wild weather, a storm causing problems across maryland. the damage and the chance of more storms. good afternoon. i'm jessica kartalija. here's what people are talking about today. record breaking heat followed by severe storms. we're coming off a very extreme 24 hours here in our region. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. tim williams is in the first warning weather center tracking live doppler radar. first we go to derek valcourt with more on the damage those fierce storms caused around the state. good afternoon. >> reporter: hi. the storms that rolled through last night nowhere near as powerful as the ones we saw on june 29th but the storms that rolled through last night did knock down some trees, some power lines and ef -- even sparked a couple of house fires. >> what started out as a scorcher of a weather day with record breaking heat. >> it feels like you're in a furnace. >> it's like walking into a sauna. >> soon took a wild and wicked turn. from chopper 13 you can

see the line of storms stretch across the region bringing intense rain and at times fierce lightening. it was a lightening bolt that struck the home of edward thomas and his wife. >> i was looking out the back door and saw sparks like a flare going off back. i yelled to my wife we've been hit by lightening. >> as the two made their way out and called 911 fire began to damage their home. firefighters got the blaze under control but not before extensive damage. >> what's not burnt is water damaged. >> high winds took out this massive tree in washington dc knocking out power. winds caused officials to shut down the bay bridge during rush hour. >> reporter: bge reports several thousand people lost power during last night's storm but all of them have been turned back on. back to you. >> thank goodness for that. thank you. it's warm outside today but

not as hot as yet. people are heading back outside to work out or just to enjoy a stroll out there. taking a live look outside now, clouds are covering the inner harbor and little to no sun out there. wjz is live with extensive first warning weather coverage. marty is in the out back, tim williams is in the weather center. >> definitely on the improving side of the weather now. the hot temperatures, of course we hit a record yesterday of 104, nowhere near as hot. first warning live dollar -- doppler radar shows there's nothing in the state. we have some storms kind of progressing in this area. because the front that's responsible for all of this change has not completely cleared the area, so we're going to have the chance of showers and maybe some thunderstorms through the afternoon. it's important to note -- take a look at our watches and warnings, we have none in place. the

national weather service has not issued heat advisory, storm watches for any of us through this afternoon. that's a good thing. it tells you we're on the improving side of the forecast. now, how have those storms impacted our temperatures? that's another big part of our forecast for today. for more on that, sending it out to marty. >> reporter: good afternoon. let's take a look at the temperatures because they do tell the story of this noon hour. they tell you basically how intense the weather has been the past couple of days. it's 8 87 on tv hill, that's our normal daytime high. let's take a look at some other numbers that will round out the story. with the humidity we can still throw a heat index down this noon of 93. we are looking for a heat index this afternoon in the mid 90s, actually 10 degrees cooler heat index wise than yesterday. right now it's 11 degrees actually cooler than this time yesterday. so, yeah, we're on the improved side of the front. when you look at the numbers and

morning after george zimmerman sat down with his attorney for his first television interview. >> i feel that it was all god's plan. >> in his interview with fox the neighborhood watch volunteer recounted how he called police after seeing martin in his apartment complex last february. he claims the unarmed 17-year-old approached him and started throwing punches, breaking his nose. >> he said you're going to die tonight [beep] >> zimmerman said he felt his life was in danger and he had no choice but to use his gun. >> i do wish that there was something, anything i could have done that wouldn't have put me in the position where i had to take his life. >> he's looking to place the blame upon trayvon and he's the one that made the decision to get out of the vehicle that night. >> martin's parents charge zimmerman's story is full of inconsistencies and believe they targeted his son because he's black. they said they can't accept zimmerman's apology because he has no regrets. >> i just don't believe what he

says. it hurts a great deal. >> zimmerman faces a charge of second degree murder. he's free on a $1 million bond. >> zimmerman also said he can't imagine what martin's parents must feel like and he prays for them every day. it's back to work for city crews trying to repair the water main break downtown. the broke line was identified as high risk but there were no immediate plans for repair. now crews are replacing 700 feet of pipe. it will be 3 weeks before light street reopens between baltimore and lombard. the repair of another city water main is prompting mandatory water restrictions one county. mary is live in the news room with the details. >> reporter: we're talking about water restrictions. the ann arundel county department of public works issued mandatory water restrictions in northern and western restrictions of ann

arundel county. that means no out door water use and indoor use. residents are being told not to wash their cars at home or sidewalks or decks. violators could face a fine up to $125. >> voluntary restrictions are also in place for howard county. the city's police and security camera system is getting a boost. a new program is giving the department quicker access to private security cameras at businesses and homes. it allows businesses to incorporate their cameras into the city watch system. those interested can join the program by registers their security cameras with the mayor's office. today high school and college students are marching asking the public to support the maryland dream act. it's a new state law offing in state tuition to undocumented students. maryland voters will have their say on the issue on the november ballot. under armor honors a

dew point that's still a lot of moisture. we're still in a heat index in the low 90s, about 93. a little warmer in the city. 59% 59 per -- 59% humidity. right now 29.94 is the barometer. around the state temperatures ranging from about 79 in oakland to about 87 is about the highest -- actually, no, 89 in ocean city has just clicked over to 91. around the immediate metro area, 85 westminster, 87 columbia and rock all, 87 annapolis and kent island. the wind is around high pressure trying to build around north to the front that has tried to push through but that has not quite cleared the area yet. it has stalled out, a portion around us is trying to

get around. the low that's driving all of this, the warm front in front of it, the low here and then the cold front that's trailing is going to present some chances for drenching rains through out the next few days. tomorrow a better chan. -- chance. on saturday a chance of showers and thunderstorms as well. in the meantime as long as that low is is there we're going to have showers riding it and some storms from the west like a highway, will follow it in. you don't see a lot of very bright red colors. these are not severe storms. we're not expecting the se expecting -- the severity. we'll start to see some clearing, still chances of thunderstorms for the forseeable future. 92 today, a couple of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. 70 tonight, mostly cloudy and then the clouds stay with us tomorrow, another chance for thunderstorms but look at the temperatures dropping down into the 80s, which is finally

in today 's wjz health watch a new study questions whether surgery is is the right treatment for some prostate cancer patients. they found surgery does not appear to make any difference in survival rates. many doctors believe watching and waiting is the better option because surgery can come with serious side fe ekts. -- e ffects. research at the mayo clinic linked fatty cells to a disease.
