incredible career. for phelps, the london service is a crowning achievement for a decade of achievement. as he increased his medal count over three olympiads. >> reporter: with humble beginnings, michael phelps has overtaken the world's best with his swimming success. starting with eight medals at the games in greece in 2004. an unprecedented gold in eight events in china four years ago. phelps alone stand atop the olympic medal mountain, decorated more than 18 times, more than any in history. a global great and an american sports standout. rising above the legendary mark spitz who won 11 gold meld -- medals in 1982. and on his way to double the field and track star, carl lewis. phelps said these london games are his last, and for all time, he's made a lasting impression.

>> reporter: michael phelps is 27 years old. and that is an advanced age for a swimmer at that level. and as we've seen this week in london, he's not as dominant as he was in his prime, but it's clear that his achievements will stand the test of all time for what he's already done. back to you. >> mark, thank you. >> phelps has three more events to swim in london, giving him three more opportunities to add to his record medal total. >> well, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of maryland right now. it is a warm tuesday evening as we take a live look outside. looks nice right there, though. let's check in with meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk, tracking live doppler radar. >> we have two warnings now. one storm moving out of montgomery county, into frederick county. that's until 5:45. the other storm, as we have been tracking it just to the west of columbia. right now, ivory west country, from mayfield. that's moving just west of

columbia. there you see it at about 15 miles per hour. east of 97. just really just over 332 there. southwest of ellicott city. so that's one storm we're watching. the other, as i mentioned, just west of the area. this one up toward the frederick area. more storms out byiler -- bum -- by cumberland. some folks will see heavy downpours in the next hour or two. you can see easily, a half inch of rain. temperature-wise, hasn't been all that hot today. only 86 now. that's pretty close to our normal high really. 79, ocean city in the 60s. western maryland, the rain is coming down right now. they have been really rain cooled. it's been a hot july. >> even with the record cool day that we had in the middle of the month. and the cooler understand to the month, take a look at some of these numbers as we look back at july. we've had 21 days with 90 degrees or higher.

including four of them with 100 degrees or higher. and that sets our average high for the entire month at 91.6 degrees. so supposed to be hot in july. it was hotter than average, even though we're cooling it down for the end of the week. we have a lot more in the weather department with thunderstorms. and we will keep you updated with the first warning weather forecast. new information tonight on the man suspected of kidnapping the mother of cal ripken, jr. aberdeen police are hoping new surveillance, video and composilate sketch will help them track down the suspect. >> this surveillance video shows the man police say is responsible for the abduction of vi ripken. >> we're asking people in anne arundel county, outside the average area, to take a look at this video this composite. and see if they'd like to see this region. >> walking into a retail store

in anne arundel county, on the day police say he kidnapped ripken, he makes a purchase and walks out. police have also released a composite sketch of the suspect. it was one week ago today, that vi ripken, the mother of cal ripken, jr., was in the garage and tan by a gun. police say she was taken between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. tuesday. her car was spotted in essex, about 8:15 that night. a missing purposes alert went out about 5:30 the next morning. and she was found by a neighbor. >> reporter: 76-year-old vi ripken was tied up and thrown in the back of her car. the suspect took her on a terrifying ride around central maryland for 24 hours. >> reporter: the mayor of aberdeen calling the situation unusual and troubling. >> i can't recall anything like this. >> reporter: the suspect is still on the loose. the city has received help from outside agencies and are hoping as more tips pour in, they will uncover. >> our police and fbi are again running down a myriad of

information and tips and so i think it's just going to be a matter of time. >> reporter: and the ripken family has yet to comment publicly about the investigation. however, they did release a statement saying they were grateful for vi's safe return. i'm rochelle ritchie, in aberdeen, wjz eyewitness news. >> rochelle, thank you. a $2,000 reward has been offered for tips leading to an arrest. a maryland family is dead in what police are calling a murder-suicide. >> the calvert county sheriff's office found the bodies of a man, woman, and 2-year-old while. detectives believe the man shot his wife and child before killing himself at their home in owings. another 12-year-old child, believed to be a member of the family, is currently being treated for burns and cuts. it's not clear what sparked the attacks. police are currently looking for a motive. >> so sad, vic. thank you. we are all looking to

confirm the family's identity. a dangerous problem but getting worse. the sinkhole is expanding in the section of east baltimore. weench is live on monument street. following the repair efforts. >> hi, kai. it's just a mess here. and it's going to require some complex and innovative and engineering solutions to get things back to normal. because this hole just keeps growing. >> from sky eye chopper 13, you can see how much the monument street sinkhole is expanding. on the left, is what it looks like now. on the right is just after it opened last week. it's still not stable. so dangerous, crews can't measure the exact size. >> quite a challenge for us to be over the design. basically from the roadways and collapse. >> reporter: the sink hole is just blocks from johns hopkins hospital. this busy part of monument street, between east bradford and east monson streets will be closed for several weeks. dpw brought in ground-

penetrating radar, to cover other areas but found no problem. but still alarming that a 50- foot hole could open up in the middle of a street. >> i don't think our street should be caving in like that. it's crazy. >> i've never seen anything like it. >> reporter: it's expected to take nine days alone, to stabilize. hitting businesses hard. >> taking away their foot traffic. some shops are on temporary water lines. >> that would be frustrating. we need business right now. >> reporter: the sinkhole formed from a drainage culvert. and is another sign of baltimore's aging infrastructure, which has been cause for concern lately, after several large water main breaks, including one that has shut down light street in the heart of downtown for weeks. >> reporter: and the time line for fixing this problem is still fluid again. nine days to get the hole stabilized. and then they've got to do all the filling in and all the pavement work. so we are talking weeks here probably before all of this

gets back to normal. and this is back open to vehicular traffic. reporting live in east baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. coming up all new at 6:00, we'll have an update on the ongoing light street repair work. for that broken water main and when that will be finished. >> one month after the unprecedented durecho storm that left hundreds without power, bge releases its formal report to state regulators on how it handled the situation. wjz is live. derek valcourt tells us what is in the report. derek? >> reporter: well, essentially, this report says that given the extreme circumstances around that storm that struck maryland, bge did the best that it could but that is little consolation to customers who in some cases, spend a week or more without power. >> reporter: the devastating storms struck maryland with a vengeance. and when it was all over, parts of maryland looked like a war

zone, leaving 716,000 bge customers without power. many waiting days in the sweltering heat as the overwhelmed utility company went to work. >> they should have been here now. >> reporter: so all of bge crews went to work right away. this just-released report from the company to maryland's public service commission indicates bge struggled to bring in help from out-of-state utility workers. in part, because the storm struck with little warning, unlike hurricanes, which are forecast days in advance. >> had we had the advance notice, the ability to bed down say, 1,000 out-of-state utility workers. >> reporter: it took days for the necessary out-of-state crews crews to arrive the but bge's president told wjz, efforts picked up dramatically, once they had the support they needed. >> reporter: given the magnitude of the problem, this performance compares, actually better than what we did even in hurricane irene. >> reporter: bge says customers

partly sunny. 86 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. animal advocates in maryland may get another chance to fight a ruling that labels pit bulls inherently dangerous. monique griego has more on what the breed supporters are hoping for in next month's special session. >> reporter: ever since the maryland court of appeals declared pit bulls and pit mixes inherently dangerous back in may, animal advocates have been fighting to stop the ruling. >> i was appalled, to be

honest. >> reporter: they foster pit bulls for a local shelter. she says while the law is currently on hold its effects are already being felt. >> already, than there's been instances of people being evacated and having to give -- evicted and having to give them up. >> reporter: this 10-year-old boy was viciously attacked outside his towson home. and in 2011, a five-year-old boy was mauled, and a 78-year- old woman was nearly killed by a pit bull in greektown. >> there are unfortunate incidents that are going to occur with every species of animals. >> reporter: pit bull supporters are now putting pressure on lawmakers to take up this issue, at next month's special session. >> we're really trying any avenue that we can, to make sure that all dogs are treated equally. >> reporter: alene gabby says the state court of appeals also has a pending motion for reconsideration. until that is taken up issue the ruling cannot take effect. but the clock is ticking to change things.

to find out more, call today. all right. some thunderstorm activity is developing west of the region. also southeast of the area. let's take a look at the local radar, just southwest of columbia. we had that cell that is moving now just to the northwest of columbia. still that warming effect for the next four to five minutes. you can see that cell is beginning to head right toward southwestern portions of baltimore county. between sykesville. earlier, heading out to the northeast now. let's see exactly where it's moving. let's take a look at it. there it is. hail could be as big as one inch. heading up towards west friendship, woodstock area. that's in western baltimore county. and also, just east of sykesville. that storm is still totally good. we did have report of hail, 8/10ths of an inch in dayton. that's in howard county. that cell continues to move in

that direction. heavy downpours, moving to the north and northeast. rest of the region, still some activity, across portions of western maryland. heavy stuff there. hagerstown. and weakening activity, near easton. so right now, we're tracking the activity, just to the southwest of the baltimore area. to mount airy, urbana, and liberty town. we just canceled the warnings. areas in effect. take a look at temps. 86 here. 87, hagerstown. they will be dropping in the 70s, with shower activities. 68, 61 with rain out there. 85, d.c. 77, easton. they had rain. 85 up in elkton. locally. temperatures in the mid-80s as you can see. and they'll probably drop into the upper 60s, low 70s. southeast winds now. off the ocean continue to keep us from getting a super hot temperature. but there is a front to the west that will help enhance our scattered shower activity. and behind that front, we're going to see more of a

eyewitness news. we have an update on breaking news in north baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 remains over the scene of a deadly police- involved shooting. captain jeff long has new details for us. captain jeff? >> this is what we're being told by police. earlier this afternoon, the police department was called to the the lyndon town homes here in hampden. and they were called for domestic dispute. when they arrived on the scene, a man and a woman were involved in an altercation. the responding police officer ended up getting in an altercation with the male suspect. he called for backup. the responding police officer for that backup arrived and ended up shooting and killing the male suspect. and a imiefs was found at the scene. but they're not sure if the knife was involved in this situation. reporting live from chai eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long, back to you. another. we'll continue to follow that developing story.

a 74-year-old baltimore county woman fights off her attacker and lives to tell about it. andrea fujii has more. she's a pretty incredible woman. >> and i just spoke with police who say the suspect is still on the loose. and she's probably pretty badly bruised. that's because this 74-year-old put up quite a fight. >> reporter: lynn knows she is lucky to come away with only bruises and stitches, after fighting off a home intruder monday morning. >> adrenaline kicks in a little. you don't think. >> reporter: she was walking her dog, d-2, outside the cockeysville townhome when the suspect walked past her. >> i said good morning. and she said good morning. and -- and -- then all of a sudden, i got this sixth sense, i'd better get up to that house. >> reporter: she had left her door unlocked. >> , -- inside, she found the suspect who demanded money. but serotta refused.

>> she was going to fight with a five -- 75-year-old woman. i was going to give her all i got. i bit her, grabbed her, pinched her. >> reporter: they tussled upstairsstairs to downstairs. the suspect grabbed a knife but never used it. >> reporter: the whole time, d- 2 was whining outside. that got the attention of the next door neighbor, who rain rang her door bel three times. >> she said the girl ran out the back. so i ran to the back to see if i could see her. but she was not in my line of sight. >> reporter: the suspect got away with a cell phone and credit card. one day later, cerota is in pain but not angry. >> you know, she is probably desperate. there was probably some reason she had to do that. >> reporter: cerota says she thinks the suspect knew her routine of walking the dog at the same time every day and keeping her door unlocked. but she said she has learned her lesson and now locks up all the time. >> all right, andrea, thank you. i think she's an incredible

woman. wow. police say the suspect is described as a woman in her 20s with a heavy build. if you have any information, call police. a maryland man is in custody now, accused of stabbing his mother. vic is in the newsroom with more on this case of family violence. vic? >> reporter: well, kai, anne arundel county police searched for the suspect for several hours. today, they arrested him near the mall. 21-year-old james zito is accused of attacking his 54- year-old mother inside their home in millersville. she's being treated for multiple stab wounds. police say zito was armed with a knife. he was booked on first-degree assault charges. kai, back to you. >> police are still trying to determine what led to the attack. >> reporter: maryland's own dark knight is pulled from several events nationwide, following the movie theater tragedy in colorado. lenny robinson says he's had appearances canceled in st. louis and chicago. robinson has been dressing up as batman for years, visiting six children at hospitals in has own custom bat mobile. officials say they canceled

because they are worried batman's presence could trigger thoughts about the massacre. victims of that movie theater shooting are speaking out tonight, following yesterday's court hearing for the accused gunman. he is charged twice for each of the victims, 142 counts in all. john blackstone reports from centennial, colorado. >> reporter: with their wounds still bandaged, some of the victims of the movie theater shooting entered the colorado courtroom to see the accused gunman, formally charged. this time, cameras were barred from the courtroom. but holmes seemed little different from his first appearance a week ago. mary ellen shakes herred had -- her head. >> it made me very resentful and angry that he would do this to so many people. >> reporter: hansen's niece is ashley moser. she was shot in the neck and is paralyzed. she had a miscarriage. and her 6-year-old daughter veronica was , was the youngest person killed in the shooting. >> it's going to be a long

recovery. ashley is very aware of what is going on right now. i think at this time, she has to little bits and -- to receive little bits and pieces of things because it is such a shock. >> reporter: in keeping with this, prosecutors filed charges under two different state laws. the result is that for 12 deaths, holmes faces 24 charges of first-degree murder. and 116 attempted murder charges for the 58 who were wounded. when told he could face the death penalty, holmes had no reaction. >> he had a poker face on the whole time. >> what was that like, to see someone who has done so much harm to your family? >> it just seem sos cold- blooded. -- seems so cold-blooded. very indifferent. >> tonight, one more victim has been released from the hospital. and one has come off the critical list. the life of former neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman pleads not guilty to a perjury charge.

shelly zimmerman is accused of lying about her family's finances during a bail hearing for her husband. george zimmerman faces murder charges in the shooting death of florida teenager trayvon martin. shelly zimmerman did not appear in court. her lawyer entered the plea on her behalf. mitt romney is on his way back to the u.s., after a three- country trip overseas. in tonight's campaign 2012 report, the presumptive republican nominee ended the trip in poland. but critics are still focusing on what he said in israel. tara mergener reports from washington. >> reporter: mitt and ann romney laid flowers at a monument for the heroes at the war saw ghetto, one of the couple's final stops overseas. the republican white house hopeful received a warm welcome in poland, a country that has sometimes been at odds with the obama administration. >> a turbulent world, poland stands as an example and defender of freedom. >> reporter: but romney's trip has been filled with foreign

we're following breaking news from anne arundel county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. captain jeff long with details for us. captain jeff? >> what we do understand write now is that somebody was thrown from a boat and received some injuries. they called in a couple of medics. and we've seen some response. we've seen fire department. we've seen ems here. they did have one victim on the shoreline. and i think they're working on them right now. we watched them pull that person from the water, looked like a younger person, probably a teenager. as best we could tell. now, this is on marley creek. the house brook inn on marley road. so this backs up to the creek here. that's in anne arundel county. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. >> captain jeff, thank you. let's ches in on our weather now with bob turk. bob? >> we had the storms a little while ago.

these storms have really weakened quite a bit and shrunk, to tell you the truth. the one moving in to western columbia county. other over mount vernon area. heading over east. another north of hagerstown, moving away from the region. so some folks still going to see showers and thunderstorm activity tonight. a lot of stuff out in far western maryland. and a weaker batch here in the eastern shore. oakland and cumberland, getting pretty good rain. and across southern pa as well. bernadette has a look at the outback and a look at what we can expect tomorrow. >> we'll remain in this very unsettled air mass. tomorrow, the same concept. clouds, some sunshine. starting out around 70 degrees. showers and thunderstorms possible really at any point during the day tomorrow. high in the upper 80s. and still tomorrow evening, the chance for a shower or thunderstorm. for the rest of the five-day, here's bob. once again, some areas will get some downpours. other areas, 2 to 3 miles away

won't see a drop of rain, which is pretty typical. might dry out here for friday and saturday. and 93 coming up here on sunday. so it's going to get hot, first few days of august. mary? >> all right, bob. thank you. another natural disaster plagues the town of colorado springs. heavy rain triggered a mudslide in the same area affected by the waldo canyon fire, shutting down a major highway overnight. at least one driver got caught in the meddle. he had to -- mess. he had to climb through the roof just to escape. all lanes of traffic are back open tonight. more than three years after being charged in the murder of his wife, drew peterson finally goes to trial. opening statements from both sides wrapped up a short time ago. the chicago-area -- former chicago area police officer is accused of killing his third wife. kathleen sabio, in 2004. her death was originally ruled an accident. but peterson was later charged after his fourth wife, stacy peterson, disappeared in 2007. >> well, police are looking for a group of grave robbers in new jersey. someone snatched the body of 98-

year-old woman from her mausoleum at the atlantic city cemetery in pleasantville. workers discovered the empty tomb last week. they say the robber shattered the glass outdoor to the spinelli family mausoleum and pried open the coffin. police are now looking into possible cult and religious ritual activity. >> people vacationing off cape cod are being extra cautious in the water after a man is injured in a possible shark attack. the man suffered bites to his legs while swimming. authorities are trying to determine whether a shark was the culprit. after witnesses reported seeing one swim up to the victim. the man remains hospitalized in stable condition. fireofficials say his cuts are severe. but he will not lose a limb. ocean city police say a predator is targeting women in a resort town. at least three have been attacked in the last month. now, police are issuing an alert. >> reporter: as thousands enjoy summer vacation in ocean city.

police are warning beach goers to be on guard. when the sun goes down, someone is targeting women. >> reporter: three attempted assaults that have happened in the past month. >> reporter: in all three cases, the victims were approached just as they were leeches a bar alone. police say the women were intoxicated. the attacks were near bars from 15th to 62nd streets in ocean city. >> reporter: in poorly lit areas. >> reporter: police are now warning areas to stick with a group late at night. it's something these visitors always do. >> we definitely always travel with either the guys we're with or together. we're never alone. >> never. >> the suspect is described as a white man, 5'10" tall, weighing 170 pounds, in his mid- 20s to early 30s. ocean city police know the description is vague. but so far, that's all they have to go on. >> police say the man initiates conversation with the women, before attempting to assault them. police are checking surjailance cameras in the vicinity of the attacks. >> reporter: check in with eyewitness news at 6:00.

but the aches and pains are adding up for this football team. haloti ngata, all-defensive pro tagle still hasn't practiced because he has a strained hamstring. brian mckinney hasn't practiced. he has a bad back. and linebacker courtney upshaw. he's been out for a few days now with a bruised shoulder. and tight end dennis pitta suffered a broken bone in his hand during yesterday's practice. that's a launch from a receiving corps that hurt itself a lot last season. you would think that the receivers would be short- handed. but the ravens hurt themselves with numerous drop passes. coach harbaugh determined to change that. >> that's the number 1 job for receiver, to catch the ball. i mean, you can talk about speed and size and separation all you want. but the bottom line is, can you catch? if you can't catch, in my mind, you are not a receiver. it's definitely not.
