joining us. i'm adam may. we should give you a spoiler alert that michael phelps is in the pool right now but it was an emotional night for bought's star olympian, for the last time, michael phelps ends with a final gold medal. easily wins the relay in london one day after winning the 100- meter butterfly. >> i tried to fight it but then i just decided to let it go. whatever happened happened and just take in the last couple of memory and moments of my swimming career. >> people were cheering as phelps awarded the special silver trophy for his achievements. >> he went out with a bang. >> he's a great swimmer. can't take that away from him.

an 80-year-old woman was found in the home. her identity was not released just yet. the cause of the fire is under investigation tonight. chicken place caught on fire. quickly moved to two alarms. investigators are trying to determine what caused the blaze. the damage was extensive. no one was hurt. oklahoma city fires are believed to be set on purpose. one of many wildfires spreading across oklahoma. >> reporter: people came back to luther, oklahoma, to find their homes reduced to ash. saw some of the homes destroyed by the massive wildfire. she called it heartbreaking. many of the people here lost

everything. >> most everything else was just ash and dust. i come back early thinking that i pick something up and be able to find some things underneath that were protected but you can't pick anything up because it's falling apart. >> reporter: firefighters got the upper hand on the fire that charred four square miles. the oklahoma county sheriff is investigating reports someone tossed out newspapers that had been set on fire. in creek county, firefighters forced residents from their home. >> i never seen anything like this before, i'm 84. i've lived in this community all my life. >> reporter: bone dry temperatures at 113 degrees. conditions are treacherous for the firefighters. >> the wind comes up and the cedar trees look like dynamite coming off. it's scary out there. >> reporter: it will take days to put out the blazes.

drew, wjz eyewitness news. >> the state is on track to be a record number of wildfires. a storm rolls through chicago evacuating a music festival, lollapalooza. festival goers underground. the national weather service issued flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings for the area. >> we were here last year and it rained and i know when it started, everyone ran so i guess they're just taking precautions. >> better be safe. the festival reopened later on in the night after all the bad weather passed through the area. we have breaking news, just in wjz tonight. the man charged with shooting congresswoman gabby giffords is expected to plead guilty. jared lautner is now competent to understand the charges against him in the assault that killed six people and injured 13 at that gathering in tucson.

lautner is expected to plead guilty on tuesday and under the terms of the deal, he would serve a life sentence. other terms remain unclear tonight. we'll keep you posted here on wjz this weekend. baltimore city police are looking for a gunman right now after a deadly shooting. a 22-year-old man was found bleeding from gunshot wounds in the 3000 block oviger son of garrison avenue. gambling at friday, august 10th days after the members are said to come back from annapolis. they let members know in an e- mail they'll address the recent controversial decision with pit bulls and liability loss. get ready to eat up. not ending tomorrow as originally planned. the deals continue through august 12th.

first warning weather forecast coming up, but first, two powerful storms slam china flooding the country. the remnants of two typhoons caused rivers to swell and flooded streets and hundreds of thousands had to be evacuated. authorities are warning local governments to prepare for more floods and mud slides. in other news, new zealand, a building implodes in just a matter of seconds. imagine how cool it was for a 6- year-old boy that got the detonate the explosives, he was nominated by the cancer foundation. eight companies to demolish the building. it was in the earthquake. other buildings will be demolished the same way. back here in the u.s., a man slams into the mall of america who misjudged the size

of his u-haul truck and it fell on the vehicle. it killed him on impact and two other people were there that were later rescued. controversy in portland racks up a big bill for saving a boy's life after john clark rescued a 12-year-old from the water, he told emergency crews he had a headache and gave him to the hospital. he got a bill for $2600. >> i saw that, you know, the physician's bill is like $300 and he gave me a cup of water and a blanket and the ambulance driver made $1800. i mean, i just got in and got my blood pressure taken and gave me some fresh water. >> the family was worried after seeing the bill because they don't insurance. since the story be hit, people across the country have been giving the donations. anything that exceeds the bill is going into the life guard's college fund. unbelievable. thousands of people headed to prison today.

they were visitors before it was torn down. gigi barnett with what people learned about its history and horrors. >> reporter: behind the bars of this state correctional facility, some prisoners served time. they're gone now, but opened the hall for tours. >> we knew a lot of people that worked here and housed here also. >> reporter: built in 1878, it's one of the state's oldest correctional facilities but too small for a modern jail and increasingly violent jail mates. it became a death trap when he was ambushed by two inmates who stabbed him to death. it forced to shut down the house of corrections for good. >> it was an opening to the yard. >> reporter: lawrence worked at the prison from 1965 and 1986. he came back this weekend for

sometimes in parts of the state at 105, so it was definitely a warm day. we're at 82 degrees at b.w.i. marshall. dew point in the 70s, so it's still pretty moist out there. it's pretty muggy and humid. southeasterly wind with the southeasterly flow helping to bring in more moisture off the bay and the ocean depending how far out to the east you are. the temperatures around the state are 70 in oakland, 79 in ocean city. 85 in d.c. we have 82 out in hagerstown. 79 in bel air and everyone else reporting 80s. 85 in annapolis and kent island. the southerly component, bringing in the high air in control of the forecast for the last few days. the high started around the great lakes and has been continuing to slip off the coast of the mid-atlantic. the high that allows for that warm air to move on in, the high moves out and that low

comes in from the south and southeast. that's what we're dealing with now. the storm system in chicago, the lollapalooza concert that kind of delayed as a result, this is the same front that moves our direction starting now that's starting to make the push, but by tomorrow afternoon, it will be here. the same type of storm could be headed our way by tomorrow afternoon, but in the meantime, the hot and humid temperatures stay in place with less humid conditions behind it. this front will be the transition. downpours that could be strong with a tornado threat, that will be posted but then a nice start to the week. this is ernesto. expected to strengthen to a category 1 hurricane by the middle of next week. we're going to keep a close eye on that and then a tropical storm out there, that one is not really a concern for us
