of baltimore has been right there with him. supporters gathered at a bar downtown to watch the swimming star race. they also gathered in mount washington to cheer on michael phelps who made history becoming the most decorated swimmer ever. >> i think it's great for america, for the u.s. i think it's great for baltimore and great for the sport of swimming. >> reporter: michael phelps has an impressive medal count. in 2004 in greece he won six gold and two bronze. at the games in beijing he won eight gold medals. so far in london he won three gold medals. baltimore fans know his story. in real life that his success at the olympics comes from years of hard work and training that he put here at the pool at

involved. >> reporter: this surveillance video released to wjz show it is man that police say is responsible for the abduction of ripkin. >> we're asking people outside the area to take a look at this video. >> reporter: the video show it is suspect casually walking into the store on the night that he kidnapped ripkin. he makes a purchase and walks out. police have released a sketch of the suspect. it was a week ago that ripkin, cal ripkin jr.'s mother was taken from her house. her car was spotted around 8:15 that night. a missing person alert went out at 5:30 in the morning and she was found at 6:00 in the morning. ripkin was tied up and thrown in the back of her car. the suspect took her on a terrifying ride for 24 hours.

the mayor of aberden calling the situation troubling. >> i have never seen anything like that. i think it's going to be a matter of time. >> reporter: the ripkin family has yet to comment publicly about the investigation. however they did release the statement saying they were grateful for vi's safe return. >> a $2,000 reward has been offered for tips leading to an arrest. a man is shot and killed by police after a struggle with a police officer. meghan mccorkell reports. >> reporter: it's released that the man had a knife, now it's been investigated if he tried

vegas. a monsoon type rain leads to widespread flooding. clogged storm drains helped contribute to the problem. some parts of las vegas saw nearly 2-inches of rain. a large power grid failed today compounding a problem that has millions of the people in the dark. thousands of people are stranded because the trains can't run. government officials say they are confident power will be restored tomorrow. a bird strike causes significant damage in an international flight from dallas to denver. the usda is trying to determine the size of the flock.

swimmer. >> we immediately started grabbing towels to compress the bleeding. >> a lot of bleeding? >> yeah, there was blood all over his legs. >> reporter: others called 911. >> reporter: what's the problem. >> a shark attack. she's bleeding, he's wounded. >> okay is he on the beach now? >> he's on the beach out of the water. >> reporter: witnesses say they have no doubt they saw a shark but they're not sure what kind it was. since the attack, most here have stayed on the sand but some took their chances on the water. >> it's nerve wracking for sure. >> but you weren't going to let it stop you? >> no, we'll always going in water. >> reporter: on top of this attack there's been an unusually large number of shark sightings along the coast of cape cod this year. adam may. >> reporter: according to the university of florida which tracks shark bites there has never been one in maryland. missing mascot in louisiana, tech 20 the mascot for louisiana tech was snatched

from a fenced area in the clinic where his owner worked. the british bulldog was let out for a several minutes. his owner says he wouldn't run away. the school is offering $10,000 for the dog's return. the drought in the midwest is turning into a good thing for noodlers. noodlers only use their hands to catch fish. hand fishing isn't as easy as it may look. it's messy and only allowed in a few states. so avoid putting your hand into the water and catch dinner. >> they have a whole show around that. >> you would be good at that. >> tastes like chicken. no taste like cat fish.

no wind at all and the dewpoints are 70. there are some showers west of us. let's take a quick look at radar. you can see some activity that's looking over western sections of our region. we'll probably see some of this in the baltimore a little heavier stuff south of us. so there may be some thunder even some lightning after midnight even 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. 76 now. no wind, the barometer is holding steady. locally out to the west they've had rain much of the afternoon and evening. 69, 64, 77dc. locally mid-70s, we had some showers in a few spots. the 80 in annapolis. 86, 70, today the average is 87. the record is 102 and 54. 1997. we've got some very light wind most areas. it's beginning to turn to the south tomorrow. i think we will see a bit of a

south wind and slight chance in the afternoon but shower or thunderstorms because of a front to the west. kind of a weak thing. but there's just enough of a cool air loft that may kick up some showers and thunderstorms. stays rather humid now by thursday and friday i think we might dry out but warm up into the mid-90s with less cloud cover. we will get up to 91, 92, maybe 93 degrees by thursday, friday and into the weekend. a lot of activity to the south. to the west of us there's a weak frontal system with shower activity. a whole bunch did develop and that is now beginning to cross into virginia. quite a bit of activity. it has weakened since we lost the sun. but we may still see some showers tonight. behind that there's some clearing skies, by thursday, friday we'll see a lot of sunshine. south winds five to 10 knots. the bay temps still nice and
