some chose to go out. >> reporter: last report coming in, oh, just dropped. last hour, it was 98. the only good news is that the dew point is still rather low at 63, so 98 degrees for the dew point of 63 feels like 100 degrees. that's the way it feels like right now. now 102 in ocean city is a lot cooler. 99 in d.c. we expect temperatures to be about the same but more humid tomorrow, and that's why we have the heat advisory. from noon until 9:00 all of thursday and wednesday night until things cool down.

most of the state is under code red heat emergency for today and tomorrow. when mother nature delivers, the postal workers still have to deliver. >> reporter: you're out house to house in the sun, how does it feel? >> we've got to take breaks. >> reporter: so hot, anyone outside has to stay hydrated and the higher you go, the hotter it is. >> reporter: sunscreen up just bakes you. people on rooftops has the hottest drops around. these type of severe temperatures can be deadly. extreme heat has contributed to the death of 23 people in maryland, ages 65 and older which is why health officials

say it's so important to check on elderly. >> our hearts have to work harder, our lungs have to work harder and it's harder to catch up and get to your normal baseline when we have extended days of heat. >> reporter: it's also a cruel summer for road crews with the hot asphalt. and they know the worst may be yet to come. >> been a lot of hot days lathely and probably more to come come august. >> reporter: b.c. e. said it's so hot they've evacuated a knob emergency peak rewards event, that means customers will have their air conditioners and heat compressors cycled as they try to conserve energy. wjz eyewitness news. derek valcourt. >> thank you, derek.

bigad shaban reports for wjz from los angeles. >> reporter: police in alabama say they captured the man in this surveillance video that's suspected of injuring 17 people, four critically in a bar in tuscaloosa. >> he indicated he was involved in the incident. >> reporter: the bar caters to students at the university of alabama. three students were injured. witnesses say it was a chaotic scene as shrapnel hit victims. >> glass was busting. >> reporter: police say the suspect may have wounded

another person in the night. bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> and police are not releasing the suspect's name until charges are filed. nice gains on wall street today. the dow was up 78, the nasdaq up 13. let's go to new york with the cbs money watch update. >> painting a picture of the economy in the mid-year report. he said the fed is ready to take further action but no clue about what steps to take or when. strong earnings from mattel and goldman sachs and coca-cola are positive. homeowners are more positive. there's confidence among homeowners with a five-year high and homes will pick up even as growth slows.

the weak economy claimed yet another retailer. discount clothing daffy's is going out of business after rival sims closed their door. daffy's plans to close all 19 of their locations in the northeast. a published report said the new iphone will have a thinner screen with sharp images that could lead more room for a larger battery. apple doesn't comment on the product plan. the new iphone is expected this fall. that's your money watch. go to cbsmoneywatch.com for more. i'm alexis. they felt the kid cam last night. the first couple was on the

the steamy sunshine. >> last night, we were outside. sticky. >> it really was. there was a lot of moisture in the air, dew points are very high. temperatures did not drop all that much and then went up from there this morning. this is what we've got for the highs so far today. 100 degrees. we could still get out a degree or two that would tie out the record of 101 degrees. we're way above the average of 88. right now, 98 degrees in baltimore. look at all of those 90s. 9:00 in cumberland. 87 in d.c. the dew points are in the low 60s and they still factor in to make it feel like 100. the dew points are going to be even higher though and the heat index gets closer to 105 or 106 tomorrow afternoon, so that's a big problem for tomorrow afternoon from 11:00 a.m.

to 9:00 p.m. it's hot out there today and the air mass is still in our direction. one thing i want to point out though, look, bismark was in the 70s yesterday and there's a cold front that's moving our way. we're not going to see anything from it today, but tomorrow, the chance from strong to severe thunderstorms moves our way here. here's where it is right now, but we'll see the thunderstorms fire later in the day and the storm prediction center predicted for at least the northern half of the state for severe weather. the biggest threat would be gusty damaging winds. if any watches or warnings come out, we'll be passing them to you. it comes down into the mid- atlantic and then kind of stalls out. it will lose its momentum. the chance again on thursday, not quite as intense and then again on friday still around

station. 4:28. 98 degrees, mostly sunny. i'm vic carter. >> i'm denise koch. here's what's people are talking about. >> getting help from the organization to keep them safe from the summer olympics. reporting live from france. >> reporter: there will be unprecedented security when the olympics get under way in london and the international criminal police organization interpol will be keeping an eye out for trouble. >> the biggest threat people face is the possibility that there's some unknown trained terrorist. >> reporter: in france, the organization gathers intelligence for 190 countries and then police departments worldwide rely on interpol's

database, fingerprints, and most wanted people. we were given a firsthand look at the situation room inside the headquarters. these people are on the terror suspect across borders and keeping track of lost passports, making sure they haven't fallen into the wrong hands. the staff monitors around the world issue an alert and work with local police to prevent airplane boarding and crossing worders. he's with interpol and works with british authorities to make sure who's out there. >> we have a major support team to help identify people that are nonnationals in the u.k. and might not know anything. >> armed with the wealth of information to help keep the upper hand with anyone who tries to cause trouble. wjz eyewitness news. >> interpol officials say 33

passports are in the lost or stolen database and making sure they haven't fallen into the hands of terrorists. there's a large water main break that's causing headaches for business owners. kristy breslin live on the traffic control, but first, mike hellgren has an update from the department of public works. >> reporter: they put cameras down into neighboring water mains to determine there was no problems there and learned that this particular water main that broke was 7 feet below the ground and have not waivered on the three-week estimate to get this finished and a few moments ago, heard from transportation officials who's got a handle on most of the problems but this is going to be a costly fix. let's listen to albert fox.

>> we have 3,000 miles of water line. 40 miles is not that much, but we'll commit ourselves to not face these southern and traffic problems like we are today. >> you can see there's crews book here putting gravel over the hole. this is the contractor working on this right now. the new water main will last 70 years so they won't see these problems in the future and possibly not provide an immediate estimate about how much money we're talking about. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, mike. coverage continues at downtown

99 in d.c., 102 in ocean city. we expect similar temperatures tomorrow and more humidity. that's why we have for tomorrow afternoon from 11:00 to 9:00 all afternoon, a heat advisory for all of the region east of the mountains. 98 to 99 but the heat index probably high as 104 or 105. there may be activity in the sky tomorrow. bernadette looked at the possibility of temperatures. bernadette? >> the heat will continue at 96, 95. so far, we hit 100 degrees. the record is 101 and we have a chance of tieing or breaking the record. and as bob said, the air temperature is the same but with higher dew points, probably going to feel even hotter. it's going to turn to not just the heat but the chance for strong thunderstorms. there's a slight risk area by

>> today marks the syria president. it is indeed a civil war. this video pushes that point home. they labeled the fighting civil war status, placing restrictions on type of violence and war crimes. men are in alley way firing machine guns. the bridge connecting windsor and detroit was closed because of a bomb threat. it came days after the detroit windsor tunnel was closed for another threat that comes from the detroit side. the security sweeps turned up nothing and the bridge is reopened. the family members of two missing girls. it's been days since they've seen them. >> reporter: 8-year-old elizabeth collins and 10-year- old lyric cook were last seen leaving for a bike ride in

evansdale, iowa. it was seen hours after report missing. >> it's as though they disappeared into the broad daylight. >> they came to help with the search. >> obviously, we're worried. we are stressed out. lack of sleep. we are extremely grateful at moments because we've had a huge turnout of people, family, friends, people we don't even know that just want to help. >> we're bracing for the worst but hoping for the best. >> reporter: after draining the lake sunday, they drain it monday hoping to find something and can't imagine who would want to hurt the girls, calling them a joy to be around. >> no enemies. it's just baffling to try to figure out the pieces to the puzzle. it doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: family members say they're cooperating with the

landed upside down. they had to pull the trap driver from the car. a second attendant was inside the ground floor at the time. denise? >> thank you, kai. both people are taken to the hospital and expected to be okay. an incredible scene in new york city. a child falls three stories into the hands of a good samaritan. the video you simply won't believe. >> reporter: she doesn't want her face shown, but this is the mother of a 7-year-old girl at the kony island housing in brooklyn, caught by a good samaritan. >> i heard somebody banging at the door saying somebody was outside on the air conditioner, but i had no idea what was going on because i had my son. >> reporter: she said her autistic daughter was supposed to be sleeping in the bedroom under this window air conditioner she bought the day before sunday but said it

sippy cups can no longer contain bpa. most already stopped due to safety concern and now banning the capital not just baby's, but all canned food, bottles and more. some star power. jada pinkett smith was speaking about human trafficking and slavery. she started an organization called don't sell body. it offers safe refuge for survivors of human trafficking. she spoke to the human relations committee. we got more on the drought in the midwest and the dangerously dry conditions that may have an impact on the price from everything including food and gasoline. >> the biggest drought is leaving from ohio to no rain.

>> you can see firsthand how completed, how serious this matter is, this drought. >> the department of agriculture estimates 40% of the crop is in poor condition. it's bound to have a ripple effect on the economy. >> there's no question, this is a major drought that's going to cost tens of billions of dollars. >> corn accounts more than 90% of the feed grain production. the cost of feeding and maintaining cattle goes up, which lead to prices higher, hitting consumers at an already tough economic time. these prices alone could reach record levels and stay there until 2015. >> out of our paychecks, we have to spend more on food and less spending in the general economy. >> that's not all.

>> look outside right now, it's clear but hot out there. >> luckily, today's dew point is not nearly as high as it can be this time of year. south of us, it's a lot more humid but that will be with us tomorrow. almost as hot as today, but the humidity will be higher, the dew point will be higher to make it a lot more uncomfortable than it is now. 98 at the airport. 63 is the dew point. expect it to be the upper 60s tomorrow. it will sweaty hot afternoon. south southwest wind at 7. currently 82 and then 97 in cumberland and then by the ocean, a little cooler at 89 degrees. locally, most places at least

in the low to mid 90s. bel air at 99 and then a little cooler by the bay. temperatures at 82 or 83 degrees. so far this afternoon, the official high is 74 this morning. our average high now is the warmest weak of the entire year on average. 88 and 67. those are the averages right now. the record is 101 and record low is pretty low there, 58 degrees. that's the coolest it's been on this date in july. southwest and west winds. now, tomorrow the winds will shift a bit but still bring in plenty of heat and still heat and humidity in the south. there's the funnel boundary, relief in central canada and portions of the great lakes. slowly approach us late tomorrow and thursday and with it, a risk of some thunderstorms. you mentioned earlier some can be strong to severe with all

the heat and humidity, that front coming in to the west of us and you can see it along the river in portions of kentucky. cloud cover and the front to the north will impact the weather. not quite as hot on thursday because the front will be on the region, but the risk of more shower and thundershower activity could linger into friday which is good because we need the rain. there may be some areas to pick up drenching downpours tomorrow night and again thursday. any of the rain will help and cool things down for tomorrow. 5555 is the sunrise and yes, the days are getting shorter. up there, a warm night in the mid to upper 70s. some neighbors at low 80s in the cities. tomorrow, almost as hot as today, but more humid. make it feel very uncomfortable
