maryland's news station. getting bigger. a sinkhole downtown widens. >> how it is effecting businesses and residences. >> i am jessica kartalija. >> i am don scott. >> here is what people are talking . >> it could take nine days to stabilize that sinkhole that is effecting businesses and homes on east monument street. we break down the growing problem and what is done to fix it? good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon, jessica. adafternoon, everybody. it looks significantly different. there is more heavy equipment here. some of the damage is so bad people could temporarily lose water. a big sinkhole is getting bigger. it opened last week shutting down monument street near john hopkins hospital. the cause is a cult vet that

collapsed. public works officials are concerned that sanitation collection lines may have been compromised. water was suspended to some buildings in the block of east monument street. >> this is the aging infrastructure in many large cities. baltimore is not an exception. >> reporter: they will install vibration monitors on the buildings. this sinkhole has disrupted lives in the area. >> we have to detour to get home. >> i am about to close. >> reporter: once they stabilize the sinkhole, they will be able to walk by. this road is closeed to cars until the construction is complete. >> reporter: so, again, nine days possibly to stabilize this. bad weather could extends that. expect a detour for some time.

mike hellgren, wjz. they are working with utilities like bge and verizon to fix the sinkhole. police confirm the driver of a crash is michelle laurens of columbia. she died after her truck crashed into a tree of high tour hill after 9:30. no one else was in the truck with her. she was not wearing a set behl. excessive speed is believed to be a factor. they found a body badly decomposed in an apartment. according to the baltimore sun, she was found in the apartment on west 29th street. the discover was made after they entered to arrest the leaseholder marvin white on drug charges. the woman was in his apartment to do cocaine. they are awaiting toxicology reports. a man stabbed his mother.
