the scene. but it is unclear if the suspect pulled the knife on the officer. and we know backup arrived as the 17 continued to attack that officer. another police officer shot and killed that suspect. neighbors say they came out when they heard the shots. >> the kids actually said they were on the front porch. and my son got scared because he's scared of fireworks. and she said, it's probably just fireworks. so they probably heard it, but didn't know what it was. >> reporter: and again, that victim did die at the scene. we're told that the officer who was attacked is okay. just some bumps and bruises. homicide investigators are now out here on the scene. we'll continue following this developing story. for now, we're live in hampden. i'm meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> and of course, wjz will continue to follow the story. we'll bring you any new information as it becomes available. updating breaking news. rescuers were called to the scene here on marley avenue for a boating accident. police and fire confirmed that all people are accounted for and one person is being

transported to the hospital. no word on that person's condition. of course, we'll keep you updated on this story as well as we get more information. major new developments in the search for the man who abducted the first lady of maryland baseball. police released new surveillance video of the suspect who kidnapped vi ripken. rochelle ritchie has the newly- released evidence in the case. >> reporter: this surveillance video released to wjz today, shows the man police say is responsible for the abduction of vi ripken. >> reporter: we're asking people in anne arundel county, outside the average area to take a look at this video, this composite, and see if they'd like -- might be familiar with this individual. >> reporter: the video shows the individual walking into the store on the day police say he kidnapped ripken. he makes a purchase and walked out. police have also released a composite sketch of the suspect. >> reporter: it was one week ago today, that vi ripken, the

mother of cal ripken, june, was -- junior june, was taken by her garage. her car was spotted about 8:15 that night. missing persons alert went out about 5:30 the next morning. and she was found at 6:00 a.m. by a neighbor. >> reporter: 74-year-old vi ripken was tied up and thrown in the back of her car. the suspect took her on a terrifying ride around maryland for 24 hours. >> reporter: the mayor calling the abduction unusual and troubling. >> i just can't recall anything like this. >> reporter: the suspect is still on the loose. the city has received help from outside agencies and are hoping as more tips pour in, someone will come forward. >> our investigators, the state police, the fbi, again, are running down a myriad of information and tips and so i think it's just going to be a matter of time. >> reporter: and the ripken family has yet to comment publicly about the investigation. however, they did release a

[ cheering ] >> we love you, michael, we love you allison. >> reporter: all eyes glowed -- glued to a live feed, as phelps becomes the most decorated olympian ever, with 19 career

medals. >> it's just extreme excitement. it's just such a thrill. it's so hard to describe. it's like christmas, thanksgiving, and a birthday, all wrapped up into one. >> the mental game is the biggest part of it. i think he's showing people he has the will power to compete. >> reporter: allison schmidt taking the gold in the 200- meter freestyle. >> i get really excited and emotional. i tear up when i watch the races. >> reporter: cheering for friends in a pool across the pond, these aspiring olympians have high hopes for golds of their own. >> i know i'm one of those kids. i really want to be like allison one day and go to the olympics. >> reporter: and among all of the olympic athletes who have trained here at meadowbrook, there are 21 gold medals. pretty unbelievable. we should also mention, this is michael phelps' first gold in the olympic games in london this year. mary, back to you. >> lots of excitement. jessica, thank you. live complete coverage continues now with sports director mark viviano, with historic perspective on phelps

incredible career. mark? >> reporter: that's exactly right, mary. and the michael phelps story is bigger than what is happening this week. it's about a great career. and the london games are the crowning achievement on what has been a decade of greatness. a guy accumulating that many medals over three olympiads. >> reporter: with humble beginnings in baltimore, michael phelps has overtaken the world's best with his swimming success. starting with eight medals at the games in greece in 2004. an unprecedented eight gold in china four years ago. then three more so far in london. phelps now stands alone, atop the olympic medal mountain, decorated 19 times, more than any other olympian in history. a global great and an american sport standout, rising above the legendary mark spitz, who won 11 gold medals at the munich games in 1972.

and phelps is on his way to doubling the 10 medals won by carl louis, wowon 10 medals in his olympic career. phelps says these olympic games are his last and for all time, he's made a lasting impression. >> reporter: michael phelps now 27 years old. and it's hard to imagine that as an advanced age. but at that level of coveragetition, it is. and it's clear, as you've seen this week, he's not as dominant as he was in his prime. but there's no question that what he has accomplish will stand -- accomplished will stand the test of time. >> all right, mark. thank you. and he has more to do. phelps has three more events to swim in london, as he tries to add to his medals total. a frightening problem on a major baltimore street. a growing sinkhole. hits another problem for the city's old infrastructure. wjz is live right now. mike hellgren takes a closer look at the solutions to this growing problem. mike? >> reporter: vic, it's going to take sometime before this street gets back to normal.

normally, it would be filled with cars, but it's just a mess right now. and they brought in heavy equipment to try to fix the hole. >> reporter: from sky eye chopper 13, you can see how much the monument street sinkhole has expanded. on the left is what it looks like now. on the right is just after it opens last week. it's still not stable. so dangerous, crews can't imagine the exact size. >> it's quite a challenge for us to come up with a design. especially with the roadway. >> reporter: the sink hole is just blocks from johns hopkins hospital. this busy part of monument street between bradford and east monford streets will be closed for weeks. >> reporter: dpw brought in ground-penetrating radar to test other areas around the sinkhole and found no problem. but for many, it's still alarming that a hole, 50 feet deep, could open on a major street. >> i don't think our streets should be caving in like that. i just think it's crazy. >> i've never seen anything

like it. >> reporter: it's expected to take nine days alone to stabilize, hitting businesses this hard. >> yeah, i've heard it's ruined. . >> reporter: taking away their foot traffic. some shops are on temporary water lock. >> reporter: that would be frustrating. we need people to come. they're hurting us right now. >> reporter: the sink hole here formed when a drainage culvert collapsed. and infrastructure has been questioned lately especially one that shut down light street in harbor town for weeks. >> and the time line for getting this fixed here is fluid. we are talking weeks before cars will once again be able to travel monument street. live in baltimore. >> for the water main break. they said they are making progress but it could be

another 20 days before the progress is completed. >> reporter: a 2-year-old is among those killed in a horrific scene inside a southern maryland home today. adam may is live with the latest on this developing situation. called for this incident. when they arrived there, they found three bodies inside. killed his wife and child before taking his own life. meanwhile, the couple's 12-year- old is also in the house alive, suffering from burns and cuts to his neck. he was rushed to the hospital, last listed in critical condition, mary. >> so sad, adam. thank you. investigators are still working to determine a motive for the killing. a man accused of stabbing his mother is in custody tonight, after being on the run for more than 12 hours. police say 21-year-old james zito attacked his mother in their millersville home last night. he was arrested this morning, near glen burnie mall. after witnesses noticed his unusual behavior.

zito's mom is expected to survive her injuries. a batman impersonator, known for bringing smiles to the faces of 6-year-olds is finding it tough to find a gig. lenny robinson said he has had several appearances canceled in light of the shooting in colorado. he says the hospitals are worried he'll scare children, instead of brightening their day. a month after the historic derecho storm that devastated the power grid, bge releases its formal report on how they handled the situation. derek valcourt has more on that. >> reporter: bge says essentially in this 57-page report, that it's due to the bizarre and massive storm that ripped through just last month, they said they did the best they could. >> reporter: the devastating storm struck maryland with a vengeance. and when it was all over, parts of maryland looked like a war

zone, leaving 760,000 bge customers without power. many of them frustrated, waiting days in the sweltering heat, as the overwhelmed utility company went to work. >> they should have been here by now. >> two or three days. and i don't see trucks working. >> reporter: so all of bge crews went to work right away. this just-released report from the company to the maryland public service commission indicates bge struggled to bring in help from out-of-state workers. in part, because it struck with little warning, unlike hurricanes which are forecast days in advance. >> had we had the advanced notice, the ability to set down 1,000 out of state workers before it could hit, one could presume we would have restored power even quicker. >> reporter: it took days for the necessary out-of-state crews to,a rive. -- to arrive. but restoration efforts picked up dramatically, once they had the support needed. >> given the magnitude of the problem, this performance compares, actually, even better

than what we did in hurricane irene. >> reporter: bge customers said those expecting power to be restored quickly aren't being reliftic. -- realistic. >> it taught that you can always do better. >> reporter: maryland's public service commission will be holding hearings throughout the month of august, trying to solicit opinions from customers on how the company performed during the outage. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> to read bge's report to the public service commission and to find out about the public comment period, log onto wjz.com and click on the news tab. we have had a few storms move through the area after a quiet day. a live look outside right now. some clouds are hanging around baltimore. wjz is live with first warning weather. meteorologist bern dets woods and bob turk are updating first warning doppler radar for us. we'll start with bob. >> in some areas, we'll get heavy downpours. take a look at radar. that one storm we saw over owings mills when mark was up

there has now moved and weakened considerably. in fact, there's not a whole lot to the left of that. there's brief downpours left of owings mills. and a heavier batch here near liberty town. and a pretty good amount of rain. we did get one report out of fairfax, virginia, of one-inch hail. and far western maryland, still pretty decent rain going on in garrett county and preston county. they have a flood advisory until 9:30 tonight. they seen 1 to 2 inches of rain in the region. and still raining out in portions of western maryland. could see minor flooding. so be careful if you're out that way. still a chance of a shower in our region tonight. we'll talk about that a little later on. right now, we drop to 82. only in the 70s, where it has rained. 86 still in d.c. and in the 70s, easton had a good shower, with 73. we've had a very hot month of july. bernadette wraps it all up for us. bernadette? >> that's right. even with our cooler end to the month. and a record cool day buried in

andrea fujii spoke with her and has more on the investigation. >> reporter: lynn cerota knows she's lucky to come away with only bruises and stitches after fighting off an intruder in her home monday morning. >> it was stupid. but adrenaline quick kicks in. you don't think about it. >> reporter: she was walking her dog, d2 when the suspect walked past her. >> i said good morning. and she said good morning. and -- then all of a sudden, i got this sixth sense. i'd better get back up to that house. >> reporter: sirota had left her door unlocked. inside, she found the suspect, who demanded money. but the suspect refused. >> i said, don't fight with me. i'm a 75-year-old woman. i'm going to give you everything i got. i grabbed everything i could. >> reporter: she said the suspect pulled out a knife but never used it. >> reporter: the whole time, d2, the dog, was outside whining. that caught the attention of a next-door neighbor, who rang

the doorbell three times. >> she said the girl just went out the back. so i ran in the back there to see if i could see her. but she was not in my line of sight. >> reporter: the suspect got away with a cell phone and credit card. one day later, sirotta is in pain but not angry. >> you know what? she's probably a desperate lady. and there's probably some reason she had to do that. >> reporter: police think the suspect knew her routine of leaving the door unlocked during her morning walk. she said from now on, she will lock up. >> andrea, thank you. police say the suspect is described as a woman in her 20s with a heavy build and is also probably bruised. animal advocates in maryland may soon get another chance to fight a ruling labeling pit bulls inherently dangerous. what they are hoping for in next month's special session. >> reporter: ever since the maryland court of appeals declared pit bulls and pit

mixes inherently dangerous in may, animal advocates have been trying to stop the fighting. >> i was appalled, to be honest. >> reporter: she said while the law is currently on hold, its effects are already being felt. >> already, there's been instances of people being evicted and having to give up animals. >> reporter: but there are those that support the ruling, which came down after a string of attacks. in 2007, this 10-year-old boy was viciously attacked outside has towson home. and in 2011, a 5-year-old boy was mauled and a 78-year-old woman was nearly killed by a woman in greektown. >> there are unfortunate incidents that are going to occur with every species of animal. >> reporter: pit bull supporters are pressuring lawmakers to take up the issue in the upcoming special session. >> we're really trying any avenue we can to make sure all dogs are treated equally. >> reporter: alene gabby said the state court of appeals also has a pending motion for

reconsideration. so until that is taken up, the ruling cannot take effect. but the clock is ticking to change things. >> legislation like this isn't going to be effective. and to not have it happen in any form, in the future either. >> reporter: and while there is still no guarantee lawmakers will take up this issue next month, animal advocates say they are hope willful. >> the special session will begin august 9th. and bob is back. we've had some rain. >> some areas of downpours. most areas have not. pretty much the picture for the rest of the week. some areas have seen half an inch of rain with hail. nothing here. at least so far. take a look at temperatures so far. did drop to 82. humidity up a little bit. 6%. south/southeast winds at 6. barometer holding steady. come back and take a look at radar and show you where the storms are after this. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

[monotone] she says, "switch to progressive and you could save hundreds." call or click today. we saw a shower here and a shower there. but none over here where we are. >> some areas with decent rain. storms are weakening because they're losing the right heat from the sun. but take a look at activity now. west of west minister. 140. see it, boom, moving quickly up that way now. most of carroll county, getting rain activity at the moment. right now in the city, it's still pretty quiet. and we had that activity

earlier, around portions of howard county. it was pretty strong. right now, that weak shower to the northwest of us, right around butler, rorks orings -- owings mills. this point, activity south of us and d.c. and most of the heavy activity now in garrett county. bays still had heavy rain. they had a flood advisory until 9:30 tonight, for garrett and preston county, in neighboring west virginia. some areas once again, will see some heavy downpours. and we might see the same thing going on tomorrow. we're down to 82. d.c., still 86. only in the low 70s. of course, with rain. easton had a good rain shower earlier. they're at 73. 81 in elkton. dew points not that bad at 67. 82, bel air. here, columbia, westminster. owings mills, those areas, where the rain has been coming down in the low 70s now. had wind gusts around 25, 30 miles an hour with those showers. 86, 70 today. now, the average is 87, 67. and by the weekend, our average

does drop back down to 86. 102, the record high. 1954. and 54 in 1997. southeast winds, and that's really kept us from getting super hot temperatures. but over the next couple of days, more of a shift to the west ask south. and that will bring in higher temperatures. and probably around 90 to the low 90s by the end of the week. now, there's a lot of activity for us across the south tonight. moving away from us. the heat still over texas. to the west, kind of a diffuse frontal system with scattered storms. you see it from new york state. through western maryland, west virginia. this may make it over the mountains tonight. so if you can get a shower in the last few hours, late tonight, there may still be a risk of thunderstorm activity. and you see lightning overnight. but by thursday, that higher pressure begins to move in. things begin to dry out. but behind it, slight warming back into the low 90s, which will be above average. south winds, 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, once again around 82 degrees.

mitt and ann romney laid flowers at a monument to the war saw heroes, one of the couple's final stops overseas. the republican white house hopeful received a warm welcome in poland ai country that has sometimes been at odds with the obama administration. >> in a turbulent world, poland stands as an example and a defender of freedom. >> reporter: but romney's foreign trip has been filled with controversy. at his first stop in london, he questioned whether the city was ready for the olympics. in israel, he told jewish donors, their culture makes him better off economically than palestinians. reporters shouted questions about those comments after romney's tomb of the unknown soldier. that drew anger. >> we haven't had another chance to ask you a question. and declared a homicide after peterson's fourth wife, stacy, vanished in 2007. peterson is still under investigation for his fourth wife's disappearance. we now know the identity of a body, found deadly decomposed in a charles village apartment. 41-year-old christy huffenegle was found 10 days ago in the apartment on west 29th street. the discovery was made after police entered the road. white tells police the woman was in his apartment. police are awaiting tox colresults. the excisioner in charge of awarding licenses has been approved to run more than 3700 slot machines. this walking tour of the slots site last november helped

well, things are pitch black in parts of india, where a third power grid has failed. the grid failures have lost more than half the country, without electricity, causing a massive rolling blackout. this has affected more than 600 million people. police are searching for man who robbed a wheelchair. it happened in philadelphia. police say the victim suffered from muscular discovery. has no use of arms and legs. when the men came in the home, they knocked the victim from his chair, dragged him across

the floor. the robbers took a television. one suspect has been arrested. the others still on the run. a fire at a roller rink this morning. flames erupted in the town, 25 miles south of columbia. fire officials say four people were inside when it caught fire. everyone got out safely. tens of thousands of bees invade a texas home. adam said he heard a buzzing near his car port, so he went to check things out. that's when he stumbled on a 10- foot hive on his neighbor's home. there are those coming to cover up the swarm. >> the bees were carted off to a local farmer. >> so neighbor, would you mind coming over here? >> whoa. they got a professional.

if you accident storms seem more powerful, a new study backs up that feeling. storms packing a heavy punch are becoming more common. >> a year and a half ago, it was blizzards. two weeks ago, heavy downpours. >> reporter: the midatlantic has experienced a 55% increase in the frequency of these kinds of events. between 1948 and 2011. >> that's the findings of this study by environment maryland, which reviewed precipitation data from 4,000 reporting stations, over 65 years. >> something is happening in our atmosphere. now, there are cyclical changes in our atmosphere. however, something is happening just outside of that.

some showers are in the region tonight. a live look outside right now. a decent end to the mont of july. at least we are getting a break from the extreme heat. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating the forecast. we're start outside with bernadette. >> well, we do still have a couple of showers and showers showers and torm l -- thunderstorms around the state. that's going to be the case tonight into tomorrow. tomorrow morning, there could be a shower or thunderstorm around. and as we head through the day, temperatures the upper agents. pretty close to average, with a shower or thunderstorm really possible at any point during the day. then tomorrow evening, still that chance. over the next couple of days, we start to warm it up. here's bob with that. going to be hot and humid by little end of the week. can temperatures in the low 90s and kind of sticky. thunderstorm chances tomorrow and probably thursday. not as much chance friday, saturday, and sunday. back in the low 90s. and will feel rather humid. with temperatures in the mid mid- to upper 90s. so some heat as we head into

mark is dried out a bit now. he's here with the wjz the fan sports report. >> yeah, he's live from ravens training complex in owings mills, with the sun now out around him, mark. >> now, no more rain out here. we have been listing the number of early training camp injuries the ravens had had to deal with. starters haloti ngata, brian mckinney haven't even made it out onto the field yet. and tight end dennis pita does have a broken bone in his hand hand. he will miss training camp. but the biggest was terrell suggs' torn achilles tendon. we know he will miss at least half of the upcoming season. that opens the door for fourth year linebacker, paul krueger to step in and take a full-time role. he told me today, he's happy to be able to concentrate on one position. and he'll try to make the most

of it in fred zapton. but he's filling in for one of the most dominant in the nfl. suggs is the reigning defensive player of the year. >> talking about the best defensive player in the league. it's pretty much impossible to replace a guy like that. we just need to get him healthy and get him back. but for me, it's about -- it's about just me being me. and being the best player that i can be. and filling that role. and so i'm pretty excited about it. >> the ravens' first preseason game in atlanta. one week from thursday. first regular season game, september 10th. when the cincinnati bengals come to town. and their head coach, marvin louis, has secured his future through 2014. agreeing to a contract extension today. lewis, the former ravens assistant coach has been head coach for 10 years. only new england's bill belichick has been with him longer than marvin lewis.

baseball day. the deadline for teams trying to make trade. the nonwaiver deadline pass came without the orioles making the deal. they had intense talks with the phillies. but again, no deal was done. four weeks ago, they got slugger jim thome from the phillies. but today, tomey goes on the disabled list, a strained neck that caused him to sit out the last three games. now he's out for at least two weeks, to get that injury treated. robert andino comes out to take the spot. and o's try to beat the yankees today in new york. chris tillman looking for his third straight win. he's never done that in his career. o's will face yankees pitcher evan nota. first pitch in about 15 minutes. see the game on masn. but you won't see baltimore native mark teixeira in the lineup. he's out for a few days with inflammation in his left wrist.
