jr., is struggling to understand who would take his 74-year-old mom vi from the home she's lived on for decades in aberdeen. >> it's quite possible it could have been a random act. quite possible it could have been more than that. she is just plain tired of answering those questions, i think, and going over it. >> reporter: his comments come just days after a surveillance video. >> there's thought given to it. the materials used to bind her were bought there. so there's a lot of evidence that shows that there was somewhat of a plan. i don't know when she'll go back. but certainly right now issue she's not back in her house yet. >> reporter: ripken said she is not sure whether the abductor knew who his mom was. he said he didn't even know she was missing until some 14 hours into the ordeal. >> the woman was tied up in the back seat of a car, and they wanted to know f we knew where mom was. and we couldn't find mom.

>> it was the worst feeling you could imagine. >> reporter: this was the only time where ripken's emotions caught up to him during the news conference, which he called uncomfortable, but necessary, to catch the man who turned his family upside down. >> she's still a little shaky. and we're all a little shaky. >> reporter: and police said that surveillance video came from a wal-mart in glen burnie. they are still not saying if vi ripken's credit card was used to purchase anything there. reporting live at camden yards, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> billboards are now going up with a sketch of the suspect. a reward is also being offered. updating the breaking news from last hour a multivehicle pileup in baltimore county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene on north point boulevard. at least eight vehicles were involved in this crash. a number of people are injured. one of them critically. the cause of the crash is under investigation. we have more breaking news to tell you about right now.

was arrested tuesday in clayton, on misdemeanor child abandonment charges. the arrest warrant says he hasn't seen his son in more than a year and hasn't paid child support. >> a lot of it is untrue. >> in 2005, he pled guilty to trying to set up a cocaine deal. that was before he was in the nfl. he is reportedly more than $10 million in debt. >> i made a mistake four years ago, when i was 20 years old, that i'm paying heavily for. >> reporter: in one season, he rushed more than 2,000 yards as a raven. >> reporter: and there's been no comment from the ravens camp on whether or not they'll still induct lewis into the ring of honor, despite these allegations. >> reporter: lewis is expected to be inducted at a game next month. he is hoping his fans will continue to respect him as a man, an nfl star and a father. >> this is totally not me, or whatever. but it would be interesting. the truth will come out. >> reporter: and lewis is

expected to be inducted into the ring of honor come september 27th. vic, back to you. >> rochelle, thank you. lewis retired in 2009 from the nfl. he played six seasons with the ravens. indecent exposure charges in annapolis are dropped against gary giordano. the maryland man linked to the disappearance of robyn gardner. the prosecution announced this morning. giordano arrested in may, after police said they were found naked in a parked car in an annapolis garage. giordano has never been charged for the disappearance of robyn gardner. he said she was swept out to sea. gigi is following a story for us from the newsroom. >> reporter: well, mary. kelvin mannerige is sentenced to three years and five months about -- behind bars. they took kickbacks from this

auto repair shop. prosecutors say they steered accident victims in exchange for the cash. and the owners of the shop then shopped insurance companies. those owners will be sentenced next month. 14 officers have pleaded guilty to the extortion conspiracy in federal court. and one pled guilty in state court. another officer was found guilty at trial. all of the officers received between 8 and 42 months in prison. $19 million. that's the damage estimate from this summer's derecho storm that blasted through parts of the state. wjz is live. jessica kartalija explains, the federal government is stepping in to help out. >> reporter: well, vic, most of the money went to handle fallen debris. and of course, the government overtime. >> reporter: baltimore county 911. >> it was an explosion. and we can see fire coming up all around it. >> reporter: in june, a 60-mile- an-hour storm, called a derecho, swept through maryland. >> sounded like the whole house was coming down.

>> reporter: the storm forced trees through buildings and power lines. >> now that the disaster is over with. and the life safety issues are over with. now it's the economic impact that we are taking care of. >> reporter: a presidential disaster declaration has been granted, helping counties cover the areas hardest hit. >> reporter: there are individual county thresholds, based on certain damage amounts. and there are six areas within the state that have met those thresholds, if you will. and that had been awarded decoration by the president. -- declaration boy the with the. >> those include calvert, chart -- charles, kent, montgomery and baltimore city. where damage was more than $1.5 million. >> we worked very hard during the derecho to make sure we kept copious notes. >> the partnership is key here. it's not the federal government coming in and telling the state government what to do. >> reporter: are the counties here are eligible for funding. once they complete an

application process, that application will be reviewed. and perhaps federal money will be granted to those counties in most need. >> reporter: if additional counties are deemed eligible for support, they could receive a check within months. >> reporter: and maryland was also granted additional funds for any future developments, regarding the storm and any additional damages they may uncover. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> jessica, thank you. the damage in pennsylvania and virginia still being assessed. a fairly warm august evening. about where we should be this time of year. live look outside now. humid again. which means we could see pop-up showers. bob is in the first warning weather center, tracking live doppler radar for us. bob? >> live radar, showing nothing in the state of maryland. it's all quiet now. but there's a little activity south of washington. one little cell there. you can see it in northern virginia. southwest of the region, moving off to the northwest. but it will die out. these storms will quickly die out. looks like we'll have a repeat

probably tomorrow. and a better chance sunday of more of these afternoon thunderstorms. take a look at temperatures. airport now at 90, 91 in d.c. the dew points pretty high at 72. pretty moist atmosphere. when you take 90 degrees and combine with a dew point of 72. feels more like the upper 90s most places. or at least mid- to upper 90s. looks like the weekend pretty much the same kind of forecast. maybe cooling down a little bit for next week. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you. a hot july when it comes to the labor market. private companies added 163,000 jobs last month. that's the biggest hiring wave since february. but the overall job rate increased because more people who gave up on looking for a job are trying once again. mostly positive reports sent the markets soaring. here's the closing numbers. dow is up 217. s&p is up 26. and nasdaq up 58. forget about the traffic. gamble at home.

maryland lawmakers will consider internet gambling when they meet in a special session next week. political reporter pat warren has more on this latest development. >> reporter: maryland has got game. but surrounding states got it beat. >> on august 9th, we will be calling a special session to resolve this issue now. >> reporter: governor o'malley hasn't shown his hand yet. but has pretty much nailed down his intention to ask for table games at maryland slots casinos. and permission from voters to license a sixth casino. now, another controversy is brewing. internet gambling in maryland. >> what we've outlined is in essence, the question being put to voters in our state. and that is, do we expand table games? and also, will there be a sixth sight in prince george's county? the prospect of letting marylanders gamble in their own homes is making casino look like small potatoes. looking to offset the potential competition from the casino at

it is mostly sunny, 90 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a surprise sighting in northeast harford county. a black bear makes itself at home in a backyard. and the homeowner got it all on video. andrea fumiy has -- andrea fujii has the story. it's not every day you see a black bear in your backyard. in fact, lifelong resident donna fitz has never seen one. until last night. >> he just thought it was a bird and knocked it down and started tearing it up. >> reporter: for approximately an hour, the 2-year-old bear rummaged around their property. >> i wasn't scared. wasn't scared. >> how come? >> i don't know. it was on the outside and i was on the inside. that made a difference. >> reporter: some boy scouts were camping down the road, so neighbors drove up and warned

someone painted "tastes like hate" on a restaurant in torrance. wednesday, customers held a chick-fil-a appreciation day to show support of chick-fil-a. the company said it set a sales record wednesday, but have not released the numbers. i'm melissa rainy reporting. >> chick-fil-a released a statement friday, saying at chick-fil-a, we appreciate all of our customers and are glad to serve them at any time. our goal is simple to provide great food, genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with chick-fil-a. the man attacked by a great white shark off the coast of cape cod is talking about an ordeal tonight. >> doctors discharged 50-year- old christopher myers from a massachusetts hospital this morning. he was attacked monday by a great white shark, while he and his teenage son were swimming, about 400 yards offshore. he describes what happened just after the shark attacked him.

>> i kicked very hard with my free leg, with my right leg. and i was able to -- or the shark decided i wasn't tasted or something good happened. and he let me go. and i guess jj heard me scream. >> reporter: myers now has four puncture wounds on each lower leg. and had surgery to repair torn tendons, caused by the bite. mary, back to you. >> all right, gigi, thank you. myers said he would not have gone so far offshore, if he had heard about recent shark sightings or warning signs were posted on the beach. drought tightens its grip on crops across the country, crop loss is only the first stage. it's what is coming in the months ahead that will hit farmers and consumers the hardest. >> reporter: two weeks ago on the eastern shore, heat and drought had already finished off much of the corn crop. >> it's a big concern for us as farmers. but i'm also extremely concerned for our end user.

>> reporter: meet that end user. livestock from dairy cows to chicken, are fed corn. feed, already showing signs of shortage in maryland and across much of the south and midwest. >> really curious myself whether there's going to be enough feed out there to feed the livestock throughout the country. >> reporter: scott us -- you se. on farms, what can't afford to get fed usually gets sold. >> dairy farmers are already looking at cows that are not profitable and moving them because they can't afford to feed them. >> reporter: unless there's this. irrigation has saved enough of youse's crops to save his cows but not enough water to save all of it. >> you have one, two, three little kernels on there. >> scarcity leaves them looking for ways to get resources. >> reporter: in some loads, he

drought. although some areas north of baltimore have seen more than double their normal rainfall in the last 45 days. down there, they have primarily missed most of the rain. mary? >> all right, bob. thank you. federal prosecutors want more time to prepare against the traveling medical technician, accused of infecting patients with hepatitis c. david kiakowski is accused of injecting the drug into himself and using the contaminated sirrisms on patients. rye rite now, he faces charges -- right now, he faces charges in new hampshire, but he worked at several hospitals across the nation, including here in maryland. runners are ditching their sneakers. but doctors are seeing more and more injuries from bare foot running. >> reporter: this running club is pounding the pavement without sneakers. >> i go bare foot whenever i can. >> i felt freer. and actually, i was faster than running in my shoes. >> reporter: many people are getting into bare foot running, convinced it's better

for their body. joe malar said he had knee, hip, and back problems before going bare foot. >> i'm running much, much more now than i was before. and painlessly, and a little faster. >> reporter: many bare foot runners wear a special running shoe, which doesn't protect your foot but protect its from hitting the ground. >> reporter: doctors say the trend is causing injuries, especially for runners just getting started. >> reporter: bare foot runners use different muscles. doctors say their strike tends to be shorter. and they land on another part of their foot. and that could land some people in the doctor's office. >> stress fractures. because the metatarsals or the bones that lead to the toes are getting much strength. we see a lot of tendonitis issues. both in the ligaments and tendons and arch. >> reporter: chris has been running for two years. his advice, don't rush into. >> you certainly have to ease into distance and pace and frequency while your body

all right. mark is live with the training complex. with the wjz the fan sports report. >> hi, mark. >> how are you doing? a couple of big guys made their training camp debut. haloti ngata and bryant mckinnie. combined, 700 pounds. that's pretty big. both expected to make an impact for the ravens in 2012. now, mckinney is an important part of the ravens' offensive line. heaven years in the -- 11 years in the nfl. starting left tackle back for his second season. he was a mystery for last week. then showed up for a back injury. mckinney passed his conditioning test this morning and was on the field with the team this afternoon. >> it means a lot.

you know, it's another offensive lineman. of course, bryant is a guy who has played a lot of football. and for his career, but also for us last year. and he's competing right in there with the rest of the guys. and he's going to be a big part of us and has been. >> reporter: lahoty -- haloti ngata is the first starting defense tackle. he missed time with a strained hamstring. the ravens hold a public workout at the stadium tomorrow. no admission. gates open at 3:30 in the afternoon. while the ravens take over downtown, the orioles are on the road, opening an important road series, at tampa bay tonight. nick markakis will be the orioles' leadoff hitter at a spot in the lineup. he has taken over since he came off the disabled list. now, markakis was never a leadoff in his career until three weeks ago. and he has been the birds' most consistent hitter during his return. got a batting average of 3.68 in that time. driven in 15 runs in that league.
