hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> breaking news, michael phelps sets another olympic record. jessica kartalija is live with more on phelps, as he faces off with teammate and rival, ryan loctdy for the first time. >> michael phelps won his 16th in the 200 individual medley. the race also goes into the history books, because phelps is taking gold in the same individual event for a third consecutive time. phelps took the lead right from the start and never gave it up. michael phelps earns the gold. ryan lochte takes the second. it's phelps' fourth medal in these games and his first individual gold. >> it's going to be hard to catch his record. phelps says he and ryan lochte

love racing against each other. he said neither one likes to lose. and he says he believes they bring out the best in each other. search continues for a man who abducted cal ripken's mother at gunpoint. vi rip -- ripken was kidnapped a week ago monday. she was bound and driven around in her own car. she was found safely the next day. cal ripken jr. will address the incident publicly for the first time tomorrow. football star arrested. a former raven, said to be honored by the team next month, lands himself in jail. jamal lewis is now in trouble for failing to pay child support. >> 32-year-old jamal lewis says this is all a misunderstanding. but he now faces a misdemeanor charge of child abandonment. >> former raven jamal lewis, released from jail. this is his mug shot from clayton county, georgia, where authorities had cited on a website that he had not seen his son in more than a year. allegations that lewis had not

paid child support comes just months after he filed for bankruptcy, listing $14.5 million in asses of sets, including a fur coat, trucking business and amusement park. and that championship ring he won here in baltimore. he is reportedly $10.6 million in debt, even owing money to m&t bank, the name of the stadium where he made his name in the nfl. he spent four months in federal prison back in 2005 when he was indicted on drug charges, related to a cocaine deal and later entered a plea, escaping a possible 10-year sentence. >> i made a mistake four years ago, when i was 20 years old, that i'm paying heavily for, which i had to suffer the consequences, which i'm willing to do. >> so far, no official word from the ravens camp. jamal lewis is scheduled to be inducted into the ravens ring of honor. coming up new at 5:00. hear what jamal lewis has to say about this arrest. scary moments inside an anne arundel county movie

theater. 25-year-old kyle tanner is charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault. police say tanner started shouting and cursing during a showing of madagascar 3 at the bow tie theaters in annapolis. moviegoers say he left the theater and came back in. this time, pointing at people as though he had a gun. tanner ran away and was arrested near old solomon's island road. hear from someone who was in that theater, coming up all new at 5:00. seconds from disaster, three planes narrowly avoid a midair crash at reagan national airport. tara mergener reports for wjz, the faa is investigating what happened in the control tower. >> reporter: faa investigators are trying to figure out why three u.s. airways jets had a close call in the sky at reagan international. >> at no point were these planes on a head-to-head collision course. >> reporter: federal officials

say just after 2:00 tuesday afternoon, one plane was approaching reagan national airport for a landing. when air traffic control mistakenly-- mistakenly sent it into the path of two other planes taking off. >> we will get to the bottom of this. and we will take all appropriate action to prevent similar miscommunication. >> reporter: investigators say two of the planes came within 12 seconds of each other before the control tower ordered the incoming plane to swerve away. >> ryan had a 180. >> they were clear at the river back there. what happened? >> stand by. >> in this instance, a very competent, professional controller did her job. >> reporter: a storm approaching washington on tuesday caused the wind to shift. so air traffic control did a routine switch of the flight pattern. it's not clear why everyone didn't get the message. >> faa officials say the breakdown most likely happened between managers at a regional control center and the reagan

tower during the flight pattern change. >> reporter: the three planes were carrying a total of 192 passengers and crewmembers. they all made it to their destination safely. at washington's reagan national airport, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> officials are also trying to understand why they learned about this incident from a reporter, rather than the controllers who were involved. >> maryland -- marylanders appear to be changing their mind on the state's same-sex marriage law. gigi barnett is in the newsroom with the latest on the marriage equality ballot. >> a new survey shows support may be growing for the governor's same-sex marriage law. the poll done by the hart research reveals that 54% of likely voters will support the ballot measure this fall. 40% surveyed say they will not. a poll done earlier this year shows that 49% were for same- sex marriage in the state. and 41%, rather, were against it. now, if approved, same-sex

couples could begin tying the knot in january. they have collected enough signatures to put the issue to ballot this november. back to you. >> thank you, gigi. 500 people were surveyed for the poll. and the results of margin of error, 4 1/2%. the sun is shining on a pretty sticky august afternoon. outside, it is hot -- hot. just a short time ago, severe storms moved through the area. bob turk has the updated numbers. >> we have a humid afternoon and thundershowers, just south of the city. take a look. literally over northern a.a. county. this little batch moved through the annapolis area. moved up closer to bwi marshall and glen burnie. just north of crofton, heading up towards severna park. you see that activity -- activity there. moving generally off to the east and northeast at 16 miles per hour. some folks there, particularly anne arundel county. and maybe this will get into the southern portion of the city in southern baltimore county.

we have a line in the distance. partly sunny. the complete first warning weather forecast coming up. in texas, a convenience store clerk gets the shock of his life when a car plaus through his store. stunning surveillance video shows denise wilson, crashing her car into the store and hitting the man behind the counter. wilson was arrested for intoxication and assault. amazingly, the store clerk only suffered minor injuries and is already back at work. a 7-eleven customer goes after a clerk in florida. >> she just gave me the finger. i have it on video. >> the female clerk asked the

customer if her son wanted a ride on her broom. when she said no, the video captures her on video, using an expletive. video also shows her chasing the man in the car after he left the store. the clerk has since been fired. the culture clash continues over chick-fil-a's president's comments about gay marriage. thousands turned out in support of the head of the fast food chain. manuel bohecas reports on the growing controversy. >> reporter: from south carolina to texas and ohio. chick-fil-a supporters turned out in force yesterday to stand up for the fast food chain. but it wasn't just about the chicken. >> marriage is between one man and one woman. >> reporter: many showed up to back dan cathy. chick-fil-a's president and c.o.o. he ignighted a firestorm when he spoke out against gay

marriage. the mayors of boston and chicago also took a stand. >> it's not what i believe. and more importantly, not what the people of chicago believe. >> reporter: but on facebook, more than 6,000 people answered former arkansas governor mike huckabee's call for appreciation day. >> i just want to take a stand on god's word and come have a meal. >> reporter: huckabee put in his order. so did other conservatives, include congresswoman michele bachmann and lindsey graham. sarah palin even went last week, then again wednesday. but dominic alvarado, who is gay, feels the tide may turn against the chain. >> you think this will hurt the chain in the long run? >> i think so. more people today are more accepting of gay rights and just rights for everybody. >> reporter: supporters of same- sex marriage plan to counter. they say they will hold a national kiss-in campaign at chick-fil-a restaurants on friday. for cbs, i'm manuel in dallas.

>> reporter: more than 11,000 people have already signed up to attend national same-sex kiss-in day on facebook. not a great day on wall street. concerns about the job numbers dragged the markets down. the dow was down 92. s&p and the nasdaq are also both down. let's go to new york where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> reporter: stocks sold off after the european central bank failed to announce new plans to help the region's financial crisis. investors had been hoping for some concrete action since last week, when the head of the ecb promised to do, quote, whatever it takes to keep the euro intact. a big loss in europe dragged down general motors' second quarter profit by more than 40%. gm was still better than wall street expected. but the company won't predict when it will make money again in europe. the number of americans filing for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week. but before the average was

down, suggesting the job market is slowly improving. but analysts say it's probably not improving enough to lower the unemployment rate, which will be released tomorrow. hot weather has people headed for air conditioned stores last month, where they bought up clearance items. discount stores are reporting the strongest sales, including target, tj maxx and the gap. the better-than-expected sales are an encouraging sign as the crucial shopping season begins. that's your money watch. for more, go to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. if you want steamed crabs, you'll want to be in annapolis tomorrow. ron matz has a preview of the world's largest crab feast. >> reporter: navy marine corps memorial stadium is the setting. steamed crabs are the main attraction. the runway club of annapolis is ready for the world's largest crab feast, an annapolis tradition now in its 67th year. >> i tell you, watching the

that's a live look outside. ominous. >> i can verify that right now. take a look at radar. we have one cell over southwest baltimore. northwest aa county. approaching the elkridge area. just west of the airport

actually. and another over severna park. that's moving off to the northeast. this is heading right to the southwest of baltimore. so if you were in that region, over the next 10 to 15 minutes. look for some heavy downpours, lightning. and really a brief, gusty wind at 25 to 30 miles an hour. it's moving right for the southwest portion of the city. and that will cool things out for you folks. otherwise, at the airport, they did drop a little bit from 87 to 84. now, the dew point is pretty high at 70. south/southwest winds at 17 there. the barometer, right now holding steady. 29.89 inches. around the area, where we've had clouds and rain. temperatures in the low 80s. otherwise, really warmed up. 92 in cumberland. 81 in ocean city. once again, the dew points pretty high at 70. tomorrow, about the same kind of moisture in the air. a little warmer than today, which means the low to mid-90s we're expecting. we'll probably feel like maybe upper 90s tomorrow afternoon. and there can be another chance of a thunderstorm.

87 in annapolis. 91 in rock hall. right now, pretty good breeze coming out of the southwest. most areas have been a southeast breeze, which kept it from getting too hot today. so far, i've only seen a high of quench degrees. now, to the -- 87 degrees. now, to the west, few showers and thunderstorm activity. down here is extremely hot. oklahoma city has had three days of 109, 110, 112 degrees. unbelievably hot in central oklahoma. some of that heat is moving to the ohio valley. talking low to mid-90s. that will be with us for about the next two days, friday and saturday. then we start to cool off. as some of the clouds move in, we see scattered shower and thunderstorm activity. widely scattered tomorrow. a better chance, i think on saturday. and i think probably all next week every day next week, a chance of a shower. speaking of south of us, let's go quickly after this to the tropics. that's going to dominate the system. a little milder by early next

week. once again, still have that tropical depression. hasn't done much today. it's heading pretty much off to the west, around 20 miles an hour. there is shear, in other words, winds coming this direction, which helps to keep the storm from growing. it's not expecting to become too much stronger. it may become a cat 1 storm west of jamaica. and that will be sometime monday, all on early tuesday. keep it way south in the caribbean. may get into the gulf of mexico by the middle or end of next week. we'll be watching it. south winds, 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, around 82 degrees. tonight, scattered shower and thundershower. a few spots south of us, of course. 72. and then tomorrow, warm, humid. humid and hot. 93. that will be 6 degrees above average. and there can be a thunderstorm again some places in the afternoon. pretty typical of the next five days. >> that time of year. thank you, bob. don't miss tonight's seeks lineup at 10:00. it's another episode of person

native robin gardner disappeared from aruba. >> wjz has learned aruban authorities are coming to the united states soon to meet with the fbi as her family vows to find out what happened to her. >> reporter: it was last august that robin gardner traveled to aruba with maryland businessman gary giordano. he said she disappeared after snorkeling off the coast. two days after she vanished, giordano tried to collect millons on a policy he took out on her. all the while, robyn's family in frederick hadn't given up on finding her. and for the first time, robyn's mother and sister are speaking publicly about robyn's disappearance. >> my mother is still in contact with the fbi and the aruinan -- aruban authorities. we're here to remember her and keep home a -- hope alive that maybe one day she'll come home. >> just to not forget robyn and

not give up hope finding her. i think there's still hope. >> reporter: since being released from prison in aruba, gary giordano has professed his innocence on national tv. and he's gotten arrested for indecent exposure in an annapolis parking garage, after police found him naked in a car with a woman from tennessee. and gary giordano will fight that charge of indecent exposure in court. >> giordano is also suing american express for failing to pay that $1.5 million death benefit. the indiana state fair stage collapse. last august, strong winds toppled the stage rigging just before country duo sugar land took the stage, killing seven and injuring dozens. victims today made claims against the $13.2 million settlement offer. it could be weeks before they learn their share of the money. needles found in airline

food on two different carriers are raising concern. as brian todd reports, investigators are trying to determine who is behind these incidents. >> reporter: two airlines, seven sandwiches. heightened anxiety. on monday, from victoria, british columbia from toronto. the airline says it is investigating. and working with its caterers to tighten security. this follows reports of needles found in six sandwiches, found in delta airlines flights from amsterdam to the u.s. two weeks ago. >> when i felt to see what it was, i pull today out. and here it was a needle, about 1-inch long with, it looked like a sewing needle. but it was sharp on both ends. it didn't have an eye on one end. >> reporter: the fbi is dutch authorities are investigating that case. dutch officials tell cnn, some of those sandwiches, including one seen in an abc news photo, have just arrived at amsterdam's airport, where

they're being forensicically -- forensically examined. they object this is pranks not foreign plots. >> i don't see why they would settle on needles that would just bring pain to the one biting into it but not be lethal in the long run. >> reporter: there is one connection. gape gourmet is a delta airlines caterer. and it admits that the needle was found there meals. >> reporter: they say the company is working with the airlines to enhance screening of its food. i asked rami about that process. >> with everything being loaded onto a plane like that, how do you screen all of those items for something that may be in here? >> well, not everything has to be screened. and not necessarily screening

is the best solution to present the forbidden items from getting on board. in the case of catering, obviously catering is being prepared in a specific location. and this is a place where the security procedures need to take place. >> reporter: ron says airline caterers have to start by vetting their employees better. >> the security concerns go beyond just sandwiches and other prepackaged food. one expert from the hospitality industry says about 40,000 items are loaded onto a jumbo jet for a long flight. when you count food, knives, forks, blankets and are the items. senate republican, end -- intended to block a bill. the bill would have set vol steer security standards for important privately-owned infrastructure. the white house said if it had passed, it would help protect us against digital attacks on vital u.s. assets, such as power grids. but republicans vote today down, saying the measure would lead to excessive regulations.

president obama and mitt romney are on the trail again today. in the campaign 2012 report, dick brennan explains, both candidate are making their-- candidates are making their pitch. >> reporter: mitt romney stepped on a stage in golden, colorado, ready to hammer president obama on the economy. the republican white house hopeful is working to win votes in this key swing state, where the unemployment rate is 8.2%. he brought along his own report card on promises the president made four years ago. >> all measures he laid out are measures that have gone in the wrong direction. >> reporter: romney is also rolling out a new ad, criticizing the president for his handling of the economy. >> he focused on obama care instead of jobs. barack obama, what a diss appointment. >> reporter: the commercial is on the air in florida, where president obama hit the campaign trail thursday. >> reporter: he told voters outside orlando that his plan for boosting the economy is better than his challenger's.

suvs. with 18,000 lexus hs250 models from 2010. toyota says the move is due to a suspension problem that could cause prashes. the -- crashes. the automaker says if the nuts on the rear suspension arm aren't tightened properly during the wheel alignment service, those wheels may become loose or separated. they may be cause to three minor car accidents in the united states. >> they are making a fix to the problem. it says dealerships will fix the problem for free. storms in the area now. take a live look outside. it is overcast and quite humid. bob is here now with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> that's rain out there. that's an amazing shot. it really is. from here. let's take a look at radar. we had the one cell approaching the city. in fact, it's over southwest portions of baltimore we speak. and another over portions of anne arundel county. we'll look at those two right

there. there it is, heading right for downtown baltimore. they're the ones heading over east of severna park there east of 97. let's take a closer look at this one. right over halethorpe. if you're in the city, heading to the southwest, look for the rain to be there very shortly. and looks like it may last, 20 to 30 minutes. some lightning and thunder with that particular cell. temperature-wise, depending where you live, you may have clouds or shower. we're at 84 at the airport. 77 in oakland. and 90 in easton. 96 the hot spot in easton. 98 in pax river, where it's very humid tomorrow. i think a lot of places are going to be in the mid- to

upper 90s. see that rain coming right down. beautiful shot, though. looks like a tornado. but it's not. it's just rain with brief, gusty winds. we'll come back and take a look at more of that activity in a couple of minutes. let's check on traffic with kristy breslin at traffic control. >> well, take your time out there. there. the roads are slick due to rain. slowing from shawan road to belfast. northbound 95, delays stretch there from 395 past the fort mchenry tunnel. as far as the beltway goes, stop and go on the north side inner loop, from charles street to harford road. the west side inner loop, traffic does show down as -- slow down as you make your way toward security boulevard. as far as accidents go, in harford county in forest hills, 543, at chestnut hill road, all lanes are blocked. also, washington boulevard at 100 for another crash. we have an overturned vehicle at harford road. at route 24. let's take a look at our drive times. 42 miles per hour average.

improves to safe levels. no injuries have been reported. it's been 6 months now since josh powell killed himself and his two children. now, a new report is claiming social workers may be at fault. gigi barnett is live with more on what the report is claiming. >> a panel found they did not consult with police before allowing josh powell home visits at his house with his children. during one of those supervised visits early this year, he locked the front door on a social worker, attacked his two boys and then blew up the house, killing himself and his children. powell was locked in a heated custody battle at the time of the murder-suicide and had been ordered to undergo a psychosexual education. -- evaluation. powell was a suspect in his wife susan powell's 2009 appearance, but was never officially charged by police. vic, back to you. >> the report concluded that social services should reassess visitation policies when there

is an active investigation or when someone is ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation. the owner of a jewelry store pulls out her own pistol and opens fire. but the suspects get away. serene branson reports, police are hoping that police video will help them to track him down. one by one, five men walked right through the front door, wearing masks. some in hoods. two were armed in handguns. >> they demanded all of the occupants on the store get down and ask for money. >> reporter: but after only a few seconds, the 65-year-old female store owner decided to take the matter into her own hands. >> and fearing for the safety of the customers and her employees, she armed herself with a handgun that she keeps inside of the business. fired two rounds. >> reporter: the suspects scamper, one falling as he hustles out. the owner's yorkie barks on the counter, as he chased them out, keeping her gun raised. >> it was already gone.

>> reporter: the owner of the neighboring health foods store said he heard the shots. the suspects heard their white suv. some ran on foot before he could even come out of his store. it happened thursday evening, just before closing at 6:00 p.m. at continental jewelry and pawn in garden grove. police say the suspects left empty-handed and the situation could have episoded much worse. >> she felt her life and the lives of the people inside that store were in jeopardy. and she took an action that maybe is not the best course of action. but she did take an action that she felt was appropriate to protect those people inside of that store. >> the store workers and customers inside were not injured. a wisconsin man dubbed the bra bandit is facing charges after police seize bras. investigators say he cut down and stole bras hanging on a bridge to raise awareness for breast cancer. when officers tracked him down, they found dozens of bras in his car. the man was arrested and charge

with disorderly conduct. he claimed he pulled the bras down because he doesn't think the display is the best way to bring awareness to breastcancer. a michigan couple weaks up to find an un -- wakes up to find an uninvited guest in their bed. they found the man sleeping. police say the man had been drinking and also left two young children unattended in his nearby home. it's no secret. texting while driving is dangerous. but one texas college student learns that lesson the hard way. kevin reese reports, he is now devoting his life to making other drivers aware of the dangers. he was a 21-year-old college student, headed home. headed home and texting. and one of the last things he typed was this. i need to quit texting because i could die in a car accident. and seconds later, chance bodie plunged off a bridge and into a ravine. >> i had to call the funeral

home. he'll never make it. >> his dad found his son with a broken neck, crushed skull, traumatic brain injuries. >> we lost him three times. >> reporter: and now, six months later. >> yes. i was text messaging, flew right off the road. >> >> i'm very lucky that i'm not gone forever. i still have things to do in this world. >> step and down. good job. >> reporter: he talked to us on his last day of rehab at tear tirr memorial hermann, where he learned to talk and walk again. because his message is as obvious as the scars on his reconstructed face. >> just need to understand. don't do it. don't do it. your life -- it's not worth losing your life. i went to my grandmother awe funeral not long ago. and i kept thinking, it kept jumping in my head, i'm surprised it's not me in that
