mary is off. here's what people are talking about. breaking news in the vi ripken abduction case. minutes ago, police identified a suspect in her kidnapping case. mike hellgren just finished with speaking with police. >> reporter: kai, this is certainly a significant development in the case. this is the flyer they put out. it advertises a $200,000 reward. it has a picture from surveillance picture of a man who they believe is behind this. they have not given his name. they tell me this came from witness statements given to them. they were able to come up with a picture of the suspect. again, they have not given his name or anything like that. and they are also not releasing exactly where the picture was taken. >> reporter: moments ago,

police released this photograph of the man suspected of abducting vi ripken, the 74- year-old mother of baseball great cal jr. police say ripken was taken from her home tuesday, bound inside her car, and driven around harford and baltimore county for almost 24 hours, before the man dropped her off almost four blocks from her house. >> described him as a white male. we believe him to be tall. age rage between -- we're thinking now between the mid- 30s and early 40s. wears glasses, we believe. the last picture that we have of him that you'll see in the photograph. he was wearing a white shirt. a long white shirt. blue jeans. had a hat on, which looked like it was black and orange in color. >> reporter: ms. ripken thankfully was found unharmed, although a bit shaken. her family is not commenting on this development or any new

young victim. police say the 13-year-old victim made a phone app called grinder. he is being held on $5,000 bail. he's charged with solicitation of a minor. police say he agreed to meet with the young boy ask engage with -- and engage with a young boy. the victim's parents learned about the contact and contacted police. >> baltimore county police want anyone with information to contact them at 410-307-2020. investigators in colorado are looking at what could be a key piece of evidence in the aurora shooting rampage. anna werner reports for wjz. suspect james holmes sent a package, allegedly detailing his plans to kill. >> reporter: the university of colorado denver medical school is disputing reports that a package, allegedly sent by james holmes to a professor, sat in the school's mailroom,

untouched, days ahead of last friday's shooting n. a statement, the school confirmed that it received a suspicious package. but that it arrived on monday. and that it was, quote, immediately investigated and turned over to authorities within hours of delivery. the building was evacuated while the aurora bomb squad dispatched a robot to screen the package. sources say the package contained handwritten papers that holmes addressed to one of his instructors who is also a psychiatrist. in the documents, they say holmes talked about shooting people and even included crude drawings ever a gunman and his victims. >> came here, like they have a super power. >> reporter: video shows holmes before the shooting, giving a presentation at a science camp. aurora officials are under a strict gag order, unable to share information about holmes or the case, but benchers like retired police detective sherman says the new evidence

could provide valuable information. >> the fbi has capable science people. and what they're able to do is look at the writing and discuss and see if it was the ramblings of somebody. are they coherent? what is their background? their education? >> reporter: after looking at holmes' apartment for days, investigators turned the apartment building back over to residents last night. holmeps -- holmes' residence, which was once stringed with a bunch of booby traps, is now empty. >> the police and fbi and atf already took that stuff out. >> holmes is not cooperating with police. an accident creates a major mess during this morning's rush hour. a tractor-trailer carrying beer overturned in the northbound lanes. the truck hit the guardrail before coming to a rest near old hundreds road in clarksville around 4:00 a.m. no one was hurt. the road was closed for several hours. now open to traffic.

it's mostly sunny. 96 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a hearing for a murder case turns violent in missouri. video shows two men throwing punches outside the courtroom in jackson. take a look. apparently the son of the murder suspect confronted the man in the orange shirt. now, after he testified against has father in court, they went at it for a few minutes before both men were arrested. a lightning strike sparks a monster fire on the rooftop of a new york apartment building. hundreds of firefighters on the scene in brooklyn. the blaze was first reported around 10:30, and quickly escalated to six alarms. at least 15 firefighters and one civilian were hurt. the extent of their injuries is still unknown. michael jackson's mother no longer has custody of his children, at least for now. edward lawrence reports for wjz, a judge in los angeles has appointed one of jackson's

surged 6%. twitter suffered its second worldwide outage in less than two months. millions of twitter users across much of the globe were unable to send much of their tweets throughout the day. twitter gave no reason for the outage. the site is expected to see a huge spike in tweets friday when the olympic games get under way in london. ford is recalling nearly half a million escapes and mavericks, to fix sticking gas pedals that can affect a crash. the worldwide recall with 3- liter v-6 engines. the government says 13 crashes and one death have been reported. a severe drought in the midwest will mean higher prices at the supermarkets. the government says you should expect to pay 4 to 5% more for beef next year. higher prices for milk, eggs, chicken and pork is also expected. that's because the drought devastated the corn crop. farmers use corn to feed their livestock. it's also used in about 70% of the food we eat, as well as

all right. here's your ship, bob. hop on it. >> sit by the pool right now. out on the water, it's certainly cooler than on the land. but the difference today and yesterday is the humidity. the dew point is in the mid-70s yesterday. upper 40s and low 50s. and that made a huge difference in the way you feel. now, there are thunderstorms to the north of us. in fact, some pretty big ones across pennsylvania right now. most of them are moving off to the east and northeast. some of the individual cells are very strong. had wind gusts up there, over 50 to 60 miles an hour. it's a little hard to say whether this will survive all the way across the state of

pennsylvania. looks like garrett county will probably see some of these storms later this evening. some may also pop up ahead of that main line of storms. we do have a chance of thunderstorm activity in the region later this evening. and even earlier this evening, something could pop up ahead of that main line of storms. hopefully it will weaken across the mountains, which it's expected to do. it's up to 96 at the airport now. but the dew point is in the mid- 70s. 74. 96. 74-degree dew point. feels like 107. yesterday at this same time, we had 87. and it felt like 84. big, big difference. humidity, 49%. southwest winds 13. barometer 29.67. just beginning to fall. 87 in oakland. 96 in elkton. 86 ocean city. and locally, temperatures running in the upper 80s to low to mid-90s. not talking 100-degree temperatures. close to it in d.c. at 98. still hot enough, way above our average, which is now 87 degrees. southwest winds.

hopefully those southwest winds will help keep those storms pretty much to the north. although they are moving off to the east and southeast somewhat. so we'll have to keep that in the forecast. to our north, york, pennsylvania, all the way over to western pennsylvania, there is a severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00 tonight. this morning, big activity across new york. light showers across northern maryland. kept a lot of clouds. and they did keep temperatures down a bit. and it did clear out. there we are. the heat and humidity back. big line of thunderstorms. had a few very severe thunderstorms in new york new york state. some of this stuff is going to move across pennsylvania. if it survives, we could see thunderstorm activity here this evening. tomorrow, with that front comes closeto the area. still the heat and humidity not as high as today. but again, a risk of thunderstorms. some could be locally strong. and on saturday, still a chance of scattered shower and thunderstorm activity. west winds on the bay. 5 to 10 knots. bay temp around 80. tonight, perhaps widely scattered showers.

it's 4:30. mostly sunny and 96 degrees. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> at least eight states, including maryland, are conducting investigations into whether a former hospital employee, infected patients with hepatitis c. now, thousands of people are being encouraged to get tested. >> authorities say this man is a serial infector. david quikowski was arrested last week, accused of infecting at least 30 people at a new hampshire hospital with hepatitis c, by stealing syringes and drugs for his own use. then allowing the same needles to be used on patients. >> he knew he had hepatitis c, as of at least june 2010.

he continued to divert drugs and permit painted syringes to be used on patients under his care. >> reporter: 6,000 patients at this new hampshire hospital, where he worked as a med tech. but the risk does not stop there. other states where the suspect worked, include michigan, new york, arizona, georgia, and kansas, are investigating and recommending patients who may have had contact with quiidkowski, get checked. >> there's no telling how many people this affects at this point. >> reporter: according to the centers for disease control and prevention, hepatitis c is contracted through contaminated blood and can cause serious liver damage. hepatitis c is not curable, but is treatable. a violation has been placed against the staff, alleges there was documented evidence of his illegal drug use that was never properly investigated. quiidkowski pleaded not guilty

to obtaining controlled substances by fraud and tampering with a consumer product. federal authorities say more charges could be forth coming. he is being held without bail. i'm elizabeth coridon reporting. >> quiidkowski denies the allegations, saying he is scared of needles. a judge orders the fort hood shooter to shave his beard by the start of his trial or he will be forcibly shaved. >> reporter: major nidal hasan was held in contempt of court wednesday and fined $1,000 during the pretrial hearing. hassan has repeatedly refused to shave his beard for more than a month in violation of military regulation. he is a muslim and refuses to shave, in keeping with koranic teaches. he has been in custody since 2009. he is charged with gunning down 13 people at fort hood in texas. but he's still in the army and still draws a paycheck. denise? >> thank you, kai. hasan faces a possible death penalty if convicted in those

shootings. sizzling summer temperatures are heating up in maryland. wjz found many people trying to fight off the heat at the inner harbor. good place to be. take a live look outside right now. most of this morning's clouds have moved out, allowing temperatures to climb. let's go to bob turk, tracking temperatures in the first warning weather center. take a look at temps now. this is the highest we've we've seen all day now. highest, 96. 86 in ocean city. and 82 up in elkton. excuse me. up in oakland. and pax river at 98. temps today are running, compared to yesterday, about 10 degrees warmer at this time. however, the heat index yesterday at this hour was 84. now, the heat index is up to 107. that's the highest it's been all day long. and because of that, we have a heat advisory in effect until 8:00 p.m. also, to the north of us, severe thunderstorm watches in effect because, well, look what's happening over pennsylvania.

call for help in jeopardy. >> reporter: boats out of the coast guard station in baltimore answer radio distress calls all the time. but earlier this summer, six of those calls were phony. >> it comes over vhf channel 16. and the caller says mayday, mayday. and all six calls have been determined to be the same male voice. all of these calls have been determined to be coming from the middle river area of baltimore. >> reporter: and the coast guard responded, dispatching boats and helicopters on wild goose chases that have cost $70,000. because second guessing there isn't an emergency, isn't an option. >> when we don't take those seriously, that will be the one time that it is an actual true distress call. >> reporter: two years ago, the coast guard unveiled its new communication center. this technology is why they know the hoax call is coming from middle river. here's how. >> it registers in our computers a line of bearing. and it tells us that that boat is somewhere on that bearing. >> reporter: but to find the exact spot, the radio call needs to be picked up by a second receiving tower.

>> so we can go from many square miles to almost a pinpoint if we have multiple lines of bearing. >> reporter: but those multiple lines have not appeared with hoax calls possibly because the calls are so quick. >> that's all we get. and silence on the line after that. >> if the person on the hoax calls thinks it's funny, no one else is laughing. >> when crews are out there responding to this, we can't respond to other legitimate cases that may be out there. and the crews that are searching could be in danger as well. >> it's a crime punishable by up to six years in prison. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> the coast guard has a tip line and is asking the public for help. anyone with information about the hoaxes is being urged to call. a virginia boy loses his leg in a lawn mower accident. timothy was help his father with a job when his foot ended up slipping under neath a mower. doctors ended up having to amputate part of his leg. the family is moving toward

silence. a tv station agrees to hand over video footage that could aid in the search for two missing cousins. jessica kartalija has more. >> they approved the raw interviews with leera cook's mother. during the interview, missy morrisy explained why she stopped, saying she had been treated harshly by police. the cousins have been missing for nearly a week now. police say they need that footage to complete their investigation. >> both of cooks' parents have a record. four window washers survive a close call. the men were stranded outside the 35th floor of the high-rise casino in hotel vdarra. they called 911 after their work platform appeared to be slipping. one by one, they were each harnessed and lowered to safety by firefighters. no one was hurt. 25-year-old allegedly

ibm's super computer watson is also being groomed to be a bedside tool for doctors and cancer patients. tanner zakowski lived out of this tiny hybrid for 30 days. an environmental group paid him $1,000 a week, plus a daily allowance, to spend 23 hours a day inside the car. he said he had a hard time sleeping. but otherwise, it wasn't so bad. >> a sky diver is hoping to set a new world record next month. felix baumgartner is training for a freefall dive from 120,000 feet. that's 23 miles above the earth. during the jump, baumgartner will feel temperatures of minus 148 degrees and reach speeds of nearly 700 miles per hour. if he's successful, baumgartner will become the first person to ever break the speed of sound. he'll run into airplanes up there. >> well, let's hope not. >> that's unbelievable. >> not only that. it's a good thing, obviously he
