>> what went wrong. >> i'm jessica kartalija. >> i'm don scott. >> here's what people are talking about today. the faa is investigating a near collision involving three employees flying over washington dc. tear a has the latest details from reagan national airport. >> federal officials say three u.s. airways regional jets came within seconds of crashing in the skies over the nation's capital. one plane was approaching reagan national airport for a landing when air traffic control mistakeingly sent it into the path of other planes taking off. air traffic controllers changed the flow of traffic because of the wind shift. no one told the inbound pilot. two of the planes came within 12 seconds of a midair collision before the control tower ordered one of the pilots to swerve away. >> what happened?

>> standby >> the three planes involved were carrying a total of 192 passengers and crew. they all reached their destination safely. former chairman mark rose said a communication failure almost caused a tragedy. >> what was the break down in procedure? we have to understand where it was so we can make sure it doesn't happen again. >> they are working to find out what went wrong. >> when the incoming jet was diverted at the last second the pilot told the control tower he was almost out of fuel and had to land quickly. the most decorated olympian of all time is back if the pool in just a few hours trying to add another medal to his total. ron matsz is -- matz is in the news room with more. >> reporter: phelps will go head to head this afternoon with ryan lochte. phelps is trying to clench his third consecutive

charged for use of a telephone. federal charges may be filed. another water main break in baltimore city. a 16 inch main broke on kirk avenue in northeast baltimore just before 11:00 last night. water got into some basements. their concerned about the pipe because this is the second break in just 3 years. >> it's an old water main here. i don't have the exact age on it right now. we're going to have engineering look at it for total replacement and see where it is on our priorities. because of the additional break today, it's something that we're concerned about. >> a little over 2 weeks ago a 20 inch main break on light street downtown. repairs are expected to last another 3 weeks. a little more than a week from today baltimore city recreation centers will shut their door for good.

the mayor wants to create a smaller system of higher quality centers pledging to spend $19 million to biment three new ones and renovate another. some say closing the centers is bad idea. today marked one year since the disace -- disappearance of robin gardener in aruba. guard more's body -- gardener's body has never been found. girodano spent months in jail but was released. friends and family held a vigil. the state of maryland continues to operate under its long standing gun permit pom -- policy. yesterday a federal appeals court overruled a judge's finding allowing time for appeals to heard. it's a hot and more humid day this noon. let's take a live look outside. it's sunny

you see 88 range closer to 90. on the edge of the water temperatures are cooler, 84 kent island and annapolis. winds coming in from the east and a bit of a flow from the south. again, this wind is going to shift to the south and southwest over the next day or so curtesy of high pressure that's building in from our northwest. that high pressure starting the sink now that the low pressure system that's been offshore kind of locking things up is lifting away and up to the northeast. it's clearing out the way for that high to start sinking down into our region. it's going to allow for hot and humid air to move into the region. that's whether we have to look forward to -- that's what we have to look forward to for this beak -- this weekend. maybe a slight chance for widely showers mostly east into the weekend. nothing that's going to wash out plans. tropical depression number 5, which could turn into ernesto is
