coverage of the leak and it's continuing impact. we begin with alex demetrick who shows us what went wrong, alex. >> reporter: when that gas line broke there was no second guessing what to do. people were ordered out as quickly as possible. you could hear it blocks away. a high pressure line carrying natural gas rupture bid a construction crew digging about 10:30 this morning. on the ground, firefighters and police rushed to the area. >> you could smell it from blocks away. 100yards. >> reporter: hundreds were evacuated. nearly all had to walk out of the area as gas continued to escape for more than an hour. >> it's a little too much but

at least it's not 100 degrees today. >> we have our hazmat task force here in the scene. they are going to resident's home to determine if there are any odors of gas. none have been determined at the moment. >> reporter: part of that line is visible here why it was struck is now part of the investigation. three hours after the break happened people were allowed back in. bge repair crews have cleared the scene here. >> complete coverage continues, mike hellgren explains how the

rupture happened. >> reporter: sky high chopper 13 was over it all as it all unpolled. >> reporter: hundreds of people were forced out of their homes and business as concern grew over the gas leak. that included the evacuation of the large under armour headquarters. masses of people poured out of the street and the surreal side of children and cribs from a day care on the sidewalk. >> it smelled like gas. smelled like a gas leak and you could taste it in the air. it was pretty bad. >> i heard about the gas leak and i rushed home because i was freaking out. >> reporter: not only was the noise intense but also the soupd -- the sound of the leak. >> it sounded like water actually. it went on for six or seven minutes then it dissipated. >> reporter: in addition to closing streets, people were

told not to turn on any appliances or their cars. >> there's firemen walking door to door telling us that there had been a gas leak and we needed to evacuate. >> reporter: many waiting for answers as bge stopped the leak. >> my husband works at dominoes and he smelled the gas leak while i was on the phone with him. >> nobody really knew what was going on. and communications are all over the place. >> reporter: a tense morning that left many shaken by thankful that no one was hurt. >> reporter: a massive quick response, the gas service is back on now. the road repairs continue. live at under armour at locust point, mike hellgren. >> mike, thank you. once again the entire ordeal lasted about three hours and the line was repaired around 1:30 this afternoon. we continue to follow the breaking news we first brought you last hour from northeast

baltimore. captain jeff long is in sky chopper 13 above it with more for us, captain jeff. >> hartford road remains closed in both directions here at clear view avenue just outside of city limits. we have two work trucks here and then just to the north of them on hartford road a seriously damaged silver sedan. a driver of this sedan was put into an ambulance. we believe they are in ran ambulance that's still on the scene. a lot of bystanders here, there's a fifth vehicle. we're not sure this taxi is parked in a strange angle it's been here the whole time. we'll keep watching this. i'm captain jeff long, back to you. >> it is a bad accident, captain jeff. thank you. the man accused of killing 12 people in a colorado movie

theater is back in court. family members and victims looked on. edward lawrence has the latest for wjz from the courthouse. >> reporter: james holmes stared straight ahead as prosecutors charged him. >> 24 counts of murder in the first degree, 116 counts of criminal attempt to commit murder. >> reporter: the courtroom was filled with family members and victims still recovering from their wounds. holmes opened fire inside a colorado movie theater murdering 12 people. >> we're not going to back down for this individual. we're not going to let his fears stop our lives. >> reporter: the 24-year-old appeared subdued and at times dazed and still has that orange hair from last week. holmes spoke one time saying yes when asked if he understood the charges. holmes was charged with murder

with motivation. holmes was reportedly seeing a psychiatrist and the defense wants anything taken returned. >> it was very important today to come and see him. there was a lot of anger. >> reporter: holmes is scheduled to be back in court in august. he could face the death penalty if convicted. edward lawrence, wjz. >> the judge has placed a gag order on the attorney who are handling the case. a woman is recovering after being attacked by an intruder waiting in her home. adam is live in the newsroom with the latest on the search for the attacker. >> reporter: police say the 75- year-old woman took her dog for a walk this morning then

returned to her home. when she opened the door there was a man inside with a knife. after the victim refused to turn over cash, the two started fighting. she was taken to the hospital and is recovering from some injuries tonight. her attacker fled the scene and remains on the lose. >> very frightening adam. anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police. a 12-year-old drowns, investigators are trying to figure out how it happened. family member found adkins in a neighbor's pool. customers frustrated by bge's response to power outages are questioning the timing of the company's request for an

increase. >> reporter: mary already battled -- and is trying to toughen the hot temperatures. >> very, very bad. >> reporter: it's against the backdrop of discontent that bg & e asked for a rate increase. >> we're going to let the p -- uc decide if it was incorrect but the infrastructure is the infrastructure. people are under the misconception that we have a lot of money. >> find the funds from within the company. >> reporter: and do a better job of earning those funds. >> we're forced to pay for it

but we didn't get anything for our money. >> reporter: nancy jacobs says csb should make bge's performance a consideration. >> they're supposed to be the watchdogs not the lap dogs and they're not watching out for the people of maryland. >> reporter: but there's customers who understand the need for bge to upgrade. >> if they upgrade and we get our service as expected, i'm happy. >> reporter: this is only the second time in 20 years it's asked for an increase for infrastructure. >> a lot of it is money we've already spent. yet we're not going to the commission to ask for that money. >> now back to you. >> the proposal amounts to $12

a month. the day has cleared up. meteorologist bernadette woods joins us out back but we begin with bob in the weather center, bob. >> reporter: we had a couple of showers in a couple of spots had heavier downpours but that's pretty much gone now. take a look at radar. not much around at all. pretty hard to find. just a few light sprinkles. we had a few showers. near cambridge that is gone as well. right now pretty quite not on top. may change tomorrow and wednesday. as we do expect some scattered shower activity. the dewpoint came down a little bit to 66. it's not that uncomfortable. temperature at ocean city only 79. how does your tuesday and wednesday shape up? bernadette woods in the outback, bernadette. >> as we head into tomorrow we have a storm coming from the south. between the two what we're going to see is scattered showers and thunderstorms still a couple of possible as we head

through the night. you can see not very widespread right now. tomorrow on first warning doppler radar we're going to see scattered storms. after that it's going to limit our thunderstorms chance some what. but we're going to be stuck in a very summertime forecast here where we do still have the chance heading into the weekend and we'll have more of that coming up. bwi continues to mash records. bwi could get busier as more carriers are added. the rush to get ready for the baltimore grand prix his high gear today. road work started tonight and crews are getting the track ready in time. last time as they prepared we

had gridlock. >> that's right, mary. they're working on the streets tonight. that construction as you mentioned is under way and the grand prix general manager says that they've already done everything necessary to make sure that businesses and traffic are not impacted negatively. after making a few changes in planners the grand prix of baltimore is back for its second year under new organizers. >> from a spectator's perspective it was a great success. as a business it absolutely failed. >> reporter: grand prix general manager tim mayer says last year's race caused a number of problems for businesses and traffic. so this year they're doing things a bit differently. construction will start in the evening. instead of ending the race at 9:00 p.m. the race will end at 6:30 p.m. >> that's right around dinner so we're hoping that will have a positive impact on our business. >> everything is on schedule.

we're quite happy with the way things are going. >> reporter: the grand prix will feature a number of problems with joseph newgarden which says the race in baltimore is very difficult. >> that's pretty fast. >> reporter: the 2-mile race will take drivers through 12 tight turns past the inner harbor and through the narrow treatsover little italy. >> that's pretty difficult trying to watch us do that from such a close distance. you didn't get any closer at any other event. >> reporter: the race will go on from august 21st to september 2nd 2. >> one of these days we're going to have to go on that

it's partly sunny and 83 degrees. right now an anne anne arundel county man accused of threatening his employer is being defended busy his friends. >> tonight police stand by their allegations. >> reporter: it could be days before neil prescott is charged. for now he's undergoing a mental evaluation threatening to kill his coworkers last week at this shipping and software company. >> in fact, he said i'm the joker and i'm going to load my

guns and blow everyone up. >> reporter: that possible reference to the colorado movie massacre alarmed authority but not some of prescott's friends now speaking only to wjz. >> i know concerns of some people using to describe neil such as terrorists. if anything neil was also known as a gentle giant or i would refer to him as an iron teddy bear. >> reporter: wjz has learned prescott -- friends say prescott was an avid gun collector. police found two dozens weapons when he was arrested and he was wearing a shirt like this that says guns don't kill people, i do. >> i think it bordered serious damage that could have

well for a change we're not dealing with triple digit temperatures or heat index. in fact, most of the week is going to be pretty much like today. mid-upper 80s, some spots may get to 90 or better by the end of the week but nothing really outstanding or records going to be set this week. yes some areas are going to see some scattered showers in the afternoon. take a look at temps right now. not too bad out there. 85. the dewpoints have come down to a more comfortable 66. 77 the temperature in oakland. 81 up in elkton, temperatures

in the low to mid-80s not a bad night at all. tonight we're back in the upper 60s. downtown in the urban areas, yes it stays a lot warmer. 85 annapolis and kent. right now westminster. east and southeast winds today a little bit of a moisture flow from the atlantic ocean but it also keeps temperatures at bay or at oceans for that matter. 87 in detroit. the really hot stuff has pushed to the south. oklahoma, memphis, dallas 102. this hot temperature is going to stay down there. some of that heat will transfer to our region. at the end of the week getting slightly above 90 but nothing that hot here in the midwest. minneapolis at 88 and bizmark at 89. to the west of us a batch of showers. an area of low pressure will drag a front toward our region

on wednesday. tomorrow night maybe a widely scattered shower. a better chance on wednesday with that front getting close and action to the south that's slowly doing to be pushed away from -- that's going to be pushed away from the region. a couple of areas had some showers but that's pretty much gone right now. looks like a rather quiet night. during the day tomorrow, a slight chance of a shower late in the day, a better chance on wednesday, behind it looks like higher pressure moves in, may dry out a little bit for thursday and friday, looks like temperatures may go up a little bit as well. southeast winds at the bay. five to 10 knots the bay temp around 82 degrees right in the middle of day. not too bad. a widely scattered shower in a few spots other wise partly cloudy. still rather humid tomorrow but not oppressive at all. maybe a shower or thundershower. that's tomorrow's normal and tomorrow's high. >> thanks, bob. >> still to come tonight on wjz

as a shock after they went missing. horn's loved ones say his add adventurous spirit touched everyone he knew. >> ben connected with many many people. >> the example he sets for everybody is just you know there's no excuse not to be extraordinary. >> reporter: right now it's not entirely clear what happened we do know that during their deseptember down a remote trail something went terribly wrong. >> horn earned his masters and was working on a phd in san diego. baltimore police are asking for your help finding a van connected to a recent murder. on thursday a 34-year-old man was shot to death on esham avenue. detectives believe the suspects fled the scene with a mini van

like this one. anyone who see it is mini van should call 911 immediately. $60,000 worth of guns and marijuana plants are found inside a home. this drug operation put children in jeopardy because it was right across the street from a high school. andrea fuji has more on the bust. >> reporter: neighbors led police to this home where inside they found 24 guns including an ak47 and outside 46 marijuana plants. on saturday they arrested the homeowner 53-year-old nicholas dominique. >> it is a lot of questions to have in one individuals possession. >> reporter: but nicholas tells wjz the marijuana was for medical use. >> i cannot take medication or pain pills.

>> all the plants were between four and 5 feet tall. a large amount of marijuana. too much for a single consumption by one individual. >> reporter: and his house is just across the street from arundel high school. being near a school make it is charges more severe but there's no evidence he sold drugs to kids. neighbors say they are surprised by the discovery but still consider the area safe. >> no one has ever come down this street hardly. quietest street in town. that's why we like it here. >> none of it ever left the property that's the issue, none of it ever left the property. >> reporter: if convicted he faces 35 years behind bars. >> the suspect's 24 guns only 10 were registered. time now to look at some of the stories you will find in tomorrow's edition of the baltimore sun. the gambling commission is

will miss his fourth straight game. he's coming back to baltimore for further exam on another strain. bryan roberts was supposed to run to the line up that's not going to happen his season is over. roberts was already on the disabled list hoping to come back from a torn hip tendon. after his continued discomfort ends roberts chances to play again this year. he came back from concussion symptoms, now a hip injury, rough season for roberts. >> my hats off for ryan for trying to come back and helping us club. because talking to him how much it meant for him to come out and help. he came to the conclusion that he's going to try to get 60 at- bats next year and help us. >> omar quintanilla will fill in for roberts. the former new york met filling
