>> because of the heroic actions of our officers, they stopped this from being worst than it could be. >> reporter: the shooter ambushed a 20 year veteran of the police department before someone else stepped in. >> our officer engaged that individual and that individual is deceased. >> reporter: witnesses here at the sikh temple said the shooting started around 10:30 as worshipers gathered for morning service. >> there was one guy outside that went inside. i was hiding >> reporter: people already inside looked for places to stay safe. >> my mom called my cousin. she said she and 15 others locked themselves in the pantry. >> reporter: police have not identified the suspect, but law enforcement suspects say he is 40-years old and used a nine millimeter simi automatic pistol. witnesses say the temple's president was wounded as he tried to confront the suspect.

wounded. >> >> reporter: the sikh as here say they are often mistaken for muslims because of their appearance. >> ever since 9/11, communities feel this type of things could happen anywhere any time. >> reporter: the civil rights group based out of washington, sikh coalition. since 9/11, alarming increase in several harassments, even violence against them across the country. >> there are perceptions out there because of the articles of faith because of a tower ban and a beard that people misunderstand. we are not al-qaida. >> reporter: these sikh's have opened their temple doors to give others into what they say is their misunderstood faith. >> our religion teaches us to be faithful and love other

communities. >> reporter: they are not muslim. the president of maryland's muslim council came to stand in solidarity. >> we cannot let the evil people or people that are mentally insane or whatever you call them to take away the initiative and that's we why we are here to show the sikh community we share your sorrow. >> members of the sikh community said they will be working to find out what kind of assistance they can offer to the victims in wisconsin. >> president obama said he is deeply saddened by the shooting. his administration will offer any support needed. >> >> let's switch gears to talk about severe weather. pretty bad storms whipped across maryland and in their wake, some severe damage. take a look at this picture sent in from a "wjz" viewer. a huge tree crashed 23450 this home in glenn burnie. no one was hurt.

pretty substantial damage to the side of the home. check this out, another tree fell down in the fast-moving storms the storms are not done, yet. we have them hitting maryland right now. let's get to bernadette woods. she is live with first warning doppler radar, a little thunder out there, person? >> there is, and there was a spike in power out ans. first warning doppler radar, scattered showers and thunderstorms out there, right now, we don't have any watches or warnings tit, at this time, we'll continue to see rounds. we'll take you a quick tour and show you, in the city, it is dry. but we will see some moving our way. this part of 95, a lot of thunderstorms, really heavy rain in these storms and gusty winds 30-40-miles per hour and more where that came from. this batch is about to cross over into maryland. it will continue to move eastward. still have showers and thunderstorms out there. more coming later on this week.

we'll have that forecast -- >> lawns are getting green. >> >> "wjz" is always on for instant updates. let's check in with oklahoma where families are picking up the pieces after a raging wildfire destroyed their homes. this is what is left 30-miles northeast of oklahoma city. governor toured the charred remains. officials estimate the fire damaged 56 homes and other buildings in the area. police believe the blaze was intentionally set. they were looking for a ban who was spotted throwing burning newspapers out of a tuck in that area. >> >> new surveillance pictures just released to "wjz" of the man police want to question. he is the man seen in the left corner there in an orange t shirt. the fire started in the men's bathroom early friday. over the damage when it quickly

grew to a two-alarm fire and burned-out most of the restaurant. anyone with information is asked to call the maryland hotline. 1-hundred-492-7579. >> >> a bank not open for business any time soon. a fire broke out just before 7:00 tonight. the building sustained severe damage. we are told it will be closed for several days. >> >> two men under arrest tonight, accused of firing into a crowd of people near the university of maryland. police say a fight broke out in college park early saturday morning, that's when police say melvin watson and david brandon shot into the crowd from an s.u.v. police pulled the men over and arrested both of them. no one was hurt in that shooting. >> >> a pretty tough couple of months for a charitable man, but tonight, a report that batman is getting a new toy and he hopes the kids will love it.

we have seen -- when the storms went through, it dropped us to 75 degrees. with that out of here, we have had other line we are dealing with slowly, but surely, it will moving way. sunshine will return and drier air temporarily before the whole set back off to the north starting tuesday night into wednesday. now, in the tropics. tropical storm 52-miles an hour, moving off to the west. looking like this has a chance to turn into a hurricane before making landfall. in the yucatan or belize. we'll keep you updated. this is florence, that is moving off to the west, but it is already moving 40-mile per hour winds. this one is not expected to do a lot north of the islands right here. small craft advisory has been
