the man accused in the nations worst mass shooting is back in court. unprecedented criminal charges he is facing. hi everybody i am mary bubala. kai is off. people are talking about 24 counts of murder. shooting victimfamily members listened as the man acushioned in the -- accused in the country's worst mass shooting is officially charged. this time cameras were banned from the courtroom. >> reporter: james holmes stared straight ahead as prosecutors charged him with 24 counts of murder. the courtroom was packed with family members members still recovering from wounds. holmes opened fire inside a colorado movie theatre, murdering 12 people and wounding 58 others. people at the hearing say the

24-year-old appeared subdued at times dazed and still has the orange dyed hair seen during his first court appearance last week. holmes spoke just once saying yes when the judge asked him if he understood the charges he was charged with two counts for each victim and charged with possession of explosives after police spent a number of days, dismantling devices at his booby trapped apartment. the defense wants anything the client gave to his doctor kept out of evidence. they believe home's attorney will pursue an insanity defense. mary ellen's niece was paralyzed in the attack and lost her baby over the weekend. >> it was important to come to see him. >> reporter: holmes is scheduled to be back in court over the weekend. the judge in the case has

placed a gag order on the lawyers handling the case. chaos in south baltimore crews hit a gas main, closing roads forcing businesses and homes to evacuate. wjz is live. alex is in locust point with the latest hi alex. >> hello mary when that gas line was broken there was no second guessing about what to do people were ordered out as quickly as possible. >> reporter: you could hear it blocks away. a high pressure line, carrying natural gas. ruptured by a construction crew digging in the 1100 block of homes street, 10:30 a.m. on the ground city fire and police, parented locust point staging equipment and first -- poured into locust point staging equipment and first responders. >> we heard it was a gas main break. >> reporter: hundreds of under armour workers were evacuated, along with three city blocks of homes and businesses nearly all had to walk out of the area as

gas continued to escape for the next two hours. >> at least it is not 102 degrees today. >> people were kept out of their homes while firefighter went door to door checking potential gas pockets in buildings. >> we have a hazmat task force on the scene they are going in to assess, whether or not there are or dours of gas. bge's emergency staff were able to get into the break. why it was struck is part of an investigation. >> three hours after the break happened people were allowed back to their homes and businesses according to baltimore city fire there were no injuries no property was damaged. >> thank you. hear from business owners and residents all new at 5 and 6:00 p.m. maryland man police say was planning a deadly work place

attack could be held for a week before he is charged. adam may is live with more on neil prescott. >> the 28-year-old is being held involuntarily under going a psychiatric evaluation he was taken into custody friday after miscot threatened to shoot up the business. police found more than two dozen weapons inside his apartment along with thousands of rounds of ammunition they believe he was upset because he was recently let go from his job. >> thank you under law prescott can be held up to a week before charges are filed. the search continues for the man who abducted vi ripken at gun point this man, kidnapped her from inside her garage last week. ripken was tied up, put into the backseat of her own car and driven around baltimore and hartford county she was not physically hurt but anybody with information, are asked to

call police. work begins on the transformation of city roads for the 2012 grand prix of baltimore. a forklift placed the trucks ceremonial first jersey barrier downtown the 12 turn, 2-mile circuit will be complete in 32 days, with crews working from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m., the race is scheduled to run on labor day weekend. >> our day started off beautifully but the humidity is back a brief shower moved through around lunchtime, but the sun is out now, wjz has weather and traffic together, bernadette woods is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> hello. well, we had clouds earlier today a couple showers and is thunderstorms we will show you first warning doppler radar a few out there but scattered, about because there is not a whole lot of movement to them if you get underneath one of these you are going to get a dour pour with a lot of rain -- downpour with a lot of rain.

east china, surveillance video captured the truck giving way to its 37 tonne load of cotton yard. the woman is seen pulling her husband and child out to have truck before it falls completely on one side. the load wasn't tightened down with ropes. a six flags roller coaster opened less than a month had a dozen riders stranded this weekend the superman ultimate flight coaster was stopped at the top for nearly two hours. the ride can hold up to 12 people travels up to 62 miles per hour, a crane gave the stranded riders water bottles until it turned back on they were then lowered to safety the ride is closed indefinitely. a family is in mourning after the loss of a wife and soon to be mother the tragic accident left a woman dead while on a family vacation in the outer banks. ann mcthat mara reports with more on this heart breaking story. >> reporter: she was a very spunky person determined to do things her way, but a real

heart of gold. >> reporter: this picture of jill bailey was take than week while she and her husband mathew enjoyed their vacation on the outer banks a vacation that ended abruptly wednesday night when the two were swimming in buckston. the couple lost their footing on the edge of a sand bar. >> all of a sudden, it dropped. >> reporter: mathew tried to save jill he struggled to keep her afloat for 20 minutes. >> he just kept holding on to her but realized she had turned blue. >> reporter: park rangers found the couple 20-yards from the shore jill wasn't breathing had no pulse but they flew her to the hospital where mathew had a chance to ask father park for a favour. >> he insisted i bless the deceased infant. >> reporter: the couple had already chose on the name for their little girl, baby olive was their first child due in november. for mathew the loss is twofold

taking a live lookout side, there is a cloud that we see, what you can't see is humidity, and it is a little thick out there. our temps are nice,. >> it is not that bad part of that is because with a we have this morning, clouds around, 86 by now. so far for our high. more into temperatures in a moment but first warning doppler radar even though it looked beautiful in that shot, some places are getting thunderstorms, let's go to radar. what we have going on a couple thunderstorms you can see they are scattered about not moving all that quickly, so where there is a thunder storm we are getting locally heavy rain here is one just to the north of westminster, meandering around the pennsylvania boarder, more forming around hagerstown. cambridge, a lot of rain over the weekend, with multiple

thunderstorm warnings there is a pretty decent thunderstorm off to your south producing a lot of rain out there. we had clearing skies last night but then fog fulled in those clearing skies and this morning, between two storms moving our way we are starting to get a little unsettled and that is why we are seeing the scattered showers and storms. winds out of the east not much of a wind but with the combination of all of that, kept down temperatures. dew points upper 60s they are not the low 70s we were on saturday but still feels like summer outside. so far today we have topped out 86 degrees. average 87 slightly below still could get a couple degrees before the next few hours before the sun goes down. not quite records this is where a will the of the heat has begun. thunderstorms went through, has not really cooled down all summer long, honestly, and we are sort of in between that, where there is a storm track,

cooler air off to the north, hot air off to the south and that is where front after front after front continues to go. in addition to the front continuing to come in, there is a storm off the coast that is moving north, combination of the two effecting us, scattered showers and thunderstorms then again a couple showerstorms out there, this gets a little closer again, tomorrow, and not until wednesday, that this sun out to the west slides through here and when it does slide through what is going to happen it will push out, most of the showers and storms, we are going to be stuck in a summer time pattern although it limits our chances for showers and storms there is still a small chance on the water, 82 degrees, southeast winds a to 10 knots, tonight, showers storms possible, becoming mostly cloudy, showers thunderstorms around, 87 for the high, close to those averages that is what we will see next couple days.

more with reaction from people effected mike. >> reporter: vic evacuations were orderly which is remarkable when you include how many people had to be evacuated including 1,000 people who work at under armor. sky 13 was overall this. it shows the magnitude the scope that went down here after 10:30 a.m. this morning the fire department was not taking any chances it is all clear now during the whole thing we did speak to several people whose morning and then afternoon was disrupted by all this. >> communication with our company was great so kept us really safe we are just kind of meandering back to get our cars and get home. >> no body really knew what was going on and communications all over the place. >> we could hear the whistle around the corner, wishing you could hear it and start to smell it the fire department were here probably in 7, 8 minutes and then they just went door to door and came in and asked me to close the bar and get anything together in case i

>> the drought sucked the life out of most crops, but the bingham family farm is a bright shot. >> how good is your crop this year? >> fantastic. we have the quality and quantity. >> reporter: bingham is growing grapes they can cool rate drought in fact -- tolerate drought in fact heat makes them sweeter they are so profitable he uses most of his water for the vineyard leaving the cotton crop to survive on rain. >> so you can make 10 times more off of these grapes than your cotton with the same amount of water. >> correct. >> reporter: in fact farmers doubt they will make any profit on cotton this year. >> it is in a word finished. >> reporter: at this farm the plants are small and flowers on top a bad sign. >> they wave the white flag of surrender they are done and it is finished. >> reporter: analysts say texas farmers will likely abandon a third of the cotton crop

a flash mob robbery but a store owner prevents it from being worse. the owner knew something was up when the group walked in one by one that is when he locked the door and ordered employees to call 911 still surveillance show it is teens in the store grabbing expensive jeans they got away with about $3,000 in merchandise. a deadly accident in new york a tractor trailer slammed into an office building early sunday morning leaving little behind. two blasts, huge explosion and fire and another blast and the truck's fuel tank ruptured the driver was killed. catholic priest in philadelphia accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year- old boy more than a decade ago. adam. father mccormick turned himself into police friday night. the alleged victim is now 25 years old he said he didn't
