scene of the crime. police returned to the colorado theater. >> the evidence investigators are looking for in their worst mass shooting in u.s. history. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> and i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> there is a flurry of activity at the site of the movie theater massacre today. wjz has complete coverage. mike hellgren has more on a victim who plans to attend school right here in maryland. but we start with teresa garcia in aurora, colorado, with more on the investigation. >> reporter: federal investigators were back at the crime scene today. they were processing evidence at the theater where a dozen people were killed and 58 others injured. a tow truck was seen hauling a car from the 16th century parking lot. the boyfriend of the woman who owns the car, was killed. police returned her keys, along with her blood-soaked purse.

investigators for the defense have asked to be allowed into the theater. they also want access into the apartment of the suspect, james holmes. the government also wants a psychiatric evaluation of holmes. >> the first funerals will begin this week. but in the midst of all of the sadness in aurora, there is also good news. >> reporter: katie medley gave birth this morning to a son named hugo. her husband, caleb, was shot in the eye, and is being treated in the same hospital. >> he will close his hands, heel will squeeze, and he's given a thumbs up. he is going to fight through this so he can be with his newborn son as much as possible. >> reporter: the immediatelies do not have medical insurance. and the families have been told that their bills could reach up to $2 million. they have set up a website to raise money. >> he needs to get better. because he needs to be a dad. [ crying ] >> reporter: more than $70,000

has been raised so far. and updates on caleb's condition are being posted on facebook. in colorado, teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> 15 remain hospitalized, five in critical condition. arounderson -- anderson was shot inside the theater. she was about to go to maryland. >> reporter: she was just weeks away from attending graduate school here at the university of maryland. now she's recovering at a hospital. >> reporter: petra anderson is among the victims. a promising musician and composer, was headed to maryland for the graduate program in july. she is lucky beab to be alive. to be alive. >> >> you may have seen my sister online in the last couple of days. >> reporter: her sister chloe made this video, asking for donations. >> thank you for letting this

joker know that he may have started this story, but we're taking it back. >> reporter: her story is nothing short of miraculous. it traveled up her brain, part of a benign birth defect she's had her entire life. it skipped all of the healthy brain cells. >> our family has been shaken by the events of last friday. but we have not been broken. >> reporter: but it had been especially difficult for anderson's family. her mom is suffering from four different types of cancer. she's fighting for her own life while thankful her beloved daughter still has hers. >> reporter: so far, people have donated more than $100,000 for her recovery. at the university of maryland college park, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: petra's mother hasn't left her side and said she won't until she has to leave for her own cancer treatment at the end of the month. stay with wjz for complete

coverage of the complete tragedy in auror a. we'll have the latest from victims and police at wjz.com. first warning weather is watching the skies as a severe thunderstorm watch is now in effect for much of maryland. here's a live look outside. it is humid and mostly overcast right now. let's go right to meteorologist bernadette woods, tracking live doppler radar for us. >> hello. yes, we're going to go to first warning doppler radar. and start off, just issued a severe thunderstorm warning for york county. those severe thunderstorms are coming down to the southeast. and that's going to clip us. what you see moving down away from maryland. still the chance for strong thunderstorms as we head through the next couple of hours. this is probably our best chance. and we may have warnings to issue a little farther. we'll keep you updated on that. watches and warnings in effect for almost the entire state. that's what we'll have now.

1993, she talked with then- president president ronald reagan. >> sometimes they say the best man for a job is a woman. >> it's time for people to realize that women can do anything they want to do. >> she died in her home after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. she went into space twice. but she spent the last 11 years motivating boys and girls through sally ride science, established in 2001. >> i think the kids who are growing up today have an unbelievable opportunity. >> ride was 61 years old. edward lawrence for cbs news. >> sally ride is survived by her partner of 27 years, tam o'shaughnessey. new at 5:00, sally ride's impact here in maryland. the body of a fallen maryland soldier will arrive today. army staff sergeant brandon pepper died in afghanistan.

pepper is a 1999 graduate of kenwood high school. he was killed when his unit came under attack. pepper joined the army reserve and worked as an intelligence analyst at fort meade. funeral arrangements are not complete. new details today about the estate of former governor comptroller william donald schaefer. adam may has more on how hundreds of thousands of dollars are being given to a baltimore neighborhood fund. >> yeah. william donald schaefer's parting gifts will pay for flowers, neighborhood improvements, even flagpoles. $1.4 million will be distributed in small gifts. this permanent gift is part of schaefer's legacy. the civic fund is an extension of schaefer's love for his home town. one of his biggest accomplishments was the push to revitalize the water front. >> coming up at 5:00 and 6:00, a closer look at the communities that will benefit

east central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. the man convicted of gunning down the mother, brother, and nephew of singer-actress jennifer hudson, is sentenced to life in prison. william balfour, the estranged husband of hudson's sister, will serve three life

sentences, plus 120 years on other charges. hudson's family was shot to death in 2008. hudson sat next to her sister at the hearing. balfour offered his condolences and said he was innocence in -- innocent in a statement today. a family is in mourning after a 12-year-old girl is killed in an early-morning explosion. it happened in wilson, new york, about 30 miles north of buffalo. police say five people were inside the home. the siblings each have serious injury. crews are not sure what caused the explosion. but say the home used propane tanks. a case of bullying, aimed at innocence at the kitty city child care center in mississippi. a 9-year-old boy is accused of hitting babies. in this surveillance video, it appears the boy waits for the teacher to turn around. then he attacks the boy and then his sister. the day care worker is under arrest. police say they will not arrest the 9-year-old. spend any time talking with parents or critically ill or

chronically ill children. and at some point, they'll tell you how their hearts would be healed if just for a day or even for a few hours, their kid could have a care-free moment, where their condition is not front and center. mike schuh takes us on such a journey. >> reporter: for half of her life, adriana has been fighting to keep it. >> my daughter has neuroblastoma. >> reporter: now 6, she was cancer-free for 10 months, but the tumor is back. success with drugs brings unsteady truce. >> they don't get to do fun stuff. you know what i mean? it's always medicine, radiation, chemo, stem cell transplants, all that kind of stuff. they don't get to do fun things. >> say ahoy! >> ahoy! >> reporter: that's why this day is so important. >> because it lets her be a kid. >> reporter: this is the pirate ship that cruises the high seas of the inner harbor. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: the casey cares foundation is trying to give these kids all with serious

[ stock bells ringing ] >> reporter: problems in europe continue to drive the markets down. the dow is down 104 points. the s&p is down 12. and the nasdaq is down 27. let's go to new york now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. stocks fell sharply for a second straight day on fears greece is running out of money and spain will soon ask for a bailout. and moody's investor service issued a negative outlook for germany's economy. here in the u.s., ups is warning of a global economic showdown. the package giant is seen as a barometer of the larger economy. ups also cut its outlook for the year. cisco systems is laying off about 1300 workers. that's about 2% of its work force. and devy university will eliminate 570 workers because of a drop in enrollment at its colleges. home values are higher for the first time in five years.

nationwide, home prices rose 3.7% in may, compared to the same time last year. experts believe the housing market hit bottom this year and is finally bouncing back. those extra fees airlines are charging are helping their bottom lines. a new study looked at 50 airlines and found last year, they made about $22 billion from baggage fees and extra charges. that is up 66% from just three years ago. and that's your money watch. for more, go to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. a community is celebrating after a horse trapped for two days is rescued from a well in washington state. this video shows thunder, up to his neck in water. it took the entire mason community county to help get him out. people brought their tractors to help dig a ramp for the horse. he checked out just fine with only a couple of scrapes. and now he's the best. >> he's out. >> thunder might not want to deal with any water.

a live look outside right now. just watching really for the wind at this point. and some storms sort of roll this way. >> the air just feels so thick. >> it is very thick. and mary is always, the wind, the trees. happened with every storm that comes our way. >> the power lines. >> and you speak, as a lot of people speak across the state now, still feeling the effects of the last rounds of storms. there are storms moving our way. not what we saw that day a couple of weeks ago. but a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect, with winds possibly up to 60 miles

per hour, with thunderstorm cells that make its way to the southeast. at about 20 miles per hour. 20 to 30 miles per hour out of york county. that is going to sort of make it across northern parts of baltimore county. but more so harford county. there's another thunderstorm out to the west of that. there is not a warning with it. it is moving down to the southeast also. and we will look for gusty winds. but with this, probably 30 to 40 miles per hour. for the rest of us, we all have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 8:00 tonight. and we have that potential as we head through the evening. so we will keep you updated if any warnings come out. sunshine. clouds building up with thunderstorms coming in. there's a lot more just down to the south. and overall, those winds are up already, despite the thunderstorms gusting, over 20 miles per hour. as far as temperatures go, though, it's another warm one. this is what kai was talking about. the air was very thick. dew points were in the mid-70s at noon. still hanging onto 73 degrees. meant a couple of things for

us. one, it will fuel the thunderstorms that do come in here. and secondly, it provides a lot of moisture. so if there is a downpour underneath any of these, there will be a lot of rain. 89, 89 also in d.c. 98 degrees right now in patuxent. high is 90 degrees. average is 87. we're going down temporarily behind the front. before we go up again. because of what is happening in the middle of the country. a huge heat source. and that heat will be pulled away again in yet another frown. we have this through the evening. a nice break in the action, before this next front moves our way. it will move in with clouds. maybe a chance for a shower or thunderstorm on thursday. then it puts us in that hot air mass, with temperatures right back up in the upper 90s thursday. then this cold front will swing through friday. scattered showers and thunderstorms may be strong with that one. the forecast is like this. on the waters. bay temp, 80 degrees now. west winds at 5 to 10 knots. they've calmed down somewhat. probably going to be gusting during the morning hours with

it's 4:28. 89 degrees with some storms moving through the region. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> all eyes are in london. british authorities are boosting security once again, calling up more military for us. monica villamizar reports for wjz from london. 1200 more british troops are being deployed, just three days before the olympics began. government officials say they're leaving nothing to chance. >> it's better to have those troops on the ground, so were they to be needed, they can swing into action. >> reporter: nearly a fifth of the british military is now working on keeping the summer games safe. soldiers are stepping in, after a private security firm failed to provide enough guards. authorities promised the huge security operation won't overshadow the olympics. >> we make sure the precinct is there. but it is not opressive. the focus is on the athletes,

on the spectator. >> reporter: here in london, the focus is to keep people moving. 4,000 athletes and tourists are arriving now. >> can i help you, you know? and they just love it. it's the international language of sport. >> reporter: cab drivers are already fuming about massive traffic delays on the road ahead. black cabs will not be allowed in the vip olympic lane, designed to help athletes reach sporting events on time. >> i do not understand for the life of me why i can't do my job and take these extra people that they say are coming to the venues they want to get to. >> reporter: those who have already made it to the olympic park are soaking up the excitement and the fun, as they count down to the games. in london, monica villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. >> more than 19,000 british military personnel are involved in securing the london games. that's about 9500 british

troops now in afghanistan. we're learning more about a deadly attack on israeli tourists in bulgaria. investigators say the bomber definitely had help. kai has more on what israel is saying about the attack. >> reporter: what they're saying is israeli leaders say a sophisticated group helped plan the bombing that killed several last week. several international agencies are still trying to determine the true identity of the bomber. seen here on surveillance footage. investigators say they aren't sure how many people he was working with. they do know a man seen on a video, walked onto a bus, with several tourists and detonated a bomb inside his backpack. the blast killed five israeli citizens and a bulgarian bus driver. >> israeli's military chief says iran and hezbollah are involved and are vowing israel will respond to the attack. newlyweds going to see a midnight movie, just days before the birth of their son. but minutes into the film, the masked gunman changed their

lives forever. >> reporter: for katie and caleb medley, this was supposed to be a happy week, with the birth of their first child. but in the same hospital where katie is in the maternity ward, caleb is in the icu, under heavy sedation. at the midnight batman movie, he was shot in the eye. >> he's a strong guy. i'm not used to him -- not used to seeing him like that. i don't want to ever see him like that again. >> seth medley is caleb's brother. >> caleb is stable but still in critical condition now. but he is making some improvement. some small steps. so -- but he's not anywhere near out of the woods. >> reporter: one of caleb and katie's best friends is michael west. >> they're saying you've known katie since kindergarten? >> yes. >> known caleb since -- >> since freshman year, high school. >> and he's a funny guy? >> yeah. he'll make you laugh at the most mundane things.

>> reporter: caleb's family has been told his medical bills could total $2 million. so west is trying to raise money. >> reporter: caleb, he doesn't have any insurance. so i put together a website. >> here's looking forward to being a dad. >> we talk to him because we know he can hear us. we tell him he needs to get better because he needs to be a dad. [ crying ] god. jesus. >> reporter: even under heavy sedation, caleb has somehow managed to make his friends and family feel just a little better. >> he will close his hands. he will squeeze. and he has given a thumbs up. >> katie medley escaped the rampage without any injuries. and yesterday she gave birth to a baby boy named hugo. a roman catholic monsignor is the first church official ever to be convicted for covering up sex abuse amongst

priest. he was sentenced to three to six years in prison today, from 1992 to 2004, prosecutors say lynn moved priests accused of molestation, to new parishes, and never alerted police. lynn is the first u.s. church official convicted of covering up sex abuse claims against the church. a beverage battle is dividing people in new york as the city health department considers a ban on giant-sized drinks. mary has more on what the public is saying. >> reporter: new yorkers seem to be split over whether the mayor is combatting obesity or infringing on their rights. right now, the health board is holding a public hearing about proposed ban on their soft drinks. doctors say sugary drinks and sodas are a leading cause of obesity. but critics say the government has no right to tell citizens how much soda they can drink. new york mayor michael bloomberg said the ban is trying to save lives in an

obesity epidemic that is killing new yorkers. >> they will vote on the issue in september. the presidential race is neck and neck. and the pause in the campaign is over. both president obama and mitt romney are both ready to go back on the attack. as romney attacks the president's foreign policy, the president continues to challenge romney's business record. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from washington. >> reporter: the two presidential candidates are shifting the campaign back into high gear. at a fundraiser in northern california monday, president obama told supporters not to believe what they hear in his opponent's ad. >> they start kind of splicing and dicing. you may have gone a little over the edge there. >> earlier monday, the president addressed the veterans of foreign wars at their convention in reno, touting his commitment to the military and success winding down the war in iraq. >> and today, there are no americans fighting in iraq. and we are proud of all the

americans who serve there. >> reporter: mitt romney is talking to the same group of veterans today. and he's ready to challenge the president's record on defense and foreign policy. >> in dealings with other nations, he has given trust where it is not earned, insult where it was not deserved, and apology where it is not due. >> reporter: romney criticized the president for across-the- board spending cuts the defense department will face in a few short months, and pointed the finger at the white house for leaks about the osama bin laden raid, and other top secret security operations. >> what kind of white house would reveal classified material for political gain. i'll tell you right now, mine will not. >> reporter: romney heads overseas later this week and will make stops in london, israel, and poland. in washington, danielle notingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> and wjz 13 is always on.

you can check in for complete coverage of campaign 2012. we will continue to update you on the candidates and the key issues. former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords gets a little fresh air on a trip to france. giffords and her family posed for pictures after riding to the top of the french alps yesterday. the former congresswoman is still undergoing intense physical therapy after being shot in the head last year. this was the family's first international trip since that shooting. the weather is a lot warmer here in the baltimore area. but there are a few clouds overhead. and severe thunderstorm watches in effect right now. bob is in the weather center, tracking first warning doppler radar. two warnings now. one expires in about eight minutes in southern york county. look at that, moving right into northern baltimore county. you folks in the hereford, parkton, madonna area. another seems to be moving right toward the frederick area. this will really be in effect here all of northern baltimore county.

really, one, two, three separate cells for that particular system. this one is heading down pretty much towards bonaire. still the highest place in baltimore county. the other headed toward madonna in the general direction of the southeast toward west liberty, norrisville, shane and korea, as you can see. we have two storms in the region now. primarriage, looks like -- primarily, looks like this may be the only activity we will be facing. not seeing much more activity. after this stuff goes through the region, over the next few hours, looks like it may actually get pretty quiet. but there is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until officially 8:00 tonight. mainly, i think, now, it will be affecting areas south and east of baltimore, a little later on. as these two storms move through the region between now and about 6:30. it will be eventually heading south of the baltimore and d.c. areas. so looks like some dryer air will move in for at least one day. and that will be tomorrow. denise? >> thank you, bob. let's check on the roads now

with kristy breslin, wjz traffic control. hello, kristy. >> things continue to get busier out there. on the west side inner loop, we're now looking at a delay that stretches from southwestern boulevard to security. on the north side inner loop, stop and go around to harford road. but after that, you should be in for a smooth trip. we still have congestion on northbound 95, from 395 to the fort mchenry tunnel. although the vehicle fired southbound. that is all cleared up. and everything is moving back at the posted speed. as far as accidents go, cold spring lane at charles street. also poplar grove at arunna avenue. and we still have chaos in the city. a lot of congestion because of that water main break. light street remains closed between east lombard. let's take a live look. moving a bit better there at security. this traffic report is brought to you by subway. stop in. only for a limited time. back to you. an amazing show on the water in greenland quickly becomes dangerous for boaters floating nearby.

a tearing wedding rescue effort. two cars and a wedding caravan plunged into the river when a bridge gives way. it happened in cheena.

one -- china. one person was trapped. rescuers were able to use ropes to reach the victims below and get everyone to safety. everyone involved is expected to be okay. the heavy rains are reported to be the worst in china in six decades. a government have thive -- investigative committee says bp focused too much on personal safety at the expense of safety hazards. 11 workers were killed when the rig exploded, causing 200 million gallons of oil to gush into the waters. the committee also said bp did not implement all of the safety recommendations, following a 2005 explosion. a routine traffic stop turns up a cache of guns in maine. the driver said he had just come from the showing of the new batman movie. >> and this big one over here? >> this is a fully automatic assault rifle. >> reporter: some of the most

to do it. >> reporter: two other men have been arrested following threats made during or after watching the new batman movie. new investigation into missing iowa cousins. >> surveillance video has been obtained from an evansville business, which could show the cousins the day of their disappearance. it hasn't been confirmed. their bikes were found on friday, july 13th, the day they disappeared. they were leaving their grandmother's home for a bike ride. surveillance video is the last known picture of the girls after leaving for their ride. >> thank you, kai. the fbi is now analyzing that video. new dash cam this evening of an officer stopping a wrong- way driver by crashing into him. it happened in maine. the state trooper got a call about a car going the wrong way. the car being driven by 88-year- old kenneth gill. the trooper cut the car off

>> we have thunderstorm activity in the region. one severe thunderstorm warning until 5:00. you folks in frederick, literally right over the frederick area. that's where that particular cell is right now. between liberty town and frederick. heading down towards urbana. the other in baltimore county, not a warning. but this storm still has a pretty strong potential for winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour. heading right down 83 toward hereford phoenix, jacksonville. pretty much from -- manchester. that's one that looks like it will move toward the baltimore city area. you can see it moving directly south right now. we have a possibility in the next 45 minutes or so of getting some action across the baltimore metro. and particularly now in frederick. frederick county, that storm moving right into the frederick area, right this minute. they have one over parkton. if you're anywhere in northern baltimore county, you can probably see or hear that lightning and thunder in the

area. maybe brief, gusty winds, 40 to 50 miles an hour. this storm is not as strong now as it was. this is still pretty strong. but the warning will be dropped at 5:00. moving toward the frederick area. warm and humid air. 89, dew point 72. west winds at 21. barometer holding steady. 29.70 inches. right now, 70 in oakland. 91 in ocean city. upper 80s, a little above average. but high dew points, a lot of moisture in the air. so there's a lot of potential for heavy downpours. 89 in annapolis. d.c., columbus. pretty strong west winds. as much these may also begin to tear up these storms a little bit apart. the west winds tend to come down the mountains and they dry out. it's hard to tell whether this system will still be in existence by the time it gets to the city. and next hour, moving south,
