.c. our high today was 95. we're going to be at that or higher the next couple of afternoons. the average is 88 degrees. we'll be way above that until we hit the end of the week.

before we get that break, look at all of the heat out there. still 91 in minneapolis. a nasty air that will cycle over the mid-atlantic. behind that, there is another cold front. first up, there was a front passing by to the north today. that sparked a couple of showers. tomorrow, a little bit of a lull before this next front comes our way. when it does, it's going to spark up another round of showers and thunderstorms. what happens with this front is it gets very strung out and lays over the mid atlantic right into thursday. it's going to keep the chance for showers and thunderstorms around wednesday night through thursday. there is a chance it could linger into friday. there's a computer model or two showing that. most ideas are that it can keep pushing off to the south and clears out by friday. that's what we'll keep an eye on over the next couple of days. hot on the water. 83 degrees for our bay temperature.

all of this sun is dying down tonight. 72 degrees for our low. tomorrow, we're going rate back up there, even higher. 98. it is going to be hot and muggy. even though we're looking at the same temperature, it will feel worse because the humidity will be higher. then the cold front comes through. could see strong thunderstorms that could linger. we're pushing that front off until friday. >> thank you very much. coming up, the orioles fight to stay in the play off race. >> they try to swing out of their slump as they hit the road in minnesota. we have that next in sports.
