workplace attack got foiled. a huge cache of weapons. what led police to the suspect. i'm vic carter. mary is off tonight. a shooting. a man was plotting a mass shooting, each called -- even called himself a joker. the plot was foiled. mike hellgren is live in crofton, where the suspect was arrested. >> reporter: vic, this is certainly frightening. and details are continuing to pour in. the man has been identified through various sources as neil prescott. they say he showed frightening behavior, threatening a coworker at his workplace. they say they recovered 25 weapons, including some assault weapons and handguns. they said he did not have a concealed carry permit. now, he referred, they say, to a character in the batman movie.

and that's what really got their attention and made them take this seriously. >> in light of what happened a week ago in aurora, colorado, it's important to know, the community to know, that we take all threats seriously. and if you're going to make a threat, we will take action. >> reporter: during a field interview with their officers, the individual was wearing a t- shirt that said "guns don't kill people, i do." so the multiple threats, the nature of the threats, and that action, together led us to a place where we could get an emergency petition. >> reporter: they say he referred to himself as the joker. charges are pending at this hour. they say they just took him into custody for a mental health evaluation because they believed he was a danger to himself and others in the community. he worked for pitne bows in prince george's county. that's a mail office supply company.

a representative there tells wjz that he hadn't been on the property in four months and they say he was a subcontractor. reporting live in crofton, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news remember. >> and of course, this arrest is no doubt a shock to the crofton neighborhood where prescott lives. our complete coverage continues now. wjz is live. jessica kartalija spent the afternoon talking to people who live there. jessica? >> reporter: well, good afternoon, vic. anywhere from 500 to 700 people live in the upscale apartment complex, where the suspect was arrested. residents there tell us that it's full of young families. and of course, young professionals as well. many commuters to washington, d.c. and baltimore. many neighbors that we spoke with didn't want to go on camera. they say that this is a very close-knit community, as you can imagine. and of course, they're saddened to learn about the entire situation. and quite frankly, very scared. several residents in the apartments were evacuated while police served the search warrant and found more than 20 guns and rifles and 400 rounds

of ammunition inside the suspect's apartment. we also spoke with a retired d.c. police officer, who says that this is incredibly disturbing, as there are several children in the area. and told me that he worries that this could be a copycat crime. we also spoke with a man who lives here the last 30 years. he said he can only recall one other incident where police were involved and of course, even that was minor. they say the entire neighborhood is just shaken at this point. we'll have much more coming up live from crofton, coming up at 5:00. vic, back to you on tv hill. police arrest 28-year-old neil prescott for allegedly planning to shoot up his former employer. more than a dozen weapons are recovered in the prescott home. he is undergoing mental evaluation, and charges against him are pending. stay with wjz for complete coverage about the workplace threat arrest. we'll have the latest coming up live at 4:30. a gunshot takes the life of a young maryland girl.

12-year-old taylor willis of wicomico county, was shot in the head last night. she was shot in her home on state street at this time. the shooting was accidental and a rifle was taken into evidence. an investigation is under way. a heat advisory is in effect for parts of maryland. if you're outside today, follow this man's lead. be sure to take plenty of water with you to stay hydrated. heat did not stop two soccer teams from warming up. players from the liverpool football club will play in an all-premiere league soccer match tomorrow. outside now, there's a mixture of sun and clouds. and of course, it is hot. bob is here now in the weather center with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> today was pretty warm. yesterday was the really hot, humid day. talk about the temperatures. take a look at radar. activities to the north and south. right now, we're just in between. pretty quiet around here. looks like the bulk of the action will pass south of d.c. and to our north. but this stuff in pittsburgh

may get to us later tonight. maybe after 9:00, 10:00 like we saw last night, we could see some widely scattered thunderstorms. and any of them could have heavy downpours and lightning. temperatures, a lot cooler today than yesterday. yes, it's humid but we're only at 87 degrees. dew point is 70. with the temperature of 88. and the dew point of 70, it feels outside like only 93. we did not reach heat advisory criteria this afternoon except extreme southern portions of the region where it got close to 100 degrees. so i do expect that advisory to be canceled. now, as far as yesterday's rainfall, most of the activity was across northern maryland. once again, southern areas had almost nothing. bel air an inch. bel air, sparks, 1.54 inches. airport officially only 23/100ths of anich. and around the columbia area, a little more than half an inch. tonight, once again, widely

scattered steps. other areas won't see a drop. we'll talk about the weekend in a few minutes. vic? >> okay. thank you. stay with wjz and first warning weather for complete coverage. for the latest watches and warnings, or to look at live doppler radar, log onto wjz.com. the search is on for the man who kidnapped the motor of cal and billy ripken. monique griego is live with the latest on this manhunt. >> reporter: police say they have received numerous calls to their tipline and all are being investigated. now, this picture taken from surveillance video is the first big clue police released in the abduction of 74-year-old vi ripken. it's the man police believe took her. she was kidnapped at gunpoint from her home tuesday morning. investigators say she was bound inside her car and driven around baltimore and harford counties for almost 24 hours before being dropped off near her home. now, the fbi, maryland state police, and the harford county sheriff's office, are assisting aberdeen police, who are leading this investigation.

vick? >> monique, thank you. if you recognize the man in the pictures, you're asked to call police. they're offering a $2,000 reward for conviction in this case. members of the general assembly will cut their vacation short and head back to annapolis for more on what the governor calls the people's work. governor o'malley has ordered a special session, topaz an ex-- to pass an expanded gambling bill. >> time to get back to work. >> it's time to create the thousands of needed jobs. it's time to maximize funding from gaming for maryland public education. >> reporter: it's time to gamble. for weeks, the o'malley administration has been trying to build the consensus on the addition of table games, a reduction of a casino tax rate, which has been a sticking point. and the approval of a sixth casino. >> i have made it my mission to call a special session. dedicated to the gaming and to call that session on august 9th. >> reporter: lawmakers are

expected to call a bill that includes table games and to ask voters to allow casino. but the tax rate adjustment is off the table, a move that will apparently make it easier to get the votes past the bill. >> but with that line to you, is the question that will be put to the voters of our state. and that is, do we expand the table games? and also, will there be a sixth site in prince george's county? so the other considerations about adjustments after the voters have their opinion heard, those are all things that kind of happen down the road. >> reporter: if all goes as planned, this will be a big year for maryland voters to tell the general assembly what they think of its work. not only will they vote on gambling, but same-sex marriage, in-state tuition for undocumented students and redistricting. i'm pat warren, reporting from annapolis. now, back to you on tv hill. >> the session begins august 9th and will likely take three days. plenty of time for the board to meet the august 20th deadline

delegation. about 1,000 children joined her for games and exercise at the u.s. ambassador's residence. they played soccer, tennis, and tug-of-war. there were a few first-day glitches as officials rang in the games. fans were turned away from an archery event after purchasing apparently bogus tickets. and a small group of protestors demonstrated against dow chemical. >> reporter: more than 60,000 spectators are filing into the olympic stadium for the $42 million opening ceremony. 302 events will take place in 26 sports over the next two weeks. so this british bash won't be over any time soon. in london, bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> and here's a live look right now at the outside of olympic park in london, where the opening ceremonies are under way. michael phelps is not taking part in the ceremonies. he's resting for his first

it's 88 degrees. partly cloudy in central maryland right now. the complete firstwarning weather forecast is coming up. a car crashes into a home and barely misses a sleeping baby. a woman was asleep in the bedroom with her 2-month-old baby and her 3-year-old son. the black cadillac crashed through the bedroom wall. the children's mother said the

book case likely kept the car from slamming directly into the baby's bassinet. police say the three people inside the vehicle ran away. no one was hurt. when you think of firefighters being injured, the dangers of smoke and flames may come to mind. hazards can be found in many places in old baltimore homes. >> reporter: across from union memorial, a simple medical call turns into a rescue. special units arrive. earlier, a 60-year-old man on the second floor fell down. but now he's dropped 8 feet into the basement of this vacant home. >> as the paramedic steps out of the house, onto the porch, the patient and the paramedic went straight through the floor. the floor literally collapsed. >> reporter: sherry blackout, his work partner, saw it happened. >> it was more surreal. like i'm looking at him, wait thing for the stretcher to come down the steps. and like half of them are gone. and i just started yelling. >> reporter: that rotten porch

was built over the basement. remember, it's an 8-foot drop. >> now, the paramedic was able to get himself together and climb out, requested on his radio for assistance to rescue the patient. >> i'm just yelling, tony being tony! and i get up on the steps and i can see him down on the floor. and then i see that he's okay. >> reporter: see those silver and black holes, they're braces, stopping an additional collapse of this 94-year-old home. the original victim, he's still down there. they secure him on a back board and placed him out. they don't think he suffered additional injuries, but sent him to the hospital in a neck brace to be sure. >> it's unbelievable. like i'm still trying to get past it. >> remember, that's a pro, someone who has seen a lot as a city paramedic. this building, it's now condemned. mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. >> the investigation is ongoing. police believe the man was a squatter. a positive day on wall street. today, the dow jones tacked on another wo00 points -- 200

points. taking the index for the first time since last may. and here's a look at the closing numbers. dow ends the woke up. s&p500 is up nearly 26. and the nasdaq climbed 65. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> stocks rallied strongly for a second day, after the european central bank vowed to save the euro. the dow moved back above the 13,000 level for the first time since may. they shrugged off news that they had business woes as business and consumers pulled back on spending. the university of michigan's consumer sentiment index fell to the lowest level of the year. the survey found people are worried about their jobs and incomes. shares of facebook dropped 16% to an all-time low, after a disappointing profit report. and no guidance on future profits. ebay wants more kids to

here's a live look outside right now. good place to be down on the water. >> anywhere on the water this summer has been a great place to be. now, quite a bit of rain in some areas last night, which kind of cooled and settled down the atmosphere. and it is significantly cooler this afternoon than it was yesterday. take a look at temps right now. at the airport, it's only 88. normal high, then, is 87. yesterday, at this time, we were in the upper 90s. 97. and had a dew point of 74. the heat index of 107. right now, the heat index is

right around 90 to 92. so it's not nearly as stuffy as it was yesterday. it's still humid. but nothing -- 55% humidity. west/northwest winds at 6. barometer 29.82. right now, holding steady. 72 in oakland. feels like a late september day. hot to the south. a lot more sunshine. 94 in d.c. 90, easton. they had just canceled the heat advisory. because we didn't quite reach the criteria for a heat advisory. that doesn't mean it's not hot or humid. but it didn't get as hot as it was expected to be. humidity wasn't quite as hot, temperatures were not as hot this afternoon. 87 in ocean city. and 91 in pax river. locally, basically mid- to upper 80s, which is pretty close to normal. a little closer to 90s really around to the south of us. where there's been a little more sunshine, rock hall, kent island and annapolis. right now, winds all over the place. generally a northwest flow. and if we're heading out tonight, a light flow. if we're heading out to the

ball game right now. there's no shower activity. this afternoon, south of us, a lot of activity in the west virginia-virginia area. and it's kind of redeveloping across virginia and southern portions of the area. looks like that's where the bulk of the activity is going to be tonight. to our north as well, in between, not much going on. later tonight, there is a risk some of these showers will make it over the mountains. still the chance probably after 78:00, -- 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, of a scattered thunderstorm. right now, it's very, very quiet. over the weekend, the front is going to hang through the area until late saturday. and sunday, somewhat dryer air coming in. sunday, i think most of the activity will be done for our region. north winds on the bay. 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, still around 80 degrees. tonight, still a risk of a thundershower. humid, low around 70 degrees, which is above average. 92 tomorrow.

it is 4:30, 88 degrees with a mixture of sun and clouds. >> hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news and here's what people are talking about. wjz continues to follow the breaking news in anne arundel county. where police arrest a man allegedly plotting a mas shooting in a -- mass shooting in the workplace. >> reporter: these are disturbing details. they say he made reference to the joker in the batman movie after what has happened in colorado. they were on high alert. also, they say he had a t-shirt that referenced shootings. we'll take a look at video, including picture of the man who sources identify as neil prescott. they have not formally charged

him, but they say charges are pending in the case. we also have images of some of the 25 weapons authorities found inside his home here in crofton, anne arundel county, including some assault weapons and more than 400 rounds of ammunition. we're told by police that he worked in prince george's county, for a company called pitney bowes, a mail office supply company. he was upset baunited states -- because he was about to be fired. the supervisor called police and they acted quickly. >> reporter: the message here is that if you call your business, if you call a loved one, if you call anybody and you threaten to do harm, kill people, we're going to believe you. and we did. >> reporter: and that's from a news conference earlier this afternoon. police say they really did take this seriously, including evacuating parts of his building just in case something could go wrong there. also, we did speak to pitney

pending. wjz 13, of course, is always on. and you can check in for complete coverage of this workplace threat arrest. for more information any time, log onto wjz.com. well, new developments in the child sex abuse case of former penn state assistant coach, jerry sandusky. a key witness, whose identity was not known during the sandusky trial, is coming forward with his story. ines ferre reports from pennsylvania. >> reporter: jerry sandusky's conviction on dozens of child sex abuse charges was based on the testimony of eight young men. each testified how the former penn state assistant coach offered friendship and football tickets in exchange for physical contact, and in some cases, sex. missing from the witness stand was victim number 2, the young boy whom coach michael mcqueary saw being abused in 2001. he was never named. but now, attorneys representing a man who says he was that boy,

say they will sue the school. in a statement, they say, our client suffered both before and after the 2001 incident. as proof, they have two voice messages sandusky left for him less than two months before his arrest. >> probably ought to just go forward. i would be very firm and express my feelings up front. but -- you know, there's nothing really to hide. >> reporter: the attorneys say sandusky kept trying to control their client, right up until his arrest, offering football tickets as other witnesses testified and telling the young man that he loved him. >> i was just calling to see, you know, whether you had any interest in going to the penn state game this saturday. i hope to talk to you later. thanks, love you. >> reporter: penn state has not commented on the potential lawsuit. sandusky faces life in prison. ines ferre, wjz eyewitness news. >> the attorneys say they will also sue others in connection

with their client's abuse and the, quote, horrific conduct that allowed it to continue. maryland transit administration police are asking for your help to find a man who robbed a person on an mta bus. take a look at surveillance pictures of this man. back on june 6th. police say the man got on the number 54 bus, pulled out a knife and brass knuckled and robbed a person of their cell phone. anyone with information on this man's identity is urged to call mta police. several hospitals are trying to identify patients who may have been infected with hepatitis c by a tramping medical technician. as michelle miller reports, thousands could end up being tested. >> reporter: officials say david quikowski was a serial infector. >> he was working for a kind of temp agency that would send people from place to place. so he worked in many different hospitals, probably a half dozen different places over the last couple of years. >> reporter: one of his alleged

victims spoke to cbs affiliate wbc. >> my daughter just got married. she's going to have children in the future. who knows if i'll be around for them. >> reporter: quikowski, 33 years old, is believed to have tested positive for hepatitis c in june of 2010. he was last employed as a lab technician at exeter hospital in new hampshire, where authorities say he stole fentamil, a powerful painkiller and also exposed patients to the virus. it's called drug diversion, in which he stole narcotics intended for a patient, and injected himself with it. contaminating the syringe. he then refilled the syringe with a different substance, such as saline, which was then injected into the patient, passing on the virus. quikowski's parents told the fbi that he took a lot of prescription drugs. his coworkers were worried about behavior that was

unusual. >> i've observed him sweating, red-placed, blood shot, and according to one witness, unfit to provide medical care. >> now, david quikowski worked at four maryland hospitals, including johns hopkins. a strong summer storm strikes parts of the northeast. crews continue clearing trees brought down by a possible tornado. tens of thousands of people lost power in new york city. the storm is blamed on the death of a 61-year-old man struck by collapsing scaffolding. well, that same storm system did roll through maryland last night. but the storms were not nearly as powerful. right now, it is the warm temperatures we have to deal with. people are trying to find any way to stay cool again. a dragon boat ride at the harbor might work. and a live look outside right now. it's another muggy july evening. will we be forced to stay inside to avoid the heat all weekend. wjz has weather and traffic together. let's go to bob first with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> good news is, they canceled

the heat advisory. because it never got quite as hot or humid, compared to yesterday. take a look at radar. there are thunderstorms to our north and south. looks like tonight will be kind of few and far between. i think later tonight, you might see a few pop-up thunderstorms. right now, all of the action is in virginia and across northern pennsylvania. and it's basically moving from west to east. not really advancing much to the southeast toward our region. so for the time being, it look loosic a quiet night -- looks like a quiet night. we're only at 88 degrees. yesterday at the same time, we were at 96, 97. with the heat index of 107. right now, the heat index is only -- yes, i say "only," compared to yesterday, 93. so the heat advisory was canceled this afternoon. now, as far as rainfall yesterday, some areas, yes, last night really caught some serious rain. almost 2 inches in northern sections of baltimore county. south of the city, downtown that, a little more than half

inch almost. and bwi just a quarter. south of us, almost nothing fell on the lower eastern shore. and not very much either, far western maryland. hagerstown only had 9/100ths of an inch. tonight, areas will get downpours. others won't see a drop. thank you, bob. let's go check on the roads with kristy breslin. she's at wjz traffic control. hello, kristy. delays pretty much everywhere. traveling on that west side inner loop, expect at least 25 minutes to security boulevard. on the north side of the inner loop, delays stretch there from york road around the perring parkway. and northbound 95, that's one long delay. begins at 395 and goes well past whitemarsh boulevard. westbound heavy from the patapsco river bridge to the beltway. also eastbound very heavy there, as you make your way towards the beltway. as far as city accidents go, plenty of them. west franklin at pulaski.

two construction workers are recovering after strong winds nearly blow them off a scaffolding in downtown cleveland. the men were seven stories up when the scaffolding started to sway. they were able to break a couple of windows and get to safety before it came crashing down. both men were taken to a nearby hospital. the extent of their injuries is still not known. well, a major drug bust in california where the coast guard seizes more than four tons of marijuana. it was all packed away on a tiny boat about 150 miles west of los angeles. it took dozens of officers to unload the stash worth about $8

million. six suspects are now in custody. but it is still not clear where they're from or where they were going with the drugs. a long island teen is accused of aiming a laser into the cockpit of a helicopter. and now, the fbi wants to know if he's pulled the dangerous stunt before. jennifer mclogan reports for wjz. >> reporter: two suffolk aviation officers were in the skies, searching for a burglary suspect below, when their cockpit was blasted with a green laser beam with a distance about a half mile away. >> how scary is this? >> considering it was diffused into the cockpit. initially, it's startling. milliseconds go by until you realize, okay, we have just been laserred. >> reporter: they made an immediate evasive maneuver, but were hit multiple times. they were able to pinpoint the location of the laser to this street in brentwood. officers on the ground quickly

located the 14-year-old suspect. they are not identifying him and released him to the custody of their mother. >> people could have been killed. >> nozthere's no reason we can't take time to figure out if the government wants to press charges. >> reporter: now they want to determine if he has pointed lasers at other craft, including jet blue flight 657. >> we just got laserred up here. two green flashes up into the cockpit. >> reporter: the jet blue pilot was stricken with a burned cornea. he transferred control to the copilot, who landed safely at the airport. >> it is blinding temporarily, but the main concern for me was what was at the other end of the laser port? >> reporter: doweling has been laserred. he calls this a crime. not an innocuous prank.

>> last year, more than 3,000 aircraft were laserred. a driver of a bmw shooting at a pickup truck. for some reason, the driver pulls over and waits for the vehicle following him to pass. then he fires off several rounds and speeds away. police say no one was hurt. but one of the bullets did hit the truck. well, officers are now conducting a search for a man who was wanted for aggravated assault in that case. a recent study says as many as one in three adults have sleepwalked at some point in their lives. research shows people usually grow out of it. if it lasts into adulthood, there is usually something that triggers it. sleep deprivation, illness, or medications can cause sleep walking. typically, it is most common in children, ages 4 to 8. leopard cubs are the latest attraction at the zoo. the cubs made their first
