midnight showing of the new batman movie. >> we may have a number of people dead inside the theater. >> reporter: refused to comment on his hair painting red and calling himself the joker. he was dressed head to toe in body armor. he pointed directly at the face. >> i jumped forward into the aisle and waited for him to go up the stairs. >> reporter: police say holmes fired an assault rifle, a shotgun and at least one handgun during the attacks. some went through the wall into another theater. a man in a blood-soaked shirt and a child in the batman shirt were among them. corbin dates was in the front row. >> i felt it on my leg. >> reporter: he was dropping out of a graduate program in

neuroscience. police found explosives by his nearby apartment. >> his apartment is booby trapped with various devices and apparent trip wires. >> reporter: the survivors include a 3 month old baby. >> she was shot. >> reporter: the suspect's family is cooperating with police and say their hearts go out to the victims. and colorado's governor called the rampage the work of a deranged mind. the suspect is due back in court monday. teresa garcia, back to you. >> thank you, teresa. our complete coverage with vic. he has emotional stories of survival. vic? >> it was in the moment. the shooter walked into the theater and opened fire. and we, of course, will have a story on that for you very

soon. this was the worst since the attack back in 1999. we'll get story for you, mair. >> that shooting scene in lyttelton is close to aurora. >> here's the latest on the tragedy in aurora. 71 people were shot, the largest mass shooting in u.s. history. 12 people confirmed dead. 58 others hurt. james holmes was arrested without incident in the parking lot of the movie theater. his motive at this time is unclear. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the movie theater massacre. stay tuned tonight at 8:00 with special edition of 48 hours. scott pelley will be in aurora. a man on a wrongful death lawsuit suspended. denise in the newsroom. >> the lawyers filed to stay

the lawsuit until the criminal case against him ends. the hearing is for late august just before his sentencing for second-degree murder. he was convicted of killing love in may of 2010. she filed the civil lawsuit in april and against the commonwealth of virginia and u.v.a. athletic department claiming the coaches ignored the erratic behavior >> coroner confirmed died of blunt force trauma. let's take a live look outside. rain clouds are moving as you in the video. mike hellgren with the latest. let's go first to bob turk who is tracking more on radar. bob? >> right now, some light rain

and drizzle. some heavier showers and then light shower activity through the city. very light shower continues for the next hour or two. nothing heavy, no storm activity until we get far west around the hancock area. some showers there but moving pretty much off to the northeast. we can track these for you. there's hancock and flintstone moving up towards pennsylvania out of the maryland region and some areas may see heavier rain. still activity out to the west and because of the possibility of some more heavy showers late tonight, there is in fact at least a flash flood watch in effect. one, two, three inches of rain that fell in a short period of time. we'll look at some of the rainfall numbers for you coming up. kai? >> bob, thank you.

coverage continues with mike hellgren. the storms keep hitting maryland. >> water just inundated this area last night. it got into homes, garages, cars and many people spent the morning cleaning up. >> reporter: the blinding rain overwhelmed drains in baltimore as it cut power to more than 30,000b.g.e. customers. >> i said, what's happening? i thought we were under attack. >> it sounded like a war. >> reporter: this video shows the peak of the storm in knee- high water flooding several cars. some were bold enough to plow through it. >> reporter: the water has receded and they spent hours trying to clean up all the debris to cover the roadway.

>> you could have a canoe going down any of these streets. >> they're not the only ones. part of the roof in the hilton collapsed down the street. b.g.e. crews worked through the night to repair the line. >> our center is up and running. we continue to monitor the weather. >> reporter: he monitors the weather. >> it's either the litter or leaves. the city can't keep up, especially with the way b.g.e. crews are having it tough. >> reporter: like many, he'll keep an eye on the ominous sky knowing how bad it could get in an instant. there was no major damage to artscape, but it's been an eventful few weeks. >> it feels like we can take a deep breath, mike.

continuing with tim williams with a look at rainfall totals. tim? >> mary, we've seen the rain totals impress ive around the state. the official reporting station at b.w.i. marshall only gets a little bit when everybody else is getting a lot. they had one inch out of the last storms that rolled through here last night. look at the totals. 3.16 inches in 24 hours. almost a 4 1/4 inches. 3.35 around long green and 3 1/4 at science center. they sit and dump a lot of rain at a bit of time. if you wonder why the thunderstorms seem to be stronger than typical, think of the weather we've had. weather is all about balance. we've had extremely high temperatures, extremely high dew points with a lot of moisture that's the fuel for

turned into a dangerous situation. showing little regard for the lives around him through the streets. daryl watson is the man is the white tank top in police custody after crashing into a car with anne arundel county police on the trail. >> he was located hiding inside of an abandoned home. >> reporter: in baltimore city, officers tried to stop watson after he sideswiped a car and kept going. police followed him and on 97 south toward anne arundel county. baltimore police called their their pursuit and called anne arundel county. he drove every ratically on the interstate and you can see he came close to hitting several cars on the road. >> it's a dangerous situation, not just in our county but other areas with the way he was

driving. >> reporter: speeding through residential neighborhood and hopes to make a left turn but smashes into a sedan, the driver left stunned. >> justice prevailed, you know? >> reporter: charged for drug possession after 11 violations just yesterday. >> any related charges. >> reporter: police say the vehicle watson was driving at the time was not stolen. and tonight, watson remains in jail. kai, back to you. >> rochelle, thank you. watson is expected to face charges in baltimore city as well. maryland lost 11,000 jobs in june according to the u.s. department of labor. that makes this the fourth straight month of employment decline. maryland's unemployment rate rose in june from 6.7% in may but the jobless rate remains better as a whole which has a

>> rainy and 73 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a gunman opens fire in a crowded movie theater killing 12 in colorado. our complete coverage on the aurora tragedy continues with vic carter. with more on an emotional story of survival. vic? >> it was a scene of chaos and confusion. the moment after the shooting walked into the theater and opened fire. the shooting murder was at the showing of the new batman movie in aurora, colorado. there's a great deal of attention on the suspect's apartment. >> we're concerned about getting any evidence there is. >> witnesses experienced an emotion tragedy that will last longer. one man said two of his friends were hit by gunfire. >> one of my friends was

skinned on the neck. he's okay but at the hospital. and another skimmed on the long, but she's okay as well. >> a little girl was shot. >> she told whoever she was talking to that she saw bullet holes in the little girl's back. >> i was with my buddies and a little bit after we showed up to the lobby, we heard gunshots and almost sounded like a fully automatic weapon. >> this is the worst massive shooting since the attack in 1999 that was 12 miles away from the scene. >> we'll have much more including reaction from president obama. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads at wjz traffic control. kristy? >> the roads are just packed.

the beltway has been a problem for most of the afternoon. delays begin in the harrisburg expressway. 13 miles per hour they're going at. frederick road to security boulevard in that direction and north 95 begins at 32 to 395 and that delay just continues for northbound 95 picking back up again at the 895 white marsh boulevard. as far as the harrisburg expressway, heavy there from schwawn. you can see things are bumper to bumper. that begins back at 404 and goes to the bay bridge.

the region late tonight, maybe after 10:00 or 12:00 with heavier showers. that's one of the reasons we still have a flash flood watch in effect through late tonight, even though right now, it's very quiet with some of the activity might making it into the region later on tonight. there's some heavy echoes out there as you can clearly see from john's town to athens, ohio to the west. 70 degrees. it's a lot cooler. dew point is the upper 60s. 72 in bel air. pleasant temperatures all weekend long, temperatures are not that extreme. sunday, might get close to normal. looks possible. east/northeast winds with all of the cooler ocean air into the region. 21, 15. we've got a nice cool breeze around the area but this is a

stable air mass. no thunder or lightning. back to the west, more instability. we could see thundershowers across the area. rain to the north of us. to the west, still an area of low pressure that's passing the frontal boundary. showers, look at that. popping up from pittsburgh right through eastern ohio. it's a skinny line but might start sagging this way. if that happens, we could see the showers and training thundershowers which could bring heavy rain tonight. hopefully it breaks up. there's instability to the south and west of us. so this front sagging slowly

premiere of batman. there was a gas mask on the face. witnesses thought he was a stuntman until he started firing and hitting people. james holmes, 24-year-old suspect, did not put up a fight in the parking lot. the university of colorado released his photo saying he was dropping out of the graduate program in neuroscience. this shooting spree forced president obama and republican challenger mitt romney off the campaign trail today. danielle nottingham reports for wjz, both use their already scheduled events to express condolences with the victims. >> reporter: president obama took the stage in fort myers florida to talk about the spree in colorado instead of the campaign. there are going to be other days for politics. this is, i think, a day for

prayer and reflection. >> reporter: he asked for a moment of silence. >> michelle and i will hold our girls tighter tonight and i'm sure you'll do the same with your children but for those parents that are not so lucky, we have to embrace them and let them know we'll be there for them as a nation. >> reporter: both the president and mitt romney campaigned at colorado tv stations to pull their negative ads out of respect for the shooting victims. mitt romney canceled his event and spoke about the shooting. >> ann and i join the president and the first lady and all americans in offering our deepest condolences for those lives that were shattered in a few moments. >> reporter: mike coffman lived near the movie theater where it happened. >> my family won't be the same and i don't think america will be the same. >> reporter: it reignited the

gun control debate this year. >> if we had fewer guns, we would have fewer murders. >> reporter: he wanted to show leadership on gun violence. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the national theater owners association said their members will review procedures in the wake of this shooting. vic is in the newsroom with rob winehold of the fallston group with more on how the situation was handled. vic? >> thank you so much, mr. winehold, for joining us as always. we'll talk about this particular situation. we've got a movie theater, it's packed. people are coming and going. is it possible to protect a place like that? >> any place, whether it's a nightclub, museum, mall, it's a hard venue to protect with a motivated criminal that's

intent on trying to kill or seriously injure other people. in this case, you want to pay attention and have well observant teams and be in place to protect the venue itself. we always say the first order of leadership is safety, make sure you're able to protect and be responsible. >> it appears right now that the police departments did everything they could and followed up quickly on the arrest as well as going to the department. >> from a law enforcement perspective, they responded within 90 seconds, were able to very quickly apprehend the suspect in the case, find out information about the apartment, pull in federal and state resources to go ahead and try to very we cannily but also safely enter the apartment with bomb technicians to try and figure out what may have occurred leading up to this

old from pikesville and then waited for police. now the widow released this statement today to wjz saying "i would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to the family who lost loved ones in last night's horrific shooting. everyone involved is asking why. well, the answers will be long and coming if ever and even if the answers don't alleviate the pain." he is currently in a mental hospital. marking just one week to go until the opening ceremony and british security is on high alert. as msnica villamizar msnica villamizar reports. >> the royal marine into the

landmark. he will spend the night with the queen's crown jewels and this year's olympic medals. the latest test of olympic security was as it drew closer to the capital. police tackled a man who tried to capture the torch during his journey to the stadium in east london. thousands of extra british soldiers were called in to help after a private security firm couldn't draft enough guards. some of the troops will be at these places. but the military is controversial. >> it was supposed to be the security guards, so it is a bit of a shamble, but it's been solved. so as long as it's secure. >> reporter: another olympic hurdle. border agents are threatening to walk off the job before the opening ceremony. >> i think the union leaders should be ashamed of

military officials say daniel rodriguez was killed with another soldier when their vehicle was struck by an i.e.d. he was a 10 year army veteran on his second tour of duty in afghanistan. he's survived by his woof wife and two children. there was an emergency landing. eric report it is intense moments were all caught on camera. >> reporter: the images on their cell phone are still startling. >> i'm going to reevaluate my life insurance and will. no joke. >> reporter: the pyles were going to o'hare. >> smoke started to come down from the ceiling and then we freaked out. >> it's just an intense burning. my eyes, my throat.

>> reporter: the crew radioed the tower. minutes minutes later, the passengers scrambled to leave the plane. several others jumped out. >> there was confusion as to what to do with the door? we're yelling, throw it. >> we're standing on the wing of the plane. it's far down to the ground. >> is there a ladder? chute? nothing. no instruction really. i just sat down and slid off the wing and turned around and caught my wife. >> they escaped unhurt but one passenger injured an ankle.
